THIS WEEKEND The Dartmouth men’s hockey team heads to the New York Capital Region this weekend for a pair of ECAC Hockey games against No. 11 Union and Rensselaer Friday and Saturday nights. LAST TIME OUT The Big Green are coming off a 1-1 weekend in which they split with conference foes Princeton and No. 15 Quinnipiac. Friday night saw a 5-0 blanking of the Tigers, while the Bobcats managed to hold off a late comeback bid by the home team the following night in earning a 4-2 victory.

WHERE WE STAND… NOW! -.Heading into the weekend in Albany, Dartmouth is in search of crucial league points. Eight-of-22 ECAC Hockey games have been played thus far and Dartmouth has six points (2-4-2), good for eighth in the conference standings. -.Yale and Brown have also played just eight games, while Cornell and Colgate have taken to the ice for just seven league games. Quinnipiac (13) and Princeton (12) have already skated in more than half of their scheduled conference contests this year. - .This upcoming weekend sees Dartmouth play the top team in the standings one night (Union/17 points) and the last-place team (Rensselaer/2) the following.

SCOUTING UNION -.The Dutchmen lead ECAC Hockey with 17 points and an 8-1-1 mark in league play. -.The team is 11th in both national polls this week as it boasts a 14-5-2 overall record, despite losses to North Dakota and Boston University in its last two outings. -.Senior Mike Vecchione (18-21-39) and junior Spencer Foo (14-22-36) are in the midst of the national scoring race as their

On the road last season: -.Dartmouth defeated RPI, 2-1, on Dec. 4, 2015 thanks to a third-period game winner from Brett Patterson. The victory was the first for Devin Buffalo, who made just his second career start in the game. It was the first conference loss of the year for the Engineers who came into the contest with a 4-0-2 mark and atop of the standings. -.Union earned a 3-0 shutout the following evening, thanks to a pair of first-period goals and a Vecchione empty-netter with 39 seconds left in regulation for the insurance marker.

By 9 p.m. Friday night, Dartmouth will have seen six of the top 11 scorers nationally, including the top four as they stand now. Here is how those six individuals have done against the Green in 2016-17: - 1st – Tyler Kelleher (UNH): 0-1-1 - 2nd – Mike Vecchione (Union): Play Friday - 3rd – Spencer Foo (Union): Play Friday - 4th – Brady Ferguson (Robert Morris): 2-1-3 (2 games) - T6th – Joe Gambardella (UML): 1-4-5 - T10th – Daniel Leavens (Robert Morris): 1-3-4 (2 games)

THE RAIN MAKER - .Cam Strong became the fourth freshman in as many years to score the first goal of the game against Princeton and set off the barrage of tennis balls onto the ice. The last three years have seen Alex Jasiek, Carl Hesler and Grant Opperman all net the marker in their first opportunity. -.Strong’s goal not only earned a spot on the DartmouthSports.com Plays of the Week, but was also named the No. 1 play of the week by the NCAA on Tuesday afternoon. -.For his goal against Princeton and then again the next night in the third period against No. 15 QU, Strong was tabbed as the DartmouthSports.com Male Athlete of the Week.

-.Dartmouth has scored 39 goals in 15 games this season. Of that total, 18 have come from the freshman class with Strong (7) and Warpecha (6) ranking first and second on the team. -.The 46.2% of goals from the rookies is far and away the most by any one class this season. -.Only Clarkson (20) has more goals from their freshman class amongst ECAC Hockey teams this season and the Golden Knights have played six more games than the Big Green. -.Dartmouth’s 1.20 goals per game and 12 goals at home from their freshmen are the most in the league, while the two game winners are tied for the conference lead.

WARPECHA’S MONTH-PLUS -.Since scoring his first career goal on Nov. 27 at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, no other rookie in ECAC Hockey has scored more goals than Daniel Warpecha’s six. -.In fact, in that time, Warpecha is tied with four other rookies from across the country for most goals by a freshman. Of those five players, only Warpecha is eligible for the NHL Entry Draft this June.

BUFF BACK THERE -.Junior Devin Buffalo has started all 15 games this season in goal for the Big Green, the most by a Dartmouth netminder to begin a campaign since Mike Devine ’08 started the first 17 games of 2006-07. -.Buffalo notched his second shutout of 2016-17 and of his career with a 32-save performance against Princeton. -.In both instances, the game following his shutouts, Buffalo has suffered a loss to the Bobcats. -.The Wetaskiwin, Alberta, native ranks sixth in the league in save percentage (.911) and seventh in goals against average (2.68).

vs. UNION

Freshman Will Graber moved back to defense for the first time since youth hockey in the Green’s contest with Princeton. Graber stepped up and delivered a two-goal performance, tripling his career total as he scored just once as a forward in his first 12 games in a Dartmouth uniform.

FIRST GAME ON DEFENSE

SPECIAL ON SPECIAL TEAMS -.After a dismal 0-for-43 showing on the power play in the first eight games of the season, the Big Green have appeared to remedy the issue on special teams. -.Dartmouth is 7-for-30 on the power play since that second game in Pittsburgh on Nov. 27, a success rate of 23.3 percent, fifth-best in the ECAC in that stretch.

SCORE AND SIT Corey Kalk notched his fifth goal of the season with a power-play score in the opening period of the Princeton game. In a cruel twist, Kalk was rewarded for his scoring effort with a trip to the penalty box as the second barrage of tennis balls earned the home team a bench minor for delay of game which was served by the man who sparked the onslaught.

BOB GAUDET HEAD COACH | DARTMOUTH CLASS OF 1981

20th SEASON AT DARTMOUTH 29th SEASON AS HEAD COACH Ivy League Players of the Year, Mike Ouellette earned the honor in 2005-06 while David Jones was given the title in 2006-07. Jones was also an All-America, giving Gaudet four back-to-back players to earn that distinction. Gaudet took over Brown’s coaching reins in 1988 and immediately went about transforming the Bears from a perennial cellar-dweller into one of the ECAC’s top programs. During his tenure, Brown steadily climbed in the league standings, from 12th in ’89 to eighth in ’90 and ‘91, fifth in ’92, third in ’93, fourth in ’94 and all the way to second in ’95. Since his return in 1997, Gaudet began the same process at Dartmouth. The Big Green finished 11th his first two years, eighth in 2000, fifth in ‘01, third in ‘05 and was tied for first in 2006-07. During Gaudet’s time at Brown, the Bears were crowned Ivy League champion twice (1991 and 1995) and, in 1993, made the school’s first NCAA appearance since 1976. In both 1993 and 1995, he was a finalist for Division I Coach of the Year. He was named ECAC Coach of the Year in 1995 after leading Brown to a second-place finish in the league, just one-and-a-half games behind first-place Clarkson. The Bears also spent much of the year in and out of the top 10 in the national polls. Gaudet became head coach of the Bears in 1988 following a five-year tenure as an assistant coach with the Big Green. He assisted in all aspects at Dartmouth under head coaches George Crowe and Brian Mason, while coordinating recruiting efforts and serving as varsity goaltender coach. In addition, he directed the junior varsity program his first season in Hanover. Gaudet graduated in 1981 with a degree in visual arts after four productive seasons for the Big Green hockey team. In 1979 and 1980, Gaudet led the team to Ivy League titles and appearances in the NCAA Frozen Four. As a senior, he served as co-captain and was a recipient of the Philip D. McInnis Award for spirit, loyalty and dedication to Dartmouth ice hockey. In 76 career games, he made a school-record 2,129 saves, while allowing only 299 goals for a 4.00 career goals-against average and an .877 save percentage. He had his most successful campaign as a sophomore when he recorded two of his fourcareer shutouts to go along with a 3.03 goals-against average. He was First Team All-Ivy in 1978-79 and 1979-80, and was a two-time recipient of the Canterbury Society Award for the best Ivy League goalie. Following graduation, Gaudet signed a free-agent contract with the Winnipeg Jets of the National Hockey League. He played for minor-league affiliates of Winnipeg in the CHL and IHL for one year before a knee injury cut short his promising career. Gaudet and his wife Lynne, also a 1981 Dartmouth graduate, reside in Etna, N.H., and have three children: sons Joe and Jim and daughter Kelly. Eldest son Joe graduated from Dartmouth in 2010, while Jim earned his degree from the College in 2012. Both Joe and Jim played four seasons with the Big Green with each serving as an alternate captain in their final seasons with the team. Like her father, Kelly was a goaltender as well as co-captain of the girl’s ice hockey team while at Hanover High School. Kelly is a member of the Class of 2017 at Dartmouth.

In the last several seasons, Gaudet has reached several key milestones, earning his 200th win behind the Big Green bench in 2010-11, eclipsing the 300-career win mark in the first game of 2011-12 and reaching 800 career games coached, doing so in a 1-1 tie at Vermont in 2013-14. In 2014-15, Gaudet reached both 250 wins at Dartmouth and 350 career wins between Hanover and his time at Brown. In 28 seasons as a head coach, including the last 19 at Dartmouth, Gaudet has worked with and developed some of the nation’s top talents. Eight former Dartmouth players suited up for NHL teams in 2010-11 alone and 11 total in that time. Several more former student-athletes also played in other professional leagues in the last two years, including the KHL, AHL, ECHL and the CHL. Entering the 2016-17 season, Gaudet ranks second all-time at Dartmouth with 279 wins, trailing only Big Green legend Eddie Jeremiah ’30, who racked up 308 victories in 26 seasons with the program. The 2015-16 season was special for Gaudet for both his current and former players. He guided the Big Green back to the ECAC Hockey semifinals for the seventh time, becoming the first team in conference history to reach the league’s final weekend of competition without having a single player earn a spot on any of the three all-conference teams, demonstrating a team-first mentality. Ben Lovejoy ’06 also helped the Pittsburgh Penguins capture the fourth Stanley Cup in franchise history and, in the process, became the first Dartmouth player since Myles Lane ’28 in 1929 to win the Stanley Cup. Lovejoy, the first New Hampshire-born player to win the Cup, brought the trophy back to Thompson Arena for a public event where he was introduced to the crowd by Gaudet whom Lovejoy credited with “giving me a second chance at hockey.” After nine successful seasons behind the Brown University bench from 1988-97, Gaudet returned to Hanover for the 199798 campaign. In 2010-11, Gaudet and the Big Green made huge strides to return to national prominence. Dartmouth finished the season ranked No. 15 in the nation after posting 19 wins and winning the ECAC Hockey Consolation Game in Atlantic City, N.J. At Dartmouth, Gaudet guided the Big Green to seven straight winning seasons from 2000-01 to 2006-07 and had 20-win seasons in 2002-03 and 2004-05. The 20-13-2 record in 2004-05 marked the team’s fifth consecutive campaign above .500, the first time that had happened in school history. Gaudet has also led the Big Green to seven straight home playoff series, and in 2001, the program made its first trip to the ECAC semifinals in 20 years. He earned his 200th career win against St. Lawrence on Feb. 11, 2005 . The Big Green has won two titles under Gaudet. In 2007 Dartmouth captured a share of its first Ivy title since Gaudet was in net in 1980. The 2005-06 season gave Dartmouth its first-ever ECACHL title. Gaudet was also named ECAC Hockey’s Coach of the Year, making him the second coach to earn the award with two separate teams. He was also a finalist for the Division I Coach of the Year award. Gaudet has now had two
