The recent United States Supreme Court ruling in the Miller v. Alabama case regarding mandatory life-without-parole sentences issued to juveniles will directly impact Dartmouth. After the 5-4 split decision, convicted murderer Robert Tulloch seeks relief under the ruling.

Tulloch was sentenced in April 2002 along with accomplice James Parker for the murder of Dartmouth professors Half and Susanne Zantop in January of 2001. The tale is well documented in Andrew Patti’s book Judgment Ridge: The True Story Behind the Dartmouth Murders.

The Week in Review Uncle Joe Comes to Dartmouth The Vice President of the United States of America, or as we prefer to refer to him as over here at The Review, “Crazy Old Joe,” visited The College this past week on Friday. The past few months of the campaign have seen the 69 year old politician fumble repeatedly with gaffes that have ranged from absurd (“I’ve known eight presidents, three of them intimately”) to abominable (“[the Republicans are] going to put y’all back in chains” to a predominantly African-American audience).

Ironically enough, Mr. Biden spoke at Cutter-Shabazz, an Academic Affinity house for those in the community of African descent.

While here, the Vice President managed to stay largely gaffe-free, which is somewhat of a feat in itself. Yet, turnout was low for the event with most students simply too busy to attend due to classes. Or simply too disenchanted. It appears that the love for the Obama campaign and its ancillaries has vanished in the wind along with his supposedly post-partisan politics.

Sadly enough, Dr. Biden did not avoid mistakes as well as her husband, falling into a rather unseemly metaphor which drew guffaws from the audience. Apparently, the words “deeply,” “big,” and other such flirtatiously suggestive words shouldn’t feature in candidates’ wives’ stump speeches. Surprisingly, seasoned candidates such as Mr. and Dr. Biden were surprised that sophomoric college students would laugh at such unintentional wordplay.

The O’Reilly Factor was also in attendance, hounding the Vice President to appear on the popular show and interviewing a few students around campus (including several staffers) for a humorous segment that unfortunately lambasted Dartmouth. Normally, The Review would be a little offended - but in The Factor’s defense, it was a motley group of fools at the Biden rally. After all, students in real majors can’t miss class - even for the Vice President.

All in all, the appearance was far from a smashing success and hinted of the likely defeat approaching the gentlemen in the White House .

This past Monday, Stafford County Superior Court Judge John Lewis ruled in favor of the League of Women Voters of New Hampshire and four individuals represented by the New Hampshire Civil Liberties Union who argued that the state’s updated voter registration law prevented out-of-state students from voting in New Hampshire in the upcoming elections.

Seen by some as an attempt by Republicans to disenfranchise college students, one of President Obama’s most loyal support groups, this law, passed in June over Governor John Lynch’s veto, required prospective voters to declare New Hampshire as their domicile, forcing them to register their cars through the New Hampshire Division of Motor Vehicles and obtain New Hampshire driver’s licenses.

With his decision, Judge Lewis reaffirmed that college students, regardless of their state of permanent residency, will be able vote in New Hampshire come November.

This ruling was met with opposition from many Republicans, including House Speaker Bill O’Brien, who suggested that allowing out-of-state students to vote in New Hampshire invalidates that right of bona fide residents.

“Merely being in New Hampshire does not give a person a right to vote,” he said. “One must intend to stay for at least an indefinite period and when you do you can vote and will become a resident.”

Granted, the student would no doubt be excited at the thought of casting their ballot in such an influential swing-state, especially given that New York will undoubtedly go blue.

But is it a right?

That remains a question for the courts and the legislature to battle over, but a vast majority of Americans remain in strong support of voter ID laws according to recent polls. The only question is: will the laws change before November? We here at The Review will continue to keep you updated in the ongoing saga of voter ID reform in New Hampshire.

Panhell Ditches Plans for New Sorority The Panhellenic Council has tabled discussions to bring a new sorority, Delta Zeta, to Hanover, according to president Sarah Wildes ‘13.

Despite present imbalances in the Greek system—there are 15 fraternities and nine sororities at present—the present “flawed” state of the Greek system has been cited as the driving force behind the decision. It is hardly a stretch to note the recent hazing controversy as anothing important factor.

This fall, 68% of women who participated in rush recieved a bid, down from 75% last year and 78% the year before, leading many to question the potential value of another option in the process.

“We’re part of the ‘silent majority.’”

Study Reveals Sexist Scientists...Supposedly A study concluding that science professors across the country hold marked biases against female undergraduates has been released by Yale University, condemning both male and female professors and attributing the lopsided tendencies to “subconscious cultural influences rather than overt or deliberate discrimination,” according to the New York Times. Unfortunately, it appears that the New York Times’ staff has about as much knowledge of statistics as it does of economics. That is, not very much.

By presenting professors with nearly identical applications—one “John” and one “Jennifer”—for a lab manager position, the study gaged the biases of 127 professors across the sciences. John was given a competence score of 4 and offered a starting salay of $30,328.

Jennifer was offered only $26,508 with a score of 3.3.

What the article did not highlight was the fact that only 30% of the professors queried responded to the study - and no effort was made to prevent professors from collaborating. If they did so, the professors would have quickly realized the purpose of the study. Not to mention the fact that unlike most freshmen at the College, the New York Times is blissfully unaware of the term “response bias.” Perhaps only sexists are alone and angry enough to respond to random requests for sociological studies?

Or perhaps this is a consequence of programs like WISP where women are given opportunities that are not available to male students. Perhaps, due to programs such as these, science professors automatically adjust downward the past experiences of female students. Or perhaps not.

Apparently the more believable explanation is that vast swaths of highly educated men and women are prevalent to otherwise unobservable and undetectable gender biases. The fact of the matter remains, this study revealed nothing but an interesting question. If that. But don’t worry, this piece of misinformation will soon be coming to a feminist near you. Prepare yourself for choruses of “Fair Pay” and “Misogynistic Pig.”

So, for all of you who don’t think that Dean Johnson is taking student input into account, don’t fret. She will craft policies based around exactly what the student body and this nebulous “silent majority” want.

Well, as long as what they want is what she wants, too.

After many students cited costs as a reason against the proposed rule requiring licensed bartenders to serve hard alcohol at parties, Johnson reassured students that “we won’t let the need for financial subsidies prevent us from going forward.”

“Going forward” must mean whatever Johnson wants it mean, because few if any students support her vision. In fact, it is quite common for students to voice concerns about not only the direction of Johnson’s plan, but also its lack of transparency and negligible cooperation with the student body.

Football Hopes High Despite Loss to Penn

After a pair of victories against two nonIvy opponents, Dartmouth lost its first game this season last night against Penn, leaving the Indians 2-1, 0-1 in the Ivy League.

It was a close game: although the Indians were trailing 0-20 at the half, they managed to pull it to within a score at the end of the game, finishing with a score of 28-21.

There was an interesting cross-sibling dynamic throughout the game. Penn’s Conner Scott, brother of former Dartmouth standout Tanner Scott ‘10, had a great game, catching eight passes for 89 yards. On the Indian side, Ryan McManus ‘15, brother of another standout former Dartmouth player Timmy McManus ‘11, made 75 yards and a touchdown. He was the favorite target of Alex Park ‘14, the Indian’s new starting quarterback. Park had only 90 yards in the first half but jumped back in the second, ending up with a career high of 279 yards, and 20 of 29 throws completed.

For one, the team is young, especially the receiving corps. It is also very deep, and currently has a surplus of talent. There is also plenty of excitement surrounding the quarterback position. Park has performed well in recent games and freshman quarterback Dalyn Williams has also brought excitement, with Coach Stevens saying: “He’s a good athlete who throws the ball very well. We’re excited to have him. He’s a sharp young man. He’s just very, very bright and is going to have a legitimate chance right off the bat…”

Other notable happenings during the game include Dominick Pierre ‘14 becoming the 25th Dartmouth player to surpass 1,000 career rushing yards. Dartmouth has had a strong recent tradition of running backs. Former standout Nick Schweiger ’12 is now playing in the NFL with the St. Louis Rams.

Next week Dartmouth will travel to Yale, which is currently one and two, and zero and one Ivy. It will be a great chance for the Indians to bounce back and get back on the right chance.

Also of note is Dartmouth defensive lineman Patrick Lahey being named as one of the candidates for the National Football Foundation College Hall of Fame NFF National ScholarAthlete Award. According to the Dartmouth Sports website: “Schools are limited to one nominee, who must be a senior or graduate student in their final year of eligibility, have a GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, have outstanding football ability as a first-team player or significant contributor, and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship.”

Hail to the Almighty Community Organizer Well, we all knew it was about time for Obama’s disturbingly bloated vanity to reassert itself. Just take a look at his version of the American flag that he posted on Twitter the other day. The red stripes are still there (not the right number but that’s fine) and they form the image of the United States. Nice. But what is very odd is that where the stars should be is the iconic Obama campaign sign. Is this what the President meant by fundamentally transforming America?

This is the manifestation of the Obama era mentality. Let’s all bow down to the Almighty Barack Obama. Let’s pledge our allegiance to him. He’s our savior.

Never have we had such an idolized politician in the history of America, and it’s especially laughable looking at his empty record.

Millions of Americans have been entranced by his message of hope and change, so much so, that they are completely blind to the fact that we are not better off than we were four years ago. A redesigned flag won’t change that - no n matter how much poor taste it’s in.

Interview with Professor Dirk Vandewalle:

Shear Editor’s Note: Associate Professor of Government Dirk Vandewalle has spent nearly a quarter century studying Libya and the dictatorship of Muammar Gaddafi, writing two books on the subject and serving as editor for two more. Recently, he served as an advisor in Libya, spending a number of months there as the country prepared for its first elections in over fifty years.

Executive Editor Coleman Shear sat down with Professor Vandewalle following the September 11th murder of U.S. Ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens and four other Americans.

The Dartmouth Review: After the embassy attack and anti-militia protests in Benghazi, do you see the militias as responding to the outcry against them?

Professor Dirk Vandewalle: Certainly you have to distinguish between what are considered in Libya to be genuine militias, credited militias of people that have come out of the civil war, and rogue militias consisting of people that had absolutely nothing to do with the civil war at all, but have very opportunistically formed themselves in its wake and are trying to gain all kinds of concessions from the government.

What happened in Benghazi was actually done by one of the rogue militias and what we have seen is that the government in Libya doesn’t have enough capacity yet to bring all of these militias under control. It’s trying very hard to do so, but it’s a continuing struggle.

Meanwhile, we have these rogue groups out there trying to pursue their own agendas at the expense of the government. It really is a very confusing situation at this particular point in time and the government is trying to integrate the legitimate militias into the government side.

They have done this in a number of ways: trying to incorporate them into the army, into the civil service police training, and so on.

On the other hand, it’s also very clear, particularly with the killing of Ambassador Stevens, that the government is at this point determined to do away with these rogue militias. There is an enormous amount of convergence between the government and the Libyan people. This was just one demonstration; there have been several like it over the last two months. What the people of Libya are saying is, ‘look we want law and order, and these rogue militias really have no place, these militias that align themselves with radical Islam.’

It’s quite different [than the Middle East] and we’ve seen now that in both Tunisia and Libya, and to some extent in Egypt, a civil society becoming quite sophisticated, politically, and is making its own demands, saying, ‘Look this is not us. There’s no room for them in North Africa.’

TDR: What role has the large Berber population in North Africa played? How have they affected the Arab Spring, despite it being largely an Arab event?

DV: This vocal minority, particularly in Tunisia, certainly in Morocco, and a little bit in Libya, has

DV: Initially a lot of people thought that, because of the civil war, there would be a major kind of dislocation that would take place. It turns out, for the kind of sweet oil that Europe wants in particular, the Saudis make a lot, so there was much less of an upheaval than anyone had expected.

My hunch is that, to a large extent, the pull mechanism is still provided by Saudi Arabia, which is really the sweet producer and will continue to be so for a while. The market is changing a little bit, but overall we have been looking at a steady ratcheting up in price, but nothing major or Earth-shaking over the couple of years or so.

TDR: How do you think the evolution of moderate Islamic parties will play out in North Africa? How will North Africa’s relationship with the West be affected?

—Professor Dirk Vandewalle—

I don’t want to underestimate the differences, they are not so big.

There is a Federalist movement in Cyrenaica that has been singularly unsuccessful. It is headed

by Ahmed al-Senussi, the grandson of the former King, and all polling indicates that this group is not very successful. They have about 5,000 followers, but the point is also that they started a political party that has very little traction in Libya. Furthermore, it’s splitting even more.

The traditional division of east and west in Libya has really been exaggerated. If anything, the civil war has brought to light the fact that if Libyans really want to move forward, they have to find some kind of solution. While there might be some kind of decentralization, the current leadership is against it. The kind of autonomy that the radical Federalist figures in Cyrenaica are asking for has gotten very little traction.

We also shouldn’t forget that the fact that both sides depend on the oil industry, and the infrastructure and the bureaucratic system that supports it. The effort to market oil has led to an integration of Libya that makes this Federalist movement a non-starter at this particular point of time.

DV: So far what we’ve seen in Tunisia and Libya is that both countries, particularly Libya, have opted for a more personalistic interpretation of Islam—a much more moderate version—and these protests that we’ve seen in Benghazi are an indication that people are very clearly saying, ‘Look, we don’t want any radical vision of Islam.’

In a sense, a lot of Libyans go back to the Sufi model of Islam and the Samussiya movement in the 19th century. That played a major influence and was extended during the kingdom, so the population of North Africa is saying, We don’t want anybody, whether it is Islamists or a secular party, telling us what we should be doing. Civil societies are growing, we want to go our own way.’ We are going to see that North Africa could very well become the end of the radical Islamic.

What we’ve seen in the rest of the Arab World, and certainly what we’ve seen in Libya, is that Islamic parties don’t do well at all. I think over time they’ll do a little bit better, in part because they were so repressed under Gaddafi that they really had no organization to start with. They also had some pretty unsophisticated political programs for the election and so on, so I think they will improve their standing, but it’s very clear to me they will not come to dominate the political landscape.

In many countries, particularly in North Africa, the radical Islamists really are a fringe. That is true both in Tunisia and in Libya. So far, I think that will be a major marker between North Africa and the Middle East. In North Africa, the overall political sentiment will be a bit more secular, although every political movement incorporates some Islamic elements, just not the kind of radical Islam that we’ve seen.

Expert on Libyan Affairs TDR: Right now it seems like Americans are seeing two very different images painted by the pundits on both sides. On one hand, we see the images of this Libyan outcry against the militias and extremism.

On the other hand, we see the controversy over the recent film portraying the Prophet Mohammad, the mass protests, and the storming of the embassy.

Which picture do you think is more accurate for the future of the Middle East and North Africa?

TDR: Did you ever visit Libya during the Gaddafi period?

DV: In general, the more peaceful, more thoughtful interpretation is more likely. You shouldn’t take the example of what a few radicals are doing as the embodiment of Islam, just like you shouldn’t take what a few crackpots are doing in making a movie about Islam as being representative of Christians in the United States. My hunch is that Libyans and North Africans fall in between.

For all that has happened, these are relatively advanced political systems. They’ve had their traditional state building. They’ve had their nationalist struggles. This is not the tabula rasa. For that reason, we’ll see that they’re concerned about economic development and state building. Any kind of group, whether Islamic or non-Islamic, that does not accept that will be judged quite negatively by the population.

TDR: You’ve become one of the world’s foremost authorities on Libya. Are you currently working with the new Libyan government or the State Department on policy?

DV: Yes, I visited Libya all the way back. I started serious research in Libya in 1986 and I’ve been there every single year, several times a year, since.

TDR: How were you able to get in?

DV: I got in because I had a Belgian passport.

There was an embargo from the United States, and then from the United Nations, but I could go in as a Belgian, so I was the only researcher there for almost fifteen years.

TDR: What did you notice about the country during its under Gaddafi? What was the experience like?

You hear what you want to hear and no one else can say that what you’re doing is not correct, so you build your own world around it. That is essentially what Gaddafi became.

DV: I truly would describe Gaddafi’s Libya as almost totalitarian. Once you were inside, everyone assumed that you were legitimate, because how else would you be able to get into the country? It was relatively easy to do research and talk to people.

I was never followed or anything; I didn’t have a minder, but the atmosphere in the country was really scary. People were very scared about talking publicly.

It took very, very long to develop personal friends I could talk to in private. People were constantly looking over their shoulder and the whole system, even down to the every day life of people, was dominated by this political system and by Gaddafi.

As it got into the 1980s and 1990s there was an incredible secret security organization with an informer literally on every block, in every city, and in every village in Libya. People were very closely watched. It was very difficult to develop any personal contacts. It took a long time before I was able to work myself into that society.

TDR: What is a final message you can tell our readers about the future of Libya, North Africa, and the Middle East?

DV: Particularly looking at Libya, there may be some sign for optimism. Even after prolonged periods of dictatorship, and despite all the efforts by this very vicious regime to annihilate any kind of organized political interest and to fracture civil society, we may be moving toward a real political system. It may not be perfect, and it certainly will take a lot longer o us, it may look very strange that you may pledge until it resembles a modern democracy, but I think that there is optimism for countries allegiance or hold allegiance even now for a dictator like that.

Robert Kaiser ‘39 Dies at 95 I

Beloved Son of Dartmouth and Psi Upsilon house advisor Robert Kaiser ’39 passed away on August 22. After 46 years of serving Dartmouth and Psi Upsilon, Kaiser died of congestive heart failure. He was 95 years old.

Along with his wife Evelyn ‘88H, who passed away just three weeks after Bob’s death, the Kaisers have been truly dedicated members of both Psi Upsilon and the Dartmouth community at large. They

I know of no one more loyal to Dartmouth or Psi U than Mr. and Mrs. K.” “He remembered every Psi Upsilon from when he went to Dartmouth, and the brothers when he became advisor to the house,” recalls Woram. “Not

Upon returning home from the War, Kaiser became the CEO of three subsidiaries of Magnus Chemical.

When the company was bought out in 1964, he moved back to Hanover to work for his cherished alma mater. In 1965 Kaiser joined the development office and led the newly-formed Bequests and Estate Planning Program. His efforts in this role turned Dartmouth’s program into one of the leading ones in the country. Kaiser then used his skills in this emerging field to help raise money for Psi Upsilon.

Kaiser also passed along his business acumen to brothers. John Saer remembers his sophomore summer when Kaiser hired Saer and other brothers to paint the house. “We had to enter into a contract with Mr. K, he established correct business practices,” remembers Saer. “He was our customer. I learned how to conduct myself in a business setting.”

Hood Debuts “Crossing Cultures”

By Rebecca Hecht The Hood Museum of Art’s newest exhibition, Crossing Cultures: The Owen and Wagner Collection of Contemporary Aboriginal Australian Art provides a titillating view into one of the newest developments in contemporary art – art created by the Aboriginals in Australia, who are still a strong presence on the continent. For some foreign cultures, the best way to get a grasp of their multifaceted identities is to look at their literature, their political leaders, or the products of their industries. For the Aboriginals, however, the fastest and best route to comprehension is through their art. According to Mr. William Owen, one of the donors of the exhibition, the Aboriginals choose to create art in order to take an active role in educating outsiders on their culture, which has heretofore been something they chose to keep to themselves. For Mr. Owen, seeing these works of art was not just an enlightening experience—it was life changing. After his first exposure to Aboriginal Art in 1988 in a gallery in SoHo, he soon found himself in Australia, starting an unending journey to learn more about the Aborigines and their artistry.

The story of Aboriginal Australian Art begins in the early 1970s, in the very center of Australia: Papunya. A group of older men began to paint scenes from stories of their ancestors. These scenes display the continuing importance that the Aborigines place on the land that surrounds and sustains them as it did their ancestors. As the exhibit explains, “these artists presented a powerful visual language that had never been seen by outside audiences and revolutionized the way in which non-Indigenous people related to the Western Desert and the towering systems of knowledge that it contains.”

These artists’ works in the 1970s were a political act. The paintings and sculptures were not simply aesthetic endeavors. Up until this point in time, the Aborigines had tried to distance themselves from the outside world. In the 1970s, they started to see the importance in explaining their existence and their history to outsiders, so that their position in Australia could be understood. For this reason, the more recent Aboriginal Australian art should be understood and appreciated for its ability to also present a narrative, not just provide an image. These Aboriginal artists in the seventies paved the way for future indigenous

Whereas art in the Aboriginal communities used to be an activity only for older men, who were thought to better understand and connect to their ancestral stories, today there has been an important shift in the demographics of these artists. The Hood’s contemporary Aborigines art, all of which is from the last two decades, shows that now art from this region is done predominantly by female artists of all ages. These women have carried on the responsibility of telling their story to outsiders, and have found the outside world quite receptive to what they have to say.

The stories in these works tell of the Aborigines’ ancestors, traditions, and the land they live on. Many of the more traditional works displayed at the Hood Museum depict desert scenes. As the exhibit explains:

“Many people mistakenly imagine the deserts to be places barren of life, but the stories related in these bold acrylic paintings demonstrate how extreme and alive this landscape is and how it nourishes those who live with it, both physically and spiritually. The artists represented in this gallery chronicle […] the artists’ own quotidian and spiritual engagement with the land. The plants, animals, and people who have survived in this landscape are heroicized in these works.”

The bright, geometric traditional Aboriginal Australian Art was at first quite foreign and surprising to view, and it is difficult to understand how it should be interpreted.

However, there is undeniably something in it that makes it so intimate, or even “genuine” as Mr. Owen called it. Maybe it is the fact that so many of the paintings are crafted not with a brush, but with fingers, as is the case in Blue Water Hole (2003) by Rosella Namok. In this painting, the artist remembers the times she used to swim in a water hole in the afternoons after school. The ripples of the water created by her fingers as well as unique use of a squeegee, gently cover the “reflection” she sees in the water, which is actually an image of her as she remembers her childhood self. But there is something very intimate about seeing these lines created by her fingers. It almost feels as if you are watching her hand move in the gesticulation it would make if she were verbally telling the story.

This nostalgia, or the struggle to keep the past fresh in mind, is a recurrent theme throughout much of the art in the exhibit. The concept of

time is very interesting in the indigenous culture.

As Mr. Owen put it, there is no past, present, or future in Aboriginal culture. They do not see the past as something over and done with, and the future as something that will bring drastic changes. In their eyes, the culture and traditions of the society is so important and vital to their survival that it should be consistent and unending.

Kaningarra (2000) by Susie Bootja Bootja is an interesting example of this mindset. This acrylic abstract painting is typical of these traditional desert scenes. The artist employs a technique of placing many small dots of paint on the entire canvas, similar to pointillism, to create a singular image when viewed from far away. This technique, especially when used with acrylic paint, which has a bright shimmer to it, breathes life into the painting. The static art suddenly and startlingly becomes dynamic. In Kaningarra, the many brightly colored dots surrounding the black circle in the middle (which represents a water hole) are meant to bring out the vast diversity and energy of the life that is created by the water. The life surrounding the water appears to be both pulled in towards the water hole and its vitality but also propelled away from it due to the energy it has gained there.

But of course, a society surrounded by a world that is constantly reorganizing and advancing will always be fighting an impossible battle in trying to remain unchanged. One room of the Hood’s exhibit is dedicated to showing Aboriginal Australian Art that depicts more clearly how the majority of Aborigines live in Australia today. Unlike the painting and sculptures of the other rooms, this room includes photographs by Aboriginal photographers. These photographs are striking not only for their subjects, but also for the direct contrast they make to the traditional designs on the paintings. One of these Aborigines photographers, Destiny Deacon, has photographed three Aboriginal women in her work, Last Laughs (1994). These women are in an urban area of

Australian Aboriginal Art Exhibit sea, though awesome and uncontrollable, is not frightening, but rather, reassuring and calming. The drama in Wave Break is easily satisfying without knowing the reason why Hobson was driven to paint something of this sort, but I was lucky enough to hear Mr. Owen relay the story behind it.

Hobson’s Aboriginal society was forced to move to Cape York after World War II, and was left with no access to the coast. This move away from the sea was traumatic to the inhabitants and their hunter-gatherer systems, which were so closely connected to and dependent upon the land their tribe had lived on for years.

ith a mixture of reds and blues, these young artists remember their traditional roots, but are honest about the poor state many Aboriginal societies have fallen into over the past century.

Dartmouth Art Kicks Into Gear

As the fall term began, Hopkins Center and student-run ensembles auditioned potential new members. Both ’16s and upperclassmen tried out for Dartmouth’s student-run a cappella groups, dance ensembles, and improv comedy groups, as well as Dartmouth’s Glee Club, Gospel Choir, Symphony Orchestra, and Barbary Coast Jazz Ensemble. A cappella auditions, affectionately called “AcaRush” were held last weekend, the day after Dance Auditions for SHEBA, Fusion, Ujima, and Sugarplum.

Many multitalented ‘16s were exhausted from singing and dancing all night. The talent pool for both men and women a cappella auditions was significantly smaller than last year, but there were many gems whose voices and personalities fit beautifully in Dartmouth’s a cappella world. Two of the all male groups, the Brovertones and Taal, took at least seven new members each. The Brovertones are excited to host this year’s Spring Sing with their seven “Brovergnomes” and spend Thanksgiving together, says Thomas Pears ’15. The Decibelles are equally excited about the four “Babybelles,” who make their official debut at a Baby Show on October 24th. The Decibelles are excited to step up this year’s winter tour: the group will travel around the Northeast and into Canada, singing for Dartmouth Clubs and accompanied by men’s groups at universities.

The Barbary Coast Jazz Ensemble welcomed a group of freshmen as well. Ryan McWilliams ’14 said Ms. Hassett is a sophomore at the College and Arts & Culture Editor of The Dartmouth Review.

Barbary Coast will continue to blend Latin style with their big band sound this winter when Gregorio Uribe visits Dartmouth, and the senior show this spring will showcase six to eight ‘13s. “Definitely a lot on our plate this year, but I think I can say that everybody in Coast is pumped for what lies ahead.”

The Glee Club took a whopping thirteen ‘16s; eight men and five women. Bailey Hoar ’13, a senior Glee Club member, said, “After losing such a strong class of 12s, we’re really excited for these new members to join us! They’re involved in a broad range of musical activities—voice lessons, a cappella, etc.—which is really great.” The Glee Club’s fall concert will include Schubert’s Mass in G, with string and organ accompaniment, as well as an enchanting Eric Whitacre piece, “5 Hebrew Love Songs.” This coming winter is also very exciting for the Glee Club, as they will perform a fully-staged and costumed Candide. The five ’13 music majors in Glee Club are also planning the spring concert, which will showcase the seniors.

The new school year brings excitement and growth for the Dartmouth Film Society as well. With the addition of the Black Family Visual Arts Center comes a brand-new Loew Auditorium, the new home of film screenings. This fall’s series is “The Return,” which includes weekend showings of films like The Bourne Legacy, A Woman of Paris, A History of Violence, and Tell No One. The Dartmouth Symphony Orchestra has added quite a few violinists and other talented instrumentalists to the group. The ‘16s debut their musical talents with the orchestra with two concerts th’13 with Haydn’s Cello Concerto in C Major and pianist Richard Fu ’13 with Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4 in G Major. The Orchestra returns to Spaulding November 3rd to play Debussy, Dvorak, and Krommer.

The Dartmouth Theatre Department is producing Tony Kushner’s Pulitzer-prize-winning play “Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes, Part One: Millenium Approaches,” under the direction of Carol Dunne (director of last spring’s “Hairspray”).

The performances are the first two weekend in November, with Sam Van Wetter ‘16 playing the role of Prior Walter. Other freshmen are involved as well, both on and behind the stage.

Dance auditions this year were modeled after the men’s a cappella auditions, and the groups were thrilled by the result. Rachel Ofori ’14 said, “The format not only exposed 16’s to all the wonderful groups at Dartmouth, but it also united the dance community. The amount of talent that we saw come through auditions was absolutely mind blowing.”

With the ‘16s’ matriculation comes another strong class of musicians, actors, and artists. It’s wonderful to see the freshmen delving in to Dartmouth’s arts community so quickly. n

As the autumnal march begins in Hanover, the cold sets in and the palate seeks warmth. Gone are the days of Corona and gin and tonics; the falling leaves usher in a time of mediocre pumpkin ales and now barely perceptible memories of trick or treating.

My sophomore fall I was bereaved to be away from Hanover, missing that wonderful time of year when freshman ‘shmob it up and sophomores put on their best rush faces.

I was at a pregame event at the College of the Holy Cross. The Busch Light was a far cry and sad replacement for my beloved Keystone Light.

I needed something stronger to dull my pain and yearning. I looked in the fridge and found a six pack of hard cider –I pulled out a bottle and quaffed the nectar deeply. It was delicious, but needed more oomph to sate the granite of New Hampshire rumbling deep in my muscles and my veins.

I continued to scrounge around the apartment and finally found a bottle of Jack Daniels. I surreptitiously filled the empty space in my cider bottle with the delightful and familiar bourbon, topping my drink off, as it were. Covering the bottle with my thumb, I gave it a swirl, and took a sip before exhaling appreciatively.

Suddenly, just like the ‘90s kids in the Applejack’s commercials, everything was sunshine and rainbows, and that damn catchphrase “we eat what we like!” was stuck in my head. After three or so iterations of the drink (my mind was substantially dulled after two), I spent the rest of night exclaiming wandering up to strangers and exclaiming, “I drink what I like!” Despite the curious looks I received, once they tasted the beverage, they knew I was onto something.
