The Week in Review PanHell’s Trojan Horse In a surprising move, five sorority representatives on the Panhellenic Executive Council, including its President and two Vice Presidents, distributed an email to campus on Thursday the 9th in which they explained their “decision to abstain from Winter Recruitment this term.” In the email, entitled “A Call to Action,” the protesters outlined five issues they hoped to address by refusing to organize winter rush: the need to stop “blindly empowering fraternities,” the “exorbitant” expense of participation in Greek Life, the superficiality of the rush process, the need for a more inclusive environment, and the need to move beyond “drinking and alcohol” as a focal point for the Dartmouth Greek system.

The message went on to make an “incomplete” list of demands for reforms to the Greek system, including financial aid for house dues and tougher policies for COS cases concerning sexual assault. Although the authors insisted that suspending rush for the quarter would “provide [them] with the time and resources [they] need to push for necessary, progressive change,” many sorority members expressed frustration and confusion. It appears that the email authors acted independently of their sisterhoods: members of the represented sororities said they had found out the previous night at meetings that Panhell members from their houses would be refusing to organize rush this term.

The email authors included Panhell President Eliana Piper ’14 of Sigma Delt, Vice President of Operations Michelle Khare ’14 of AZD, Vice President of Public Relations Jenni Gargano ’14 of KKG, Programming Chair Kate Shelton ’14 of KDE, and Programming Chair Alex Leach ’14 of EKT. Although these five women clearly believed their boycott would stop girl’s recruitment from happening (their email included an apology to students who had planned to rush this winter), this will not be the case. A subsequent email from Panhell inviting Dartmouth women to sign up for winter recruitment went out on Thursday evening.

It seems that the protesting Panhell executives have not accomplished what they set out to achieve – the disruption of rush activities for the winter term – but their actions have certainly been a focus of conversation on campus this week. However, with Greek participation rates still rising and a community that is already increasingly self-aware about the skeletons in its closet, Dartmouth may remember this abrupt and short-lived agitation as a sideshow to (and perhaps a distraction from) the real pushes for reform that are currently moving through the College.

Gender Neutral Bathrooms?

The gender-neutral bathroom is a fairly new concept that is being introduced in locations across the United States.

Universities have been particularly aggressive in adapting gender-neutral bathroom policies in hopes of creating a more LGBTQ-friendly environment on their campuses, with the Roger Williams University School of Law being the latest

According to RWU Law’s “Director of Diversity and Outreach” Deborah Johnson, “The purpose of this new policy is to welcome all RWU community members and visitors to use restroom facilities according to their gender presentation or expression.” Johnson explains that the Law School’s LGBTQ task force recommended the switch to gender-neutral bathrooms, and goes on to explain that “These changes promote widespread LGBTQ diversity and inclusion at RWU Law, which is indeed our intent, and are ones that are in line with the best practices of several progressive higher education institutions nationwide.”

At this point, it is unclear whether the RWU Law policy requires the installation of new gender-neutral bathrooms as a third option in the dormitories or whether it would mean relabeling the existing men’s and women’s bathrooms as gender-neutral. Unfortunately, each of these options is problematic. While making existing men’s and women’s bathrooms gender-neutral would require no real expense for the University, having people of both sexes in the same bathroom could prove to be very uncomfortable for both male and female students, most if not all of whom would be used to a more traditional men-only or women-only setup.

On the other hand, while constructing new gender-neutral bathrooms as a third option would avoid alienating students used to a traditional bathroom setup, this option would likely prove extremely expensive as it would involve renovating most if not all floors of the dormitory buildings, a price that RWU Law of all schools can ill afford to pay. RWU Law is currently ranked a “fourth tier” law school, making it one of the least desirable law programs in the country. Striving to improve their educational offerings and nationwide reputation would seem to be a more judicious use of financial and administrative resources than constructing a new set of

bathrooms.

Overall, the ongoing push for gender-neutral bathrooms is utterly unnecessary. If an LGBTQ individual (or anyone else for that matter) does not feel comfortable using a traditional men’s or women’s bathroom, that person should take advantage of the single-occupancy handicap bathrooms that are found throughout public facilities across the country, including the ones here at Dartmouth. In this way, these individuals can feel comfortable without an unessecary switch to entirely gender-neutral bathrooms on a much larger scale.

Death of a Lion: Former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, known as the Lion of Israel by those who supported and those who feared him, died on January 11th of this year.

Unlike any recent president of the United States, Sharon was a career military officer. Israelis knew him as a lifelong advocate for his view of justice and as a man willing to give his life for his people. Sharon was once famously quoted as saying, “There is no bullet-proof vest in my size.”

Born in a farming community in the British Mandate of Palestine in 1928, Sharon began his career with the Haganah, one of the precursors to the Israeli Defense Forces. Throughout his career, Sharon was known for being insubordinate and disregarding the orders of his superiors, instead choosing to pursue what he thought was the best course of action. Despite the risks, this approach worked for Sharon, who quickly developed a reputation as a tactical genius. He rose rapidly through the ranks of the IDF, and despite several severe injuries, he went on to become a top-ranking commander.

The Week in Review race for the Republican presidential nominee, it is hard to deny that this incident could harm his already controversial image. Both Democrats and far-right conservatives fear the potential bipartisan appeal of a moderate Republican, especially after Christie’s easy victory last November in the blue state of New Jersey. This bridge-closure scandal provides ample opportunity for his opponents to paint the governor as a power-hungry bully likely to abuse the office of President.

The US Department of Justice was very eager to open a detailed investigation of the George Washington Bridge incident this week, which has led many prominent conservatives to accuse Attorney General Eric Holder and his department of partisanship. Christie’s supporters have argued that the DOJ was quick to sweep many scandals of the Obama Administration under the rug, but reacted much more rapidly and fiercely in the face of a potential Republican scandal. Despite the uproar, Internet research firm YouGov revealed in a recent poll that public opinion of Christie remains “virtually unchanged” from a month ago. Will “Bridgegate” be a burden for Christie’s possible Presidential run? His opponents certainly hope so, but only time will tell.

I miss the days when boycotts advanced more than just the protestors’ sense of self. massacre, in which a Lebanese Christian militia unit massacred Palestinian civilians. While a commission found that no Israeli was directly responsible for the event, Sharon publically blamed himself for not taking further steps to ensure the militia would act in a civilized and humane manner while carrying out its routine duties, and stepped down from his position as Minister of Defense in the aftermath of the massacre.

Over the next two decades, he rose up through various political positions, eventually becoming the leader of the center-right political party Likud. In the face of a Palestinian Intifada, Sharon became Israel’s eleventh Prime Minister in 2001. As Prime Minister, he moved away from the Israeli right, eventually founding his own party. When summarizing his political position, Sharon once stated, “I begin with the basic conviction that Jews and Arabs can live together. I have repeated that at every opportunity, not for journalists and not for popular consumption, but because I have never believed differently or thought differently, from my childhood on.”

Like his successor and fellow centrist Ehud Olmert (whose corruption should not be associated with Sharon,) he advocated for a two-state solution on Israel’s terms for the purpose of bringing security to Israel. Through his actions in life, Ariel Sharon taught Isrealis to fight for what they believe in and to remain calm in the face of seemingly impossible tasks. He thought of himself foremost as a Jew who strove for peace above all else.

Though he did great things, he always thought of himself as a simple farmer, maintaining a list of every newborn animal on his family farm. One of his most memorable pieces of advice is this: “A lie should be tried in a place where it will attract the attention of the world.”

A Revelatory Book Former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates recently released a memoir of his service under the Bush and Obama administrations entitled Duty: Memoirs of a Secretary at War. In this book, Gates gives readers an inside look into the decision making processes of both the Bush and Obama administrations, and criticizes key players from each.

It would be easier to brush off these criticisms if they came from any other public servant, but Gates is a highly respected individual and is regarded as a team player when it comes to partisan politics. In his memoir, Gates criticizes the Bush administration for focusing too much on Iraq when Afghanistan should have been the American priority in the region. However, he also praises President Bush as a decisive leader who always had the troops’ best interests in mind. By contrast, he is much less kind to key figures within the Obama administration. Gates criticizes President Obama himself for never having the same level of commitment to military goals that his predecessor did and for being comparatively distrusting of top military leaders. Additionally, he lambasts Vice President Joseph Biden for having been on the wrong side of every significant American foreign policy decision of the last forty years,

and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for admitting in private that she only opposed the 2007 surge in Iraq to help her presidential prospects in the 2008 primary.

Gate’s criticisms of President Obama are hardly surprising at this point, who with three years to go is already well on his way to lame duck status. On the other hand, his revelations about Biden and Clinton are more important. While many Americans view the Vice President as bumbling and utterly incompetent, to have it confirmed so vividly by a figure as high ranking and as well respected as Gates should conclusively put to rest any talk of Biden as the Democratic candidate in 2016. Additionally, Clinton’s admission that she took a stance on a military issue for political reasons is deeply unimpressive. Although many Democrats seem to still view her as a shoe-in for president in 2016, the specter of the Benghazi cover up and subsequent scandal, combined with details like this from Gates should make it fairly easy for any competent Republican candidate to defeat her on the national stage.

Christie’s Bridge to Nowhere Good Last week, incriminating email-based evidence emerged suggesting that high-ranking staffers in New Jersey Governor Chris Christie’s administration intentionally caused traffic chaos in the city of Fort Lee, New Jersey.

Port Authority director and Christie appointee, David Wildstein, initially claimed that a traffic study was the reason for several lane closures on the George Washington Bridge in early September 2013. These closures caused traffic backups and enormous jams in the town of Fort Lee as the George Washington Bridge is the world’s busiest bridge and a main gateway between New Jersey and New York City. Following Christie’s re-election in late November, suspicions began to arise that this closure was not only unnecessary, but it was also a tactic to punish Mayor Mark Sokolich for not endorsing Christie in the gubernatorial election. Emails between Wildstein and Christie’s deputy chief of Staff, Bridget Kelly, surfaced this week and seem to confirm that political foul play was involved.

Governor Christie has been questioned about the issue since early December, but continues to deny any knowledge of the alleged illegal activities of his staffers. Wildstein resigned before the damning emails were revealed last week. Immediately after they were released, Christie fired Bridget Kelly and has since accepted the resignations of multiple other members of his staff, including Port Authority executive Bill Baroni.

Although he accepted complete responsibility for the actions of his staff members, as an executive should, no evidence has emerged to suggest that Governor Christie had any involvement or knowledge of the criminal activity occurring within his administration. During a press conference held on January ninth, Christie continued to strongly reject accusations that he orchestrated the scandal or persuaded his assistants to carry it out on his behalf.

A Deal With The Devil?

On January 20th, a deal between Iran and six major world powers intended to curb Iran’s nuclear program will go into effect. The agreement, announced in November after intense negotiations in Geneva, requires that Iran stop enriching its uranium beyond 5 percent, eliminate its current stockpile of highly enriched uranium, and open its nuclear sites to more frequent inspections. Iran must also refrain from building any new uranium enrichment facilities. In return, the socalled P5+1 nations (the United States, United Kingdom, Russia, China, and France, plus Germany) will provide up to $7 billion in sanctions relief, including $4.2 billion of seized oil revenue. The goal of the agreement, which lasts six months, is to give negotiators time to develop a more comprehensive, long-term plan to restrict Iran’s nuclear capabilities.

While Obama hailed the deal as a first step towards “a future in which we can verify that Iran’s nuclear program is peaceful,” many foreign leaders and members of Congress questioned Iran’s true intentions. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been particularly vocal about his distrust of Iran. He has called for a complete end to the country’s nuclear enrichment program and doubts that the current agreement goes far enough.

In December, a bipartisan group of senators echoed Netanyahu’s sentiment when they introduced a bill that would impose further economic sanctions on Iran should it violate the terms of the agreement. The 26 senators initially backing the bill, equally divided between Republicans and Democrats, say that additional sanctions are necessary to ensure that Iran cooperates. While President Obama has publicly opposed the bill, it has been picking up steam in Congress and currently has the support of 59 senators, of whom 16 are Democrats. This level of support is sufficient for the bill to pass, and it is close to the two-thirds majority that would be needed to override the President’s threatened veto.

On Monday, those questioning Iran’s intentions were given another reason to be skeptical. The Los Angeles Times reported that “key elements” of the nuclear agreement between Iran and the P5+1 nations are “contained in an informal, 30page text not yet publicly acknowledged by Western officials,” according to Iran’s chief negotiator. Adding to this skepticism, on Tuesday Iranian President Hassan Rouhani boasted on his Twitter page that the United States and other world powers “surrendered” to Tehran in the nuclear agreement.

“Our relationship w/ the world is based on Iranian nation’s interests. In #Geneva agreement world powers surrendered to Iranian nation’s will,” the tweet reads.

While President Obama maintains that the deal represents “concrete progress” towards a long-term settlement with Iran, these latest statements by Tehran will cause many to continue to question whether Iran feels sufficient pressure to comply with the terms of the agreement. Given Iran’s questionable intentions and President Obama’s history of empty threats, indecisive negotiations, and a fear of direct action, it is not hard to see why lawmakers and our allies in the region alike doubt that this current agreement will facilitate any real change in Iran’s nuclear program or ambitions. n

Entrepreneurship at Dartmouth

By Matthew R. Zubrow Our College surprisingly lacks a formal academic environment dedicated to the pursuit of entrepreneurship.

Indeed, as compared with many of our peer institutions, whether it be in the Ivy League or elsewhere, we have been at a significant disadvantage when it comes to the channeling of school resources towards the encouragement and proliferation of this pursuit. Most notably, Harvard has its Technology and Entrepreneurship Center (TECH), UPenn has the Weiss Tech House, New Haven has its Yale Entrepreneurial Society (YES), and Cornell’s Entrepreneurship@Cornell.

Unlike these organizations that cohesively bring together a range of liberal arts, engineering, and graduate resources for the goal of advising and growing students’ business innovation, Dartmouth unfortunately has no such center. Instead, we have a myriad of relatively separate and unconnected student groups. These include Tuck’s Entrepreneurship Club, the undergraduate Dartmouth Entrepreneurial Society, the Dartmouth Engineering Entrepreneurship Program (DEEP) and the PhD Innovation Program at Thayer, Tuck’s Entrepreneurship Initiative (which includes such programs as the Ventures Entrepreneurship Conference, the Start-up Hub, and the Center for Private Equity and Entrepreneurship), and the Office of the Provost supported Dartmouth Entrepreneurial Network (DEN).

Despite the existence of the aforementioned plethora of dedicated organizations, Dartmouth suffers from a dearth of interdisciplinary coordination in practice among its entrepreneurial efforts, and this is something that is particularly important when it comes to promoting startup innovation on college campus.

This clear overall lack of campus-wide coordination of entrepreneurial efforts, however, is about to change with the establishment of Dartmouth’s new Office of Entrepreneurship & Technology (OETT), and its related $2.6 million dollar Innovation Center and New Venture Incubator. The center and incubator will focus on the beginning phases of the entrepreneurial process, such as idea formulation and early stage startup development. At the same time, the related Dartmouth Regional Technology Center will offer assistance to entrepreneurial ventures that are already well off the ground.

When put together, these organizations and the umbrella OETT group are designed to spearhead the College’s entrepreneurial initiatives and will incorporate under its auspices the Dartmouth Entrepreneurial Network (DEN), the Dartmouth Regional Technology Center, and the Technology Office. The OETT will be dually led by bioengineering professor at Thayer Dr. Tillman Gerngross, who is newly appointed an associate provost, and Trip Davis ’90, a tech entrepreneur who returns to Hanover from his previous role as Mr. Zubrow is a sophomore at the College and a Vice President at The Dartmouth Review.

an administrator at the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business. Before this, Mr. Davis, also a 1994 graduate of Darden, was an entrepreneurial travel executive.

Dr. Gengross on the other hand has helped found a number of successful biotech companies, including Glycofi, Inc. (where he was the firm’s Chief Scientific Officer before it was purchased by Merck & Co.) and Lebanon-based, 70-employee Adimab, LLC. He has also worked as a venture advisor at SV Life Sciences (SVLS), a venture capital firm focusing on investing in biotechnology.

Also joining Dr. Gengross and Mr. Davis is Jamie Coughlin, who has served as the CEO of the Manchester, NH-based Abi Innovation Hub for the past three years before being tapped by Dartmouth to serve as the OETT’s director of new ventures and incubator programs. A native New Hampserhite and graduate of Princeton University, Mr. Coughlin expressed his excitement to the Union Leader about joining what he called the entrepreneurial “dream team” that Dartmouth has assembled to launch its new push in that field.

He added that “[t]his is a unique moment in time, in which we have the Dartmouth president, trustees and administration supporting this, and a team that’s been assembled with the experience and expertise to make it happen.” Coughlin further emphasized the tremendous unrealized potential that our College has regarding entrepreneurship, exclaiming, “Dartmouth represents such a large opportunity. There is so much raw material and a critical mass of talent for massive impact on the local, state and global startup ecosystem.”

Since taking office this past September, Dartmouth’s recently appointed president, Phil Hanlon ’77, has been a major force behind spearheading the College’s undergraduate entrepreneurship programming. Indeed, Hanlon made it clear in his inaugural address that encouraging student ventures and creativity would be one of his key priorities and a major part of his institutional vision. He spent a significant portion of that speech on the topic, notably declaring that “[s]tudent innovation is a well of unlimited creativity and potential on this campus, and one we must nurture.” He continues, “[w]hether students are interested in social ventures or business, the goal is to provide experiential learning opportunities and give them a world-class entrepreneurial competency, delivered by faculty and staff from across the campus as well as Dartmouth alumni around the world.”

Our new president has been one of the main driving forces behind growing Dartmouth’s offerings for enterprising undergrads interested in pursuing their passions for startups and bringing their ideas to life during their college years. Both the administration and the trustees readily embraced Hanlon’s entrepreneurial ambition for the College with open arms; so too have a number of alumni benefactors. Our Eigteenth President has already begun to demonstrate his fundraising prowess by raising $2.6 million in seed money needed to launch Dartmouth’s Innovation Center and New Venture Incu-

bator under OETT’s direction.

According to Mesrrs. Davis and Coughlin, who recently met with a member of The Review staff, the new center is slated to open its doors in early March as construction on the interior of the designated space (which is directly behind C&A’s and Remunto’s) will be beginning soon. The two were also pleased to announce that the organization’s venture program will be initiating an informational startup bootcamp for interested entrepreneurial students and will walk them through an engaging step-by-step process by which they will be assisted in accelerating their ideas and startups. Currently, the OETT is also busy working on bringing notable entrepreneurs to speak at Dartmouth and meet one-on-one with students.

At the same time, it is developing plans for a venture capital “pitch day” with top industry players, wherein students can seek funding and advice from leading names in the industry.

All told, we at The Review feel that Hanlon’s new and expanded entrepreneurship efforts, particularly those aimed at the less developed undergraudate level, are a much welcome addition to our campus and have the potential to yield great things for the College in the years to come. Dartmouth has the ability to foster a vibrant entrepreneurial culture amongst its students, and these steps will certaintly help move it in that direction.

While some might argue that the pursuit of entrepreneurship among undergrads is better left to the MITs, the CalTechs, and other similar, big research universities, this is a misguided view. To the contrary, there is much to be gained by utilizing the advantages of a smaller, mostly liberal arts-focused university like ours toward creating innovative ideas and groundbreaking startups—advantages not afforded to some of our larger peer institutions. A number of industry insiders and academics actually argue that a liberal arts education is not counterintiutive to fostering collegiate entrepreneurship. In fact, as John Dearborn, president of JumpStart, Inc., a non-profit that supports startups nationwide, argues in the Huffington Post, a liberal arts background actually creates better entrepreneurs than business majors.

In a rare moment of congruity, Dartmouth’s administration, spurred by President Hanlon, seems to be in touch with student interests and academic trends by beginning these new entrepreneurship initiatives. Given that, according to Boston Public Radio WGBH, almost 25% of college students in America today aspire to become entrepreneurs, this has led to a recent explosion in the number of courses and programs being offered in this area in the realm of higher education. With Hanlon’s dedication to entrepreneurship and the school’s significant investments in top-notch human capital and physical resources, Dartmouth certainly has the potential to emerge as a leader in this field of academia.

The Review cannot wait to see the products of the Mark Zuckerburgs, Steve Jobs, and Bill Gateses that will surely emerge from the initiative. n

Dartmouth’s NHL Alumni

By John C. Melvin The times are tough in Hanover. It blizzards one day just to rain the next, leaving a sheer layer of ice, claiming as victims those unfortunate masses headed to class. Winter has come.

Well, not actually. Hanover is still incredible, even if it could use a less bipolar weather pattern. But the hockey team has been off to a slow start this winter, putting a dampen on the excitement surrounding the school’s best sports atmosphere: Thompson Arena.

It’s been tough treading for the Boys of Winter. The season started with 8 games before Dartmouth could find its first victory against Harvard. The team currently sits at 3-12-2 overall and 2-8 in the ECAC. Not the strongest year the team has had in a while.

But some spots have been bright this year, both for current and past Dartmouth hockey players. Not least of all a victory against the 8th ranked Bulldogs of Yale University. Yet even better are the flourishing careers of recent Dartmouth graduates on the professional stage: the National Hockey League.

Coach Bob Gaudet certainly has seen his share of Dartmouth players move on and succeed in the professional ranks. The Ivy League was represented by 19 players in the NHL in the most reason full season 2012-2013. 6 of those 19 once donned the green and white in New Hampshire. No other team has more than 6 players in the NHL in the Ivy League.

and to quicken the return of hockey dominance to come, here is to a quick update on how several alumni have survived in the cut throat competitive NHL: T.J. Galiardi ’10: Calgary Flames: Galiardi only spent a year at Dartmouth (2006-2007 season), but it was an explosive stay while it lasted. Galiardi was second on the team in points, with 31 in 33 games as a Freshmen (second only to ’10 David Jones). Most recently he was traded by the San Jose Sharks to his hometown team, the Flames. Galiardi has 95 points in 254 career professional games. He is five points short of becoming only the 4th player from Dartmouth to score a 100 career points.

David Jones ’08: Calgary Flames: Joining Galiardi on the Flames is his one year teammate from Dartmouth. Jones played three years for Dartmouth from 2004-2007 and tallied 92 points in 100 career games. Jones left after a spectacular 44 point junior season. As a 7th year NHL pro, Jones has 138 points in 308 career games played. He trails only Lee Stempniak and Carey Wilson on the all-time Dartmouth NHL Points leaders list.

Nick Johnson ’08: Boston Bruins: Johnson has floated around the NHL for 5 years. Most recently, Johnson worked his way up from the American Hockey League where he had 20 points with 11 goals in just 23 games. The Bruins called him up to the 25 man roster in his hometown of Calgary for a game. Johnson was a 4 year Dartmouth player with over 125 points in 133 career games.

Tanner Glass ’07: Pittsburgh Penguins: A personal favorite, Tanner Glass is thriving in his role as Sidney Crosby’s enforcer. Glass regularly leads the team in hits and penalty minutes, and makes me remember why I so much prefer watching hockey rather than playing. The former Dartmouth Captain and 4-year player finished his career with 82 points in

104 games. In his 7th professional season, Glass has 7 points in 32 games. He most recently came off the IR after a stint for a broken hand, because he blocks cold hard rubber for a living.

Ben Lovejoy ’06: Anaheim Ducks: The Lovejoy family. Everyone knows the Lovejoy family. Most of us have lost count as to how many of the Lovejoys have played for Dartmouth. Nick is the current edition of the Lovejoy saga playing for Dartmouth. Ben, meanwhile, has been thriving in the NHL. After a trade from one of the best teams in the Pittsburgh Penguins, Lovejoy has lost no steam. His Ducks currently claim the NHL’s best record. Lovejoy’s defensive capabilities have excelled in Anaheim. He has 12 points in 46 games played this season. Most notably, he has posted a plus/ minus of 19 while on the ice.

Lee Stempniak ’05: Calgary Flames: Last but not least, is Lee Stempniak. Stempniak is second all-time on the Dartmouth NHL Points leaders list with 322 points accrued over 604 professional games. The 11th year pro is the all-time leader in NHL games played by a Dartmouth player. He scored 151 points as a Dartmouth player and was named a two-time All American.

In a league as cut throat and as brutally competitive as the NHL, it’s no small accomplishment to claim a high number of the league’s best players. In a league where new young guys flood into training camps annually to try to take your spot, hanging your hat on a 5-10 year career in the NHL is incredible.

The Dartmouth hockey tradition runs strong. The team has consistently continued to produce quality talent that has caught on in the professional ranks. Even as the team struggles now, it’s still enticing to go to Thompson Arena because the talent is there. You never know which guy could be the next man winging an NHL line. n

The Patron Saint of Industrialism

I think once you make that case, it’s pretty clear that the environmentalist approach is fundamentally flawed and should be jettisoned.

With all of the attention being paid to the divestment movement and sustainability initiatives as of late, it is little wonder why Alex Epstein has been so busy. As a leading proponent of industrialism and the founder of the for-profit think-tank, the Center for Industrial Progress, he has made a name for himself as the intellectual counter-weight to the likes of Bill McKibben and the rest of the environmentalist movement.

An Interview with Alex Epstein that we need to sure up the holes, the anti-capitalists were able to pretend that they were actually the champions of our environment. That is completely unjustified. If you look at the socialist countries, they have the worst environments. If you look at the third world countries that won’t adopt capitalism, they have the worst environments.

But [the Left] was able to successfully take people’s legitimate concerns with this issue and use it to oppose capitalism. If you look at the constant of the Left, it has always found a way to oppose capitalism and therefore freedom, and there’s this kaleidoscope of justifications, but the object of hatred never shifts and is never really questioned. That’s the sign of a religious dogma.

TDR: It seems when you talk to environmentalists and divestment advocates on campus their fervor overwhelms a lot of the facts. How do you as a humanist combat that and what do you recommend that people on the ground at college campuses do to assist in those efforts?

of the issues have this unbelievable smugness [and believe] that they represent the height of scientific thinking because these political paeans have been passed to them under the name of science. In the same way, another conclusion might be given the endorsement of the Pope or Mohammad or an equivalent authority. It’s a disturbing trend where they have coopted values and they’ve coopted science. I experience this a lot because I speak on a lot of college campuses. I’ve spoken at the best ones and they are some of worst in terms of this combination of profound ignorance, militant pseudo-certainty, and condescension. That’s not true of all students – in fact I’ve found many students are open to what I have to say and I do my best to explain myself and come across as reasonable – but it’s remarkable to me the combination of ignorance and… arrogance. When you have that and when it’s connected to values, the person becomes blind.

They don’t even know there is such a thing as seeing, and they think everyone else is blind. It’s not a good

situation. The positive is that I think one can make a lot of headway by just educating people and by generally pointing out that maybe before taking a position on this, [it would be a good idea to] actually understand what the Greenhouse effect is, or maybe before being antinuclear power, you should understand what radiation is, how it works, and when it’s dangerous. People who are more intellectually honest will admit when they are voicing an opinion that they don’t really have a basis for and they’ll be interested in an honest presentation that respects them and doesn’t ask them to take anything on faith. At [the Center for Industrial Progress] and in my own work, that’s what I’m always trying to do. Just give people the full context that has caused us to come to these conclusions. In my experience, that’s the best way to get other people to come to the conclusions.

ND: Thank you very much for your time and insight! n

AE: There are really two aspects to fervor. One is a legitimate element [and] one is completely illegitimate. The first is that the environmentalist side has done a much better job of connecting their ideas to people’s values, whereas the pro-fossil fuel side hasn’t done a very good job of connecting what they stand for to human life. In that respect, I think the Center for Industrial Progress is a leader in showing people the incredibly positive connection between industry, including the energy industry, life, and the environment. The second aspect of the fervor you mentioned is the dogma or the faith of it. That is scary, because it comes from a combination of utter ignorance about energy… the environment, and propaganda. The worst part of the propaganda is not the particular tenets of the propaganda or the idea that we’re creating a giant blanket of CO2 and turning the world into a furnace; [it is instead] the propaganda coupled with the idea that mouthing [it] and accepting it unthinkingly is the height of intellectual virtue. Thus, you get this bizarre spectacle of people that can’t even explain to you what the Greenhouse effect is. They don’t know anything about the history of weather and the fact that man’s climate has become much safer as we’ve used more energy. People who don’t even have the most rudimentary understanding

I Came, I Saw Saw, Iraq

By Paul F. Danyow On January 20th, 2009, Barack H. Obama was officially sworn into office as the 44th President of the United States of America. One of the most popular policies President Obama campaigned on, and one that contributed significantly to his victory over Republican presidential nominee Senator John S. McCain, was a promise to end the hugely unpopular War in Iraq and bring the American troops home. Based on this promise and the many others that Mr. Obama made on the campaign trail, many Americans viewed his inauguration day as a moment of great optimism and hope. Unfortunately, for the long-suffering citizens of Iraq, that January day has proved to be the beginning of the end for the brief period of stability they experienced in the closing days and immediate aftermath of the war.

The war in question had begun almost six years earlier, when on March 20th, 2003, President George W. Bush had ordered a massive ground invasion of the Middle Eastern nation. The invading force was principally American but also contained significant elements from other NATO countries, especially the United Kingdom. Launched without a declaration of war, the initial invasion was wildly successful. The invading forces quickly destroyed President Saddam Hussein’s army and removed his regime from power, concluding major combat operations at the close of April.

Problems began to occur almost immediately after the initial invasion had been completed, as guerilla-style sectarian violence became more and more widespread throughout the country. Consisting of suicide bombings, roadside bombs, and all manners of militia attacks, this violence was due to tensions between the minority Sunni and majority Shiite Muslim groups, as well as the intervention of external groups like the al-Qaeda terrorist organization.

In November and December of 2004, a coalition force of U.S. Marines and British and free Iraqi troops tangled with a horde of insurgent fighters in the Second Battle of Fallujah, one of the biggest engagements of the insurgency. Although the American-led forces were triumphant in the battle, Fallujah was symptomatic of the outbreaks of violence that were plaguing the new Iraqi nation and which continued to do so for the next few years. As the sectarian violence continued to increase, the American forces began the process of setting up a democratic Iraqi government while continuing to train a new Iraqi army, hoping to eventually create a unified Iraq capable of electing its own government and defending itself.

At the same time that Iraq was suffering from the ongoing insurgency, the American public was losing its patience with President Bush’s managing of the Iraq War, as well as with the war itself. Part of the reason for this is that the rationale for invasion became unclear; one of the original stated goals of the 2003 invasion was to capture and destroy any biological, chemical, or nuclear weapons of mass destruction possessed

by Saddam Hussein’s regime. Top U.S. military commanders disapproved of the Bush administration’s handling of the war. A protest by eight generals and admirals led Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld to resign in November 2006.

President Bush appointed former CIA director Robert Gates to replace him.

In early 2007, Bush and Gates implemented the “troop surge” policy, and decided to deploy twenty thousand additional American troops to Iraq in the hopes of improving security and bringing a greater measure of stability to the country. Even though the move was widely opposed by Democrats, including Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, the surge was a tremendous success. While the sectarian violence did continue throughout the next few years, it became dramatically less frequent. As we know, however, Barack Obama won the 2008 presidential election in part because of his promise to end the Iraq War and bring the troops home. While most of Mr. Obama’s campaign prom-

ises have gone unfulfilled, he delivered on Iraq, gradually withdrawing troops throughout 2009 and 2010. By 2011, only a few troops remained in an advisory role, and even they were pulled out by December.

While Mr. Obama’s withdrawal of the troops was very popular among the American general public, many high-level military commanders urged against this premature termination of the conflict on the grounds that the new Iraqi democracy was too fragile and its army too green to adequately protect the country. In recent weeks, this concern has been vindicated, as al Qaeda militants have launched a full-scale attempt to overthrow the influence of Iraq’s legitimate, Shiitedominated government. Notably, the Iraqi army has been struggling to put down this al-Qaeda led uprising, and the burden of fighting against the militants has fallen as much on loyal tribesmen as it has on the actual Iraqi soldiers.

The ongoing violence in Anbar province proves conclusively that President Obama’s decision to rapidly withdraw from Iraq was ill-advised and premature. Iraq’s government and army are not yet ready to function without American support. Some continue to argue that American forces never should have entered Iraq, but in 2014, further debate over that question is pointless. Once the Bush administration made the decision to invade and overthrow Hussein’s government, the United States owed it to the Iraqi people to help them build a new democratic society; the decision to leave earlier than military commanders recommended is a betrayal of the Iraqis. Additionally, it dishonors the many American and NATO veterans of the war who sacrificed so much for a new, democratic Iraq. Mr. Obama’s decision to withdraw early, against the advice of top commanders and for obvious political gain, is an absolute disgrace to the office he holds. An executive is supposed to be willing to make decisions that are right, regardless of whether or not they are popular; the early withdrawal from Iraq is just one of many examples of Mr. Obama’s failings as a leader. n

All the World’s a Stage

By Stuart A. Allan For those of you who speak English or enjoy stories – be they literature or even film – this year is an auspicious one indeed. Across the globe, the 450th anniversary of the Bard of Avon’s birth is being celebrated with performances, lectures, and documentaries. The Bard, or William Shakespeare, as he is more commonly known today, left a profound mark on the world for centuries after his death. He is taught in almost every high school English class around the globe- a feat many of the great captains of history, who once held entire nations under their sway, would envy. What was it about Shakespeare, a son of a minor merchant from a small market town in central England, that so captivated the English world to this day? Well, Shakespeare was more than just an excellent playwright; he was a philosopher of the heart, a genius of the human condition. In his work, Shakespeare so eloquently surveyed and depicted elements of human nature – both the grotesque and the sublime – that both the highest lord and the lowest peasant would feel they witnessed a profound truth about Man. For such an influential figure, relatively little is known about Shakespeare’s biographical history. This has given rise to a number of rather amusing conspiracy theories. He was born sometime in 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon in Warwickshire, England. During his youth, he was educated at the local grammar school where he likely studied the Latin classics. At the age of 18 he married Anne Hathaway who was 26. Only six months after the wedding Anne gave birth to their first child of three, Susana. After another birth record of the twins Hamnet and Judith in 1585, records of Shakespeare vanish. This gap in the records is hardly surprising considering 16th century England Mr. Allan is a senior at the College and the President of The Dartmouth Review.

was a time when records were sparse, plague was rampant and most of the population was illiterate. Nevertheless, this ‘dark period’ has proven to be great fodder for the many conspiracy theorists. In 1592 records resume with a criticism of a young up and coming playwright in London – Shakespeare.

In London, Shakespeare was a player and playwright of the theater company The Lord Chamberlin’s Men (later called the King’s Men). By 1599, the group was successful enough to build their own theater, the venerated Globe on the South bank of the River Thames. In 1608 they expanded further, purchasing the Blackfriars Indoor Theater near St. Paul’s where they would perform in the winter months. Today, a reproduction of the Globe stands near its original location in London and is still used for performances. One of the great innovations of the Globe Theater was its mixed seating – a floor area in the courtyard held standing room for the commoners while boxes in the surrounding superstructure seated the nobility and wealthier classes.

In the meantime, Shakespeare’s works were growing in reputation and renowned. By 1598 he had acquired significant brand recognition and his name was regularly being used as a selling point by the theater industry. Over the course of his career he produced some 38 plays, 154 sonnets, and two narrative poems. Considering he was still an active performer until at least 1608, this is quite a prolific portfolio for his day. After 1610, Shakespeare only wrote a few plays in collaboration with other writers (likely John Fletcher who succeeded him as playwright for the Company). Finally, the end of the act came; on April 23, 1616 Shakespeare died and was interred at the Holy Trinity Church in Stratford-upon-Avon.

After his death, Shakespeare left an enduring legacy on the world. Even those cretins who don’t like Shakespeare nonetheless still use his legacy on a daily basis – the English language.

When Shakespeare was alive, English was a rather uncommon

and uncivilised tongue – courtiers preferred speaking in French and the commoners could hardly understand each other. Shakespeare’s works helped codify and standardize the language, leaving a legacy of over 1700 new words that are commonly used today. Words like advertising, eyeball, jaded and unreal all owe their origin to Shakespeare. Naturally, in the first English Dictionary written by Samuel Johnson in 1755, Shakespeare was the most commonly cited source for words and phrases.

But his legacy didn’t simply end at giving us the means to effectively communicate; he fruitfully employed his command of the English language and his descriptive prowess to bring together both commoner and lord to explore our common humanity.

Powerful narratives like The Merchant of Venice explored racism and revenge while others, such as Romeo and Juliet, dove into the depths of the human heart. His stories were so effective at exploring the human element of life that they are repeated and reused throughout English and European literature. Even modern films like The Lion King (Hamlet), 10 Thing I Hate About You (Taming of the Shrew), and West Side Story (Romeo and Juliette) have their origins in Shakespeare’s work.

Shakespeare’s varied works from his sonnets to his histories to his comedies contain so much depth that entire books have been written analyzing small segments. Each person connects with different parts of his work, thus, instead of trying to discuss their relative value or potential meanings in this short article, I thought it would be more prudent to briefly discuss my personal favourite-Coriolanus.

This tragedy is one of Shakespeare’s lesser known works although, arguably, one of his best (T.S. Eliot concurs). This play retells the classic story of Gaius Marius Coriolanus – an early Roman general discussed in Plutarch’s Lives. Coriolanus is a successful general, a hero who singlehandedly saves Rome from destruction numerous times, and a truly noble man who loves his country and its people. He does however, have a few serious character flaws – his pride, his lack of empathy, and his total misunderstanding of public relations. Coriolanus’ heroics earn him the envy of lesser men – corrupt politicians scarred of his power and incorruptibility – who subsequently seek to destroy him. The politicians take advantage of his pride and terrible PR skills to make him seem like a monster to the plebs who exile their former saviour from Rome. The story gets better when Coriolanus returns to Rome at the head of an army shortly thereafter but that is beside the point.

You’ll have to read or watch the play if you want to know more.

What I connect with most in this story is the importance of public relations – that right does not make might. Through Shakespeare’s play, I was able to truly learn a lesson that many others have tried to teach me but have failed – that perceptions matter just as much if not more than right action and nobleness of spirit.

I think that it is quite unfortunate that many younger people today, even in some of our nation’s most venerable educational institutions, are not familiar with Shakespeare. Sure, most have read a few plays (or at least the Spark Notes) in their middle school/ high school English class, but few have taken the time to actually understand and study his works. Hopefully, as Shakespeare gets more play for his 450th, those who didn’t understand his works in secondary school may reconnect with the Old Bard and his tales now that they are more mature. In fact, I met with a Dartmouth Student who is helping people to do just that. Ms. Elizabeth Rogers, a Dartmouth College ’16, is the company manger of the Dartmouth Rude Mechanicals, an entirely student run theater company which preforms Shakespearean plays on campus. The group was founded around 2010 by ‘11s and ‘12s and has been going strong ever since. The company performs one play a term, in Fall 2013 they performed a highly acclaimed rendition of The Winter’s Tale in the Bentley Theater. This Winter Carnival they are preforming one of Shakespeare’s great tragicomedies – All’s Well that Ends Well. Student companies like The Dartmouth Rude Mechanicals give more mature college students a chance to see Shakespeare preformed rather than simply read. Perhaps this re-exposure to Shakespeare after they have gotten more life experience under their belts may ignite their interest, curiosity, and intellect.

This year, I would recommend everyone from the Shakespearean actors to those who have never taken an English class take an hour or two to remember the great Bard of Avon and his contributions to mankind and the Western world. Go to a lecture and learn about his legacy – many are being held in small towns like Hanover, NH and big cities like New York. Pick up a book of his sonnets – I’m sure your local library has them. Watch one of his plays – The Dartmouth Rude Mechanicals are putting a rather good one on for you this Winter Carnival here in Hanover.

Watch a film version – they can be quite good (Branagh’s 1996 Hamlet and Ralph Fiennes’ 2011 Coriolanus come to mind). If you take just a moment to reconnect with Shakespeare this year, I guarantee you will learn something new about human nature, you will likely enjoy yourself, and you may just learn something about yourself. n

Spotlight: Five Arts Organizations You May (or May Not) Know About

First you’ll notice the swagger, then the Dri-Fit, the sewed “D’s” everywhere, and probably a pair of headphones. While you could use stereotypes to spot the artists too, they are usually trickier to find and are certainly smaller targets physically. We don’t mean to suggest The College is lacking in the arts or culture. Studios, practice rooms, auditoriums, garages, and garretts are spread across the campus like gems. The Hood Museum can stand as a proud home to some of our nation’s finest collections, and The Hopkins Center for the Creative and Performing Arts triggered a nationwide trend by virtue of its architectural brilliance and wide range of resources. One of the goals of this newspaper is to encourage student participation in and appreciation of arts and culture. So, we looked all over campus in search of artists and studied the various areas they manned. Here’s what resulted.

The Rude Mechanicals The Rude Mechanicals are a campus group of Thespians — that performs solely Shakespeare — who strive to produce plays as Great Bard would have them performed. The troupe strives to make Shakespeare contemporary and relevant to modern audiences, operating under the historical fact that Shakespeare intended his shows for the masses rather than a literary minority.

By performing in contemporary dress, they give their audiences a familiar sight. Although

they maintain Shakespearean dialect replete with all its beautifully complex turns of phrase and sometimes rigid meter, they enjoy large audiences.

Like any roving band of actors, The Rude Mechanicals observe their own strict set of traditions and habits. Hoping to keep an open, community-oriented philosophy, the group purposely shuns formal titles.

The troupe is entirely student run. An artistic director, who is appointed from show to show by vote, has the final say in all disputes over all things production-related. The group sports props and costumes, but is somewhat lacking in the way of sets. Dialogue and acting are the two most artistically important features of any Rude Mechanicals performance.

“The best part about the group is it is student run,” Naomi Lazar ‘17 said. “It’s collaborative, and you can voice your own opinion during rehearsal.”

Financially speaking, the group is selffunded by donations vis a vis a collections jar.

The Rude Mechanicals do not sell tickets, and donations are thereby their only source of revenue. The group has recently tested the capacity of theaters on campus: at this fall’s production of A Winter ’s Tale at Bentley Theater, audience members packed in supplementary foldable chairs.

“After A Winter ’s Tale we [the actors and actresses] were just offstage hugging each other,” Lazar said. “There’s such a strong feeling of accomplishment when everything’s done.”

Over Winter Carnival weekend, The Rude Mechanicals will be performing All’s Well that Ends Well. The cast for the show is selected by intra-group auditioning, involving each member submitting to a peer review. This auditioning

process is part of the community ethos The Rude Mechanicals strive to maintain. Leadership positions in the group are not restricted to an elite core of upperclassmen; in fact, many of the leadership roles go to freshmen. At the end of the day, The Rude Mechanicals are one of the most open theater groups on campus.

Raaz and Vandana: Two Nuanced Takes on South Asian Dance at Dartmouth Raaz

O n e o f D a r t m o u t h ’s m o r e e t h n i c a n d c u l tural performance groups is Raaz. Raaz is a South Asian style dance group here on campus whose niche is a fusion of popular Bollywood and Bhangra dance styles.

It is a competitive college team that often performs at dance shows and competitions that are hosted by other colleges and universities in the greater New England/Mid-Atlantic area.

Those who attended the cultural program h o s t e d b y t h e H i n d u s t u d e n t s o rg a n i z a t i o n , S h a n t i , a s p a r t o f S h a n t i ’s g r e a t e r D i w a l i p r o g r a m m a y v e r y w e l l r e m e m b e r R a a z ’s s t e l l a r performance, combining traditional and more contemporary Indian dance styles while donning beautiful and colorful Indian saris.

Aspiring Raaz dancers must try out, and many have some background in previous dance instruction. They practice once a week.

Nevertheless, Raaz took part in a college show at Harvard last term and at Smith College and Hampshire College last spring. They plan to take part in another show this term at C o l u m b i a U n i v e r s i t y i n N e w Yo r k .

G i v e n t h e R a a z ’s r o u t i n e p r a c t i c e s a n d n u merous shows, the team has certainly solidified a s a c l o s e - k n i t s o c i a l g r o u p a s w e l l . “ I t ’s a super nice, super supportive group,” comments R a a z m e m b e r A n i t a K o d a l i ’ 1 7 , “ i t ’s [ b – e e n ] a nice way to get to know a group of people I otherwise wouldn’t have gotten to know.” When asked about a specific low to Raaz – perhaps regarding tiresome practices and shows – Kod a l i s i m p l y r e p l i e d , “ I j u s t d o n ’t r e a l l y s e e a l o w. ” Raaz frequently performs with another dance group at The College. Sheba, one of the campuses most popular co-ed hip-hop dance groups, often features Raaz dances in the midst o f t h e i r p e r f o r m a n c e s . A t S h e b a ’s f a l l H u n g e r Games themed dance, the ladies and gentlemen of Raaz performed a few numbers.

Vandana Vandana is another one of Dartmouth’s many ethnic and cultural performance groups. Vandana is known for its fusion of classical and modern styles of both Indian and non-Indian dances, ranging from Bhangra and Bharatnatyam to hip-hop and Bollywood.

Most of the group’s performances are on campus at venues such as various cultural shows or at fraternities/sororities.

Vandana practices once a week, and it is open to everyone and anyone with any level of interest or skill in any dance style.

The group does its own choreography. Julia Kannam ’15 commented regarding Vandana’s openness to all skill levels about how she had “never done anything like this” before coming to Dartmouth.

Moreover, Kannam found Vandana to be a “cool way to personally connect with part of my [South Asian] culture.”

Katherine Kannam ‘17 found Vandana to be a solid social bonding experience for her in between the group’s weekly practices and routine shows.

Regarding how close knit the group is, she comments “I’ve gotten close with a lot of people, especially upperclassmen.”

The Dartmouth Symphony Orchestra

At Dartmouth you don’t have to travel far to hear high quality music. Whether it’s a capella or freestyle rap, students are well aware of this fact.

One group that is easy to overlook however, is the Dartmouth Symphony Orchestra. Though the group may seem standard, it is unique in the level of dedication required of its members. With two-hour evening rehearsals Mondays and Thursdays as well as occasional sectional meetings on Sundays, the group is well trained. Rehearsals prior to a performance are even more grueling; the week before a concert, the group holds three-hour practices Monday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

The group began informally and often hired professionals to fill their ranks for concerts. The group is now filled with freshmen, and members are excited about the talent and depth of the group, which will contribute to the legacy of excellence the group now sustains.

“The Rehearsals are long but extremely necessary to form a cohesive, functioning orchestra,” Sam Libby ’17 said. “Rehearsals provide a great time to distract the mind from schoolwork and to focus on making music.”

Libby first signed up with the Dartmouth Symphony Orchestra during Dimensions. The auditions process, aligned with the culture of excellence at the

group, is designed to select the best of talent from incoming freshman classes. Past the initiation process, the challenges keep coming. Conductor Anthony Princiottii chooses highly difficult pieces to keep the skill of the orchestra at the highest possible level.

With the challenging nature of the pieces comes the internal reward of mastery.

“Nonetheless, the work pays off during the concert,” Libby said. “And nothing can quite match the feeling of playing the last note of a hard piece and listening to the sound resonate through the auditorium.”

Indeed, the Dartmouth Symphony Orchestra is a professional quality ensemble and students interested in the classical canon can spare a trip to the symphony halls of Boston or New York City without sacrificing a noticeable level of quality. Some students in the ensemble, however, feel the Dartmouth student body could be more aware of the music organizations on campus. Though professors and citizens of Hanover fill the Hopkins Performing Arts Center every time the Dartmouth Symphony Orchestra plays, the crowd is relatively devoid of young faces.

“I think the Dartmouth community should be more aware,” Libby suggested, “of the Hop ensembles in general.”

Regarding long-term goals, the group hopes to

utilize its talent base by adding more concerts to the dockets and maintaining the superb nature of their recital pieces.

“Student attendance at DSO rehearsals is near perfect,” Libby said. “The level of commitment is very high, arguably comparable to a varsity sport, and these challenging pieces require both devotion during rehearsal and individual practice in order to even play the part.”

The Winter Term Concert will be on March 1st at 8pm in Spaulding Auditorium. Tickets are available for purchase online or at the Hop Box Office. The group is currently working on Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite, Mussorgsky/Ravel’s Pictures at an Exposition, and Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto as part of this concert’s Russian theme.

Albert Chen, a freshman on the Dartmouth Sympohny Orchestra, claims that the group is the most rewarding experience for him at Dartmouth.

“I love music and have been in orchestras since middle and high school,” Chen said. “The D.S.O. is the best orchestra I’ve gotten the opportunity to play with." n Mr. Woram is a freshman at the College and the Arts and Culture Editor at The Dartmouth Review. Nutters Gin and Julep 6 oz Gin 5 oz Bourbon 2 oz tonic 4 generous pinches of quinine powder 15 crushed mint leaves July 7th, 1880 Roger, it is with great celerity and insufferable fear that I write this message, for I fear it may be my last. While scything (well, not literally — my machete-wielding Pigmy guide Okonkwo was rather more involved with the brutish task) my way through some brush along the Gambian river, I made both an unfortunate acquaintance and epiphany. Okonwko had been rambling on at ghastly length about some rival tribal hoo-nilly and at times I had to overcome a rather staggering urge to remove my broach and fling it at him.

“Okonwko” I cried, “If you insist upon blathering like a Derbyshire hen, then I will have no choice but to set down my two beverages and strike you!”

I am normally not a man of such violent intemperance, Roger, but the heat assaulted my temper in volleys and the sweat was quite literally forming alluvial bunches in my moustache. As Shakespeare said, “nothing comes of a voyage undisturb’d,” or something arather, and savages soon surrounded us. Naturally I was not prepared to abandon my two libations, so rather than draw my sword and consequently lose any hope of sating my large appetite for drink, I decided to flee.

“Okonwko! Run my boy,” I cried, “We are beset by wicked onanists and Mau-Maus!

I shall have to contact Governor Plumsbury at once with a request for reinforcments and replenishing of our beverages!”

Okonkwo, however, was already being dragged away, no doubt to some ghastly death.

In my flight, a stray arrow caught my belt and my trousers fell to my ankles. Again, Roger, I was not ready to divest myself of liquid courage, so I proceeded rather indecently with the bunched khaki rubbing my bare ankles rather raw. In my fright I began soiling myself as I waded into the river. To avoid a deathly looking creature I spilled some of my gin into my julep. As I pondered the sheer madness of the situation, I took a sip of the new concoction — I always have possessed a scientific mind — and was delighted by the mix. I hope that you and Walter back in Khartoum may extract the same sublime pleasure I did whilst soiling myself under tribal assault in the Congo from this beverage.
