The studio focused on understanding of ‘ TYPOLOGY ’ in architecture. Typology is the study of ‘ TYPES ’. A type is the diagram of how the various constituent elements of the building come together. Building types have evolved over years and have consolidated through codes embedded in the needs of climate, culture, geography but also aspirations to beauty etc. The site is located in CHARKOP , KANDIVALI , MUMBAI. The study started with looking and understanding the context of charkop , various spatial configurations of each sectors, different types of societies and homes and relationship of open spaces with built spaces. A Sector is a large area comprised of several Clusters . Each cluster is made up of several Societies . A society is made up 35 Houses . Each society has a central courtyard around which the houses are placed. Map of CHARKOP , the black marked parts are the 3 societies we studied.

As Layers Of Skin Making Homes , Charkop , Mumbai
Fourth Semester
The Idea of Home as Layers of Skin The drawing narrates the unfolding of house, its various components - the walls, tiles, windows, slab, roof. A House is a concrete block consisting of these multiple skins which come together and make a house.

Cut And Fold The iterations started with cutting and folding different planes and then joining them to see what spaces they make, the mass and the voids they create. The planes are placed vertically next to each other and the folds formed by cutting becomes different skins.

PRODUCEDBYANAUTODESKSTUDENTVERSION
The drawing shows the cuts and folds being transformed into skins. The staggering allows to create different levels and allows the possibilty of more interactions and also different private, semi - private spaces.

Fourth Semester
The site chosen for this intervention is around one of the informal settlements called Eksar Dongripada, Borivali West located in Northern suburbs in the city of Mumbai. The design was based on looking at various factors such as, climate of mumbai, wetness and its management, water cycles, terrain and hence the materials to be used in such situation.
5-6 : The aspect of incrementality explored through repeating a single unit and subsequently adding members to make it stable.
02 Shells. New - Modularity , Eksar Dongripada , Mumbai
The studio explores the community food facility and an ancillary multipurpose event space (festivals, community centre, disaster relief, healthcare camps and so on) where the question of modularity is central and operative.
1-4 : Material and form explorations which is more stable, has good strength, less costly and temporal.
1 2 3 4 5 6
The studio addresses the question of ‘ MODULARITY ’ in architecture. Modularity nowadays is seen in technological context where the components of the buildings are made in multiples, but the challenge is to look it in a different way, where it could be used in various contexts, be temporal, and has the possibilty to expand anywhere , anytime. The objective is to look at the possible emergence of architectural forms that could be done through the use of modularity that are more than the sum of all parts.

JOINERY DETAILS A single joinery used to make different furnitures

The design tries to generate a built form type to negotiate the sloping terrain to intervene the site with a fixed program of wetland conservatory which includes three wings - research wing - hydrological and biodiversity research zones supported by testing wing with hydrology lab, biodiversity lab and chemical laboratory; education and outreach wing which includes outdoor wetlands observatory, education and training unit, gathering space to host awarness events, seminars and discussions. 1- End wall section of the design, showing materiality and construction details 1
Wetland Conservatory , Sewri , Mumbai Sixth Semester
The studio introduced natural processes and systems , their flows, cycles and interdependencies. The environment as we experience it is a set of interconnected networks which balance each other to maintain the rhythmic flows. The current building practices have resulted in new spatial priorities which largely ignore their consequences on the environment.
03 New. Geographies
The objective was to develop methods to generate programs based on ecology, terrain, biodiversity, flows; to design a dynamic relationship of landscape and the built environment by creating builtform that ehnaces coexistence of biodiversity and remediates the conflicts.

1-4 : Conceptual ideas of merging the builtform with the contours of the site, the roof becomes the extended ground and it seems to be an endless ground.

5 : The plan of the observatory , where the construction is done by cut and fill method, shows the research zones and the accessible green roofs and the ramps wrapping aroud the trees connecting each floor and roof.

1-4 : Understanding the spaces and the contours of the site
5-7 : The views from the renders shows how the builtform sits on the site and gets merged with surrounding. The undulations on the roof makes one feel walking on the ground which is not a flat concrete thing but a series of ups and downs. The skylights allow the play of light.

04 Architecture. OF Crossovers Artist Residency, Powai , Mumbai Fifth Semester
The project is to design Artists residency addressing the concerns of resource consumption and management within the built form along with the spatial logistics in the urban context of Mumbai.
2 : Section showing the residency and different performance spaces for the artists 1
The studio focuses on discussing environment that is made of constant negotiations between humans and natural flows like air, wind, water, light that crafts the architecture of comfort for any given place. Flows which are not linear but cyclical and that harvests, consumes and manages its resources demands to alter the nature of dependencies and call for new habitation practices and spatial configurations.
The studio was based on understanding and questioning Urban Environment and Architecture .
1 : Showing different activities that takes place in and around the site
2

Taking in consideration of the flows and edge conditions , grids are placed on the site which are parallel to the road which allows the programs to be placed accordingly.

The Settlement study focused on understanding the relationship between Natural Factors ( terrain characteristics, climate factors and flaura / fauna characteristics ) and Practices. It also focus on the transformations and shifts in natural factors and connected practices through time. The floating masses of Loktak Lake reside in the northern part of Moirang, a small town near Imphal city. One of such floating masses called as Phumdi is located on the South Western side of the Lake and is almost 2.6kms from the Sendra park port and it takes 30 minutes by boat to reach the biomass/phumdi. The Biomass is constantly moving and shifting because of wind and water pressure and hence there is a constant sense of movement that one feels when on the phumdi. The movement felt is of the wobbly type during the storm whereas during the calm waves there is a constant sideways shift. The biomass is essentially made up of the napi grass and the phum entangled together over the years to form a thick layer of land. The phumdis have different depths and the level of water also varies. Some places where stepped water arises above phumdis and at some places the water doesn’t come up, but approximately its 2-3 feet in depth.

06 Mass. Inhabitation Rethinking Redevelopments of Co-op Societies
Thisredevelopment.proposalis
a complete redevelopment model where apart from rehabilitation, the redevelopment would generate tenements for sale & rent to cover the redevelopment costs. Its feasibility was established through an iterative set of calculations. A week-long site study and conversations with its residents shaped the concerns for the design. The intent was to take the ground up beacause the higher we go, the connection with the ground is less. So to increase the interactions and maintain a constant relation with the ground, the corridors not being linear simple ones started to modulate and created grounds within themselves. The houses were also arranged in such a manner such that it creates small open spaces for its users which when combined with many houses becomes a common gathering space where people could carry out many activities. Section showing the staggering in the builtform to create open spaces, the corridors becoming extended home and allowing many activities and interactions to take place.
The studio also undertook in-depth research and understanding of the city, its demographics; the current trends and projected future scenarios; and current mass housing stocks and redevelopment schemes. Among the various tendencies under urban renewal, one is a tendency to promote self-redevelopment of mass housing stock. The studio aimed at rethinking these tendencies of urban renewal and develop newer models of redevelopment ranging from complete retrofit to complete
The studio questioned the current redevopments that are being taking place as we can see alot of skyscrappers which has no sense of life in it, do we really need this kind of redevelopments? For whom are these skycrappers for? For whom is the City?

Sixth Semester
The studio focuses on three things - first to develop an ability in systems thinking ( for example; building as a system of grid, etc..); second to develop ability for detailing ; and third , to develop a deep understanding of construction of buildings.
The studio helped to look at the design very carefully, to look at every single detail of it, joineries , construction, materials, safety rules and regulations, fire safety measures, water management, foundation, how the structure is made from foundation to the roof. : Elevation of the designed Museum : Section showing staircase, lift, chajja, foundation details.

Itineraries. Of Thoughts InsideOut
The studio is about journeys and itineraries. Journeys here are explorations of territories and minds; they began with curiosities. These curiosities shape the itineraries. These itineraries have capabilities to transport people through space to explore what is unknown and what lies beyond. The drawing narrtes my itinerary of things that I think of; the outside world which I want to live with the things present in my house. “His journey started as a new day of exploration, to see different kinds of people, to find the reason for sadness. He, too, headed towards the college, feeling excited while travelling as he saw different people coming together while going to work, enjoying chit-chatting and sharing things as if they are a family. This place made him happy since he could see what family really is. He reached college with a lot of thoughts in his mind at the same time, not forgetting his family that haunts him every single day. He usually keeps himself engaged in the college by doing the assignments, and after college by wandering on streets, looking at the people around and observing them. He keeps himself busy in the chaos of the road, art in the traffic, calmness in the seashore, music in the vegetable market and later he goes home and starts working which keeps himself busy and allows him to ignore the things going on in the house”. 09 Useful.
The studio aimed at looking at ourselves and identifying our habits, and hence making useful things from unuseful objects which is followed by our habit.
I have a habit of rotating pen, solving Rubik’s cube. There is a constant movement that my hand does. So, the idea came from there; of making something which is endless and allows hand Insteadmovements.ofarriving at a solution, the habit of flipping, rotating, and moving things like Rubik’s cube allowed for exploration of the continuous process.

10 Activities. And Interests
All of a sudden an idea struck Vicky’s mind that he planned to execute the very next day. He wanted to repeat the mischievous act he had just performed, but now at a larger scale. He was dreaming of a wobbly world - where everyone is walking unsteadily with their head
Vicky had a mild headache, a possible unknown bruise, a sore body, a general feeling of fatigue when he woke up the next morning. He was restless. Constant thoughts about his plan were running in his head and he wanted to execute it desperately. He needed that thrill, it would make him feel good”.( An excerpt from The GUT Stories )
“Whyspinning.don’t
Vicky had a wicked smirk on his face while thinking of his dreamy world where all heads are spinning. He introduced his plan to his gang, and they all cheered loudly at this plan. They were so loud, they woke the villagers from their sleep. A police van that passed their adda ,started chasing Vicky and his gang, but they all managed to hide in the corners of the street, without being caught.
I mix the alcoholic drinks with other substances, very discreetly, in the dark.”
