DISPOSESSION THE GREAT SOCIAL HOUSING SWINDLE FILM, DIRECTOR Q&A AND PANEL DISCUSSION Wed 6 Dec, 7.30pm

MS AT THE CURZON DEBATE, DISCUSSION AND EXPERT OPINION Belonging: The Truth Behind the Headlines is an investigative documentary film about where power lies in the UK. Power: who has it, and what do they do with it is as relevant today as it ever was. Looking at events around three industrial disputes, three governments and over three decades, Belonging shows the impact of government and corporate power on democracy and human rights in the UK. “A Terrific Film” Ken Loach Demain is not just a film, it is the beginning of a movement seeking to encourage local communities around the world to change the way they live for the sake of our planet. Showing solutions, telling a feel-good story... this may be the best way to solve the ecological, economical and social crises that the world is going through. Cyril Dion and Mélanie Laurent and their team meet the pioneers who are re-inventing agriculture, energy, economy, democracy and education, the people taking positive actions which are already working. Dispossession: The Great Social Housing Swindle explores the catastrophic failures that have led to a chronic shortage of social housing in Britain. For some a housing crisis means not getting planning permission for a loft conversion. For others it means losing their home. Failures include government policy that prevents local councils and housing associations from building homes for the 1.4 million on waiting lists, and local authorities who neglect council estates, forcing people to relocate to other parts of the country, far from families and support networks.

THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS (18)

NORTH BY NORTHWEST (PG)

DIR. JONATHAN DEMME I 1991 I US

DIR. ALFRED HITCHCOCK I 1959 I US

The award-winning chiller thriller, starring Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins, returns to cinemas in a new 4K transfer.

One of the most entertaining films of Alfred Hitchcock’s career, this glamorous romantic thriller stars Bristol-born Cary Grant as New York advertising man Roger O Thornhill, who falls victim to a deadly case of mistaken identity.

FBI agent Clarice Starling, a specialist in serial killers, is fresh out of training and on the hunt for psychopathic murderer Buffalo Bill before his female body count rises. She adopts a high-risk strategy in visiting the imprisoned, dangerous and highly intelligent psychiatrist Dr. Hannibal Lecter for his insight, but Lecter wants something in return from her that goes far beyond the acceptable.

To clear his name and stay alive, he leaves town. En route protection from his pursuers is provided by the intriguingly named Eve (Eva Marie Saint). Witty, impudent and suspenseful, this is Hollywood filmmaking at its most urbane and glamorous.

Nudity and The Periodic Table, these things hold the key to the future. How much do you wear? What do you look like, and will they let you in? Oh, and don’t you dare wear more than dental floss on a French beach”.

Bringing the best in comedy to the Curzon, Jongleurs On The Road returns with another fantastic line-up, featuring Laura Lexx, Otiz Canelloni and Josh Howie.

Young Clara creeps downstairs on Christmas Eve to play with her favourite present – a Nutcracker doll. But the mysterious magician Drosselmeyer is waiting to sweep her off on a magical adventure.

The corruption of innocence is at the heart of Verdi’s potent tragedy in David McVicar’s production for The Royal Opera. Rigoletto, court jester to the libertine Duke of Mantua, is cursed by the father of one of the Duke’s victims for his irreverent laughter. When the Duke seduces Rigoletto’s daughter Gilda, it seems the curse is taking effect…

After defeating the Mouse King, the Nutcracker and Clara travel through the Land of Snow to the Kingdom of Sweets, where the Sugar Plum Fairy treats them to a wonderful display of dances. Back home, Clara thinks she must have been dreaming – but doesn’t she recognise Drosselmeyer’s nephew? Peter Wright’s production for The Royal Ballet ranks as one of the most enduring and enchanting versions of The Nutcracker. With its festive period setting, dancing snowflakes and enchanting stage magic, Ivanov’s 1892 ballet is perfect Christmas entertainment, and Tchaikovsky’s sumptuous, sugarspun music the most recognisable of all ballet scores.

David McVicar’s production highlights the cruelty at the heart of the court of Mantua. Richly dressed courtiers engage in orgies and revelries to Verdi’s heady, spirited dances. The opera’s many musical highlights include the ebullient ‘La donna è mobile’, in which the Duke boasts of his disregard for women; Gilda’s exquisite, plangent duets with Rigoletto and the Duke and the gorgeous Act III quartet that beautifully weaves the voices together as the story quickens to its shattering conclusion.

Tue 23 Jan 6.30pm £12/10 From the National Portrait Gallery London, Musée d’Orsay Paris and the National Gallery of Art Washington DC, the Curzon is thrilled to present one of the most talked about exhibitions of the year. Dedicated to the portrait work of Paul Cézanne, the exhibition opens in Paris before traveling to London and Washington. Featuring interviews with curators and experts, and correspondence from the artist himself, the film takes audiences beyond the exhibition to the places Cézanne lived and worked and sheds light on an artist who is perhaps the least known of all the impressionists – until now.
