Behind The Wheel With THE KING (Arthur Prayther)

TOYOTA YARIS 5-DOOR HATCH Dallas, Texas-The world of compact sedans have certainly taken a turn for the better. One such vehicle is the New 2013 Toyota Yaris five-door SE liaftback. To begin with the vehicle wider stance makes handling a lot better than normal. A peppy little 1.five liter DOHC four cylinder engine with VVT-I and mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. This baby cranks out 106 horse power and manages to get 36 miles per gallon on the highway and 30 miles per gallon in the city. Anytime you go on a trip the first thing comes to mind

is the comfort level because of long time sitting in one place. We are happy to report we had no ill feeling after the trip and the seating arrangements and the overall interior was extremely comfortable. Let us keep in mind we are talking about a vehicle that maxed out at just over $18,000. Our test vehicle came in a Black Sand Pearl and good looks! It even got a couple of second looks while making our trip. On the subject of overall ride the sport tuned independent

McPherson strut front suspension with stabilizer bar and torsion beam rear suspension added wonders to the ride feel. Sport tuned electric power steering was another strong point of the vehicle handling capabilities. Power assisted front disc and rear disc brakes brings the new Yaris to a smooth and yet firm stop. Rolling on 16-inch alloy wheels wrapped by P195/50R16 tires produced great road feel. Yaris is ranked with an overall four-star rating from the NHTSA with 5-star rating for driver and a 4-star rating for front passenger in frontal crashes. An excellent four-star rating for front and rear passengers in side crashes and a good four-star rating in rollovers adds to the safety of the vehicle. Star safety system includes VSC, TRAC, and antilock brake system, EBD, along with brake assist and smart stop

technology. A total of 9 air bags with front and rear side curtains, along with whiplash lessening front seats and driver knee airbags help make the Yaris one of the safest compact worldwide. Inside the driver is greeted by a leather tilt steering wheel with audio controls. THE A-NOTE with Aaron Watson Make no mistake, you are the CEO and number one decision maker. But you do have stockholders! These are people who want you to succeed. Your supporters can easily be equated to stockholders because for the investment of their time, or effort, or support the return on investment is that they want you to succeed. If you don’t succeed then you and your stockholders have suffered a loss. As CEO it is your job, from the moment the goal is established, to prepare yourself for the attainment of that goal. To do

this effectively you have to build a strong infrastructure, and for the purpose of this course we will call this infrastructure “Corporation YOU”.Though the following may not have anything to do with your goal directly rest assured that without this fundamental lesson no goal can truly be met. Step one: Set up a systematic way to save money ( I suggest direct deposit). Save at least 15% of your pay each time you get paid. This might take some effort because you might have to

SETTING THE INFRASTRUCTURE (CORPORATION YOU) reevaluate your current spending habits. Step two: Start paying off debt. If you can pay a little extra each month to get rid of debt do it. If you are not currently paying anything make an agreement with your debtor to pay something each month. Caution, do not set yourself up for failure only agree to pay what you can and do not include the 15% you are saving. Step three: Become active if you do not exercise regularly. This doesn’t have to be the latest greatest exercise fad. You can start by stretching, jumping jacks, push ups and sit ups in 10 to 15 minute periods 5 days a week.

ARVIN L. JONES: MANUFACTURING MANAGER, GM NORTH AMERICA Arvin L. Jones was appointed to his current Manufacturing Manager position in August 2009. In this role, he has overall manufacturing responsibility for eight plants in the United States. Arvin also serves as the process leader for GM’s overall powertrain manufacturing strategy in North America. Prior to his current assignment, Arvin served as a manufacturing manager for GM’s transmissions and castings plants since June 2003. He served as the manufacturing director at the company’s Vauxhall Assembly plant in Ellesmere Port, England from August 2000 to May 2003. From

April 1996 to July 2000, Arvin was the plant manager at the Tonawanda Engine Plant in Tonawanda, New York. During his career, he has held various engineering and manufacturing positions of increasing responsibility in both the powertrain and component groups. Arvin began his GM career as an associate industrial engineer in 1977 at the Dayton, Ohio, Delco Air plant. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Engineering from the University of Dayton in 1977 and completed an executive management program at Harvard in 1994.

Step four: Food choices, substitute one thing healthy for one not so healthy thing each day. Instead of that soda choose a real home-made fruit smoothie.

trast, when you take on more than you can accomplish and you don’t achieve it or you quit, that too is building a habit, the habit of failure.

Step five: Strengthen your relationships. Be interested in what the other person has to say, not just what you have to say. We grow through caring and being cared for, that’s how personal responsibility happens naturally.

So what about my actual goal? Continue to read your goal each day and do one thing each day toward the fulfillment of your goal. Your job is to do what you are able to do on behalf of your goal and it will happen. A goal is truly like a seed once it’s planted you can’t go and dig it up everyday to see how much it has grown then replant it, you have to have faith that your deliberate orchestration of actions will lead to success. To feed and water the seed you have to “Believe the unBelievable” that you are what you think you are, you will achieve what you think you will achieve, you will accomplish what you think you will accomplish and finally YOU WILL THINK in order to prepare yourself for the attainment of your goal.

You might say that this is not a challenge, I can do all of this with little or no effort, so im going to do more. If you are already doing more continue but make sure you are doing it on a schedule and stick to the schedule, I would argue that doing it on schedule is just as important as actually doing it. If you are not doing any of this start small and here is why. Remember this is a leadership course not an economic, health and wellness, or a relationship building course. The purpose of these five steps are that you will be practicing building habits of success. The added bonus is that you will also be improving your overall quality of life. In con-

TOYOTA RAV4 LIMITED CONTINUING THE TREND By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View As the trends of small SUVs getting bigger and roomier, yet maintaining good fuel economy, the new Toyota Rav4 Limited keeps it going. Yes we test drove the new Rav4 and found it to be larger than its predecessor and still manages to get a combine miles of 26 per gallon. That computes to 24 in the city and 31 on the road. Power by at 2.5 DOHC 16V 4-cylinder engine with dual VVT-I cranking out 176 horsepower at 6000 RPM the Rav4 produces 172 lbs per foot of torque at 4100 RPM. It is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission providing a smooth shifting gear changing motion.

This front wheel drive vehicle has an auto Limited slip differential and 4-wheel independent suspension and electronic power steering system plus 4-wheel disc brakes. Seems we’ve heard this mechanical performance setup on luxury touring sedans. The power meets the road on 18 inch alloy wheels wrapped by P 235/55R 18 tires. Again we are talking sport luxury sedan type features but we are profiling what is supposed to be a small SUV. Keep in mind our vehicle price tag was at 30,600 fully equipped. Among the options are 11 JBL Green Edge TM speakers in seven locations including subwoofer and amplifier. We are talking about some serious jam-

ming. The display audio with navigation Entune and a 6.1 inch touch screen with integrated backup camera. AM/FM/CD player with MP3/WMA playback capability, Sirius Radio with 90-day free trial, HD radio with I-tunes tagging and the works including Carpeted floor mats and first aid kit helps to round out some of the options. When it comes to warranties the new Rav4 comes with Toyota’s 3-year/36,000 basic coverage along with 5-year/60,000 mile power train warranty plus 5year/unlimited mile corrosion perforation coverage. Toyota Care covers normal factory scheduled maintenance for two years or 25,000 miles which occurs first. The exterior of the new Rav4 is enhanced by roof tails, integrated fog lamps and rear spoiler. It has privacy glass, power moon roof, heated outside mirrors and acoustic front windshield. With an adjustable power lift gate the Rav4 is perfect for woman bringing groceries in out of the rear cargo area. Daytime running lamps also adds the safety awareness of the vehicle Other comfort features are 8way driver power seat and 4way front passenger seat plus 60/40 reclining fold-flat second row seats. The steering wheel is leather wrapped and has tilt/telescopic feature all making it a great fit for the driver!

STUDENT OF THE WEEK

ITIABA OBOT - WALIPP By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View While covering the KCOH AM 1230 block party we ran into an outstanding student from Walipp Prep Academy. The handsome lad is Itiaba Obot the talented and charming son of Albretta and Andy Obot and is holding a 3.5 grade point average. We also learned he plays basketball and loves reading autobiographies in his spare time. Math is the little guy’s favorite subject and he added it has always come easy to help and the challenge of finding the solution has always interest him.

Crediting his mom (Albretta) as his most driving force in life, Obot says she got a handle on things and keeps him on the right path. “When I was little I use to argue the point but after we starting going to Lakewood Church I’ve learned to listen to my mother and understand her more”. The kid with the Million dollar smile went on to say listening to the lessons each Sunday had made his an overall better person. When asked if he would change anything if they made him the Principal at Walipp he said he didn’t think so. “I would have to say I’m pretty well pleased with the way our school is run from an administration stand point. On the subject of Barack Obama becoming the first African American President of the United States he quickly replied he thinks it’s just great.”Without a doubt it is wonderful because it makes me feel I can achieve my goals in life and be what I want to be” Fact is Obot wants to become a Gastro Intestinal expert in his adult life. To be honest with you we are not at all sure what kind of specialist that would be, but we think it would something to do with the gasses the body normally build up. That’s another of the amazing things we learn while conducting these Fiesta Student of the Week Profiles. The hottest topic in the country

The 2013 Toyota Rav4 Limited

right now would have to the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, so we added that to our question list. First of all Obot says he does not agree with verdict in the trail, so we ask if he had any solutions for what is clearly a cultural problem in America. “I feel there is a need for more education as it relates to the different cultural in American and this appeared to be racial profiling on Mr. Zimmerman part”. Having a good feeling about is young life Itiaba says he don’t think he would change a thing if he could live his life over. “No sir the way things are going now I feel I’m getting the most out of life one could hope for. The soft spoken young man describes himself as Intelligent and Black. We think that’s a perfect combination and it sounds great to me. Some of Obot’s activities include being a member of the First Tee Golf Club; a member of Positive Black Males of Houston with that he has college tours set through Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. He is also a student apprentice Entrepreneur summer program and done so well in mock job interview until he and another student have jobs waiting for them when they reach the right age.

Out and About with John Engel TEXAS LODD TASK FORCE I write a lot about military heroes. This time I am going to get a little closer to home. The police have the 100 Club which assists the families of fallen police men and women. The firefighters have their own group called the Line of Duty Death Task Force (LODD). The LODD Task Force was formed to assist the families of fire fighters that have been killed in fire service or on an emergency drill. Locally the group is able to help families in all of Texas. Recently in our town we mourned the loss of four Houston firefighters. Captain Matthew Renaud and Robert Bebee of Station 51 along with Robert Garner and Anne Sullivan of Station 68 lost their lives on May 31 while fighting a five alarm fire at a motel on the Southwest Freeway. Sullivan had just graduated from the Houston Fire

Fire Department area. About four hundred motorcyclists meet up on Saturday morning. This year the ride date turned out to be the hottest June day in history. Breakfast was served by the Cy-Fair Volunteers and a short service was held to honor those that paid the ultimate price for our safety.

Academy in April of this year. In order to raise funds for the families, theTexas LODD Task Force holds a huge fund raising event every June. This year on the last weekend in June, firefighters from all around our area joined together for some fun and fellowship. Held at the Galveston County Fairgrounds in Santa Fe, Texas, visitors can watch a huge fire muster with trophies awarded for best ladder, best pumper, best brush truck and more. There is also a BBQ cook-off with firefighter teams from all over.

Then the ride began! We headed out and went west. The ride took us through Katy, Sealy and on to Rosenberg. There we made the only stop of the ride. From there we went south to Needville, Alvin and finally to the fair grounds. Throughout the entire ride, every intersection was blocked by firefighters showing their appreciation for the ride and the funds we raised. It was a beautiful sight to see the line of motorcycles riding with the support of firemen from all over keeping us safe.

Page 8

When we arrived at the fairgrounds, we were treated to a BBQ lunch and some great music. A silent auction and ride in bike show topped off the day’s activities.

When we ride welcome home events we often seek out fire crews because they seem to have as much fun as we do. They get to make a lot of noise and do not have to roll up wet hoses.

I have ridden escorted rides for many years. This ride is the best organized and for one of the finest causes I can think of. Fire professionals run into burning buildings with little more than a hose and axe. They put their lives on the line daily for people that the will never even meet.

If you are interested in supporting this very worthy cause, you can contact the Texas Line of Duty Defenders Task Force at this email address http://texasfallenheroesride.com/ .

My involvement with this worthy cause was to ride with the Texas Fallen Heroes Memorial Ride. This escorted motorcycle ride is in its fourth year. Volunteers, mostly firefighters and their families organized this tour that starts at a fire station in the Cypress-Fairbanks Volunteer

LEADING CAUSES OF FIREFIGHTER DEATHS The leading cause of fatalities of firefighters is heart attack (44%), followed by trauma (27%), motor vehicle collisions (20-25%) asphyxia and burns (20%). Asphyxia and burns generally affect firefighters under 35 years of age more than stress or heart attacks, whereas the opposite is true for firefighters over 35 years of age. Full time and career firefighters accounted for 33% of fatalities, but only 26% of the fire service. Where fire departments have EMS, calls related to this service may account for as much as 80% of call volume and as low as 50%. However, fatalities associated with these calls are very insignificant (3%). Volunteer firefighters account for 85% of en route fatalities. In the past decade, fatalities during training have risen to 6%. About 8% of fatalities occur at incidents with more than one LODD. TEXAS LINE OF DUTY DEATH TASK FORCEMISSION STATEMENT

“Remembering the Survivors by ever Forgetting the Fallen” “The mission of the Texas Line of Duty Death Task Force is to provide excellent, compassionate, and immediate care to those who have been injured in the line of duty and to the families of those who have died in the line of duty. We also provide caring and objective assistance to departments who have suffered a line of duty injury or death of a member. We believe in giving full respect to the dignity of each individual that we work with, whether it be a family member, an officer, or a rank and file emergency worker. Our wish is to show honor to the fallen (both injured and those who have died) in the work that we do.”

The Way I See It By BIG John Chandler SOME THINGS NEVER CHANGE (NOTE) High School girl’s summer vacation is over. Volleyball practice has begun and I've started my campaign to encourage more of us to support and attend girl sports. Read this column and join me at the stadium. As I entered the M. O. Campbell Center in the Aldine Independent School District to attend the Region II 5A and 4A Girls Basketball tournament, I noticed the same sight I've observed for the last twelvewhere were the fans? I kid you not dear readers; where were the fans? They were not outside the arena, nor was there a big crown on the freeways going north to get to the site. Yes there was the annual rodeo parade for Saturday 02/22/13, but that was completed by noon. There was plenty of time for fans to load everyone up in the car, suv or truck to make the trip to Campbell to support these young athletes. But sadly few did. I have thought about this issue for years bit never sat down at my computer to type a column about it. This time I had to because it is painful and an outright shame of all of us. These young ladies work hard, very hard to play sports. They are not only competing against each other but sadly a mindset that should be out of our minds years ago. There seems to a dead idea that still hangs on that women should not play sports. Yes I know that sounds stupid to print this but yes there are many of us walking around muttering this idiotic thought. Some of us won't support young women playing sports even if we are related to them. I watched talented athletic young ladies play their hearts out to have the chance to advance to Austin Texas to play for a state champi-

onship. Many have worked for this moment for years. They just want the support of family and close friends to enjoy this special moment. I sat there in the arena and watched the joy of League City Clear Springs celebrating their 2013 Region III basketball title; they won it and had a blast doing so. It's just an outright shame that they did it with so few fans in the arena. Katy Seven Lakes High School, Clear Springs’s opponent, wasn't any better regarding fan attendance. I understand that we all have a ton of things to do in 48-hour weekends. Families are loaded with children activities, errands and sometimes (we know 'sometimes' always means 'most times') activities that just wears everyone out and then Sunday is upon us and it’s time for the 40 hour grind beginning Monday all over again. I get that. But can't we squeeze in a couple of hours for these young ladies; our daughters, nieces, cousins and friends? Don't we understand that those little girls sitting in the stands with those big eyes are watching those young ladies on the court and thinking to themselves that soon very soon when they reach their teenage years they too can play basketball? Can we just think of them sometime? No I guess not, because the attendance will continue to be small and we will always question as to why. We have people wasting gas and attempting to crash phony alleged stars and 'their' parties just to gossip about who was there at the event, what they were wearing and more importantly who they were seen with. The more times change, the more things never seem to change. That's just the way I see it!

TABLE FOR ONE Lisa Smith

Tip # 11 Clarity clar·i·ty [klar-i-tee] clearness or lucidity as to perception or understanding; freedom from indistinctness or ambiguity the state or quality of being clear or transparent to the eye; pellucidity: the clarity of pure water. Remember the song “I can see clearly now the rain is gone”? It’s time to take off the rose colored glasses and see things just as they truly are without the smoke screens. Sometimes being in love, enamored with some

one’s physical beauty and just not wanting to face facts about a situation can often leave us at a disadvantage. It’s ok to enjoy the butterflies in your stomach or to gaze into someone’s starry eyes. But when you are not complete, fulfilled or as my dad says ‘can’t see the forest for the trees’ it’s time to get clarity. People are often afraid to ask the hard questions in fear of receiving an answer they weren’t expecting or simply the

truth. As scary as it may be to hear and accept the truth; there is nothing more absolute and freeing than clarity on any situation. We often prolong getting clarity on a situation because it might warrant us to actually make some changes that we don’t want to or are afraid to make. Maybe you are in need of some clarity in a spiritual sense, a relationship, or your current career choice. Whatever you find as a hazy part of your life, step up and ask the questions that will define your next move. You may feel pain and disappointment or tears of joy that you are on the same page or right track. Whichever it may be you owe it to yourself to be “crystal clear”.

STEVIE “GOOD TIME T” BEST KNOWN FOR HIS FRIENDLY SMILE AND EASY GOING WAYS By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View For many years radio fans have listened to the friendly sounding voice of Steven Reginald Talton but Stevie Good Time T was best known for his million dollar easy going smile. On July 13, 2013 Talton passed away after a lengthy battle with Cancer and he most certainly will be missed! The longtime KCOH Disc Jockey built The Love Corner show and people actually called

up asking him for advice. We meet Stevie T a long time ago when he was working at KYOK AM 1590 and we really hit it off. He use to profile my Forward Times Student of the Week on the radio. Having played college basketball Stevie had a special feeling for sports and that was one the things we both loved. Later on while working at KCOH we had an opportunity to talk with Stevie and he helped us introduce Ernie Johnson to the Houston area market. Johnson would guest with him and talk about old ties with Johnson when he was at KKDA Soul 73 in Dallas, Texas. Fact is Stevie T. use to listen to Johnnie Taylor and Ernie Johnson on the radio

back in the day. When Pat Butler informed Johnson of Stevie passing he wept by saying “Every time I look around somebody’s gone. The legendary Soul and Blues Singer who also sings Gospel made the trip to Houston for the service.

T was the MC for the shows and the people loved him for it. Known as a guy you can call upon and get a positive response Talton will be certainly missed by all of us!

Wanting to help get the word out about his program Stevie T also wrote a column for A King-size View “In The Love Corner” it offered advice for relationships and had a good following each month. In his spare time Stevie promoted a few shows and worked hard to help up and coming artists. We worked with Stevie T on the past five years of the Annual Fiesta Black History Celebration Free Music Festival. Good Time

WORLD MOURNS THE LOSS OF BLUES LEGEND BOBBY ‘BLUE’ BLAND By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View Memphis, Tennessee-On Sunday June 23, 2013 one of the world finest entertainers passed away quietly at his home Germantown right outside Memphis. Robert Calvin Bland crossed over to the other side leaving perhaps the greatest legacy in Blues history. On Thursday June 27, 2013 crowds gathered to pay their respect to the legend at First Baptist Church-Broad located at 2538 Broad Avenue in Memphis. People from all walks of life were on hand including the Mayor of Memphis A.C. Wharton and the Rev. Jessie Jackson. Longtime Blues legend B.B. King was there as well as friends Millie Jackson, Dorothy Moore, Ernie Johnson, Denise La Salle and others. Shirley Brown and Otis Clay were also there along with many more. The son of Mary Lee Smith and Leroy Bland, Bobby was born on January 27, 1930 in Rosemark just outside Memphis, Tennessee. Coming up in the church Bland had to go outback and listen to the blues.

Beginning his career on the Historic Beale Street in the early 50s Bland joined the service in 1951. Three years later after his tour duty ended he came to Houston to give it a shot at the Blues. But no work was found until he ran across a fellow by the name Don Robey and the rest is history. In an interview we conducted with the legendary Blues singer in Memphis in 2012 at the Jus’ Blues Music Awards, Bland told us Robey gave him a chance to record after another company had passed on signing him. In 1955 the relationships continued with the likes of Johnny Ace, Junior Parker, B.B. King and most of his old Beale Street Buddies were moving to Robey’s Duke-Peacock Label. In 1957 Bobby struck Gold with his first hit record “Farther Up The Road”. No one could have imaged a shy country boy would go on a 21 year run of cranking out nothing but hits. Meeting Joe Scott added to Bland’s legacy as he and Bobby worked together on his arrangements. This allowed Bland to develop his own style and moved away from

Bobby Bland and his lovely wife Willie Mae Bland

working on songs that had a B.B. King Type flavor. Getting into a grove and developing his own style Bland went back to his roots. While listening to a sermon by the late Rev. L.C. Franklin Bobby picked up that Growl (Loooddd) and was able to include one of two of them in his songs. This set him apart from all the rest and as the hits “Turn on Your Love Lights”, St. James Infirmary, “I Pity the Fool” and Ain’t No Love in the Heart of the City” and many more. As the years went by the hit just kept on coming “That’s the way Love is”, “Double Trouble” Over the years from 1951 to 2012 Bland recorded over 30 albums and 35 singles. One of my personal favorites was “Tit for Tat”.

Soul and Blues Legend Ernie Johnson of Dallas, Texas was in the crowd and wept for several days after learning of Bland passing. “When my brother did in 1978 Bobby Bland told me he would be my big brother and he was always helping me with my music”. Johnson who went on the road with Bland for 3 years (1966-69) patterned himself after Bland and he shared what Bland taught him the most. “He told me to be careful how I phase my songs and make sure and take my time so people will know what you are saying in my songs”. We know that to be fact because if you ever seen Bobby “Blue” Bland perform you can hear him saying “Take your time Son” and also saying “look Out Now”.

Don Robey sold most of his holdings to ABC Dunhill in 1973 and passed away in 1975. Three years later Bland and his band sort of busted up. But the Man Bobby Blue Bland came back strong in the early 80s when he signed with Malaco Records in Jackson Mississippi. In 1985 he released the classic “Members Only” and there were others over the years as the man with golden voice and a story to tell kept right on going.

In talking with Houston Promoter Robert T Turner of Abel Ten we learned he and Bland went back to the Robey years. “He is The Man and there is no one like him and there will never be another Bobby Bland”. Turner went on to say we had some fun and he talked with Bland came away with a good feeling.

We invite you to visit www.kingsizeview.com and click on Bobby Bland photo and you can view the interview we conducted with him in 2012 at the Jus’ Blues Music Awards. It was there Bland told us he felt well and his wife Willie Mae Martin-Bland who is a LPN and the couple’s son Roderick C. Bland took good care of him and he was feeling pretty good. In talking with Willie Mae Bland the other day she said her late Husband had been together for a great number years and he was a very caring person”. He was looking forward to helping us do a tribute to the late Don Robey in Houston. “Robey was a businessman and he surrounded me with great writers, musicians and arrangers, hey man I had the best of everything and great material to work with”. Bland went on to say he felt good singing and had made peace with the Man Upstairs and would continue for as long as he lived. He did just that, when I look back over the years we’ve met some outstanding people and Bobby “Blue” Bland is at the top of that list.

TEXAS JOHNNY RILEY BROWN LEAVES BEHIND A LEGACY OF BLUES It is with great sadness and heavy heart that we share the news of the passing of an American treasure and true blues legend. John Riley Brown, better known as Texas Johnny Brown, was diagnosed with liver and lung cancer this past April and after a short but gallant fight with the disease passed away the afternoon of Monday, July 1, 2013, at the age of 85 at his home in Houston, Texas. The below article was originally written by me and published in the Houston Blues Society’s Fall 1998 Newsletter. Texas Johnny Brown was born John Riley Brown on February 22, 1928 in Choctaw County, Mississippi. Upon the death of his mother in 1937, Johnny moved to New Orleans to live with his father. One of the more amusing stories about Johnny comes from these early years spent with his father. According to Johnny his father had a dog that played the guitar or should I say, his father would hold the guitar on his knee and make chords while the dog would paw the strings. Johnny would accompany the two on tambourine and vocals and later on guitar.

Traveling from town to town the three would play street corners and small clubs for the hat. On one such trip to Natchez, Mississippi, a movie producer saw them perform which resulted in a bit part in the movie “Virginia”. In 1944 Johnny struck out on his own, traveling to Alexandria, Louisiana, where he would meet his future wife, Rosie. Johnny landed in Houston in early 1946 and discovered Shady’s Playhouse. Here he met folks like Henry Hayes, L.A. Hill, Teddy Reynolds, Buddy Carter, and an array of now famous blues men. It was during this period Miss Ann Cullen gave him the name Texas Johnny Brown. Miss Cullen put a band together with Johnny on guitar, and they begin to travel around the state on the now famous chitlin’ circuit. The band later evolved (1947-48) into the Aladdin Chicken Shackers marking the beginning of Johnny’s career. A national tour followed taking them from California to New York’s famed Apollo Theater where he met Lionel Hampton, Willie Herman, Dizzie Gillespie and John Coltrane. Johnny was playing with the “big boys” now, and the dividends from these associations were taking his guitar work to a new level. Returning to Houston in 1950 Johnny married his sweetheart Rosie, enlisted in the military and became a communications expert in the Army’s 26th Signal Corp in Korea. Released from his tour of duty in 1953 he returned to Houston and the music. He hooked back up with Amos Milburn and the Aladdin Chicken Shackers, resumed touring and recorded “Chicken Shack Boogie”, “Took A Long Time” and “Operation Blues”. In 1956

and The Hurricane Band, The Joy Boys and The Peace and Love Band. In 1970 Johnny packed up his guitar and focused his attention on family and the 8 to 5 grind and woodshedded until 1991.

he left the band and played with a number of groups until 1957, at which time he began to perform session work for the Duke Peacock record label. Most of these early recordings were with Bobby Bland and Junior Parker and have withstood the test of time becoming true classics. “Wishing Well”, “Further On Up The Road” and “Two Steps From The Blues” (Johnny’s composition), became one of Bobby Bland’s best selling records.

As soon as the kids were grown, the guitar came out of the case once again to play the blues. Johnny hooked up with old friends like Joe “Guitar” Hughes, Grady Gaines, Trudy Lynn and Teddy Reynolds and was invited to play the Vredendurg Utrecht Blues Estafette (festival) in Holland with Pete Mayes. In 1993 Johnny formed The Quality Blues Band to showcase his 50 years worth of material and talent. The band originally included Joe Griffin (drums), John Newsome (bass) and Mr. Dave (keyboards). The band later

evolved into Donald “Sweet D” Owens on bass and long-time friend, Teddy “Cry Cry” Reynolds on the keys with Joe remaining on drums. The band entered Sugar Hill Recording Studio in 1995 and recorded “Stand The Pain”, “No Part Time Lover”, “Strange Situation” and “Blue and Lonesome” as a demo tape for Austin’s South By Southwest Expo. Shortly thereafter Teddy Reynolds’ failing health forced him to leave the band. Enter Charles Rhinehardt on keyboards, and the band resumed their tour schedule including stops in Paris, Norway and a continuation of studio recording. Charles was instrumental in the initial co-producing of the project, as well as with the horn arrangements.

These were years of constant studio work and touring alongside Bobby, Junior, Wayne Bennett, Joe Hinton, Buddy Ace and Clarence Hollimon. Johnny returned from a tour in 1964 and left the label. He continued to play around town in a variety of bands, including John Robinson

TEXAS JOHNNY RILEY BROWN LEAVES BEHIND A LEGACY OF BLUES Tragically Charles passed away unexpectedly leaving a void in the ensemble. “Charles’ death left me in a state of shock” said Johnny. “He was trying to help me preserve the flavor of the tracks we had already laid down. In the beginning Charles and I went through and put a lot of parts on disc in order to keep the original material as well as the horn parts. Charles wasn’t an easy person to replace. I had to find a keyboard player who would keep that same feeling. Iola Broussard came forth for a little bit and helped out and then we got Alvin King, and he was the answer to the whole deal. He played some of the string parts and some of the organ parts. He is a very talented person and we got through it.” A tentative offer to sign with Antone Record label fell through and the decision was made to release “Nothin’ But The Truth” independently on the Choctaw Creek Record label. “It’s a good feeling to finally have this CD out. I am pleased with the way it is going. I am getting emails from all over, and it is not the same songs that are getting all the airplay. One of the songs was number one for a week in Holland and in Canada, one was number two or three. The CD has led to a number of gigs ... the Poconos Blues Festival, the Chicago Blues Festival and recently a gig in Philadelphia. The CD is in stores and they are moving.” Johnny is still shopping the project and hoping to be picked up by a major label in the near future. “We have talked to a few people but really haven’t got what we are looking for. I’d like to recoup some of the expenses of production and get some of the other

things we need like publicity. I’m trying to get things going but it takes time. I’ve been doing some writing and trying to get ready for the next project. I’ve got about six tunes ready to go and I’m going to do at least two or three covers with my own arrangements to them. I want to pick up some old stuff that goes way back. I was waiting to see which song off the CD would take off and that’s the way I was going to follow up. So far it has been hard for me to select between them because they are playing them all.” The Quality Blues Band currently consists of Donald “Sweet D” Owens on bass, Kerry Cartwright (drums) and newest member William Hollis on keys. When touring, Giovanni Godley assumes the drum responsibilities. “I would like to say thanks to all my friends out there listening and enjoying my CD. I want to continue to do what I think they like. I hope that I can reach them all the time and be around so we can have a good time.” “The Houston Blues Society and radio stations, KPFT, KTSU and KCOH, have been very supportive. And you, James, have hung in there all the way. You were there right at the beginning even before we went into Sugar Hill to record. Rory Miggins from The Local Charm Saloon and Tom McLendon from The Big Easy. I’ve got quite a few people to be thankful for so if I don’t call all their names, I’ll touch them somewhere down the road.” Texas Johnny Brown’s new CD, “Nothin’ But The Truth” is exactly that. Truthful, heartfelt music with enough devotion, diversity and style to catapult him to the

A soft-spoken, kind and gentle man, Texas Johnny Brown epitomized all the superlative qualities of the quintessential blues man. With a career that spanned over six decades, he was the consummate showman. His warm, rich vocals, prolific songwriting abilities and world-class guitar work are testament to a seasoned veteran who lived and breathed the blues he played. Visiting with Johnny the week before his passing was a bittersweet experience for me. We didn’t speak of accolades or career highlights. We sat quietly, held hands and prayed. He spoke of the love he had for all the people, far too numerous to mention, who had blessed his life, and wished that he had a chance to tell everyone how much they meant to him. I asked him if there was anything that he would like me to relay to those on his behalf and he spoke with clear bright eyes and a strong voice and told me ... “Let it be said that if I don’t call your name, it doesn’t mean

ranks of national attention that he rightfully deserves. On behalf of all of us at HBS, I wish him many more years of great music and anxiously await his work to begin on his next endeavor.

Diunna Greenleaf helped to celebrate “Texas” Johnny Brown’s life with a great rendition of “Take me to the Cross”

that you weren’t a part of my life and my friend. Everyone who played a part in my life gave me life.” I will miss my friend and will forever cherish the times we had together, and all the laughter and love we shared. May God comfort and forever hold him in his loving arms. James “The Blues Hound” Nagel

KCOH AM 1230 HAS GOOD TURNOUT FOR BLOCK PARTY ON ALMEDA By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View In one of their first public outing the new KCOH AM 1230 hosted a Block Party on Saturday July 20th . 2013. The radio station that turns 60 years old this year is reaching out to the community it has served for years in an effort to stay afloat. Operation Manager Michael Harris is hoping people make the switch to the new signal and help to keep the tradition alive. “Only God knows what the future hold but we are certainly trying to provide the type of programming our community wants and to let the public know we are still here”. Harris who came to KCOH in 1975 and at one time even won the Houston Press Top Jock contest went on to say he feels good being part of the rich tradition the station has and certainly wants it to continue. By producing relative and informative information as well as a quality brand of music and talk shows to keep the audience they built over the years at 1430 as well as bring in new listeners. However over the past few months the station has taken some blows when the legendary

Wash Allen left and Vel Lock became ill as well as Stevie Good Time Talton passed away on July 13, 2013. With veterans like Michael Harris, Don Samuel, Ralph Cooper, Paris Eley, Lisa Berry Dockery, James White and Akua Fayette joining part timers like Tommy D. Armstrong and Eric “Easy” Robinson and new comers like Reggie Grant, Shaun Balbino and Amanda Garrett, they have some variety to say the least. The next few months will all probability play a big role in the future of the station that so many of us have grown to love over the years. Businesses are asked to support the station by purchasing air time. One business in particular has stepped up to the plate in Bay Way Lincoln and the rest of the Bay Way Group. Vice President of marketing Fred Hoya was on hand

as well as several of their Lincoln Products. Hoya told us the owners of Bay Way are native Houstonians and love working with KCOH and have been for quite some time now. “We don’t get caught up in the numbers or ratings because we know we have gotten a very positive respond from working with KCOH and look forward to working with them long into the future”.

WHAT IS TRUTH? LOVE NOT THE WORLD NEITHER THE THINGS THAT ARE IN THE WORLD There are many in the religious world today proclaiming to belong to Christ, “Christians”: Loving this world and enjoying the things that are in it. Those that truly belong to Christ must remember the commandment given by the apostle John, as he was guided by The Holy Spirit, “LOVE OT THE WORLD EITHER THE THI GS THAT ARE I THE WORLD”. We cannot have it our way, if we belong to Christ, “Christians”. We must do it his way because, we are not our own, we have been bought with a price (1Cor.6:19-20; 7:22-23). Christians must deny themselves, take up their cross DAILY and follow Christ; “Luke 9:22 Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day. 23 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, (1)let him deny (2)himself, and take up his (3)cross daily, and (4)follow me. 24 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it. 25 For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away? 26 For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father’s, and of the holy angels.” Definitions:(1)let him deny-720 arneomai (ar-neh’-om-ahee); perhaps from 1 (as a negative particle) and the middle voice of 4483; to contradict, i.e. disavow, reject, abnegate, 2) to deny someone, to deny oneself a) to disregard one’s own interests b) to act entirely unlike himself 4) not to accept, to reject, to refuse something offered: KJV— deny, refuse. (2)himself-1438 heautou (including all other cases)-himself, herself, itself, themselves. (3)take up his cross DAILY-4716 stauros (stowros’); from the base of 2476; a stake or post (as set upright), i.e. (specifically) a pole or cross (as an instrument of capital punishment); figuratively, exposure to death, i.e. self-denial: KJV— cross. (4)and follow me-190 akoloutheo (ak-ol-oo-theh’-o); from 1 (as a particle of union) and keleuthos (a road); properly, to be in the same way with, i.e. to accompany (specially, as a disciple), 1) to follow one who precedes, join him as his attendant, accompany him 2) to join one as a disciple, become or be his disciple: to side with his party: KJV— follow, reach. Again, the blueprint of The One

Body, The One Church that Christ is building (Acts2:41-47), is found in The Apostles’ Doctrine, which is in New Testament Scriptures. Now, let us read in The Apostles’ of the LORD and SAVIOUR JESUS CHRIST WORD (John 17:1623), as it defines those that belongs to Christ. He that hath an ear let him hear, and then strive to do, if we are to be “They that are Christ’s“. Dear reader, think about it, if we chose to do those things that are not of the Father, then WHAT and WHO ARE WE OF? I Jn 2:15 (1)Love not the (2)world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. 17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.(KJV) Definitions:(1)Love not;25 agapao (ag-ap-ah’-o); to love (in a social or moral sense): KJV— (be-) love (-ed). Compare 5368. 1) used of persons: to welcome, to entertain, to be fond of, to love dearly 2) used of things: to be well pleased, to be contented at or with a thing. (2)world-2889 kosmos (kos’-mos); probably from the base of 2865; orderly arrangement, i.e. decoration; by implication, the world: KJV— adorning, world. 6) the ungodly multitude; the whole mass of men alienated from God, and therefore hostile to the cause of Christ. 7) world affairs, the aggregate of things earthly the whole circle of earthly goods, endowments riches, advantages, pleasures, etc., which although hollow and frail and fleeting, stir desire, seduce from God and are obstacles to the cause of Christ I Jn 2:15 ... Love not the world, (KJV) Eccl 12:1 Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them; 2 While the sun, or the light, or the moon, or the stars, be not darkened, nor the clouds return after the rain: 3 In the day when the keepers of the house shall tremble, and the strong men shall bow themselves, and the grinders cease because they are few, and those that look out of the windows be darkened, (KJV) Matt 6:19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth cor-

rupt, and where thieves break through and steal: 20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: 21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. 22 The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. 23 But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness! 24 o man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. Luke 4:4 And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God. 5 And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. 6 And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it. 7 If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine. 8 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.(KJV) John 15:17 These things I command you, that ye love one another. 18 If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. 19 If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. 20 Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also. 21 But all these things will they do unto you for my name’s sake, because they know not him that sent me. (KJV) John 17:16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. 17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. (KJV) Rom 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the

renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. (KJV) Rom 12:16 Be of the same mind one toward another. (1)Mind not high things, but (2)condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits.(KJV) Definitions:(1)Mind not high things-5426 phroneo (fron-eh’o); from 5424; to exercise the mind, i.e. entertain or have a sentiment or opinion; by implication, to be (mentally) disposed (more or less earnestly in a certain direction); intensively, to interest oneself in (with concern or obedience): KJV— set the affection on, (be) care (-ful), (be like-, + be of one, + be of the same, + let this) mind (-ed), regard, savour, think. (2)condescend to men of low estate4879 sunapago-1) to lead away with or together 2) metaphorically, to be carried away with a) used of a thing, that is, by a thing, so as to experience with others the force of what carries away b) to yield or submit oneself to lowly things, conditions, employments: not to evade their power Rom 13:14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof. (KJV) 1 Cor 7:29 But this I say, brethren, the time is short: it remaineth, that both they that have wives be as though they had none; 30 And they that weep, as though they wept not; and they that rejoice, as though they rejoiced not; and they that buy, as though they possessed not; 31 And they that use this world, as not abusing it: for the fashion of this world passeth away. (KJV) Gal 1:8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. 9 As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed. 10 For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ. 11 But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man. 12 For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ. (KJV) Gal 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. 17

For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. 18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. 19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, 20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, 21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.(KJV) Eph 2:2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: 3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.(KJV) Col 3:1 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. 2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. 3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory. 5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: 6 For which things’ sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience: 7 In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them. 8 But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. 9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; 10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:(KJV) 1 Tim 6:3 If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness; 4 He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings, 5 Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and

WHAT IS TRUTH? LOVE NOT THE WORLD NEITHER THE THINGS THAT ARE IN THE WORLD destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself. 6 But godliness with contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. 8 And having food and raiment let us be therewith content. 9 But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. 10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. 11 But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness. 12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.(KJV) Titus 2:11 For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, 12 Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; 13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; 14 Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. 15 These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee.(KJV) Heb 12:1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, 2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds. 4 Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin.(KJV) 1 Pet 2:11 Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;(KJV) I Jn 4:5 They are of the world:

therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them. 6 We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.(KJV) I Jn 2:15 ... If any man love the world, (KJV) Eccl 11:8 But if a man live many years, and rejoice in them all; yet let him remember the days of darkness; for they shall be many. All that cometh is vanity. 9 Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes: but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment. 10 Therefore remove sorrow from thy heart, and put away evil from thy flesh: for childhood and youth are vanity. Matt 13:22 He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful.(KJV) Mark 4:18 And these are they which are sown among thorns; such as hear the word, 19 And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.(KJV) Mark 8:29 And he saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Peter answereth and saith unto him, Thou art the Christ. 30 And he charged them that they should tell no man of him. 31 And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. 32 And he spake that saying openly. And Peter took him, and began to rebuke him. 33 But when he had turned about and looked on his disciples, he rebuked Peter, saying, Get thee behind me, Satan: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men. 34 And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him (1)deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. 35 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his

life for my sake and the gospel’s, the same shall save it. 36 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? 37 Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? 38 Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.(KJV) Definitions:(1)deny himself533 aparneomai (ap-ar-neh’om-ahee); from 575 and 720; to deny utterly, i.e. disown, abstain: KJV— deny.a) to affirm that one has no acquaintance or connection with someone b) to forget oneself, lose sight of oneself and one’s own interests Mark 10:17 And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life? 18 And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God. 19 Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother. 20 And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these have I observed from my youth. 21 Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me. 22 And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions. 23 And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God! (KJV) Luke 8:11 Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. 12 Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. 13 They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away. 14 And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection. 15 But that

on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience.(KJV) Luke 16:19 There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: 20 And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, 21 And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. 22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; 23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. 24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. 25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. (KJV) Luke 18:22 Now when Jesus heard these things, he said unto him, Yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me. 23 And when he heard this, he was very sorrowful: for he was very rich. 24 And when Jesus saw that he was very sorrowful, he said, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God! 25 For it is easier for a camel to go through a needle’s eye, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. (KJV) Rom 8:5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. 6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. 8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. 9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. 10 And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. (KJV)

James 4:1 From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members? 2 Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not. 3 Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts. 4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God. 5 Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy? 6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. 7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. 9 Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. 10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.(KJV) Dear readers remember as always, the purpose of these articles is to seek the TRUTH according to THE WORD, thereby exposing ERROR, for the purpose of saving our souls. We believe this is best done by definitions and the PREPONDERANCE OF SCRIPTURES; which is having superior weight, force, importance, or influence of SCRIPTURE. Again we believe this allows SCRIPTURE to INTERPRET SCRIPTURE, thereby allowing a better understanding on that topic. Again, thank you so much for your interest in the WORD of TRUTH; GRACE and SALVATION; John 17:17-21; Acts 20:29-32; James1:21-25. After all it is our MAP to HEAVEN and away from HELL! 2 Cor 13:5 Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be *reprobates? 6 But I trust that ye shall know that we are not *reprobates. *{Worthless} (KJV)

Booking: 713-673-6166 Steven R. Talton was born December 29, 1956 at Carswell Air Force Base in Fort Worth, Texas. He was the 1st child of Mildred Jean (Pruitt) and Melvin Ray Talton. He attended Little Tommy Tucker, Dunbar Elementary, Middle and High School. After his freshman year, the family moved to Maypearl, TX where he became a popular student-athlete. Steven loved sports and was a star basketball player and top hurdler for the Panthers. He was active in a wide variety of organizations as well. He was voted Most Popular, Mr. Friendly, and King of Maypearl High. He graduated as Salutatorian of his class in 1974. He spent two years at Dallas Baptist University before joining the Air Force Reserves. While at DBU, Steven played on the basketball team and was a member of the DBU A-Capella choir. Steven later returned to Dallas Baptist to receive his degree in communications. During his military career, Steven played with the Air Force softball team and traveled to bases throughout the U.S. playing the game he loved. He earned an Associates in Electronics from the Air Force. He served as a Technical Staff Sargent in the U.S. Air Force Reserves for 28 years until his retirement in 2004. Steven made his adult home in Houston, Texas where he began his career in radio broadcasting at KYOK. He later moved to Majic 102.1, then to 98.5 where he did the “Love Show”. He also hosted a jazz and oldies show for KTSU. Stevie T moved to KCOH in 1998 where he worked until June 2013. During his many years in Houston, Steven served as a part-time instructor at Alvin Community College for several years. He also worked at Gestener Inc. and most recently was employed by Glazers (at Spec's). Stevie “Goodtime” T represented his community as a member of Target Hunger in 5th Ward. Stevie T also wrote a column for King Size View, “In the Love Corner”, where he was eager to help his readers with their love issues. He gained the name Love M.D. because of the playlists for his show “The Passion Zone”. Of all Stevie T's many accomplishments, his children were his pride and joy. Alainna, Stephan, Kristopher and Krystal Talton, and Tony Hayles will miss their father very much. Granddaughter Ke'Jahnai Williams will miss her T-Daddy. He leaves behind his special friend and partner, Debbie Donovan, his siblings Sissy (Greg) Lowe, Wanda, Barbara and Davidd Talton, nieces (Whitnee Lowe, Destini Talton), nephews (Matthew Lowe, Jonathon Talton). Steven also leaves to mourn his aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family and many, many loving friends and fans. Steven was preceded in death by his parents, Mildred (2004) and Melvin (2011).
