Accompanying the natural change of Nature, we dedicated a special editorial to new luxury perfumes for you. Our Dear Tanja Hintermann wrote an amazing article (“AMOUROUD where AMOUR meets OUD, page 60).

I was granted the opportunity to have an exclusive interview with the exquisite Tanja Dreiding Wallace, the CEO and Owner of the Prestigious Perfumery Osswald. With this conversation, she was able to shine light on the world of perfumery for you. I rediscovered the art of having a facial spa, beauty salon and perfumery all in one phenomenal interview (“TANJA DREIDING WALLACE” , page 26).

Being also from Italian descent, sitting for an interview with CRISTIANO BURANI was such a joy to me, and so was covering his Show at the Milan Fashion Week SS18. (page 76) In this special edition of DARLINGYOU, I also have the pleasure of presenting you with the highlights of the Milan Fashion Week and Backstages in Photos. Tanja and I met at Osswald in Zürich, one day after she arrived from the US. She greeted me with a big smile. I was surprised at how tall she was and how welcome she made me feel before our interview had started. She wanted to talk about the magazine and we began to warm up while exchanging histories about New York.

That was the perfect start to a unique interview that I will cherish forever.

Darling: What was it like growing up around so many fragrances and perfumes?

Tanja: In those days Parfumerie Osswald had a much different selection of lines and products - it was not a niche perfumery as it is today. We were selling Chanel, Guerlain - all those major brands that can be found at all department stores. I actually didn’t like fragrance very much when I was a child! I would play with my mother’s miniature bottles - I really enjoyed that - but it was not an interest for me. Even as a teenager I never wore perfume! My mother wore fragrance, of course, so wearing something would have been a departure for me.

Darling: When you were a teenager, did you feel the weight and responsibility of being the next successor to Parfumerie Osswald?

Tanja: When my father remodelled our location in 1978, I distinctly remember him walking me through the construction site. It was all completely empty, and he told me that one day the store would all be mine. That definitely builds a certain expectation in a child, but my taking over was a long ways away! As you may know, my father passed away when I was 17; my mother then ran the store with the help of a store manager, for many years. At one point, she said to me that she didn’t want to anymore, and that if I wanted to continue the store’s legacy, I would have to come back from New York because I definitely couldn’t run the store in Zurich from there - especially if you’re new to the business! She said, “You have to come back and work at the store, and we will take it from there”.

Which is what I did: I left New York with a heavy heart, moved back to Zurich, and began working at Osswald. That was my real beginning.

Darling: What was having that kind of pressure like: you being so young and being in a place that you love, and having to leave it?

Tanja: Well it was horrible of course; it was heartbreaking. However, life is all about choices, and I was presented with a choice, and returning was the choice I made. I could have said no and stayed in New York, but then my mother would have sold the business, and it would no longer be in our family. And who knows what I would have ended up doing in New York had I stayed? In the end, I did manage to find a way to move back to New York: I opened Osswald New York!

ow, thankfully, it is possible for me to run the store in Zurich from over there, and I am able to travel back to Zurich frequently.

Darling: How did the family business impact you in other ways, and what does it mean to you?

Tanja: Well, in a way it was a relief because when you know that you are destined to take over a business, you don’t really pursue another career. I think in the beginning I was trying to get away from it, which is why I went to New York, to do my own thing. I studied creative writing, which had absolutely nothing to do with the perfumery and the business (although it helped my verbal and written fluency in English, which was necessary for the business!). However after graduating, I wasn’t pushing myself to find a job in journalism or anything similar, because I felt that I knew I was going to have to take over the family business one day.

Darling: Why New York?

Tanja: Because I fell in love with the city! I was eight years old the first time I went to New York. My sister, who is my dad’s oldest daughter from his first marriage, married a Jazz musician who lived in New York. So she moved there in 1980; we visited her back in 1983, and that’s when I fell in love with New York. Later, when I graduated high school, my best friend moved to New York with her boyfriend. It just seemed that New York was where I needed to be.

Darling: So it was like a chain reaction?

Tanja: Yes absolutely, but I feel that I decided at eight years old that I was going to live in New York, with that first visit. I visited many times in-be-

tween; I just always loved the city!

Many years later, I have to say that it was the best decision I’ve ever made. It is a very special place.

Darling: It is! We had the pleasure of actually going to your store in Soho.

So we wanted to ask, how did you come up with this idea? I mean we know about your love for New York, but what made you open a store there?

Tanja: When I had my daughter, I realized that my life would now be very different; that I would have few chances to be myself, to go out and do things that I wanted to do. In Zurich, it seems sometimes that when you don’t have the possibility to partake in something, your chance is gone and will not come back that quickly – that you missed out. I thought that was a little depressing. I felt since I had already lived in New York before, why don’t I go back to the place where everything is possible at all times, and I can do whatever works for me. Also, my husband is American and he never quite really fell in love with Zurich.

New York is where we met and where we belong. I also felt that there was no place like Osswald in New York. There are numerous fragrance stores that are special, but nobody was doing the whole “beauty store” concept like the store in Zurich. By that, I mean a more classic approach to a beauty store: somewhere that you can find everything from makeup to accessories to skincare to spa cabins. And on top of that, where you can find the most wonderful perfumes. I thought that it was a very good idea, to bring this special concept to New York.

Darling: That is very unique, because like you said, there are many places selling fragrances but not exclusive brands - or they do not have this concept of putting all kind of beauty products together. How did Osswald evolve throughout the years?

Tanja: Well, back in the 1980s the most important brands were Estée Lauder, Chanel, and Guerlain – the more mass-market brands that are found everywhere. My father was the one who came up with the idea of opening a beauty salon in the basement of the store. It is now completely renovated, very modern and luxurious, but I remember that it was such an 80s design. And another room downstairs was actually used for fashion shows!

We also had bathing suits, caps, bath accessories, and stockings. Very 80s!

In 1994 my mother decided to completely renovate the store and hired a prestigious Swiss architect to do it.

It was an extraordinary decision for those times. I think she instinctively knew that the perfumery had to change, that it needed to become a more special and exclusive place. That was the groundwork for Osswald as it’s known today – and how it still looks today, aside from a few smaller changes.

Darling: I think she accomplished pretty much what she was looking for.

Tanja: Yes, thank you. As the store became more exclusive, my mother also started to gain interest in niche, rare perfumes. Here’s a fun story! In 1993, she read an article about a fragrance brand called Amouage. She said she wanted to visit where the brand was produced and convince them to introduce their scents at Osswald. I travelled with my mom to Oman for ten days, and we met some of the most important figures in perfumery.

People there were so hospitable, they all invited us to their houses. Everybody offered us mangoes, because mangoes were seasonal and special - I think I had enough mangoes for a lifetime! We were also invited on camel rides, and rode Jeeps over large sand dunes.

It was a trip I will never forget and we became the first importer of Amouage in Switzerland, a brand which we still carry. As time passed, more and more niche brands approached us and our assortment became very selective, and we reduced the number of more commonly known brands in our portfolio.

It was the beginning of the concept by which we still operate today.

Darling: Okay, a very interesting story!

The store is just phenomenal, it is so relaxing and the smells are exquisite.

It is a completely different experience from other stores. This is what I want to put out there to my readers, that Parfumerie Osswald is so unique, and that the work you do in New York is incredible. You do special shows and events: it is a completely different place than anywhere else.

Tanja: We indeed try to bring this special understanding of Swiss hospitality to New York. In both stores, our main priority is our clientele: we want everyone who walks in to feel special.

Another essential point for us is our staff. Our staff is very well-educated and well-trained. They have an enormous knowledge that is just so impressive to me! Our catalogue of fragrances is well over 3,000 individual scents, and they need to know them all. The staff also must have very high empathy and the ability to understand our customers’ needs and wishes. It is a very serious job here: we can’t pick just anybody. They need to have a certain qualification, and the ability to build and learn from each other. It really is not easy.

Darling: I can imagine.

Tanja: We have a lot of long-time employees; we have built a little family!

We grew very close.

Darling: So let’s talk about some expansions. At the moment you have the perfumery on the ground floor and

the Facial Spa on the lower floor. Are you planning on adding something new ?

Tanja: We will definitely add to the store! We are considering the addition of microblading to our Facial Spa offerings, for example. Of course, we always add new brands. It is a key to our success to always find the latest, most precious brands and continuously offer something new to explore at the store. This is what we are known for, and it is our passion. At this very moment we are working on the plans to enlarge and rebuild the perfumery! It’s a very important and exciting project. It’s sort of a gift to ourselves for our one-hundred year anniversary, quickly approaching in 2021. We are getting Osswald ready for the next century.

Tanja: My daughter does, very much.

She likes to smell all of the perfumes, so she loves going to work with me.

She is also very into makeup and dressing up. With my son, he doesn’t really get it yet, but my instincts tell me that he might be the one who takes over the business one day. In any case, I will not make my children work for the business until they are in their thirties. They need some time to do other things and experience life on their own terms.

Darling: If you had the chance to talk to your younger self, what would you say to her?

Darling: Yeah for the big party!

Tanja: I would tell myself to get a law degree! It is so much more useful than creative writing, and as a woman in the industry it makes you a lot more powerful.

Tanja: Yes! There is definitely going to be a big party. I want everybody to come; we will probably have to rent a place outside of Osswald, as all our friends, partners, and customers won’t fit into the store, even if it is expanded.

Darling: Being a woman in the fragrance industry – or any industry! could make you more vulnerable. My final question: what would you say to a woman, or generally to anyone, who is trying to achieve their goals? Any advice?

Darling: It’ll be a great event. Okay so let’s get a little bit more personal now: after having heard your story, I want to know how do you do all of this and be a mother to two kids!

Tanja: I pursue what I want to pursue and I am definitely not a fighter. So, to them I say: stay strong and be the one that lasts the longest instead of the one who fights the most viciously.

Women are incredibly tough so show that toughness, but not necessarily in an aggressive manner. Don’t jump to conclusions in the moment and try to ‘claw at somebody’s throat’, but rather stay calm, gracious but persistent. I think that this is how in the end you will get what you want!

Tanja: Well, first of all I have a husband who helps a lot, but he also works and honestly speaking, it’s not easy. I think every working parent can relate. It’s hard when your children miss you, and I miss them like crazy when I can’t be with them. I always try to make my visits to Zurich short but efficient. I think I mastered this quite well over the years!

Darling: And how about your children? You have a boy and a girl; do they already show interest in the

AMOUROUD – where Amour meets Oud

few days ago, the lovely Flavia, Editor in Chief of the Magazine, and I were invited to Zurich’s most experienced and well-known niche Perfumery Osswald, where we were part of a wonderful Perfume Workshop held by Perfumer’s Workshop International. Denis Roubinet, responsible person for Sales & Marketing, has taken us on a journey into the wonderful world of AMOUROUD. The workshop was very informative and Denis explained everything in a very calm and pleasant way. Not only testing the Perfumes was part of the workshop, but also an introduction of the company behind the brand.

We were told about the company’s philosophy and its aim and quality standard, which made it easier for us to understand the whole story of the company and how the brand was born. The brand Amouroud (www.amouroud.com) has been developed out of the very successful niche scent concept Perfumer’s Workshop from the years 1970 and 1980. This concept was especially very famous because of their legendary Perfume TEA ROSE. Today’s collection exists out of real and imaginary scent memories and stories.

Since 1970, Perfumer’s Workshop has pioneered many aspects of the modern business of making fragrance. As the first company to custom-blend scent in the luxury

category, they paved the way for today’s boutique brands, creating several new niches and markets.

The first break through was a Bloomingdales counter which transformed the idea for using essential oils, a mainstay of the youth and hippie culture, remade as a luxury product, an „uptown meets downtown“ spirit. It was the industry’s first custom-blending fragrance concept. Perfumer’s Workshop allowed the customer to create their own individual scent in a variety of fragrance forms.

The Perfumer’s Workshop custom-blending counters have been in department stores and specialty shops throughout the United States and in many of the world’s most prominent and trend-setting stores for the past 45 years. The company has never stopped experimenting and learning from their world-wide customer base. They say it’s their heritage. Their DNA. The AMOUROUD fragrances are born out of a groundbreaking legacy. Shimmering and dreamy, provocative and dark, light and warm, AMOUROUD is a collection of olfactory real and imaginary stories. Notes of flowers, woods, roots and herbs immediately find their way into our nose and heart, into our memories, where we automatically choose a moment of joy, love, anger or sadness for each different scent of the collection.

When receiving the invitation for the workshop, I was sure, that my

nose and my mind would travel into 1001 night. Only the word OUD made this quite clear for me. But then I got bisabused - in a good way! The collection is more than just Oud. I personally love Oud and I could really take a bath in it. But tastes are very different and many people are running away when just hearing the word Oud. The flavour Oud Oil is extracted by the resin of the so-called eagle tree, which can be found in Southeast Asia. If the trees will be affected by a special fungal attack, they produce the most precious tree resin in the world. The out of this constructed Oud Oil is often more expensive than gold! The Oud scent is very difficult to describe.

People often say, that the scent is fusty and animal. Others say, that Oud smells warm and attractive.

For my sensation Oud is a very warm, impulsive and brash scent.

I personally like it very much, but I’m always very careful with using it, in consideration of people who really don’t like it.

When coming back to our brand AMOUROUD, I am still very impressed by the 10 introduced fragrances. They are all made with this Oud Oil, but for no one of them the Oud flavour plays the leading part. Not at all. The Oud is just giving the scent a warm and supporting note. Very conservative and calm. Totally unexcitedly. And still the scents are very exciting, mysterious and an olfactory luxuriousness.

During the workshop we have learned a lot about the different fragrances and the various scent directions. We have learned again, that niche Perfumes need time to develop and that a scent which was not love at first sight, can be love at second sight! Out of the 10 different fragrances, my favourite one was not love at first sight in the beginning. Now, a few days later, I can not imagine being without this scent anymore. For me, this is pure Perfume Art, professional trade and indeed pure love!

A bit like a candy. Or wait, like a clove? ristiano Burani currently collaborates with MKS Milan Fashion School where a new training project has been created, “The Other Education” where students of the Triennial course of fashion designer are able to work with the designer directly, in Cristiano Burani’s Fashion Laboratory inside the school.

The students will be learning the entire process a designer goes through while preparing a Fashion Show Collection from the conception to entering the Runway.

DARLINGYOU: Thank your for taking your precious time and give this interview to our magazine!

Our Readers want to know what drove you to make this life changing decision and move from Medicine To Fashion?

CRISTIANO BURANI: The switch from Medicine to Fashion design was hard but also a natural process at the same time .

I always loved arts and fashion is absolutely a form of art . Of course it seems far from Medicine but what I learned during 6 years at the University was and still is very useful in my actual job. The studying gave me a method , the way to be on time with the deliveries of the collections , to have the power to follow in a proper and logical way all the steps of a fashion show. I always say: if you know so good a human body from the “inside” then you know how to make its “outside” better.

DARLINGYOU: At what level The New School for Design in New York influenced you on this change?

CRISTIANO BURANI: After the University I wanted to look around for a master in an international University.

I am in love with NYC, where everything seems possible if you have the ambition and the determination to do it.

I made one year course in Fashion Design at Parson’s and it was my first serious and academic approach to fashion industry.

The course was completely market oriented and it was focused on how to make the creativity useful for people : such a visionary idea for that time!

DARLINGYOU: Tell us how was to work in the beginning of your career for La Perla, Blumarine and Versace?

CRISTIANO BURANI: Working for the best fashion companies we had in Italy was for me an amazing experience. I could breath the real “Made in Italy” and collaborate with the owners who had the vision and built the company starting from a family business and changing it into a public company years after. It was a great time : where the creativity was a value and the sales were at the top.

DARLINGYOU: And the Milan Fashion Incubator?

Were you expecting the success you had?

CRISTIANO BURANI: When I won Fashion Incubator hold by the Italian Fashion Chamber, in the same time I was a finalist of Who’s Next Vogue’s competition. That was a double proof of my ability as a designer.

This success didn’t come by occasion but after many years of experience in the best fashion industries and with my own line.

DARLINGYOU: How was the feeling to debut your collection at the Milan Fashion Week Spring / Summer 2010?

CRISTIANO BURANI: It was an incredible opportunity to show my creations to the entire world. Milan is the capital of fashion, the best place where to make a fashion show and where to start the business. Buyers were shocked by the location (an ancient palace in the heart of Milano ) and by my clothes too !

DARLINGYOU: Your collection this SS18 was breathtaking. What was your inspiration?

CRISTIANO BURANI: The inspiration of SS18 collections comes from a trip to Hawaii where I found a vintage floral print.

I was so in love with the colors of the nature there that I decided to put them in the prints.

We called the show: Electro Hawaii for the use of dazzling colors like acid green, purple, ocean blue mixed with a lot of technology in the manipulation of the fabrics: which is deeply in my DNA. DARLINGYOU: What were your favourite pieces?

CRISTIANO BURANI: I love all of them.

I like the combination of masculine fabrics with net tops in bold colors, I like the leather with memory bonding , I like the pleated skirts in polyurethane vinyl, I like the knitwear and the beachwear outfits...

There is a logic/unlogic in the entire collection. I wrote it in the press release of the show : “ What looks like fur is denim or masculine fabric What looks like knitwear is hand knitted leather What looks like paper is pleated silk

CRISTIANO BURANI: I will continue with my experiments on materials looking for new expressions of a contemporary femininity.

DARLINGYOU: Will you some time soon come to Zurich?

CRISTIANO BURANI: I would love to come very soon.

It is a wonderful place and not so far from Milan where I am working DARLINGYOU: Do you have a message to our Swiss Readers on Fashion and on pursuing your dreams?

CRISTIANO BURANI: My advise to women is to combine their personality with fashion and not to just follow it. Fashion shouldn’t be a diktat but just suggestions to pick up and give happiness and beauty to women.

by Jane Turchetti Jane, you were simply mesmerising during the Dolce & Gabbana SS18 Fashion Show in Milan. How was this experience for you?

Walking for Dolce & Gabbana has been one of the most amazing experiences of my life and I feel very grateful to have been given this amazing opportunity.

What is the moment that you will never forget?

Every single moment was unforgettable but the instant before going out there, having everybody’s eyes on you and just feeling special for a second is the moment I will cherish forever. Everybody asked me if I was nervous before the show, and of course I was a bit, but the excitement and the adrenaline had the best of me making me feel confident and happy.

Would you like to do it all over again?

I would love to experience all of those emotions again.

What are your future aspirations?

I hope to walk and shoot for other important brands like Dolce & Gabbana, and with the support of my agency (the Fashion Model Management) I will manage to accomplish my goals and make my dreams come true.

Tell our readers about yourself. Who is Jane?

I come from a very small town in the centre of Italy, my father is Italian and my mother is English, so I know both languages well.

I started to take pictures for my dads shops, I didn’t really consider my self a model because they were very simple shoots. I soon realised that I wanted to take it a bit more seriously, but my parents couldn’t send me to Milan because it’s a five hour drive from my hometown, so I decided to try in Florence which is nearer. At the age of 15 I started to work with Esprit Model Management (my mother agency) which has been supporting me since the beginning. They helped me get experience and understand what modelling is really about. After a year working with them I started to feel the need to take it even more seriously.

I managed to convince my parents to bring me to Milan in May to show myself to The Fashion Model Management (who I’m currently signed with). I went to Milan for the entire month of July. It was a very big step for me, starting to live on my own at the age of sixteen. It was hard to be apart from my family and friends and to get used to Milan, which is a much bigger city than my small hometown.

Luckily my agency became like a second family for me, everyone has been so nice and supportive with me, and when I don’t have casting or jobs I just hang out and study there.

What does it take to become a model?

The foundation I use every day is from Diego Della Palma.

Everybody thinks that to be a model you just need to be a pretty face. But it doesn’t just take that. Modelling is a combination of your looks and your personality. You need to have the right measurements, have an interesting face, but what will make you stand out is your character. You should always be kind and humble, be someone that people will remember, distinguish yourself from everyone, and just be yourself. Unfortunately you will not be perfect for every client, not every casting director will want to book you so you need to be prepared to be let down, but don’t take it personally, don’t think that there’s something wrong with you as a person, you probably didn’t have the look they were looking for. Sacrifice is another important element to become a model, nothing is going to be given to you, because you need to work for it.

Your Favourite Skin Care Regimen?

How do you stay healthy and in shape for the shows?

I have a very simple look, I like having my own style and being casual. I like shooting catalogues, look books and commerce because you get to see a collection before it’s being released, so you get to know which are going to be the upcoming trends.

To keep in shape I play tennis four times a week. I’ve always been a sporty person and tennis is another big passion of mine, I played every day and did tournament but I soon realised I wanted to concentrate on my modelling career, so I stopped playing matches and started training less.

I also have the support of an amazing nutritionist who helps me understand which is the right food to keep healthy. Of course I have cheat days were I eat food that isn’t great for me, but before shows and jobs I’m extra careful, I eat super clean and train extra hard.

I don’t usually wear a lot of makeup, because when I have castings I need to have a natural look and when I go to school I can’t put to much on. I love the way makeup is used in an artistic way when I go and do editorials and shows, and I also love the natural look it can give when you do commercial shoots.

What is the The foundation you cannot live without?

Having healthy skin is very important especially in the modelling world. I used to have acne problems because of my age, but with the help of a dermatologist I managed to defeat it, having of course a few pimples every now and again (but who doesn’t). I hydrate my skin every day and try and use good makeup that makes my skin breathe.

Your most beloved fragrance?

I wear mens perfume, don’t ask me why ahah, but I love Abercrombie perfume for men.

Casual Clothing or Red Carpet?

Hair Products?

I use shampoo and a hair mask, that just takes 3 minutes from Novex.

How do you conciliate your studies with your career?

Since I’m sixteen, I’m still in high school, and being a teen model isn’t easy. Luckily my teachers are very supportive and when I’m traveling for jobs they give me extra time to recuperate when I get back and my friends help me a lot sending me notes of the lessons I miss out on. My suitcase usually has more books than clothes ahah.

I need to work extra hard but I love modelling so it’s worth it.
