FROM THE

Head of School

As you know, Darlington is a beautiful place in the spring. Trees bloom, the grass is green, the air crisp and clear, and the swans enjoy the lake like they own campus. This spring, however, we also saw that it was a little bit lonely and much too quiet without the energy of our students filling these spaces on a daily basis. While school continued virtually last spring because of the COVID-19 pandemic and our students and teachers continued to do great work, we are thrilled to be back on campus this fall for the 2020-2021 school year. Time away always provides an opportunity to reflect and be reminded of what is important. What we saw and were reminded of repeatedly was the fact that there is strength in community and that our strength is our

community. Our community has worked hard this spring and summer to make sure that our campus environment is as safe and healthy as possible. Throughout this issue of Darlington Magazine, you will see examples of the steps we have taken regarding sanitation and cleanliness, social distancing, and the wearing of face coverings, in addition to innovation in the delivery of our academic program to accommodate students both on and off campus. We celebrate some of our healthcare heroes who have been on the front lines and highlight alumni supporters who have had their own unique challenges and realizations during this pandemic. Lastly, this issue includes the Honor Roll of Donors, which celebrates those who financially support Darlington in good times and in difficult ones. We could not fulfill our mission without you. Above all, I hope you will see the strength of community as we all engage the uncertainty that has been placed before us. It is a privilege to work at Darlington and we are thrilled to continue providing this opportunity to our students. Many, many people make this happen on a daily basis, and that is even more evident this year. So, I close with a thank you to our students, faculty, staff, parents, alumni, donors and supporters. You make the Darlington dream a reality and we are grateful!

24 participate in Leadership Darlington Twenty-four alumni representing five states and seven cities in Georgia participated in the school’s Leadership Darlington program in March. “Leadership Darlington is a prestigious and competitive opportunity for alumni to engage with their alma mater and school leaders on an in-depth, personal level,” said Vicki Vincent, director of alumni relations. “The program is designed to increase the number of alumni actively engaged with the school and develop the next generation of Darlington’s leadership.” Members of the Leadership Darlington Class of 2020 included Allen Babcock (’00) of New York, N.Y.; Ben Bagley (’00) of Rome; Ellen (Collier) Beasley (’04) of Athens, Ga.; Bailey Brock (’13) of Atlanta; Bo Cherry (’07) of Houston, Texas; Avery Cypress (’14) of Rome; Dr. Will Edwards (’07) of Rome; Alex Ezell (’94) of Blacksburg, Va.; Katharine Flory (’82) of Columbus, Ga.; Virginia (Johnson) Guth (’79) of Rome; Ivey Harrison (’99) of Greenville, S.C.; David Hoyt (’04) of Rome; Barry Hurley (’83) of Fort Payne, Ala.; Emily (Griffin) Johnson (’02) of Rome; Wynn Jones (’84) of Atlanta; Brad Large (’05) of Gates Mills, Ohio; David Ledbetter (’88) of Rome; Matt Sawhill (’96) of Statesboro, Ga.; Richard Song (’85) of Richmond Hill, Ga.; Gregory Thomas (’07) of Rome; Mac Trotter (’74) of Atlanta; Patrick Wilson (’08) of Atlanta; Dani (Baker) Wilson (’11) of Cedar Bluff, Ala.; and Ashley Wright (’96) of Brevard, N.C. Over two days, participants obtained an integrated view of Darlington, including the internal and external forces that affect the school’s direction and the challenges it faces. The program featured a keynote address by Darlington trustee Hank Linginfelter (‘79), retired executive vice president of AGL Resources. One of the most anticipated events each school year, RUMPUS is a weekend-long competition between the students in each of Darlington’s dorms. Day students join boarding students to represent the houses in a series of events that challenge the mind and body, and points are earned based on performance, theme, and spirit. This year, the ladies of Thornwood House came out on top to claim the coveted title of RUMPUS champion. As always, the weekend promoted teamwork, unity, sportsmanship and tons of fun as the Darlington Community came together as a family.

"Shrek The Musical"

Shrek, played by Owen Payne (’21), and Donkey, played by Siji Soetan (’21), take in the moonlight as Shrek dreams about life as a hero in “Who I’d Be” during Darlington’s presentation of “Shrek The Musical” in February. Based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film, “Shrek The Musical” is a Tony Award-nominated fairy tale adventure that brings all the beloved characters from the film and the book by William Stieg to life on stage. The show featured a company of 62 Upper School students, with 27 actors on the stage, 12 student musicians playing in the pit, and 23 techies serving in various roles as costume and set crew members, spotlight operators, stage managers, assistant directors, puppeteers and extras.

Coach Atha celebrates 150 career wins Head football coach Tommy Atha celebrated his 150th career win on the road last fall with the Tigers’ 21-6 victory against North Cobb Christian. This win sent them into the region championship undefeated. “That was an exciting night for sure,” said Atha, who also serves as assistant athletic director. “To be honest, I didn’t realize that was number 150. I knew we were around there somewhere, but I was overwhelmed when they put up that big banner and handed signs to everyone. My wife, Cathe, and Athletic Director Eddie Guth pulled that off without me having any idea. I think that number is a testament to the commitment my coaches, players and Darlington School have in the success of the program.” Atha’s career at Darlington began in 1993 and during his tenure, he has also coached girls’ basketball and track

in addition to teaching in the history department. Since being named head coach in 2002, he has led the varsity football team to the state playoffs 17 times and coached them to three consecutive region championships from 2009-2011. Additionally, they had a semifinal appearance in 2009, quarterfinal appearances in 2017 and 2018, and were named sub-region champs in 2019. “It has always been a great honor for me to be able to coach and teach at Darlington,” said Atha. “We certainly have always tried to reflect the mission of the school in the football program and, as a result, we have been able to maintain success for a long time. We continue to strive every day to keep that going and get better every time we take the field.”

The Darlington Fund tops $1 million to reach goal Thanks to the generous support of our community and the hard work of many volunteers, The Darlington Fund met its goal of $1,190,000 to support the educational experience for our students and teachers. “Despite all the challenges of a global pandemic, we are so appreciative of the support of our alumni, parents, grandparents and parents of alumni, faculty and staff, friends, and foundations who helped us reach our 2019-2020 Darlington Fund goal,” said Julia (Douglas) Thomas (’07, LD ’15), director of annual giving. “While annual

4

giving has always been the top priority, this year truly illustrated how critical The Darlington Fund is. We are beyond grateful, this year more than ever.” Support of The Darlington Fund allows the school to maintain the health and safety of the campus and community as well as provide the programming that so unique to the Lakeside. With students and teachers spending the spring away from campus, the focus of Darlington’s endof-the-year annual giving campaign became the 115 new alumni from the Class of 2020.

“With them in mind and with the help of some of our wonderful donors, the All In for Our Seniors challenge was born,” said Douglas. “Every new gift that came in was matched one to one. So many of our donors were inspired to increase their gifts, knowing their support would be matched. We are truly indebted to our 1,337 Darlington Fund donors and thankful for the hard work that our Board of Trustees, Alumni Council, class agents, and volunteers put forth last year.”

35 alumni participate in Career Day Career Day kicked off in January with a keynote address by Will Harbin (’95), CEO of Global Worldwide, a maker of mobile games, followed by breakout sessions with 34 alumni. “We were thrilled to welcome Will back to Darlington for Career Day," said Vicki Vincent, director of alumni relations. “I hope his story resonated with students and inspires them to look for opportunities and to pursue their own curiosities.” Prior to Global Worldwide, Harbin co-founded KIXEYE, a pioneer in free-to-play gaming which invented the MMORTS (Massively Multiplayer Online Real-Time Strategy) genre. He has frequently been covered by The Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, USA Today and Forbes. He was also named to Vanity Fair's “The Next Establishment” and San Francisco Business Times’ “40 under 40.”

Career Day breakout sessions covering a broad range of interests were led by Katy (Clawson) Allan (’00), Allen Babcock (’00, LD ’20), Trip Booker (’96, LD ’19), Brooke Brinson (’88, LD ’14), Bill Carroll (’88), Dr. Will Edwards (’07, LD ’20), John Foster (’69), Jonathan Gilreath-Harvey (’07, LD ’19), Josh Graham (’03), Megan (Cox) Henry (’97), Angelyn (Waddell) Hill (’99), Robert Hortman (’99, LD ’18), Dr. Chas Jackson III (’98), Dr. Cline Jackson (’98), Mike Jones (’04, LD ’16), Thomas Kuckhoff (’09, LD ’19), Katherine (Powers) Lightner (’08), Bryan Lowe (’99, LD ’18), Chad Lumpkin (’99), Jennifer Peacock (’07), Chrissy Robertson (’94, LD ’16), Mark Rogers (’94, LD ’12), Annie Rosen (’02, LD ’18), Blake Segars (’99, LD ’19), Scott Shepard (’87), Jeff Snider (’92, LD ’19), Dr. Frank Stegall (’02), Craig Stiegel (’69), Dottie Vincent (’07), Ed Watters (’83), Martha Wilkinson (’83), and Jennie Wright (’99, LD ’16).

Darlington Connects to foster engagement through career connections Darlington’s Advancement Office and Alumni Council have partnered to create a new program that aims to help alumni make meaningful connections through their careers. “Every one of us has countless Darlington connections, especially in the work world,” said Julie (Wilson) Lucas (’97), chief advancement officer. “By supporting each other’s careers and life goals, we are better connecting our students, alumni, parents, parents of alumni, and grandparents.” Still in its early stages, Darlington Connects offers numerous ways to get involved. “You can share more about your career in a Darlington Connects spotlight on the school website,” said Lucas. “You

Fall 2020

can lend your expertise to a current student or recent graduate. You can connect with others in your field or your geographic area, virtually or in person, by using the information in our ever-growing Alumni Directory. Or you can volunteer to be one of our guest speakers at Career Day. These are just a few of the ways we are already connecting people. “This is something that our alumni expressed interest in right away, and we are excited to grow the program with your help,” she continued. “If you have ideas about different ways Darlington can help you connect and grow in your career, I’d love to hear from you.” To get involved or share your ideas, email connect@darlingtonschool.org.

Will Harbin ('95) “Sponsored biannually by the Alumni Council, Career Day is a great way for Darlington to not only connect with our alumni and keep them engaged, but to show our students the importance of staying plugged into the Darlington Community and giving back,” said Vincent.

Golden Circle

Cathy (Sapp ’70T) and John Harrison (’70) have generously initiated membership in Darlington’s newest giving society, The Golden Circle, with their lead gift of $100,000. The Golden Circle includes donors who have contributed gifts of $50,000 or greater in celebration of their 50th Reunion. While these gifts honor the value and impact of a Golden Tiger’s Darlington experience, they are also paramount in preserving the future of the institution. Challenge Accepted Teachers, students embrace flexible learning

Choral Director Ben McVety is always up for a challenge. So when the school began planning a socially distanced version of Opening Convocation to be held at Chris Hunter Stadium, he was already thinking outside the box about what the Concert Choi r’s tr a ditiona l per for m a nc e cou ld look like. “It's not every day I get to put together a video presentation of my Concert Choir to show the entire Darlington Community,” he said. “I have COVID-19 to thank for that.” McVe t y ’s s t ud e nt s re c ord e d t he audio of Andy Beck’s “In the Dark of Midnight” four at a time, each with their own microphone, which allowed in-person and distance learners to be part of the performance. Then, he spent approximately 30 hours mixing and mastering the audio, recording the video portion with students two at a time, and synching the pre-recorded audio to the video tracks. The final product, which can be viewed at darlingtonschool.org/ choir, was broadcast on the jumbotron during Convocation and as part of the live stream. “Despite it being a bit time-intensive, we had a great time shooting this project,”

6

said McVety. “I have received a ton of positive comments and my students were really happy with the outcome.” To comply w ith socia l distancing protocols, Pre-K teacher Beth (Bagby) Smith (’87, LD ’12) recently reimagined her annual shape tigers lesson. “This lesson is a great opportunity for our youngest students to interact with Upper School students and we didn’t want to miss out on that, so we gave it a go virtually,” she said. “My pre-K students have become experts at cutting different shapes, so I knew they would be able to give great instructions to the Geometry class. We ‘met up’ via Google Meet and made our shape tigers together. I am all in for working with classes across the divisions, and this showed me that we can still do it. We just have to be creative!” These are just two of many examples of the ingenuity that is happening daily as teachers and students work through challenges brought on by COVID-19. “This year has been hard with COVID-19 and the many interruptions, but Darlington’s virtual program has had few to no problems,” said Jennifer Preston, mother of Jackson (’26), who is distance learning because he has a family member who is high risk. “We are so thankful for the teachers and administrators that continue to make Jackson’s daily class time so enriching and truly done with heart. Every day, he is interacting as he normally would with teachers and students. I am only required to supervise and make sure the internet works.”

The Prestons agree that Jackson hasn’t skipped a beat – even when it comes to Orchestra. “Jackson is playing lead cello in the Orchestra via computer, which sits in his chair next to his classmates,” said Preston. “In Design Thinking, each student is creating a hole for a miniature golf course, so right now he’s building, gluing, and cutting up a storm getting his farm-themed putt putt hole ready for the pre-K to 2 students to play. We all enjoy being part of Jackson’s day and watching him continue to do amazing things thanks to the dedicated teachers that pull him in!” Darlington teachers spent a considerable amount of time over the summer preparing for the challenges that COVID-19 would bring to the 2020-21 school year. “Teaching and learning is at the heart of our college-preparatory program, and we’ve put into place a new set of course standards and lesson templates to create a more consistent and productive learning environment for students, whether they are in the classroom or not,” said Head of School Brent Bell. “Along with this, we launched a new coursework web tool that is bet ter equipped to handle f lexible learning scenarios. Words cannot express how thankful I am for the investment our teachers make each day to empower our students, no matter the circumstances.” In addition to providing teachers with iPads and Apple TVs to help engage d i s t a n c e l e a r n e r s s y n c h r o n o u s l y, Darlington’s Academic Resources Center created and delivered a five-part virtual professional development series to help with hybrid teaching strategies. “One of my greatest challenges has been redesigning the way I teach to better fit our current circumstances,” said Chandler Cryer, Upper School Spanish teacher. “My once-active and groupfocused class has become more static, but that has given me the opportunity to explore other methods I would not have previously thought of. I’ve tried to make my activities friendlier for online learners by making them more technology-focused rather than using paper or white boards. I have enjoyed using Jamboa rd on the iPad so the students online and in class can see me take notes in real time.

Darlington Magazine

Campus Feature “I’ve also been incorporating more stories into class,” she continued. “These stories are student-driven and 100% in Spanish. The kids have so much fun coming up with hilarious situations, and this leads to an ongoing story that we can come back to every day and a lot of inside jokes. I started trying this method out because of having to keep the students at their desks, and I’ll be using it for years to come. One student recently told me that, even though they had begged before class to be let out early, he was glad that we went the full time and wanted to stay later because it had been so fun!” Steph Bradshaw, middle grades science teacher, says iPads have been critical to the teachers’ ability to make online learners feel connected to daily life at Darlington. “On the first day, I had one of my advisees on the iPad and walked the student around Thatcher Hall as we completed our first-day activities,” she said. “We’ve been able to incorporate them into the daily schedule, including Flagpole, Advisory, Exploratory and Enrichment.” At the Upper School, travel restrictions a n d v i s a d e l ay s m e a nt t h at m a ny international boarding students did not arrive on campus until after the school year had already begun, and some will be distance learning for the entirety of the first semester. “The school has prepared the kids well for the different type of school year they are having, so whether they are online or in person, they’ve come to class ready and excited to learn,” said Cryer. “Keeping the online learners as integrated in the class as possible helps them stay on track and feel included. I have in-class students talk to online learners every day during conversation time. I also try to incorporate games that everyone can take part in, such as Kahoot, and guest speakers from all over the world who come to talk with the class via Google Meet. For asynchronous learners, I make a video each day explaining what we went over and outlining the activities they need to do.” Leigh Hadaway, Upper School history teacher, has made many of her projects more digital.

Fall 2020

“Regardless of COVID-19, it’s helpful to utilize digital technology because it builds skills that will be useful in an increasingly digital society,” she said. “Having new tools such as the iPad and Apple Pencil has been a great way to digitize things and make them more interactive for online learners. Recently, my Human Geography class and I had so much fun looking at different interactive maps. Although it was a small moment, it was encouraging that all my students were engaged and excited about learning.” Darlington’s college guidance staff is working hard to provide the same level of support and exposure they normally would by shifting to virtual platforms. “Seniors still spent the first day of school in College Boot Camp, working with their college advisers and connecting with college admissions representatives via Zoom,” said Ivy Brewer, associate dean of college guidance. “That went really well, despite the new territory. In lieu of our annual, on-campus College Fair, we hosted daily virtual college visits throughout September, and our seniors participated in a virtual college fair set up by the National Association for College Admissions Counseling. The students have enjoyed talking to the college representatives and learning how to ma ke themselves sta nd out while applying.” Though many things look different this year, students, teachers and parents alike have embraced the challenges. “To say that I was feeling anxious about the start of school would be an understatement,” said Melissa Smyly, Upper School English teacher. “I wanted my new coursework tool to be ready, my videos to be recorded, my classroom to b e s a n it i z e d, my te ch nolog y to be foolproof, my thermometer to be functional, my mask to be comfortable, and my content to be relevant. During my first actual class, I was working so hard trying to connect the online students with the in-person class that I was literally sweating. I just didn't want to disappoint anyone. Thankfully, my students rose to the occasion. In every single one of my classes, my students have been friendly, compassionate, engaged, cooperative, forgiving, flexible, helpful and in good humor. This is going to be a great year!”

Healthcare

HEROES COVID-19 has disrupted our world and no one knows that better than the medical professionals who see it every day. In the next few pages of this magazine, several members of our school community who work in the field of healthcare share firsthand their observations, challenges and sources of inspiration. Thank you to everyone in the Darlington Community and beyond who has dedicated their life to caring for those in need. You are heroes!

As an emergency medicine resident at the University of Kentucky, Dr. Jack Yancey’s (’10) focus with all patients is resuscitation and stabilization. “This is particularly important with COVID-19 patients or any patients presenting with respiratory distress,” he said. “The spectrum of disease severity is wide, so this can range from immediate intubation and ICU care to observation, reassurance, and discharge home after discussing what to expect and when patients need to return to seek medical care. Working as a resident in the middle of a global pandemic has opened my eyes to just how quickly medicine can change.”

Blair (Stegall) Bowden (’03), a cardiac nurse at Emory St. Joseph’s Hospital Advanced Heart Failure Center in Atlanta, says it has been a humbling season to serve as a nurse. “We have been seeing more and more of our patients who have contracted the virus and have thankfully recovered. However, in some cases, the virus has caused a worsening of their heart failure, which has been a challenge for many of our affected patients,” she

8

said. “Patients and families have been gracious to ask about my well-being during this time, and have brought us extra food and snacks as a token of their appreciation. The community has rallied around us, posting signs of encouragement and support. In such divisive times, it has been refreshing to see the community come together in supporting each other.”

Sara (Pate) Congdon (’08), primary care pediatric nurse practitioner at Harbin Clinic in Rome, says acute sick visits are common in the fall and winter months, especially this year with COVID-19. “One of the most important roles I have in these uncertain times is providing patients and their families with tangible things they can do to help stay healthy -- wash hands, wear a mask and socially distance,” she said. “We have seen an increase in children and teens with anxiety pertaining to all the uncertainty in their lives and routines. This has created a unique opportunity for me and my colleagues to not only care for their physical ailments, but also care for their hearts and minds in these uncertain times.”

Jennifer Peacock (’07), ICU nurse at Floyd Medical Center in Rome, says working on the front lines of COVID-19 has forever changed her, both personally and professionally. “It’s hard to quantify what holding someone’s hand when they die so they won’t be alone feels like or how to put into words the defeat you feel talking to someone one day and losing them the next,” she said. “But that’s just the nature of the beast we face sometimes in healthcare. For me, it further solidifies that we should never take a moment for granted and live each day with passion and purpose. Loving one another is powerful, and my hope is that we don’t lose that sentiment as the virus drags on.”

Dr. Darshak Pandya, Darlington parent and pulmonary/critical care physician at Harbin Clinic in Rome, and his partners are responsible for the care of the sickest people with COVID-19. “There has been a significant outpouring of goodwill from our community,” he said. “This appreciation goes a long way and helps reenergize me and my colleagues to keep up the good fight. The unified spirit of the entire Rome medical community to come together and deliver the most aggressive and best care that we possibly can under these circumstances has been inspiring.”

Healthcare HEROES Dr. Rob King, Darlington parent and otolaryngology specialist with Harbin Clinic in Rome, spends his days navigating the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the ears, nose, and throat, most of which present with symptoms indistinguishable from those associated with COVID-19. “This pandemic has fundamentally changed the way doctors interact with their patients,” he said. “Simple smiles are no longer shared. Hearing-impaired patients who rely heavily on lip reading are even more isolated from us behind our masks. Every clinical interaction is approached through the filter of potential exposure by both provider and patient, greatly affecting the intimacy and collegiality of the once-sacred doctor-patient relationship. The personal connection that had become the most rewarding aspect of being a physician is palpably diminished.”

Dr. Matt Mumber, Darlington parent, Board member, and radiation oncology specialist with Harbin Clinic in Rome, has had to shift to providing essential anticancer therapy to his patients mostly virtually since the start of the pandemic. “COVID-19 has made me more aware of the preciousness of human interactions,” he said. “It has been difficult seeing patients mostly by computer screen. There is something about being with a person in person that I took for granted. My patients and staff inspire me every day by showing the courage to live their lives in such a way that they are a service to self and others. It has been inspiring that patients will ask me how I am doing and encourage me to stay safe, while they are going through a major health crisis.”

Dr. Steven Winkler (’72, LD ’15), administrator at Hematology Oncology Clinic in Baton Rouge, La., spent the first weeks of the global pandemic making sure that the clinic had sufficient staff, personal protective equipment, and supplies to care for patients. “The best part of these situations is that the staff comes together to do whatever it takes to take care of the patient,” he said. “That has to be one of the most rewarding parts of my job. The staff will make it work no matter what. My wife, Monica, chief nursing officer at Baton Rouge General, traded her street clothes for scrubs and worked over 90 days straight before taking a day off to make sure everyone was taken care of – patients, staff and physicians. We celebrated those that the recovered and cried with the families of those that did not survive.”

Fall 2020

Kinslee Clevenger (’15), CCU nurse at Redmond Regional Medical Center in Rome, has worked exhausting hours, especially at the start of the pandemic, but she says she has felt supported by the community and her colleagues in healthcare all along the way. “There are so many examples,” she said. “Robin Cater, one of the managers at Floyd Medical Center, gave me her personal P100 N95 respirator mask that she did not need so that I could have extra protection, and I have worn it every day. This has been a difficult time for everyone, but it is definitely inspiring to be able to watch people recover from grave illness and return home to their families.”

Maggie Beth (Atha) Ralston (’14), ICU nurse at Floyd Medical Center in Rome, has been caring for critically ill patients in the designated COVID-19 ICU since the start of the pandemic. “This has forced me to grow up a lot as a young nurse,” she said. “I’m fortunate to have spent my first year surrounded by very intelligent nurses who helped mold and prepare me for what this pandemic has thrown my way. I’ve been inspired by people's strength and faith, and am ever-thankful for the nurses that show up every day and night and mask up countless times each shift to do all of the simple and tough tasks in full PPE. I’m so lucky to be at the bedside with these people.”

Bew White (’68) Forging your own path

Te xt i l e s a n d fa br ics a r e st itc h e d i n to Bew White’s (’68) family story. His greatgrandfather was Braxton Bragg “B.B.” Comer, former governor of Alabama and founder of Avondale Mills, a textile company based in Birmingham. Before White could jump into an expected career with Avondale Mills, however, he needed to pursue an education. That path led him to Darlington School for the boarding experience. Bew was very active in campus life at Darlington as a soccer player, cheerleader, member of the Pep Committee, proctor and Darlingtonian staffer. He was also involved with the Darlington Players. He recalls with fondness the bonds forged between the day and dorm students – or “day dogs” and “dorm dirt” as he referred to them.

Fall 2020

“The constant social interaction with others was very helpful,” said White. “Living in a dorm away from your parents from the time you’re 16 years old is initially a big wake-up call, but certainly matures you more quickly.” After Darlington, White earned a B.S. in Textile Engineering from Auburn University and, while there, met and married his wife of 48 years, Wendy. After college, he went into the family business as Avondale’s salesperson in New York with the Northeast as his territory. With clients such as K-Mart and JoAnn Fabrics, White covered a territory ranging from Ohio and Michigan to Pennsylvania and New York. He was a successful salesman, but eventually realized that he wanted to try something on his own. At just 28 years old, White left his job in the Northeast and started a sales representative company in 1978 called Vista Corp., which specialized in selling outdoor furniture. In 1987, he started multiple companies in an effort to expand from selling on the road to building a national brand. One of those companies was Summer Classics, created with the intent to design and manufacture products that White would want in his own backyard. With a business model based on creating products that were consumer driven, would stand the test of time, and would not go out of style, Summer Classics officially took off in 1987. Three decades later, Summer Classics has become a leader in the design, marketing and retailing of high-end outdoor furniture. Due to the seasonality of the outdoor furniture market, White has continued to seek fresh ways to expand business. In 2008, he recruited his son, William White, to head up a new indoor furniture brand called Gabby (named after his grandmother, Gabrielle “Gabby” Comer). Gabby, which debuted in 2010, is credited with the growth of annual revenue since its launch. This prompted the creation of a third product line in 2018, Wendy Jane, a

collection of handcrafted indoor and outdoor pillows created by White’s daughter, Wynne (White) Martin (’00). “Your children tend to tell you things your employees won’t tell you, which can be helpful,” said White. “Building a company is very difficult, but when your children see how everything works and can make people’s lives better (including their own), they tend to immediately get it! Working with them is probably one of the great blessings of our lives.” Summer Classics can now be found in all 50 states and Canada, offering products to hundreds of dealers throughout the United States. There are 13 Summer Classics Home retail stores where Summer Classics, Gabby and Wendy Jane products can be found in one location. Initially, COVID-19 halted business at Southern Classics, but most stores opened within a few weeks once new protocols and procedures had been put into place. Since then, business has been strong. “It turns out sitting outside is a good thing and people are doing it a lot,” said White. “In fact, we recently donated a large sum of furniture to Darlington so more students could sit outside.” The shift to the outdoors is evident on Darlington’s campus these days as students spend their breaks together and enjoy their lunches outside, sitting on the furniture donated by White. Some teachers also have classes in these beautifully furnished outdoor spaces. “Bew has faithfully donated outdoor furniture to Darlington over the years as a way to enhance the enjoyment of the campus for our school community and all who visit,” said Julie (Wilson) Lucas (’97), chief advancement officer. “He loves Darlington and is such a great example of how we can connect the passion and business of a donor directly with our student experience. We are so grateful for Bew and his continued love of the school.”

Bill Smith (’72) Distinguished Alumnus

Bill Smith knew the day he visited Darlington’s campus that he was where he needed to be. His friend from summer camp, Tom Barron (’70), toured him and Smith’s connection to the Lakeside was sealed. “From the first day of school in the fall of 1968, Bill and Darlington just clicked,” recalled classmate Dr. Bob Hortman (’72), chairman of the Board of Trustees. “He was a great citizen of this campus, filling the Coke machines, delivering newspapers to the dorm rooms, all the glamorous jobs. But seriously, Bill was into everything.” Smith’s fingerprints were truly all over campus as a Darlington student. He served as associate editor of the Jabberwokk and chairman of the Dance Committee; served on the “Y” Cabinet and the staff of The Darlingtonian; and was a member of the Darlington Players, the Pep Club, the Honor Council, and other organizations. He played baseball, basketball and was captain of the cheerleading squad. He also worked at the Maple Street Community Center, the school’s service project at the time. At graduation, Smith was honored with the Faculty Medal for General Excellence for his service to school and community. “I always say that you only make a handful of big decisions in life – who you marry, where you live, having children,” said Smith. “Darlington was one of those decisions for me. While there, I learned to read and write at a level I had never experienced before, and this made college easy for me.” After Darlington, Smith went on to earn a B.S. from Florida State University, where he is still active. He is a member of the Florida State University Athletic Board and has previously served as national

president of the Florida State University Alumni Association, chairman of the Florida State University Foundation, and as a board member of the Florida State University Research Foundation. In 2009, he was inducted into Florida State’s College of Business Hall of Fame. A native of Tallahassee, Fla., with banking in his blood, Smith is chairman, president, and chief executive officer of Capital City Bank Group Inc. and chairman of the board of Capital City Bank, where he has worked since 1978 in numerous capacities. He serves as the third generation of family leadership for the institution, which began over 100 years ago with his great-grandfather, William Henry Smith. Banking during a global pandemic has been an interesting experience for Smith’s team at Capital City Bank as they adjust business practices while still moving forward. The year 2020 was to be celebratory for the bank, marking its 125th year in operation and making it the oldest of all Tallahassee-based businesses. “We had a large celebration planned as part of our annual shareholder’s meeting in April and shifted that event from in-person to virtual,” said Smith. “We’ve also commissioned a book of stories about the bank and will soon release that to our teammates and directors.” Currently a member of the board of directors of Capital City Bank Group, Capital City Bank, First National Bankers Bank, and Southern Co., Smith’s past service has included

entities such as the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, Southeast Community Hospital, the Florida Bankers Association, Memorial HealthCare, the Tallahassee Area Chamber of Commerce and others. A loyal Darlington alumnus, Smith serves the school as a member of the Board of Trustees, a Visitor Emeritus, and a former class agent. He has been the honorary chairman of Leadership Darlington for three years and is also a member of the J.J. Darlington Society and the J. Daniel Hanks Sr. (’27) Heritage Society. Smith was recognized for his career contributions and devotion to the school last October when he was named Distinguished Alumnus during Alumni Weekend. In his address to the student body and his friends, he emphasized the importance of connections made by the Lakeside. For nearly half a century, the Class of 1972 has been a model example of a class that has valued their lifelong relationships with one another and with the school where it all began. “Bill has freely given Darlington his time, treasure and especially his heart,” said Hortman. “Bill may tell you that he’s a better man because of Darlington, but I say that Darlington is a better place because of Bill Smith.” Smith and his wife of 44 years, Paula, have two children, William and Jennifer, and two grandchildren, Ford and Cameron.

Thomas Mew (’90) From company to courtroom

From the stage at Darlington to the U.S. Supreme Court, Thomas J. Mew IV (‘90) has taken the foundation of creative and critical thinking skills he acquired during his time at the Lakeside and used them to build a successful career in law. “Naturally, there was broad academic rigor at Darlington, but I also enjoyed the diversity of the student population that opened me to different viewpoints and experiences from around the world,” he said. A number of teachers stand out in Mew’s memories, but he says his English and drama teacher, David Powell, had a profound inf luence on his life.

Fall 2020

“The way he challenged his students to read a text, read more deeply, and then think about potential interpretations helped me look for meaning beyond the surface of the words,” said Mew. “He would also use a text or play in the drama program to set how the narrative would play out, and that is important in what I do every day.“ Powell, along with the late George Awsumb, helped Mew lay a foundation of communication and creativity. “Law is a lot like storytelling – telling the story in a way that resonates with people,” he said. “I learned much about the creative process with David Powell and George Awsumb, and anything you do in law is a creative process.” After Darlington, Mew earned his B.A. in History from Davidson College and went on to the University of Georgia Law School, graduating magna cum laude in 1997. He met his wife, Catherine, at Davidson, and the two were married in 1998. After law school, Mew served as a law clerk to the Hon. Herschel P. Franks of the Tennessee Court of Appeals and to the Hon. Harold L. Murphy of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. He practiced for many years at Rogers & Hardin and is now a partner with Buckley Beal in Atlanta. Mew’s practice covers a broad range of employment law matters, including both individual and class action wage-and-hour, discrimination, and harassment litigation, as well as in arbitration and mediation. He is also an adviser on employment contracts, releases and restrictive covenant issues. Mew has represented clients at all levels in state and federal courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court. In a 6-to-3 ruling on June 15, the Supreme Court decided that Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination “because of sex,” includes LGBTQ employees. Mew represents Gerald Bostock, petitioner in Bostock v. Clayton County, Ga., and led the

charge to secure this historic civil rights victory. “There are no words to fully express Gerald Bostock’s sincere gratitude for the Supreme Court’s decision in his case,” said Mew. “In a moment when so many are hurting and reeling from the injustices of inequality, this is a positive step in the right direction for equal rights. But there is still so much work to be done, as recent events underscore.” According to Mew, having a case heard in the U.S. Supreme Court is very much about being in the right place at the right time. “Representing a client in the U.S. Supreme Court was a pretty incredible experience,” he said. “It was a case that really needed to be heard by the Supreme Court because there was division in the lower courts across the country. This outcome will add uniformity across the country. I was cautiously optimistic about the outcome because we had always felt that the argument we were making was the most consistent with the text of the statute. I was thrilled to see it and thrilled to be able to share the result with my client.” The landmark case brought national attention to Mew and his firm, and it was his teacher and friend David Powell that made certain that Darlington was aware of the accomplishment. “Thomas was a fine student – honest, witty and talented,” said Powell. “He never backed away from a challenge, and in fact tackled one very difficult acting role in Chris Durang's ‘Baby with the Bathwater.’ I had the pleasure of watching his daughter, Eden, perform last January, and it was a circle-of-life moment a teacher sometimes gets to witness. I'm immensely proud of Thomas' significant legal work in a landmark decision, and it helps me feel our future is in good hands.”

Sean Atkins (’99, LD ’15)

Finding your foundation Sean Atkins (’99, LD ’15) learned the value of relationships at a young age. Now director of admissions and financial aid at Suffield Academy in Connecticut, he says the COVID-19 pandemic has emphasized that it is personal connections that make an organization and community resilient. “I’ve realized just how important our institution is to our families,” Atkins said. “I think sometimes it’s easy to overlook the work that everyone does to make a community whole. COVID-19 has taught me that nothing in a community can be taken for granted. The foundation and importance of community for me all started at Darlington.” Atkins enrolled as a boarding student his sophomore year thanks to a scholarship from the Boys’ Club of New York. Having grown up in the East Village in Lower Manhattan, he found the South to be a welcome change of pace and the people to be genuine. “The connection I had immediately with Darlington’s teachers and faculty came at a pivotal time in my life and it was needed,” he said.

Fall 2020

“Their warmth instilled confidence in me to be a more active learner and helped in my athletic career, too.” At Darlington, Atkins became a resident assistant in his dorm, served on Student Council and was a threesport athlete. He played basketball, ran track and was a member of the 1998 Class A Georgia state championship football team. “Sean came to Darlington as a basketball player from New York City and had never played football before,” said Tommy Atha, head football coach and assistant athletic director. “It was obvious from the start that this young man was tremendously athletic. He had never put on a football helmet before and it took a little getting used to.” As a junior, Atkins was primarily a backup running back who played some on special teams, but Atha moved him to nose guard the following year. “Sean was built like anything but a defensive lineman, but he was so quick and strong you couldn't block him,” Atha said. “He totally changed our ability to attack on the defensive side of the ball. By the end of the year, he was being double teamed every play, which essentially gave us a numbers advantage defensively. Sean ended up that year as the Class A Defensive Player of the Year for the entire state. He always played with great intensity and absolutely no fear, and he’s still one of my favorite people in this world!”

While marked with tremendous success in athletics, Atkins’ time at Darlington also brought sadness with the loss of his mother at age 16. The Darlington Community surrounded him during this time of grief, especially retired basketball coach and educator Jim Van Es. “Coach Van Es was like a father figure to me,” said Atkins. “He was gruff but also gave me warm, tough love. This was exactly what I needed during that time, and I am happy to say that we still stay in touch.” After Darlington, Atkins attended Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, where he played football and still holds the single game rushing record. In 2003, he graduated with a B.A. in African American Studies. Life came full circle for Atkins when a position opened up at the Boys’ Club Independent School Placement Program, the very organization that brought him to Darlington. For nearly seven years, he served as director of the program, helping place over 300 young men in independent schools around the country. When Atkins became a father, his wife, Yasmin, encouraged him to pursue a career in boarding school admissions. “Living in New York City was expensive, and a career change happened somewhat by mistake,” he said. “I was going to Suffield Academy to see a student that I had placed graduate and happened to find out about an opening there.” Atkins made the move to Suffield Academy over a decade ago and lives on campus with his wife and their children, Sean Jr., Gavin, and Juliet. He also helps out with the boys’ varsity basketball team. No matter how busy things get in life, Atkins finds time to give back to Darlington as a member of the Alumni Council and a graduate of Leadership Darlington. “Darlington is the place that shaped me as a person, as an educator, as a father and as a husband,” said Atkins. “In some ways, besides my parents, Darlington is the foundation of who I am, and I will always give back.”

Kristen Rachels (’05, LD ’16) Gratefully giving back

She has more than a decade of experience driving growth for global software companies, but if you were to ask Kristen Rachels (’05, LD ’16) where she got her start, she would emphatically say Darlington. “I talk about boarding school before I talk about what I did in college,” she said. “Darlington was so fundamental in framing my personal outlook on life. Darlington is 100% the reason I am where I am in my career and personal life.” Rachels is ever-thankful to former Head of House James Milford for seeing her potential during the admission process. “To know that someone saw something in me and believed in me at that time in my life was foundational,” she said. “The Head of House role is so critical to the life of a boarding student, and James was like a father, mentor, and cheerleader. As a four-year boarding student, Rachels thrived. She was a house leader, played volleyball, cheered, worked on the Inkslinger literary magazine, was active in the Environmental Awareness Club and even helped in admissions.

“My time at Darlington had an effect on my critical thinking skills and curiosity about life,” she said. “I also began to develop hard life skills like interglobal communication and how to function in society with varying viewpoints and ideas. “ One of Rachels’ mentors was visual art teacher Kathy O’Mara. “Kathy really brought out something I didn’t know was there,” she said. “I thought differently about my art, and she helped me to explore my uniqueness as an artist. As an adult, I am now comfortable with challenging ways of thinking, trying new things, going out of my comfort zone.” O’Mara still uses samples of Rachels’ artwork with her current students. “Every project that I give to my students, I try to get them to explore the possibilities; for many, that is difficult because they haven’t yet found their artistic voice,” said O’Mara. “For Kristen, it was immediately different. She is one of my favorites, a treasure. When creating art, she would look at other artists for inspiration, but she always took it and made it her own. You could always see the wheels turning. She was fearless. I’m super proud of her.” After Darlington, Rachels went on to graduate with a B.S. in Communications from the University of Georgia and, since then, has developed a reputation as one of the most respected women in technology. After nearly a decade with leading enterprise mobility software companies PowWow Mobile and StarMobile, she now serves as vice president of marketing for Itential, a software company developing intelligent automation for multidomain networks. Itential was recently named to Inc. Magazine’s 5000 list of America’s Fastest Growing Companies, and Rachels is responsible for all go-to-market strategy and execution, sales and channel partner enablement, field and event marketing, corporate communications and analyst

relations, as well as design and creative strategy. When COVID-19 hit, she began managing her international marketing team remotely. “Thankfully, we were already optimized as a digital-first organization with all the necessary tools and protocols to work from anywhere and collaborate from afar,” she said. “With over 40% of our workforce remote and spread throughout the globe, the transition was actually pretty seamless for us with little disruption. As a manager of a distributed team that are all now working virtually, it's been really awesome to see how we are more efficient and streamlined, and more connected as humans and friends than we were pre-pandemic.” Ever-busy in her career, Rachels always makes time to give back to the school that shaped her. “Kids today are really the future of the world, and it is rapidly changing,” she said. “There is a huge opportunity for Darlington to compete in this next generation, and I want to help Darlington to continue on into the future while retaining its character and traditions.” She serves on Darlington’s Alumni Council, has been a Fairy DarMother to female boarding students, presented at Career Day, and participated in Leadership Darlington. Her husband, Thomas Gatliff, also donated a state-ofthe-art 3D printer to the Upper School MakerSpace and they are contributors to The Darlington Fund. Rachels is especially proud that her brother, Boyd Rachels (’23), and her cousin, Alden Baker (’23), enrolled as boarding students at Darlington this year. “Darlington taught me to challenge everything, to never be satisfied with the status quo, to crave learning, to be curious, to push boundaries, and to never stop seeking,” she said. “Resiliency, grit, perseverance, strategic and critical thinking, compassion, and empathy are all skills that became rooted in me during my time at Darlington.”

In Memoriam

John Thatcher (’44) Leaving a legacy of love

When Mary and Samuel Thatcher decided to send their son, John (’4 4), to Darlington in the 1940s, they knew the value of boarding school, but they couldn’t have imagined just how defining the experience would be for him. Throughout his life, John’s love for Darlington grew and never wavered, resulting in a legacy that will be felt by generations to come. “I’d like to tell you a story about a young boy I knew. He wasn’t doing very well in school. He wasn’t failing, but he was certainly poorly motivated and he wasn’t being challenged. And, furthermore, he was bashful and self-conscious and insecure, and the prospects were poor that he would ever have a very successful life,” Thatcher said during a speech he gave as chairman of the Board of Trustees in 1996. “But he did have two things going for him: two loving and concerned parents who heard about Darlington School and made sacrifices so they could send him

Fall 2020

here. At Darlington, he found an entirely different atmosphere. With Darlington’s encouragement and influence, he was able to turn his life around.” As a Darlington student, John Thatcher truly thrived. He played varsity baseball, was a member of the band, and worked on the school newspaper, graduating as a member of the Cum Laude Society. He went on to earn a B.S. in Economics and Business from Davidson College, where he was an Army ROTC student. After graduating, the Army deployed him as a Second Lieutenant to Korea, where he saw ferocious combat and was seriously wounded. He received the Purple Heart, Combat Infantry Badge and Korean Campaign ribbons. After returning home, he continued in the Army Reserves, earning several awards for meritorious service and a term at the Army’s Command and General Staff College in Leavenworth, Kansas. He retired in 1976 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. After recovering from his wounds in Korea, Thatcher began his life’s career as a self-proclaimed “banana peddler” at Banana Supply Co. Inc. He started at the bottom, working in the warehouse, driving delivery trucks and supervising the unloading of banana ships. He learned every facet of the business and ultimately became president. Under his direction, the company grew from its modest beginnings to an organization that operated a fleet of ships, trucks, rows of refrigerated warehouses, and branch offices in West Palm Beach, Orlando, and Bradenton, Fla., the first vertically integrated banana supply and distribution business in the country. After the death of his parents, John sought to honor their memory in a meaningful way. He created the Samuel E. & Mary W. Thatcher Foundation Inc., recognizing that he was truly blessed and that it was not only his duty, but a source of joy, to give to others. From that point to this day, the foundation supports schools, missionaries and missionary organizations, churches, community funds, youth groups, and other charities, locally and all over the world. An active volunteer and loyal supporter of Darlington, John often said that he could never give back as much to

the school as it had given to him. A Life Trustee, Visitor Emeritus, and Distinguished Alumnus, he established Darlington’s first endowed faculty chair, the Thatcher Chair of English, in honor of his parents in 1992. In 2009, he again honored his parents’ memory with a monumental gift to the Second Century Campaign, which resulted in the naming of Thatcher Hall (the current home of grades 3-8). In 2014, John made an additional campaign gift that established the Samuel E. and Mary W. Thatcher Master Teacher Fund and the Samuel E. and Mary W. Thatcher Faculty Development and Research Fund. These funds have since provided $280,000 in professional development opportunities to more than 80 teachers, administrators and staff members. “In every organization, there are those people who simply embody the values and the ideals of the institution; John Thatcher was that person for Darlington School,” said George Johnson (’54), who co-chaired the Second Century Campaign. “He demonstrated Wisdom more than Knowledge in important and critical decisions that were made during his past chairmanship of our Board of Trustees; he lived Service beyond Self in the ways that he served his profession, his church, his school and his alma mater; and he was one of the most honorable people I have ever met. He was a giving, dedicated humanitarian whose unselfish gifts have benefited organizations and individuals around the world.” Sadly, Thatcher passed away in October of 2019 after a long illness, but his generosity and love for Darlington will always be remembered. “John Thatcher’s service to Darlington is extraordinary and is felt by our students and faculty on a daily basis,” said Head of School Brent Bell. “His remarkable legacy will serve Darlington and those who knew him far beyond his years on Earth. His generosity can only be repaid by each of us giving our best every day. John Thatcher saw the greatest of success, while carrying himself with a humility and grace that is a model for us all.”

Hillary Thomas Remembering a friend

On Oct. 5, 2019, the Darlington Community experienced a huge loss when Hillary Paris Thomas, director of the Health Center, passed away from natural causes at the age of 48. “Hillary served Darlington with care and compassion for 17 years,” said Head of School Brent Bell. “In her role, she was an unsung hero – a vital part of the experience for many students.” Thomas grew up in Rome and graduated from Model High School in 1989. She was an R.N. with over 20 years of experience at Redmond Regional Medical Center and began serving as a nurse at Darlington in 2002. She earned her Associate of Science in Nursing from Floyd College as well as multiple certifications and was trained in both inpatient and outpatient care. Thomas was meticulous about everything, even from a young age, according to her mother, Sue Gribble. “She was very structured in her records and very careful,” said Gribble. “She

36

wanted everyone that worked for her to be careful. When she first went into nursing, she would call me on the way home and be afraid that she didn’t take care of something she was supposed to do. She’d always make sure everything was right. Even as a young girl, she was a perfectionist, but I think when she became a mother she had to let some of that go.” Her structure and perfectionism made her an important member of Darlington’s student life team, but it was her love for others that left the greatest impact. “Hillary worked behind the scenes and did some of the most important work a faculty member can do at Darlington. She cared, she listened, she helped,” said Matt Peer, director of enrollment management and former Upper School director. “She made sure our students were healthy enough to go to class, scheduled doctors’ appointments, and ensured prescriptions were filled. What students will remember most about Ms. Thomas is not the number of Band-Aids, Advil, or Tums she gave out over the past two decades. What we will remember most about her is the way she made you feel – like you were the most important thing in the world when you needed her help.”

Thomas also had a gift for finding the right nurses to serve with her in the Health Center, and Kim Hawkins is a prime example. They worked together for over 20 years at Redmond, and Thomas was persistent in her efforts to bring Hawkins to Darlington. “Hillary is absolutely the reason I am at Darlington today,” said Hawkins. “She originally asked me to fill in for 12 weeks. During that time, I fell in love with Darlington and the students, and when she asked me to come back I knew I had to say yes. Hillary was a great nurse and I loved working with her because she loved the students and loved Darlington. She always had a smile on her face and had the most contagious laugh. Even when she was mad, she was smiling about it.” Thomas’ mother agreed wholeheartedly that she had an easy-going nature. “I think that the last argument we ever really had was when she was around 14 years old,” said Gribble. “Those were the last cross words we had. She was never disrespectful and as an adult we never argued.” Thomas’ daughters attended Darlington, deepening her love for the school. Bethany Cagle (‘14) and Anna Kate Cagle (‘17) thrived on campus and are now continuing their education. Bethany graduated from Oxford College of Emory University and is now working on her medical degree at Creighton University in Omaha, Neb. Anna Kate is attending Mercer University.

Last winter, the Darlington Community planted a tree on campus in Hillary Thomas’ memory. Pictured at the dedication are Renate Starr, retired director of the Student Health Center; Kelly Paul, former Health Center director; Kim Hawkins, Health Center nurse; Gina Clevenger, nurse practitioner; James and Sue Gribble, Thomas’ stepfather and mother; Rus Paris, Thomas’ brother; Janice Hopkins, Thomas’ stepsister; and dear friend Heather McDurmon.
