Contents: Celebrating its 20th anniversary, Darlington School Soccer Academy capped off a milestone year with a standout performance on the national stage, advancing to the NPL National Semifinals this summer after a hard-fought 3-1 run against some of the nation’s best. Building on that success, the Soccer Academy has entered an exciting new era through a strategic partnership with Southern Soccer Academy Swarm FC, joining the MLS NEXT platform this fall to provide student-athletes with elite developmental and professional pathway opportunities.
The Darlington boys’ golf team waits casually, then anxiously, for the remainder of the teams to complete the final round of the state golf tournament. Suddenly, they realize they will participate in a two-team playoff to determine the state championship. It is not one player in the playoff, but the entire team. What pressure, and what an opportunity for each of these players! Fortunately for the Tigers, this storybook ending plays out as it should. The team comes through with clutch performances and wins the 2025 GHSA 1A-3A Private School State Championship.
The Darlington experience has always been much grander than the learning that occurs within the four walls of a classroom. Extracurricular offerings, like athletics, are often called the “front porch of the school” as they are the institution’s most visible and accessible points of connection for the broader public. Throughout our history, and throughout this magazine, you will see the impact that athletics makes on the individual student and our community as a whole. Every Darlington student who participates in athletics develops skills that will serve them throughout their lives.
The importance of athletics at Darlington is not in winning the state championship; rather it is in the effort, preparation, and camaraderie that creates the opportunity. We love to win,
and our golfers will carry the memory of that state championship forever. But we also love to compete, and it is in the competition that skills needed for a successful life are developed.
Watching our teams compete is one of my favorite parts of my job at Darlington. I love to see the students’ classmates cheering them on from the stands, their response to a coach’s encouragement and strategy, and teammates high-fiving or helping each other off the floor. Being a great teammate is Service Beyond Self. We are all better when we are on teams. The level of that team really doesn’t matter — simply being a good team member is what matters.
I had the pleasure of coaching the boys’ middle school basketball team for four years. Those boys played in front of big crowds, made amazing shots, and created powerful memories connected to setbacks and successes. They encouraged each other, critiqued each other, worked hard, and celebrated together. Some were best friends, and some had never met before the season started. They were a team, learning and revealing skills that they will take with them for life.
As the pages of this magazine unfold, you will clearly see that each journey and opportunity is different. As you read this issue of Darlington Magazine, I encourage you to relive your own athletic experiences, whether those be at Darlington or elsewhere, and savor the memories of teamwork, laughter, hard work, and competition.
Boys’ golf team earns state title
A unique team effort helped Darlington claim its eighth GHSA boys’ golf title at Twin City Country Club in Tennille, Ga., in May. The Tigers combined to shoot 26-over-par across eight rounds.
Seven golfers the Tigers brought to the Classes 1A Division I-3A tournament contributed to the win, which came down to a sudden-death playoff against Mount Paran.
“This is a special group of kids,” said head coach Jared Willerson. “Usually you’ve got one, two or — if you’re lucky — three kids that carry you. But this team is so deep. It was just a special day.”
After Darlington and Mount Paran finished their two rounds, they were stuck tied at 602 strokes. The two replayed the 10th hole, a 361-yard par-4. Each team’s six active golfers played the hole, with the top four scores from each team counting.
No. 1 Darlington golfer Blair Moseley (’25) birdied the hole and No. 2 Jack Webb (’25) shot par on what Willerson called “an all-world up-and-down.”
No. 4 Viet Nguyen (’27) doublebogeyed and No. 3 Grayson Clark (’26) bogeyed to bring Darlington’s combined score to 2-over compared to Mount Paran’s 1-over.
But No. 5 golfer Will Willerson (’27) shot even on his attempt to drop the double-bogey from scoring and put Darlington at par. No. 6 Jasper Stepp (’26) bogeyed the hole.
Moseley, Webb, Will Willerson and Clark/Stepp combined to shoot par on the hole, while Mount Paran could not drop its score below 1-over.
“We celebrated with a big dogpile on the green,” Jared Willerson said. “It was awesome.”
The title broke Darlington’s 21-year drought without a boys’ golf title. It won state back-to-back in 1993 and 1994; won three times in four years in 1975, 1977, and 1978; and won one-off titles in 1971 and 1987.
Twenty-one alumni representing seven states returned to campus to participate in the school’s Leadership Darlington program in March.
Members of the Class of 2025 include Camille (Temples) Abney (’13), Tony Cantrell (’74), Ben Cantrell (’08), Bess (Husser) Creech (’93), Trip Eberhart (’86), Elliott Echols (’08), Dr. Scott Edwards (’75), Russell Evans (’03), Payton (Payne) Guest (’10), Emily Hendrickson (’06), David Ivester (’84), Bedell James (’87), Hank Johnson (’99), Keara (Evans) Leonard (’16), Mary Austin Morgan (’13), Dr. Beau Pollard (’10), Sallie Ransom (’86), Caroline (Walker) Schley (’13), Wiley Sharp (’04), Dorothy Vincent (’07) and Lindsay (Evans) Willis (’12).
Over two days, participants obtained an integrated view of Darlington, including the internal and external forces that affect the school’s direction and the challenges it faces. They also experienced an interchange with senior
administrators and participated in discussions about the future.
The program featured a keynote address by Honorary Chair Whit Whitaker (’77, LD ’15), vice chair of Darlington’s Board of Trustees, former president of King University, and a retired U.S. Navy captain whose 25-year military career included decorated service in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps.
“I learned so much about Darlington and what goes on behind the scenes to ensure this place continues to thrive,” said Willis. “From the inspiring sessions to discussions with key leaders, I gained a deeper understanding of the dedication and vision driving Darlington forward. I left feeling more connected to the Darlington Community and excited about contributing to its future success.”

Crawford Brock (’72) was presented with the 2024 Distinguished Alumnus Award during Alumni Weekend last fall.
“No one is more supportive or has better memories of Darlington than my dad and, in my opinion, no one is more deserving of this award,” said his daughter, Laura Chandler, in her introduction during the ceremony.
Brock, a day student from the Class of 1972, built a successful career in luxury retail while demonstrating an unwavering commitment to community engagement. His office at Stanley Korshak, the luxury goods specialty department store in Dallas, Texas, he owned from 2002-2025 and now serves as president of, is adorned with memorabilia from his childhood in Rome, reflecting his deep appreciation for his roots.
“I appreciate you giving me this recognition,” said Brock. “It’s quite an honor and I’m very proud to have it. It’s been a great life. I’m proud of my family and I’m proud of the school.”
Past Alumni Council President Kristen Rachels (’05, LD ’16), at right, greets Emily Hendrickson (’06, LD ’25) upon her arrival for the Leadership Darlington retreat.
Brock has been actively involved in various initiatives for Darlington. His leadership of the Lakeside Scholarship Committee has raised over $1 million for the Class of 1972 Lakeside Scholarship Fund, and his consistent support of The Darlington Fund as a member of the J.J. Darlington Society exemplifies his commitment to the school and its future generations.
Alumni Council member Mark Rogers (’94, LD ’12) and Head of School Brent Bell present the Distinguished Alumnus Award to Crawford Brock (’72).
Head of School Brent Bell and a panel of students talk with alumni at the 2023 Alumni Weekend Tiger Talk in the Upper School Library, which has been transformed thanks to a meaningful planned gift from Elizabeth (Liza) Blackburn Phillips in memory of her son, William Thomas (’10). Liza’s husband, Doug Phillips, helped bring this vision to life after the library was relocated to Wilcox Hall in the space adjacent to The Cove. Thanks to the Phillips family’s support and dedication to the school, Liza and William’s legacies live on in a beautiful learning space where students and teachers will gather to connect, learn, and grow for generations to come. Retiring trustees included Scott Dozier (’73), Terri Pierce and Win Stewart (’97, LD ’12).
In Darlington’s production of the Disney film turned Tony-winning Broadway hit, “Newsies,” in February, Angeline Myrie (’25) portrays Medda Larkin, a big-voiced and bold vaudeville performer and theater owner who serves as a supporter and protector of the newsies, offering them her theater as a safe haven during their fight for justice. Sixty-three students representing grades 4-12 and eight faculty members contributed as actors, crew, student staff, builders, and designers, lending their talents to the show at Rome City Auditorium. “Newsies” is inspired by the real-life Newsboys’ Strike of 1899, when Kid Blink and David Simons led a band of orphan and runaway children on a two-week-long action against newspaper publishers Pulitzer and Hearst.
On a cold day in the Dodd Banquet Room, Christie Atkins was tutoring by a roaring fire when a group of students nearby caught her ear. They weren’t talking about sports or weekend plans — they were diving deep into a Shakespearean play, debating characters and plot points with genuine enthusiasm.
“That was the moment when I knew that I wanted my daughter, Leslie (’13), to attend Darlington,” Atkins said, and that I wanted a professional connection with the school.”
Two decades later, Atkins has retired from Darlington, leaving behind a legacy marked not only by her skill as a math teacher, but by her unwavering commitment to nurturing the whole student — mind, heart, and spirit.
Atkins began her teaching journey at Ezell-Harding Christian School just
outside of Nashville, where she taught eighth-grade math and Algebra 1 before settling into Geometry. After getting married and taking a break to be home with her children, she found her way back to the classroom through tutoring, first at Sylvan Learning Center and, later, out of her own home.
“I ran into [former Darlington math teacher] Patti Maffett, my old boss at Sylvan, and she told me Darlington needed more tutors,” Atkins recalled. That conversation led to her first role in 2004 as a tutor, before she joined the faculty full time six years later.
It was a perfect match. “Darlington values students’ gifts in multiple disciplines and provides a safe, homelike environment for them to grow in wisdom and knowledge,” she said.
Over the years, Atkins became a beloved figure among students, known for her nurturing demeanor and ability to connect. “When I started teaching, I was only a few years older than my students, but when I returned to fulltime teaching at Darlington, I was older and more mature,” she said. “I could now approach my students more in a maternal role, which is something I really enjoyed.”
Her students noticed. Many began calling her “Mama Atkins,” a nickname that filled her with joy. “Even now, when a student says I remind them of an aunt or a grandma, I feel honored,” she said. “It shows that they know I care about them.”
But it isn’t just the warmth and empathy that have defined her teaching. Atkins is creative and passionate about learning. She once led a group of Geometry students to design and sew a quilt [in collaboration with The Stitchery] that was gifted to a local veteran — a favorite project she says exemplifies what learning can be when it transcends the textbook.
Additionally, her deep understanding of learning differences stems from personal experience. As the mother of a son with autism, she once served as the Georgia State Representative for Unlocking Autism. “That experience opened me up to a whole
new understanding about learning differences, and this understanding has helped me tremendously as both a teacher and a special-needs mom,” she said.
Atkins’ efforts haven’t gone unnoticed. Over the years, she has received numerous accolades, including the Beachum Master Teacher Award and other honors voted on by students and parents. She was even inducted into the Cum Laude Society, a recognition she calls “the icing on the cake.”
But it’s never been about awards for Atkins. When she thinks back on her time at Darlington, she is most proud of the relationships she’s built. “It thrills me to hear from former students,” she said. “Some have asked me to help with their children with autism, others have reached out during crises, and some just want to say thank you.”
As she steps into retirement, Atkins looks forward to spending more time with her family, participating in church activities, creating crafts for local fairs, and diving into her ever-growing reading list.
But what will she miss most about Darlington? “The people,” she said without hesitation. “It may sound corny, but I will miss walking down the hall and hearing the sweet voices calling out, ‘Hi, Mrs. Atkins!’ I’ve been blessed to work with the best teachers on the planet. My math family here has taught me more than I ever thought I could know about technology, new strategies, and how to stay inspired.”
Looking back, her greatest joy has been witnessing her students’ growth. “Thanks to social media, I now get to see former students who have gone on to become doctors, attorneys, teachers, parents, and even grandparents,” she said. “It’s been a great joy to watch each journey unfold.”
And thanks to Christie Atkins, so many of those journeys started with a little more confidence, a little more kindness and a whole lot of math.
The month of May was a busy one for graduating seniors as they prepared to say farewell to Darlington. End-of-the-year events like Prom, Baccalaureate and Commencement became rites of passage, inspiring lifelong memories that will live in the hearts of each individual. Forever bonded as a group, our 108 new alumni have created their own legacy at Darlington – for no other class in school history will have the same complexion as the Class of 2025.
Among them are a handful of state champions and national team members, robotic engineers, servant leaders, a barrel racing ace, and an aspiring professional baker, to name a few. They hail from 14 countries and six states. Eighteen are four-year boarding students, and 14 are Dar Babies (having attended since pre-K or kindergarten). Fourteen have parents who are alumni, five have grandparents who are alumni and 38 in total have relatives that have graduated from Darlington. One is a fifth-generation Darlington graduate. They have earned $8.3 million in merit scholarships and have been accepted to 202 different colleges in 39 states, Washington, D.C., England, Scotland, Canada, and the Netherlands.
But the Class of 2025 is special for countless other reasons, and the memories they made here will never be forgotten. Best of luck, graduates, as you move on to the next phase of your lives, and remember that your Darlington family is always here for you!

What inspired you to pursue a career in education?
MJ: In my 20s, I was focused on a career in accounting and finance and even spent a few years in the dot-com world. But with each passing year, I felt a stronger calling to coach. While I originally considered pursuing college athletics, a series of incredible circumstances led me back to Darlington as a teacher and coach. That opportunity sparked a career in education that has now spanned 23 years.
What do you love about working in independent schools?
MJ: First, I want to thank all educators — public and private — for their dedication to young people. In independent schools, there is typically more freedom and flexibility for teachers and administrators to innovate, adapt, and implement best practices quickly. Smaller class sizes and lower student-to-teacher and coach-toathlete ratios allow for deeper relationships with students and families, which is at the heart of meaningful education.
What is the most meaningful part of your work with student-athletes and coaches?
MJ: I love helping individuals push beyond selfimposed limits. Student-athletes and coaches often carry internal doubts or barriers to success. The most rewarding part of my work is helping them break through those barriers and realize their full potential.
What are you most proud of accomplishing in your career?
MJ: While I’ve been fortunate to experience success on the field in terms of wins and championships, my greatest pride comes from
Darlington’s new athletic director, Mitch Jordan (’90), holds a B.S. in Management from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a M.A. in Educational Leadership from Gordon College. With 23 years of experience in education and coaching, he served as athletic director at Mount Paran Christian School for the last 17 years and also taught and coached at Darlington from 2002 to 2008.
the personal development of our student-athletes and the success of former assistant coaches and athletic directors who have gone on to lead programs of their own.
How does it feel to be back at Darlington?
MJ: It’s been incredible. There are many familiar faces, but I’ve also really enjoyed meeting and getting to know the current leadership team, teachers, coaches, and staff. It’s a talented and dedicated group, and I’m excited to collaborate and learn from them.
What does it mean to return in this particular role?
MJ: It’s a responsibility I take very seriously. I want to make a meaningful impact on as many students and staff as possible. Athletics is an extension of the classroom, and my goal is to use it as a vehicle to teach, mentor, and inspire.
How has Darlington shaped you?
MJ: I was incredibly fortunate to be shaped by outstanding coaches and teachers at Darlington. During my formative years, I was surrounded by role models like Jerry Sharp, Eddie Guth, Ed Dudley and Mike Muschamp. They helped form my values and coaching philosophy. One of my few regrets is not playing basketball for Coach Jim Van Es, who was an incredible teacher and coach.
What role did Darlington’s mission and values play in your decision to return?
MJ: Darlington’s mission — to empower students to learn with passion, act with integrity, and serve with respect — perfectly aligns with my own core values. At my previous school, we developed five foundational values for athletes and coaches: humility, integrity, passion, relentless effort, and a commitment to excellence. These mirror Darlington’s motto: Wisdom More Than
Knowledge. Service Beyond Self. Honor Above Everything. That alignment made the decision to return an easy one.
How do you define success for an athletic department — beyond wins and losses?
MJ: True success is reflected in the kind of people we help develop. Years from now, I want to see our alumni becoming great spouses, parents, professionals and leaders in their communities. That’s the true measure of a successful athletic program.
What are Darlington’s greatest athletic strengths? Where is there room for growth?
MJ: Darlington student-athletes have a strong work ethic, which has been clear from day one. Our facilities are outstanding, and the fact that many of our coaches are full-time staff members is a huge advantage — it builds deeper relationships and improves communication. As for growth, there’s always room to improve. We’ll continuously evaluate and evolve to meet the needs of our student-athletes and coaches.
How would you describe your leadership style?
MJ: I lead through collaboration. I believe in providing coaches with a framework of best practices while giving them the autonomy to lead their programs. I’m not a micromanager. Similarly, I want student-athletes to be empowered to make decisions, learn from mistakes and grow in a supportive environment.
How will you foster a positive, inclusive and competitive athletic culture?
MJ: It starts with modeling a positive attitude and high energy within the athletic department.
Building culture requires collaboration and buyin from all stakeholders — students, coaches, faculty, staff, and parents. When people feel heard and valued, they invest in the mission.
What role do character and sportsmanship play in your leadership?
MJ: They’re foundational. High character and good sportsmanship should be developed early. These qualities will serve our students for the rest of their lives. You can be a fierce competitor and still demonstrate respect, humility, and integrity. Those values are not mutually exclusive.
What do you expect from your coaching staff? How will you support their development?
MJ: Practices and games should be the highlight of each student-athlete’s day. I expect our coaches to bring high energy, deep knowledge and a sense of joy to their work. Kids respond to discipline and structure — but also to fun and care. I’ll support our coaches through ongoing professional development and a mindset of lifelong learning.
What makes a coach truly effective?
MJ: An effective coach is, above all, a great leader. I love Jim Collins’ concept of a “Level 5 Leader” — someone who combines humility with fierce resolve. Beyond that, great coaches are organized, passionate, knowledgeable and genuinely invested in their players’ well-being.
What stands out about Darlington’s teaching and learning environment?
MJ: Darlington is one of the top schools in the country. Our faculty is deeply committed to academic excellence. Students who graduate from Darlington are more than prepared for the rigor of college and life beyond.
How do you balance academics and athletics for student-athletes?
MJ: Academic excellence always comes first. Student-athletes should embrace the challenge of excelling in both areas. That struggle builds resilience. Strong relationships between coaches and faculty are key to developing student-athletes.
What advice would you give students pursuing college athletics?
MJ: Focus on the process. There are no shortcuts. Train with purpose, work hard in the classroom
and lead with character. College recruiters value student-athletes who demonstrate discipline, resilience and academic strength. Darlington’s reputation opens doors, but it’s your consistent effort that will separate you.
How can athletics enhance a student’s overall experience at Darlington?
MJ: Athletics is a powerful tool for growth. Coaches have a chance to influence students in profound ways. High school sports are a oncein-a-lifetime experience — one filled with joy, challenge and life-shaping moments. We want every student to walk away with memories and lessons that last a lifetime.
What are some short-term goals you’re excited about this year?
MJ: One key initiative is providing proper nutrition for all student-athletes before and after workouts. Another is implementing a leadership council, starting with team captains, with the goal of eventually offering leadership training to full teams.
Are there any new programs or initiatives you’re looking to explore?
MJ: We want to develop student-athletes holistically — physically, mentally and emotionally. We’re exploring how to integrate technology and evidence-based practices to optimize performance and well-being.
How will you engage alumni, parents, and supporters in the athletic program?
MJ: We want our broader community to be actively involved — at games, practices and
events. We’re planning annual traditions like a golf tournament and opportunities for alumni to speak to teams and mentor students. Celebrating the legacy of past athletes is vital to building pride and continuity.
What legacy do you hope to leave?
MJ: That I lived out the core values I preached. One of my favorite books is “Legacy” by James Kerr, about the New Zealand All Blacks. One of their principles is “Leave the jersey better than you found it.” I hope people say I gave 100% every day and made Darlington Athletics better.
What are your biggest hopes for the future of the program?
MJ: That every student-athlete grows — whether in confidence, skill, leadership or character. If we can positively shape lives through sport, we’ll have accomplished something truly meaningful.
Favorite sport to watch?
MJ: Mixed Martial Arts. I became a fan during COVID — it was the only sport still going!
Most influential coach or mentor?
MJ: Ed Dudley, Eddie Guth and Jerry Sharp
One thing most people don’t know about you?
MJ: I’m an avid reader.
If not athletics, what would you be doing?
MJ: Executive coaching
From the first whistle to the final buzzer, Darlington Athletics has always been about more than wins and losses – it’s about building confidence, character, and skills that endure. In this special feature, we’re spotlighting just a few of the many alumni who have carried those lessons into the world. From pro athletes and coaches to community leaders, these Alumni All-Stars are breaking records, building programs, and mentoring the next generation, all while carrying the spirit of Darlington Athletics with them. The grit, teamwork, and love of the game forged on our fields, courts, and tracks continues to fuel their success far beyond campus.
Robert Muschamp (’15) has quickly climbed the coaching ranks to become defensive quality control coach for the Los Angeles Chargers. A former walkon tight end at Auburn University who earned a scholarship by his senior year, Muschamp began coaching as a graduate assistant at Tennessee before joining the University of Georgia’s staff, helping the Bulldogs secure back-to-back National Championships. He entered the NFL in 2023 with the Chargers and now works closely with the defensive backs. The Rome native’s journey from walk-on to NFL coach reflects grit, persistence and a deep love for the game.
Gordon Smith (’71), a standout tennis player at Darlington and the University of Georgia, is the longest-serving CEO and executive director in United States Tennis Association history, leading the organization from 2007-2020 through unprecedented growth. Under his leadership, the USTA launched Net Generation, overhauled its digital platforms, expanded the U.S. Open and completed its two largest-ever infrastructure projects. Now retired, Smith works as a sports and tennis industry consultant.
Dr. Monica L’Esperance’s (’95) executive coaching expertise extends across industries and into the realm of professional sports. Her doctoral research explored the benefits of gender-inclusive executive leadership teams in male professional leagues, and she is currently partnering with a major university to launch a graduate-level leadership program for sports and entertainment management. A former Darlington boarding student and track athlete, L’Esperance credits the lessons of discipline, resilience, and teamwork learned on the track with fueling her coaching philosophy today — helping executives and teams thrive under pressure with commitment, clarity, and connection.
Dr. Monica L’Esperance (’95) attends an event for She’s Got Time, a professional organization dedicated to women building careers across sports, entertainment and adjacent industries.
Chase Pittman (’17) has built a career behind the scenes of college athletics, helping programs shine on some of the biggest stages in sports. After internships with the Greenville Swamp Rabbits and Atlanta Motor Speedway, he launched his career at Georgia State and later Pepperdine, where he helped host the NCAA Men’s Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight. He went on to become manager of season tickets and annual giving at High Point University, where he played a role in the Panthers’ first NCAA Tournament appearance, before moving to his current position as ticket sales account executive for MLB's Tampa Bay Rays. A three-sport athlete at Darlington, he credits the lessons learned from coaches and teammates with fueling his passion for athletics.
Molly (Kelly) Steeves (’98, LD ’12),
Prior to her career in real estate, Molly (Kelly) Steeves (’98, LD ’12) orchestrated elite sporting experiences worldwide, working with Stan Smith Events from 2007 to 2022. As an event manager, she planned and executed highprofile events for C-suite executives at premier sporting events, including Wimbledon, the U.S. Open, FIFA World Cups, Olympic Games, Rugby World Cups and Super Bowls. A fouryear varsity tennis player at Hollins University, Steeves credits her time on the court and her involvement in cheerleading at Darlington with instilling the discipline and teamwork that propelled her into a distinguished career in sports event management.
Grace Welborn (’15) turned her lifelong passion for riding into a successful career as a professional equestrian and trainer. After competing on Auburn’s IHSA Equestrian Team and earning a business degree with a concentration in marketing, she realized her heart belonged in the arena, not an office. Welborn spent several years as a professional rider and assistant trainer in Alpharetta, Ga., before returning home in 2023 to launch Double W Farms in Rome with her sister, Molly (’22). Today, she trains riders and horses on the competitive hunter-jumper A circuit.
Fatema (Bandukwala) Salehbhai (’06, LD ’13) is paying forward the lessons she learned as a Darlington student-athlete through her volunteer work with Kilometer Kids, an Atlanta Track Club program that teaches elementary students goal setting, healthy habits and community building through running. A former cross country and track captain, Salehbhai credits her Darlington coaches Rob Davis, Ken Wempe, Lindsay Bergen, Jason Turner, and Shana (Ely) Pardue (’97) with instilling motivation, confidence, and leadership skills that shaped her success on and off the track. Today, she still enjoys running while inspiring the next generation to set goals and find joy in the sport.
Taylor Wynn (’10) has built a standout career in golf, serving as head golf professional at Idle Hour Club in Macon, Ga., and as an at-large director on the Georgia PGA South Chapter Board. A four-year letterman at LaGrange College, his passion for the game was ignited at Darlington, where a talented team, lifelong friendships, and access to Coosa Country Club inspired him to compete at the collegiate level and ultimately pursue his PGA credentials. Today, he’s a rising leader in Georgia’s golf community, mentoring players and growing the game he’s loved since his Darlington days.
Ryland Scott (’23) is making his mark in sports media as a photographer and graphic designer for TCU Athletics and the Big 12. He travels nationwide covering Texas Christian University’s reigning national champion men’s tennis team, Big 12 championships and high-profile events like the ATP 500 Dallas Open. Scott’s work has also led him to shoot for visiting programs like Kansas baseball and Clemson basketball, building connections with top athletes across pro and collegiate sports. A former Darlington soccer and football player and founder of the @darlingtonathletics student-run athletics account on Instagram, the college junior credits his time on the field with inspiring his passion for storytelling through athletics.
Chris Jefts (’84, LD ’15) parlayed a professional baseball career with the Chicago White Sox and nearly a decade in scouting for the Cleveland Indians (now known as the Cleveland Guardians) and coaching at the University of Georgia into a leadership role in higher education. He has served as regional director of development and alumni relations at the University of Georgia since 2011, fostering alumni and donor engagement across the state. Jefts credits his time at Darlington and the mentorship of coaches like Jim Van Es with shaping the discipline and leadership that have guided his career.
Darlington Soccer Academy alum Jane Campbell (’13), now a star goalkeeper for the Houston Dash, was named National Women’s Soccer League Goalkeeper of the Year in 2023. A Stanford standout and 2017 NWSL draft pick, she debuted with the U.S. Women’s National Team that same year and served as an Olympic alternate in 2020 and 2024. At 17, Campbell became the youngest goalkeeper ever invited to a senior national training camp and earned national honors — including Sports Illustrated “Game-Changer” and NSCAA Player of the Year — before graduating high school.
Caroline (Peek) Smith (’91) is a three-time NCAA All-American who turned a standout golf career into eight seasons on the LPGA and European Tours. She later served as director of athletics at Fountain Valley School and chaired the Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation Authority, continuing to champion youth sports. A 17-time varsity letterwinner at Darlington, Smith credits her time on campus with instilling the discipline and gratitude that fueled her success. She remains a fierce competitor, recently teeing it up in the 7th U.S. Senior Women’s Open.

When Vicki Vincent walked out of her office at Darlington’s Home-on-the-Hill for the last time this summer, she wasn’t just closing the door on a job — she was stepping away from a place that had shaped her personal and professional life for more than two decades.
Over the course of 23 years, spread across three different chapters, Vincent became one of the school’s most enduring and trusted voices — especially for Darlington’s alumni. As director of alumni relations, she served as the point person for thousands of graduates, helping them stay connected not just to each other, but to the place that launched them.
“I never planned on working in education, and certainly not for this long,” she said, “but Darlington has a way of drawing you in — through the people, the students, the mission. Once you’re a part of it, it’s hard to imagine being anywhere else.”
Vincent’s path to Darlington wasn’t direct, but it was destined. A University of Georgia graduate with a degree in public relations and a minor in political science, she initially aimed for a career in Washington, D.C., inspired by a summer internship on Capitol Hill. Though politics didn’t pan out, her career took root in finance, corporate leadership and eventually nonprofit advancement — skills she would later bring to her work at Darlington.
She first arrived in 1995 when her husband, Jim, accepted a job in Rome. Their two oldest daughters enrolled at Darlington, and Vicki was hired as a gift accountant. Though the family moved to Atlanta a year later, it wouldn’t be her last time on campus.
“Every time life brought us back to Northwest Georgia, Darlington pulled me right back in,” she said with a smile. “I’ve said it before, and I still mean it — Darlington just gets into your heart. I never imagined how much it would shape my life.”
And so it did — twice more, in fact. In 2000, she returned to work in development services for three years before her family relocated to Vienna, Va., and in 2006, she came back once again, this time to stay. Over the next 17 years, Vincent would become the heart of Darlington’s alumni network, rising from class agent officer to director of alumni relations and becoming the school’s steady link between past and present.
“It’s been such a joy to work with the Darlington product — our alumni,” she said. “Watching students grow into adults, reconnecting graduates with one another, celebrating the impact this school has had on their lives — it’s been the most rewarding work I could imagine.”
Vincent didn’t just maintain relationships — she built them, expanded them, and strengthened them through every event, phone call, and conversation. One of her proudest accomplishments has been developing Leadership Darlington, a program that fosters alumni engagement and helps shape future stewards of the school.
“The impact it’s had is more than I ever dreamed,” she said. “Seeing alumni step forward and give back in their own way — that’s been a gift.”
But her greatest joy came in the everyday moments — swapping stories at Alumni Weekend, catching up with former students in cities across the country, and watching Darlington graduates find their way in the world.
“The relationships are what I’ll miss most,” she said. “This work was never about numbers or spreadsheets. It was about people.”
Darlington’s impact on the Vincent family wasn’t limited to Vicki’s career — it’s also the place where her daughters, Dottie (’07, LD ’25), Abby (’09, LD ’19), and Jamie (’10), were shaped and supported during their formative years.
“Each of them found something unique here,” she said. “Dottie was inspired by her teachers to become an educator. Abby found her home in the arts, and Jamie blossomed on stage and in her friendships. The foundation they received at Darlington has carried them through everything since.”
Vincent herself was shaped by the colleagues she came to know and admire — from legendary faculty members to dedicated advancement professionals and four different heads of school.
“I’ve been blessed to work with truly incredible people,” she said. “Many of them became not just colleagues, but lifelong friends.”
Now retired, Vincent is spending more time with her family — a quieter pace after years spent planning events, building relationships, and fielding calls and emails from alumni across the country and the world. But her work doesn’t disappear with her departure.
The programs she helped shape, the alumni she brought back into the fold, and the culture of connection she fostered will carry on. And for many in the Darlington Community, hearing her name will always bring to mind a conversation, a laugh, or a handwritten note that made them feel remembered.

When Lee Hanson (’80) and his wife, Erin, set out to solve a problem in sports safety, they weren’t aiming to change the culture of football. They simply saw a risk – one their own son faced when he began playing the game – and knew they had the expertise to do something about it.
Enter the Guardian Cap, a lightweight, impact-reducing shell that fits over a football helmet.
Today, their product is mandated by the NFL in practices, permitted in games, and used by all 32 NFL teams as well as 23 of the top 25 college football programs and thousands of high schools and youth leagues around the country. It reduces impact forces by up to 33% and has helped the NFL record a 17-year low in practice concussions.
The son of a barber and a school teacher, Hanson enrolled at Darlington as a seventh-grader in 1974, where he was known for being studious and curious, especially in science and math. He would go on to graduate from Georgia Tech with a degree in chemical engineering and, ultimately, build a career — and a mission — around solving problems that others overlooked.
For years, he worked in corporate America for chemical companies like Unocal and Ciba-Geigy, eventually founding The Hanson Group with Erin in 1996. From a solo operation to a thriving materials science firm working with giants like Boeing, Dow, and 3M, The Hanson Group made its name through innovation — developing everything from leading golf ball technology for Maxfli, Wilson, and Vice, to self-sealing fuel tanks and coatings for aerospace and military use.
But in 2010, a new challenge would ultimately shift the course of the Hansons’ lives. A helmet company approached The Hanson Group for help creating a flexible helmet. Lee and Erin had the solution, but the NFL wasn’t ready. Still, the Hansons were undeterred.
“We knew all too well the risk of collision sports — a player’s risk of CTE [chronic traumatic encephalopathy] doubles every 2.6 years they play,” said Hanson. “We set out to make a one-sizefits-all, inexpensive solution to retrofit every existing helmet out there.”
At first, resistance was fierce.
“There was an outcry of, ‘Someone needs to do something,’” Hanson said. “We created the Guardian Cap, and the response was, ‘Yeah, not that.’ When no one wanted it, we knew that we had no choice but to do it ourselves.
Guardian was a calling with the mission of providing athletes with the equipment we feel they deserve.”
Schools using the Guardian Cap reported fewer concussions, fewer hand injuries and players feeling better after practice. One by one, programs began to adopt the technology. The University of South Carolina gave it a shot. Then UGA. Then Alabama.
And then, in 2020, the NFL took notice.
The Guardian Cap went on to win the NFL’s HeadHealthTECH Challenge in 2017, validating its effectiveness. By 2022, the league had mandated its use in practice. Concussions in those mandated positions dropped by 52%.
“It’s a simple tool, but maximizes Newton’s physics to reduce impact and forces to the head,” Hanson explained, citing the Guardian Cap’s multi-layered design, friction-reducing materials, and cooling effects.
The Guardian name is now synonymous with sports safety. Beyond football, Guardian has developed softshell headbands for soccer, flag football, cheer, and rugby, as well as PEARL lacrosse balls and environmentally friendly turf infill. Their newest innovation, a hydraulic chinstrap developed with Stanford engineers, reduces facemask impact by 35%.
Now a father of five and grandfather of 10, Hanson lives just a mile from his children and grandchildren in Berkeley Lake, Ga. Three of his children and two sons-in-law work at Guardian. He and Erin share a 90,000-square-foot facility — Hanson Group on one side, run by Lee, and Guardian Sports on the other, run by Erin — with a warehouse in between.
“We spend all day going back and forth,” he laughed.
The road hasn’t been easy. Changing the culture of a tradition-bound sport takes grit and patience. “If you are going to try to make a paradigm shift, be prepared for the long haul,” he said. “It takes a lot of determination not to give up if you know that you are doing the right thing.”
As the Hansons continue to innovate across multiple sports and industries, at its core, their mission is always the same: Find the problem, solve it and make a difference.
It’s a mindset that Hanson traces back to his time at Darlington — where high standards, hard work and accountability were part of the daily routine.
“In the end, we just want to build things that help people,” he said. “That’s what keeps us going.”

When Sallie Ransom (’86, LD ’25) looks back on her Darlington days, it’s not just the classes or the campus she remembers most — it’s the shared experiences. Whether it was sprinting up and down the basketball court with a team that went 29-1, or trading stories around a campfire decades later with friends at Camp Seafarer, Ransom’s life has been shaped by the power of community — and it all started at Darlington.
“My most memorable shared experience at Darlington was as a team member on the women’s basketball team,” she said. “The grit, accomplishment and challenge I experienced for four years will never leave me — especially being a part of that incredible 29-1 team.”
Sallie wasn’t just a student at Darlington — she was part of a Ransom family legacy. She first stepped on campus as an infant when her father taught there, and returned as a student in middle school, eventually graduating as a proud member of the Class of 1986. Twenty members of the Ransom family have attended Darlington so far, including her cousin, Miley James (’25), who just graduated in May. The school is woven into the fabric of her family history and continues to play a role today.
“I remember seeing my cousins, Bedell James (’87, LD ’25) and Ingram (James) Link (’84), in the halls when I was a student,” said Ransom. “And years later, my cousin, Bess (Husser) Creech (’93, LD ’25), would be sitting in the stands cheering me on during my basketball games. That sense of continuity and shared tradition is so powerful.”
Fast forward to today, and Ransom is still surrounded by the spirit of youth development, teamwork, and leadership, just in a different setting. As vice

president of overnight camping for the YMCA of the Triangle, she now leads strategic planning and operations for three major camps: Sea Gull, Seafarer and Kanata, serving more than 8,000 campers each summer.
If you’re wondering how a marketing major from Auburn University ended up devoting three decades of her life to camping and recreation, the answer circles back once again to Darlington.
“I never would have found camp if it wasn’t for Darlington,” she said. “Three of my teachers, Bill Ellis, Mark Tayloe and Billy Caldwell, worked at Camp Sea Gull during the summers. They introduced my cousin, Ingram, to the camps, and then Ingram told me what I was going to do after my freshman year at Auburn — work at Camp Seafarer. That was the start of it all.”
That first summer at Seafarer was a revelation. “I walked into the dining hall and people were standing on their benches, singing and laughing,” she recalled. “It was wild. It was wild and wonderful. I didn’t fully get the magic until about five weeks in, but when I did, it never left.”
Today, Ransom is not just a part of the Sea Gull, Seafarer and Kanata communities — she’s a leader helping shape their futures. These three camps are positioned to do transformational work, and Ransom's passion to ensure
their relevance and strength for the next generation is stronger than ever.
For current Darlington students considering careers in athletics, recreation or youth development, she has simple but heartfelt advice: Do it.
“It’s hard work where you will learn more about yourself than you ever imagined,” she said. “You are putting yourself into a space that’s both complex and transformational. This work is a lifestyle. Not a job.”
And while Ransom didn’t major in recreation, her path was shaped by the experiences and people that influenced her early on — many of them at Darlington.
“If you love kids and want to be an influencer on their growth and development, then this is the path, second to being a teacher at Darlington, of course,” she said.
Kids, she believes, need these experiences more than ever. “They need to be outdoors and away from their phones,” she said. “They need to try and to fail. They need to see themselves in a positive light and believe they can accomplish anything.”
And thanks to Sallie Ransom, thousands of them get that chance every summer.

When Tate Ratledge (’20) walked onto the Darlington campus as a seventh-grader, he was still growing into his frame, still figuring out who he was. But what he did know, even then, was that he had big goals and a strong support system.
His parents had made the decision to enroll him at Darlington for its academic rigor, but as fate would have it, Darlington would be where his story as an elite athlete — and as a young man — would begin to take shape.
“My parents wanted what was best for me academically and decided Darlington was the best fit,” Tate said. That decision would set the foundation for not just his football career, but for the life he would build both on and off the field.
Today, Ratledge is a household name for college football fans. After a standout career at the University of Georgia, where he won back-to-back National Championships with the Bulldogs, he heard his name called in the second
round of the 2025 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions.
But before the roaring football stadiums and primetime games, it all started at Darlington.
For Ratledge, the structure and support at Darlington were as critical as the training. “Darlington more than prepared me academically for college,” he said. “It helped me learn time management and how to balance school and athletics.”
It wasn’t just about hitting the books or blocking defenders. It was about learning how to be accountable, how to show up for teammates and teachers alike, and how to represent himself — and his school — with pride. “I think Darlington taught me how to be accountable and make the most out of my time,” he said. “You’re held accountable in so many aspects at Darlington, whether it be in the classroom or on a field, that it helped translate over to UGA.”
Among the many coaches who left an impression on him, Ratledge points first to Coach Tommy Atha. “Coach Atha had the biggest impact on me and my development,” he said. “He pushed me on the field, but also made sure I was
getting done what needed to be done in the classroom. Coach Kevin Hunt also had a huge impact on me. He helped me grow as a person as well as an athlete.” Those lessons — about work ethic, time management and carrying oneself with integrity — would go on to shape how he handled the next level of competition.
After a stellar high school career, Ratledge had plenty of college offers. The recruiting process was intense, but ultimately, Georgia felt like the right fit. It’s not hard to see why. The Bulldogs are a national powerhouse, and Ratledge was eager to compete at the highest level.
But even for a top high school lineman, the jump to the SEC was a wake-up call. “I think the speed of the game was the biggest difference,” he said. “I’m still playing the same game, but just at a much faster pace.”
Ratledge rose to the challenge.
After redshirting part of his early career and battling a foot injury that sidelined him during Georgia’s 2021 National Championship run, he came back strong. In 2022 and 2023, he became a mainstay on the offensive line, starting in nearly every game. He played a key role in helping Georgia secure the SEC title and another National Championship in 2022.
“The first National Championship was great, of course, especially since we hadn’t won in so long,” he said.
“But the second one meant more to me personally since I played that year. After overcoming my injury after the first one, it felt so special to win another.”
Off the field, he remained just as focused. In December 2024, he earned his B.S. in Education with a concentration in Sport Management.
This past spring, Ratledge’s lifelong dream came true.
“It was just surreal,” he said. “Actually hearing my name on the TV and realizing that my hard work has paid off meant a lot.”
When they called his name, Ratledge was surrounded by family and friends, including his former Darlington Tigers coach. “Coach Atha was actually with me in Athens, Ga., when I was drafted, which meant so much to me,” he said. “Hearing from my former coaches has been so cool because they are a huge part of my journey and I would not be here without them. It means a lot to me.”
Atha was also there to see Ratledge start in his first game with Detroit, a preseason matchup on Aug. 8 versus the Atlanta Falcons that ended in a 17-10 victory for the Lions.
As he continues his rookie season, Ratledge is staying focused — mentally, physically and emotionally. In late August, he was one of 10 offensive linemen to make the Lions’ initial roster.
“I am working out every day as well as doing a lot of recovery to make sure my body is as healthy as it can be,” he said. “I watch a lot of film as well to help myself be as prepared as I can be. Emotionally, I’m just taking it all in and trying to enjoy the process.”
He’s also learning from his new coaches and teammates. “The Lions have been good the last few years, so getting to learn from the coaches as well as teammates is exciting to me,” he said.
But Ratledge’s Darlington story isn’t just one of athletic achievement — it’s also a love story.
He met Annabelle Braden (’19) in middle school. They were part of the same friend group, but things didn’t become romantic until a few years later.
“She was a junior and I was a sophomore when we started dating,” he recalled.
Their relationship weathered the demands of high school athletics, long SEC football seasons, injuries, wins and everything in between. Through it all, Braden has been a steady presence.
“She’s seen me at my lowest and seen me at my highest, and has been by my side through all of it,” said Ratledge.
Braden carved out a path of her own at the University of Georgia, graduating with a B.S. in Education with a concentration in Sport Management in spring 2024. “She spent all four years working in the football team’s recruiting department, a role she absolutely loved,” said Ratledge. “It’s cool because we got to watch each other grow so much throughout high school and college.”
Earlier this year, the couple took their next step together. “I decided when I was training in Dallas this offseason to start planning a proposal,” he said. With the help of Annabelle’s friends and a trusted jeweler, he picked out the perfect ring and set the plan in motion.
Their shared Darlington roots remain a part of their bond. “We learned how to be individuals while at Darlington, while also maintaining our relationship as a couple,” said Ratledge. “We learned so many life lessons from different teachers
and coaches that we both bring to the relationship.”
Excited for their future together, Ratledge and Braden are staying very busy, planning a wedding and settling into their new life in Michigan.
Looking back on the road from Darlington to the NFL, Ratledge remains grounded. When asked what advice he would give to student-athletes dreaming of playing in college or the pros, his answer is simple: “Work hard. Seems typical to say but, if anything, work hard for yourself.”
And if his story says anything, it’s that hard work — and heart — really can take you places.
Ratledge still carries with him the values instilled at Darlington: integrity, discipline and pride in what you represent. “I learned to wear whatever is on my chest with pride,” he said.
“Whether it be the Darlington Crest or Georgia G, I know I am representing that school as well as myself and have to do my best.”
That crest, that “G,” and now the Detroit Lion — they’ve all been part of his journey. But at the center of it all is the work he put in, the community that supported him, and a high school sweetheart-turned-fiancée who’s been by his side every step of the way.
Darlington School will retire Tate Ratledge's (’20) Tigers football jersey at the Alumni Weekend Homecoming Game on Oct. 24, 2025.
Rosalee Kelley (’18) catches up with Hanna Jon Lewis (’16) at the Darlington Connects Atlanta event last spring.
Mitch Crego inked an exclusive global publishing agreement with Universal Music Publishing Group (UMPG), marking a significant milestone in his music career. The news was featured in a press release by MusicRow, a prominent Nashvillebased music industry publication. Mitch expressed his gratitude toward Darlington for the role it played in paving his career path. He fondly recalled how influential his teachers and classes were in shaping his journey, contributing to his success as an artist.

Kathryn Chunn has been published as the first author in IEEE Transactions on Professional Communication, a leading peerreviewed journal that advances knowledge in the theory, practice, and teaching of professional communication across engineering, technical, and scientific contexts. Her article, titled "Using UX and LXD to Analyze Constructivism in Technical Communication Textbook Design," explores how both learners and instructors can benefit from constructivist approaches to textbook design. Kathryn began her research journey in 2022 during a visual design course, when she noticed that the textbook being used did not follow the very design principles it aimed to teach. This observation led her to partner with Mercer University professor Dr. Bremen Vance to formally investigate textbook design through the lens of User Experience (UX) and Learning Experience Design (LXD). Published by the IEEE Professional Communication Society, IEEE Transactions on Professional Communication is recognized globally for its rigorous editorial standards and its influence in shaping communication practices in industry, academia, and government. The IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) is the world’s largest technical professional organization, dedicated to advancing technology for the benefit of humanity. This publication marks a significant milestone in Kathryn’s career and underscores her commitment to improving educational tools and advancing effective communication in complex professional environments.

“Playing football at The College of Wooster was important in leading me to coaching and teaching. I’ve always loved football, but at the college level, the game takes a huge jump in both speed and knowledge. I’m blessed to have played at Darlington under some of the greatest coaches and be able to come back and work alongside them. I hope I can help mold and impact these young athletes into great young people in the same way I was. I have been in my football players’ exact shoes at Darlington; I have been in the same locker rooms, classrooms, and fields; and I have seen what it takes to reach the next level and how to be successful. I hope they can relate to me and learn from me in their journey as a student-athlete.”

“I started playing soccer as I was learning to walk and have been playing ever since. Athletics is more than just a hobby to me; it’s my passion and a way of life. Throughout my four years playing for Darlington School Soccer Academy, I got to visit many colleges and states while making unforgettable memories traveling and playing across the U.S. with some of my closest friends. My dream is to go pro, so hopefully sports will remain a big part of my life in the future but if not, the memories and lessons I’ve learned from being an athlete will forever remain with me.”

“Athletics shaped my time at Darlington in such a positive way. It gave me structure, taught me time management, and pushed me to stay motivated in both academics and competition. I also got to represent my school while doing something I love, which gave me a sense of pride and purpose. I’m excited to be part of a collegiate team, compete at the next level against talented athletes from across the United States, and see how far my hard work can take me. I’m also looking forward to the new experiences, travel and friendships that come with college athletics.”

“Exercising, whether in an individual or team setting, has always been a safe space for me. Specifically, I think being a part of a team sport allows you to be in a setting where everyone is trying to better themselves in one way or another. Playing lacrosse at Oglethorpe University provided me with first-hand experience to be able to explain the why behind certain things – why it’s important to do well academically; why this certain drill is important to the game; or why being there for your teammate, on and off the field, is an integral part of being a student-athlete. The opportunity to share my knowledge and passion for lacrosse is something very special, and I'm excited to see the girls thrive!”

“Sports and athletics, specifically softball, are where I’ve always felt most confident and at home. Playing softball for the University of Georgia grew my knowledge of the game exponentially, so that helps me as a coach as far as being able to teach the game and develop players at any level. I want our student-athletes to have the same opportunities to experience what I did through sports, and I’ll always do my best to create an environment where they feel empowered to push themselves and their teammates to be their best and make the best out of their opportunities every day.”

“To me, athletics is about more than just the sport itself – it’s where I’ve learned the value of discipline, teamwork and pushing myself to be my best self. As a student, I cheered at Darlington and competed for 10 years with Hotshots Allstars of Rome and Stingrays Allstars of Marietta. That experience shaped so much of who I am. Getting to come full circle and invest in the student-athletes on the cheerleading team as a coach is incredibly special. I love getting to help them grow – not just as athletes, but as people, and I hope they always know that I’m in their corner, no matter what.”

“Playing sports at Darlington was my main avenue to making friends, but it also helped me stay successful in the classroom by having something other than just school to focus on. Sports showed me that failure isn’t always the end, but a learning curve, and that you don’t magically become good at something. It takes hard work and effort. I am excited to be around other athletes with the same intent and commitment as me and to be able to travel to play different teams around the country.”

“To me, athletics is about building relationships that last and shaping who you are. Being part of it gives you a real sense of belonging and the feeling that you’re working toward something bigger than yourself. Watching my basketball girls go beyond what they think they can do is the best reward. They work incredibly hard and give everything they have to the game, and I’m forever grateful to be part of it.”

“Athletics is a space for improvement, not just in the game, but in life. Being an athlete has shifted my perspective so that I’m always organized and focused on my game. It’s a space where I’m allowed to learn and grow. I’m excited to play at Princeton where I will get to meet new people who play at a more competitive level. This will help me improve my game while making new connections.”

John Hine (’53) smiled from ear to ear when he learned that the president of Georgia Tech would be speaking at the 2023 Class of 1953 Lectureship – an event funded by his graduating class in honor of their 50th reunion. That moment, simple as it was, captured so much about who he was: a man deeply rooted in tradition; endlessly proud of his alma mater; and always looking for ways to connect people, purpose, and education.
On Sept. 16 of last year, the Darlington Community lost not just a loyal alumnus, but a true pillar of service, leadership and generosity. Hine, Darlington’s 2009 Distinguished Alumnus, passed away at the age of 89, leaving behind a legacy built not only on professional accomplishment, but on a deep love for his school, his hometown, and a lifetime of service.
If you had the good fortune to meet Hine, you probably remember how he made you feel — welcomed, seen and valued.
“He was one of the first people I met during the interview process,” said Head of School Brent Bell. “In every encounter that followed, he was always a consummate gentleman, extending a hand in friendship and never failing to want to know how I was doing. When I think about what it means to live a life of wisdom, service and honor, I will always think of John. He loved Darlington, and we remain grateful for his unwavering commitment to the school."
Hine lived his life with purpose, but never with fanfare. A proud member of the Class of 1953, he remained deeply involved with Darlington across the decades, serving as a Life Trustee, class agent, and a dedicated member of both the J.J. Darlington Society and the J. Daniel Hanks Sr. (’27) Heritage Society His ties to the school were not nostalgic — they were active, passionate and rooted in a genuine desire to help Darlington thrive.
Professionally, Hine left a significant mark on the textile industry. After graduating from Georgia Tech and serving two years active duty as an officer in the U.S. Army, he worked at Trend Industries as a textile engineer. In 1973, he left Trend to establish Pharr Yarns of Georgia, where he served as executive vice president and as president for 23 years.
Hine held leadership roles with the Georgia Textile Manufacturers Association, the American Yarn Spinners Association and the Textile Education Foundation. But it wasn’t his titles that mattered — it was the way he brought people together, advocated
for progress, and always carried himself with the same steady integrity he was known for in every area of his life. Hine’s impact rippled through his entire community. He was the kind of person who didn’t just join civic organizations; he helped lead them forward. He served on the boards of the Boys & Girls Club, Coosa Valley Fair Association, Darlington School, the Exchange Club, the Exchange Club Family Resource Center, Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce, Habitat for Humanity, the Open Door Children’s Home, and the United Way, among others. He also chaired the board of Citizen’s First Bank and was a devoted member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. His commitment wasn’t symbolic — it was hands-on, heartfelt and sustained over a lifetime.
His many contributions did not go unnoticed. Hine was honored with the Boys & Girls Club’s Man and Boy Award, the Heart of the Community Foundation’s Award of Honor and Board of Governor’s Award, the Exchange Club’s Exchangite of the Year Award, and was inducted into the Academy of Georgia Tech Distinguished Alumni. But if you asked Hine, he wouldn’t list those accolades. He’d talk about the impact of the organizations he was involved with. He’d tell you about the importance of giving back. And he’d most certainly talk about Darlington — his days as a student, his love for the lectureship series, and his belief in the school’s mission.
“John gave his time, his heart, and his wisdom to everyone and everything he believed in,” said Julie (Wilson) Lucas (’97), chief advancement officer. “And in doing so, he left his mark — not just on Darlington, but on our entire community and everyone who was lucky enough to cross his path.”
