We provide education and training to students each year, providing a huge range of courses to suit every level.

Pre 16 o er for 2024-25

We can o er a number of di erent study options for our 14-16 learners. These range from Entry 3 and Level 1 with progression to Level 2. The choice and level of course will be discussed with one of the Pre16 Team at an initial meeting to look at options.

We can o er infills into main Study Programmes which run from September 2024 to June 2025, unless they are shorter courses. We also have some nurture groups which are much smaller groups with extra support in place where the learners can flourish in a very supportive atmosphere. The dates of those are listed below. We also have some shorter courses.

VOCATIONAL FOUNDATIONS STUDY PROGRAMME

(Infill into course at any time)

Vocational Foundations encompasses a range of qualifications including Award, Certificate and Diploma in Skills for Employment, Training and Personal Development.

Students have the opportunity to gain life skills as well as the chance to discover which subject that they would like to study further with a range of subject specific options.

The qualifications also contain units to address learners’ needs in Literacy and Numeracy as well as Personal Development areas such as Emotional Intelligence or Computer Basics.

These qualifications will provide learners with an opportunity to:

Gain knowledge and understanding of transferable vocational skills such as problem solving or time management.

Gain an overview of key skills and knowledge relevant to their chosen sector in work experience or simulated work settings.

Progress onto a higher level qualification in a vocational subject.

ESOL (English to Speakers of Other Languages)

Students will study English for Speakers of Other Languages along with maths, ICT and cultural awareness studies. The aim is to prepare ESOL students for progression to further education and study once their English is at a suitable level for progression. Practical experience will be o ered in other vocational areas if suitable.

HAIRDRESSING AND BEAUTY THERAPY

This City and Guilds qualification will provide you with a range of creative hairdressing and beauty skills, as well as building your own personal development in readiness for progressing onto a higher level of

CATERING

Course: Level 1 Hospitality and Catering Study Programme

Start Date: 02/09/24

End Date: 20/06/25 Days:tbc

This qualification will give you an insight into the types of jobs that are available within the catering and hospitality industry, from a professional chef and baker to working in front of house, as well as many other job opportunities within the hospitality industry. You will be able to visit di erent types of catering and hospitality outlets, restaurants, hotels as well as industrial catering sites.

SPORT

Course: NCFE Level 1 Certificate IN SPORT

Start Date: 02/09/24 End Date: 20/06/25 Days: TBc

The purpose of this qualification is to provide learners with an understanding of the active leisure sector and to explain the links between activity and better health, demonstrating the opportunities within daily life to become more active.

Course: NCFE Level 2 diploma IN SPORT

Start Date: 02/09/24 End Date: 20/06/25 Days: TBc

The purpose of this qualification is to provide learners with knowledge within the sport industry including mandatory units of anatomy and physiology, nutrition and participating in sport as well as 3 units subject to tutors’ specialties. This one-year course provides you with a solid foundation of the sport industry preparing you for a higher level 3 study programme.

It is a full time Diploma course, but could also be used to achieve unit only accreditation or possibly an Award or Certificate depending on length of study. Learners will also be able to study GCSE maths and English to gain grade 4 or above.

CONSTRUCTION

Course: E3 Construction Skills (Multi Craft) Pre-16 small nurture group with support

This course is specifically for pre-16 learners and is a small ‘nurture’ group. The students will gain City and Guilds Entry Level 3 Award in Construction Skills including: Brickwork, Plastering, Carpentry and health and safety.

HEALTH, CHILD AND PUBLIC SERVICES

Course: L1 Diploma in Health, Social Care, & Childcare Study Programme (Infill into course at any time)

This is an interactive and exciting course where learners get a chance to understand what is required to work in both the Health & Social Care and Childcare sectors. This is the full-time Diploma course with interactive coursework to develop and understanding of this area. Learners will also be able to study GCSE maths and English to help gain that important grade 4 or above. This course can be used to achieve the full Diploma qualification, or to attend and gain unit only accreditation, or possibly an Award or Certificate depending on the length of study.

Course: Level 2 Award in Effective Listening Skills

This is a new CPCAB accredited short qualification of 15 guided learning hours (equivalent to 5 hours over 3 days) that can be delivered in your school or in college. This course uses group work to help young people to develop good working and personal relationships, listening skills and e ective communication.

On demand in your School or at Darlington College, with a flexible delivery option to meet school requirements and timetables.

Minimum group size is 8 learners and can be delivered on demand throughout the year. Cost £250 per learner.

Course: Level 2 Certificate in Preparing to Work in Adult Social care

This course will allow learners to develop their knowledge and understanding about child development and understand how children learn by play. Learners use a wide variety of interactive methods to discover the joys of working in the Childcare sector. This could be used to achieve the full Diploma qualification, or to attend and gain unit only accreditation, or possibly an Award or Certificate depending on length of study.

Course: LEVEL 2 Diploma in Preparation for Public Services

This practical course will allow learners to understand the needs of the Public Services (Military and Blue Light). Physical Training is integrated into the course along with practical team building skills development. This is a full time Diploma course, but could also be used to achieve unit only accreditation or possibly an Award or Certificate depending on length of study. Learners will also be able to study GCSE maths and English to help gain that important grade 4 or above.

TRAVEL AND TOURISM

Course: Level 2 travel and tourism

Do you have a passion for travel and tourism in the UK? Are you interested in the cultures and attractions of other countries? Are you looking for a rewarding career in a varied and exciting industry? If you answered yes to any of those questions then you can stop your search, because this could be the course for you. This one-year course provides you with a solid foundation of the travel industry preparing you for an apprenticeship, higher level study (e.g. Level 3) or employment within various avenues of work in this exciting industry sector.

MOTOR VEHICLE / ENGINEERING

Course: Level 1 Certificate in Vehicle Maintenance and repair

Do you have a keen interest in how an automotive motor vehicle works? This could be the starting point of an exciting career in the automotive industry. This course is designed as the first step in your training toward being a Motor Vehicle Technician. You will work towards a Level 1 Certificate, you will learn, develop and practise the skills required for employment and/or career progression in the automotive in

This course is for candidates wanting to develop some of the key skills and understanding in motor vehicle systems. These qualifications could also be used as an ‘interest’ course for a wide range of learners.

Course: Level 1 Diploma in Engineering Technologies

The content and structure of this qualification has been developed to provide learners with an introduction to the practices and processes of engineering technologies.

It covers basic knowledge, understanding, and skills that are relevant to progress onto further study within engineering. Learners will have a mix of classroom learning and practical hands on, gaining a basic understanding of engineering.

Topics will include:

• Introduction to Working in Engineering

• Introduction to Machining Engineering Materials

• Introduction to Working with Customers

• Introduction to Computer Aided Drawing (CAD)

• Introduction to Metal Inert Gas Welding (MIG/MAG)

• Introduction to Additive Manufacturing (3D Printing)

ART AND DESIGN AND IT

Course: Level 1 Diploma in Art, Design and Media

Start Date: 02/09/24 End Date: 20/06/25 Days: TBC

This is an exciting course which uses a mixture of art, design and creative media to help you develop confidence, industry knowledge and skills required to progress on to a Level 2 qualification. This course is perfect for creative thinkers and will teach you the relevant skills needed to develop your original ideas and artistic flair. You will be expected to learn basic theory and complete practical projects in a range of areas including; art, design, mixed media, photography, video and audio, and enterprise activities.

Course: BTEC Level 2 First Certificate in Information and Creative Technology

Start Date: 02/09/24 End Date: 20/06/25 Days: TBC

This level 2 will start you on a path leading onto further study opportunities in IT. Some of the topics you will learn are:

The Online World - How do websites work? How do e-mails reach your computer? How does the use of computer applications e ect your daily life?

Technology Systems - Gives you an overview of the hardware and software used in computer systems.

Digital Portfolio - A digital portfolio is an on-screen way to showcase your achievements to potential employers or when applying for a course.

Multimedia Design - You will understand how multimedia products are used and the typical features they contain. You will design, develop and test your own multimedia products.

Software Development - You will learn the rules of a programming language and how to write code to develop a successful program. You will be able to apply some of your findings to your own software solutions.

Career progression can include; Games tester, Web designer, IT Technician and IT administration roles.

Student Support Advisers

Our Student Support Advisers are committed to helping you stay ontrack with your work, giving you any extra support you might need. If you are having difficulties at home or college and need someone to talk to, our Student Support Advisers can listen and guide you in the right way

Counselling

We have a professional student counselling service to provide one-toone confidential sessions to support you through personal and private issues, whilst you are studying at the college.

Contacting your parents/ guardians

Your attendance and punctuality will be monitored by our Pre16 Team and they will contact parents and school (if you are still on a school roll) if you are absent and we haven’t been informed beforehand. Your parents/guardians may also be invited into meetings about your progress.

Terms and Conditions

We will provide Schools with a Service Level Agreement setting out the agreed programme of study and including the Darlington 11-19 conditions.

This will need to be to be signed and returned to College prior to the student starting on programme

We will ask School to provide information to the College about the young person and will want to meet them with parents and a representative from the school

We will ask the School to provide us with the student’s Passport so that we have a full understanding of their needs and how we can best support them

If the student has an EHC plan then the School will retain ownership of this and if the student requires more support than we would normally give then it will be the school’s responsibility to provide this

The SLA will also set out the cost of the programme and our payment terms which are:

Payment to be made at the start of every term as follows:

60% of the fees at the start of the course

40% of the fees at the start of the second term

If the student leaves within the first 4 weeks of the first term all fees will be refunded by the College, but after this 4 week point, then the College will retain all of the first term (only) fees

If the student leaves at any time after the second term payment, all fees will be retained by the College

Infills into programmes at later stages of the academic year, will be subject to separate negotiation and fee structure.

Attendance Monitoring

We can report on attendance as follows

A telephone call daily to confirm attendance or non-attendance

A telephone call daily only if student is absent

Support For Students

The College has a wide range of pastoral support for students and for the pre16 students this includes a designated Co-ordinator who will deal with all pastoral issues and report on attendance. The Co-ordinator will also provide half-termly reports to school on how the student is progressing. She will also provide the school with any updates or concerns.

In addition the College has a team of Student Support Advisers who will deal with any concerns or worries and will refer to Safeguarding if necessary. If there are any safeguarding concerns the Safeguarding Team will contact the school’s safeguarding lead and discuss.

Reports On Progress

A half-termly report will be sent to the school paying the fees or to the Local Authority, Virtual School if appropriate and requested. NB:
