My Retreat to Tarangire Sopa Lodge

A Luxurious Wilderness Experience

Tarangire Sopa Lodge lies hidden among the kopjes, ancient baobabs and grasses of the Tarangire National Park - home to the greatest concentration of elephants in Africa. Many can be seen around the lodge, allowing visitors a close encounter.

On our recent trip to Tarangire National Park, considered the best national park located on the northern circuit for elephant sightings, my family and I were spoilt with the opportunity to stay at Tarangire Sopa Lodge. The lodge lies 118 km southwest of Arusha, approximately two hours’ drive or about an hour by plane from Arusha town. After enjoying a long leisurely game drive in the park, traveling between herds of wild animals and along miles of Africa’s seemingly endless roads, our car came over a slight rise and the lodge appeared almost immediately below us.

Built on different levels, the main public area of the building offered

Tarangire Sopa Lodge provides a perfect location for short safaris or corporate and conference events, the perfect start or end to any safari, a place to relax in the sun, witness the day-to-day events of the resident animals and experience a level of attention to detail, guest comfort and service not to be found anywhere else.

us an extremely cool respite from the outdoor heat as soon as we stepped into the reception. With a perfumed towel and a chilled welcome drink in hand, we suddenly

became aware of the sheer size of the lobby with its glistening marble floors, colourful handwoven carpets, and incredibly high roof. From here, a short flight of steps took us up a level and into the lounge and bar with floor to ceiling windows, an outdoor terrace where we would enjoy an evening sundowner and, later perhaps, a game of pool in the area behind the bar.

I particularly loved the broad veranda, which wraps itself around the lodge and gives prime viewing for the waterhole below, which we were told is filled during the dry season (June-October) and becomes a magnet for wildlife.

The lodge features beautiful African-style buildings with 75 total spacious rooms, all with a private balconies and a mini bar. Lodge staff let us know that they even have rooms that accommodate those with physical disabilities, as well as four interconnecting rooms suitable for families. Our room, like most of the others, had two queen size beds with mosquito nets and large sliding doors opening to a private balcony.

While the circular guest suites, with their high, conical roofs, fan out to either side of the public areas, it is worth mentioning a word of caution here. Because the lodge is not fenced in any way, wild animals are free to come and go as they please, meaning that movements throughout the lobby area might be delayed by an elephant or two. While such a situation is very rare, the kind lodge guards nonetheless insisted on accompanying us to and from our room each morning

and night.

On the other side of the reception lobby is a coffee shop where you can enjoy a wide range of Tanzanian highland brews along with freshly baked pastries. Adjacent to this area, a flight of steps takes you down into the dining room for a leisurely and delicious meal beneath an intricately painted mural on a high gable at one end of the room. Even the floor is a work of art with its multi-coloured timbers and copper nails. Since we love being outdoors, we were thrilled to find out that the restaurant has a terrace running along one side of its entire length so we could enjoy your breakfast with a view over the park’s tree-studded, grassy plains.

Weather permitting, lunch is always served at the lodge’s lowest level and beside the swimming pool with its central island and bar beside a dry river bed, which lodge staff

informed us fills up during the rainy seasons. As for dinner, the dining room has an enormous outdoor patio where we enjoyed dinner every other night, and this experience beneath Africa’s starfilled sky is one that we will never forget.

You won’t be disappointed staying at the lovely Tarangire Sopa Lodge. The lodge promises a relaxing and unique experience. Between our lovely room, the pool, the game room, the hospitality lounge with complimentary newspapers, and, above all, the stunning scenery and wildlife in the park, we wished our stay would last forever!

Tarangire National Park

Home of the largest and wonderful African elephants

Lies to the south of the large open grass plains of southern Maasailand and is the best-kept secret on the northern safari circuit. It offers wonderful panoramas of wide savannah grasslands dotted with open acacia woodland studded with large baobab trees. The park is central to Tanzania’s northern circuit, with Arusha and

Kilimanjaro National Parks to one side and Lake Manyara and Serengeti National Parks and Ngorongoro Crater to the other.

Landscape

Being such a large park, the landscape of Tarangire varies greatly as you move about. For starters you have plenty of grassland plains

dotted with ancient baobab trees. You also have riverine woodlands, rocky hills, rugged gullies, bushland. The primary river running through the park is Tarangire River, and because of this you also have numerous swamps and floodplains. Trees include not only baobabs, but also sausage trees, beautiful acacias (thorn

Tarangire National Park is the sixth largest national park in Tanzania after Ruaha, Serengeti, Mikumi, Katavi and Mkomazi. The name of the park originates from the Tarangire River that crosses through the park, being the only source of water for wild animals during dry seasons. During the dry season, thousands of animals migrate to the Tarangire National Park from Manyara. The park is famous for its huge number of elephants, baobab trees and tree climbing African pythons. It lies a short distance to the southeast of Lake Manyara and covers an area of approximately 2,850 square kilometers.

trees), fan palms and candelabra trees (euphorbias), among others.

Wildlife Migration

The Tarangire National Park forms part of a bigger wildlife ecosystem covering over 20,000 sq km, which include the Lake Manyara National Park in the north, as well as five other surrounding wildlifecontrolled areas. The key to this wildlife ecosystem is the Tarangire River, and the local animal migration in the area begins from this river, at the start of the short rainy season around October

FACTS

Size: 2,850 sq km (1,100 sq miles).

Location: 118 km (75 miles) southwest of Arusha.

Scenery: The beautiful views of Tarangire River, wonderful panoramas of wide savannah grasslands dotted with open acacia woodland studded with large baobab trees as well as the forest, which attracts a wide variety of birds.

Features: Forests, baobab

trees, Tarangire Rives, and Maasai villages.

Wildlife Includes: Elephants, lions, leopards, cheetah, wildebeests, zebras, buffaloes, impalas, hartebeests and elands.

every year. At the height of the long rainy season, the animals, which include wildebeest, Thompson gazelles, zebra and even African elephants, will be widely spread out over this 20,000 sq km area. When the wet season ends, the animals begin their migration back towards the river and spend the dry season July to October, concentrated in large numbers around the river.

Flora & Fauna

The park’s most obvious features are the permanent Tarangire River, which runs the length of it, and the vast ‘swamps’ – which are,

in fact, dry for most of the year. Despite the fact that Tarangire is drier than the Serengeti, its vegetation is generally much more dense including densely packed elephant grass, large areas of mixed acacia woodlands and some lovely ribbons of riverine forest.

Birds Life

Enjoy seeing a diverse range of beautiful and rare bird species during your vacation in Tarangire national park. The marshes of Tarangire are home to around 550 distinct bird species. Tarangire is a well-known safari site for bird lovers who find themselves engrossed for an extended

period of time. Crested francolins, hoopoes, yellownecked spurfowl, hornbills, guinea fowl, steppe eagles, brown parrots, the enormous lappet-faced vulture, whitebellied go away bird, bateleur eagles, mouse birds, Kori bustards, yellow-collared lovebirds, bee-eaters are some of the bird species that can be spotted during your safari in Tarangire-tanzania.

Nature & Wildlife Safari Experience

Tarangire is home to several herds of elephants in Africa of up to 300 members per herd. In addition, there are large numbers of wildebeests, zebras, impalas,

elands, buffaloes, giraffes, gazelles, coke’s hartebeests, Bohor reed-buck, the greater and lesser kudu and on rare occasion you can see the rare gerenuk and the fringeeared oryx. Other cats that are common are leopards, lions, hyenas, cheetahs and wild dogs which are popular in the southern plains of the park which are open with spaced baobab trees.

Things to do

Day and night game drives, filming, hot air balloon safaris, guided walking safaris, photography, bush meals, picnicking, birdwatching, and day visits to Maasai and Barabaig

villages are just some of the tourism activities available in Tarangire National Park.

Getting there

By Car: Tarangire National Park is 120 km southwest as the bird flies from the city of Arusha. The drive from Arusha to Tarangire is 140 km along the A104, and takes three hours. By plane: You can also fly into the Tarangire National Park, using one of the airstrips. The most used is Tarangire airstrip but there’s others. Charter flights are available through companies such as Safari Airlink, Flight Link, Coastal Aviation and Auric Air from Arusha Airport.

When To Go

The park can be visited at any time of the year, but the best time for wildlife viewing is the dry season from June to November, at least if you’re hoping to see the larger animals. During this time, the animals gather around the river which is the only source of water, so they’re easy to spot there.

Where To Stay

There are several accommodation facilities inside and outside the park but our recommendation is as follow;

• Tarangire Sopa Lodge: Built to blend in with

the vastness of its surroundings, Tarangire Sopa Lodge lies hidden among the kopjes, ancient baobab and grasses of the Tarangire National Park - home to the greatest concentration of elephants in Africa. Many can be seen around the lodge, allowing visitors a close encounter.

• Lake Burunge Tented Lodge: Located in Mwada, near Tarangire National Park, at only 2

hour’s drive from Arusha. The Beckoning Baobab Tented Lodge offers an immersive experience in the heart of nature. The property lies outside a Wildlife Management Area, meaning no additional conservation fees apply, and activities such as walking and biking within the area will soon be available.

You won’t be disappointed to have a few days safari in the Tarangire National Park.

This park is ideal for game drives, walking safaris, hot air balloon safaris, bird walks, day trips to Maasai and Barabaig villages and photography. Tarangire promises a relaxing and unique experience. If you are looking for a more personal and quieter gaming safari, Tarangire National Park could be your ideal location!

The city is the largest and most populous Swahili speaking city in the world. It is the capital of the Dar Es Salaam Region administrative province and consists of three administrative districts: northern Kinondoni, central Ilala, and southern Temeke.

There is a fusion of cultural

city’s architecture. Sikhs, Muslims, Hindus and Christians co-exist peacefully, with the wail of the Azaan blending into the sound of church bells in the mornings. The locals are very friendly and most of them speak English, however it is useful to download a Swahili dictionary on your phone or carry a pocket dictionary to assist you with basic translations.

Dar Es salaam is Tanzania’s most prominent city in arts, fashion, media,

PLACES TO GO IN

DAR

Dar Es Salaam is the main city that most visitors will encounter and the arrival point for most visitors off

Dar Es Salaam is also the nearest location to the safari circuits in the South of the country, as well as being next door to Zanzibar. In the North of Tanzania, the far more rural town of Arusha is the start point for most safaris to the North of the country.

BONGOYO ISLAND

One of the most entertaining things to do in Dar Es Salaam is swim in the beautiful warm tropical Indian Ocean. Bongoyo Island is a small island off the coast of Dar that makes a fantastic day trip of lazying on the beach, snorkeling and dining on fresh fried marine reserve a few years ago, fees have severely increased, but it’s still worth it. Get to the island by taking a boat from The Slipway shopping center.

TINGATINGA ART CENTER

Tanzanian’s have long been famous around Africa for their artwork. The modern movement of Tingatinga painting is one favorite styles of Tanzanian art. An artistic movement that began with Edward Said Tingatinga, the style is characterized by extremely bright oil colors and

Tingatinga center is a rainbow of color and artistic inspiration. You can browse around and buy anything you see!

COCO BEACH ON THE WEEKENDS

Coco Beach, also known as Oyster Bay, is a stretch of beach located on the Msasani Peninsula of Dar Es Salaam.

If you are looking for fun things to do in Dar Es Salaam, head over to

Coco Beach on the weekend when it’s packed full of local Tanzanians. There are plenty of street food snacks and sometimes live music. The open area is also a place where frequent concerts and parties take place – check the city events guide. Swimming is not really recommended at Coco Beach, though some choose to wade in the water.

ASKARI MONUMENT

One of the most well known historical

Salaam is Askari Monument. Depicting a soldier with his bayonet pointing to the harbor, the monument is a reminder of the soldiers that fought as the Carrier Corps in World War I. The cast bronze Askari Monument is supposedly located in the precise center of Dar, in the middle of the roundabout that bisects Samora Avenue with Maktaba Street.

TANZANIAN BEVERAGES

Everywhere you travel you’ll encounter a new and unique set of local beverages. When you are in Tanzania you may want to sample the selection of locally brewed beer, have a few cups of Dar street coffee and especially guzzle a pungent Stoney Tangawizi.

NATIONAL MUSEUM

If you want to learn more about the

history and culture of Tanzania or see some of the fossils that have been uncovered in the country, you’ll be interested in visiting the National Museum.

MWENGE CARVERS’ VILLAGE

Located on the outskirts of town, Mwenge Carvers’ Village is a great attraction in Dar Es Salaam if you are in the market for Tanzanian souvenirs. Though there is a lot of the same-same type of things, if you take the time to browse around you’ll come away with some unique and quality Tanzanian handicrafts.

ZANZIBARI MIX

There is one dish in Dar Es Salaam that is rare, but is a gem of an example of an expertly prepared dish that sums up the realm of cultures and traditions of the city: Zanzibari Mix. The makeshift Mama Mumtaz restaurant is not easy to find – in fact, you’ll probably have to walk to Kariakoo market and ask someone to direct you to it. Zanzibari mix is incredible – a comforting combination of deep fried fritters in a coconut milk curry and garnished with fresh chutneys and chili sauce.

NORTH BEACH – JANGWANI AND MBUJA ISLAND

North of Dar Es Salaam there are a few lovely beaches and islands to enjoy as well. From White Sands hotel in Jangwani, you can take a boat to Mbuja Island, a great place to unwind and eat freshly caught Indian Ocean seafood.

INDIAN FOOD

With a sizable population of Indians, there’s a decent selection of delicious Indian food available in Dar Es Salaam. The Upanga area, in central Dar Es Salaam, is one of the best areas of town to locate good Indian food.

PUGU HILLS NATURE RESERVE

Pugu Hills is a designated nature reserve located around 25 kilometers from the center of Dar Es Salaam. Along with an opportunity to hike the trails, you can also choose to bird watch or visit the cave which is famous for its colony of bats. You can either get to Pugu Hills on your own or take a day tour.

KARIAKOO MARKET

One of the busiest and most thrilling markets in Dar Es Salaam is the local Kariakoo market. This is the place to go if you are hunting for the best bargains in town or wish to see the authentic side of local style Tanzanian shopping. Make sure you haggle to get the best deals.

TEMPLE ROAD

If you are walking around downtown Dar Es Salaam, take a stroll down Temple Road where you’ll find a selection of religious temples. You can visit a few of the temples and have a look around.

KANGA SHOPPING – UHURU ST.

A popular thing to buy in Dar Es Salaam are the colorful pieces of wrap around cloth known as kangas. These brightly dyed rectangles of fabric are available in infinite colors, with infinite patterns and often include a message written in Kiswahili. Head over to Uhuru Street in downtown Dar Es Salaam for a huge distribution selection of kangas.

AZANIA LUTHERAN CHURCH

Originally built by German missionaries in Tanzania, the Azania Lutheran Church is an iconic structure located at Dar Es Salaam’s harbor front. From the cathedral you’ll have easy access to other tourist attractions around town.

NYAMA CHOMA

Nyama choma (roasted meat – often goat) is wildly popular – and incredibly delicious. Go to a local restaurant, order your choice of meat and wait for it to slowly roast. In Tanzania, nyama choma is served with a few chillies and sometimes a tomato and red onion garnish. Many Tanzanians choose to wash down their nyama choma with a few beers.

TANZANIAN STREET FOOD

Whether it’s roasted maize or mama cooked Tanzanian chapatis also try Mishkaki which is the Tanzanian version of meat on a stick – street style shish kebabs!

SOUTH COST BEACHES

Seclusion, peace and quietness is how I would describe the South Coast Beaches of Dar Es Salaam. There are a number of hotels that you can visit, or you can rent your own personal banda that covered hut for the day. The lanky palm trees rustling in the breeze and the rythmic wash of waves makes spending a day on the South Coast Beaches one of the most relaxing things to do in Dar Es salaam. One of the best things to do on the South Coast is to go horse riding on one of the best beaches you will ever encounter. The Dar Es Salaam Horse Club is located nearby to the world famous Ras Kutani Resort. Get there by personal vehicle or by local dala dala minivan. You’ll need to cross to the Kigamboni side of Dar Es Salaam by taking the ferry across the port.

SWAHILI DELICACIES

In the evenings, Ali Kuku, Mamboz, Ten To Ten and Natasha are famous for its barbeque chicken and chips, located in the city centre. Other places to try matoke (green banana) are Chef’s Pride (Chagga Street in city centre) or Zahir Restaurants ( Mosque St in city centre).

NIGHT LIFE

Dar Es salaam has alot to offer when it comes to entertainment and relaxation especially at night. here is a collection of top venues to kick start your experience in this amazing city!

Akira is one the favourite rooftop bars

in Dar es Salaam. With a chilled out vibe and great music, it offers 360 degree sea views. Dar Live has a Zanzibari feel to it, being on the beach, and is open and very casual. The bar is on the beach, nestled among Dhow furniture in a most rustic fashion, open throughout the week. The George and Dragon has a very strong expat following with various activities every night to keep anyone entertained. Trinity is another place with a true Tanzanian feel with live bands and good vibe, located near Oyster Bay. Every saturday and sunday get entertained at Mediterraneo with live band, beach party and bikini party. There are more then five casinos in Dar such as, Sea Cliff Casino, Princess Casino, New Africa in the city where you can have fun, gambling experience and be entertained.

Latest on the block and with the best views of Dar by night is High Spirit Bar, Lounge & Nightclub located on the roof top of IT Plaza, Ohio Street and Havoc Nighspot is the freshest addition to Dar’s nightclub scene with spectacular views of the ocean and Dar’s skyline and offering a wide range of drinks and cocktails, dance the night away to the rythmic and eclectic beats by our DJs and special performers.

VILLAGE MUSEUM

The Village Museum offers a chance to observe a number of typical style Tanzanian traditional huts and learn more about the tribes of the country. Dance and drum performances are held in the evenings on weekends.

DAR ES SALAAM FISH MARKET

One of the favorite things to do in Dar Es Salaam is wake up early in the morning and wander around the Dar fish market. People gather from around the city to purchase the fresh catch of the day. Arrive at around 6:30 am to catch the most energized fish auctions taking place.

THE SLIPWAY

The Slipway is Dar Es Salaam’s premier shopping and leisure centre. Here, you can shop, drink, dine or watch the sun set over the Indian Ocean. Parents can set their children loose in our waterfront playground, and travelers can relax in our lovely hotel rooms.

BAGAMOYO TOWN

Bagamoyo town located north of Dar Es Salaam, is an ancient East African trade port. The town has been influenced by Arabs and Indians to create a uniquely Swahili culture. On a day trip to Bagamoyo, you can visit ancient ruins, old churches and mosques and tour one of Tanzania’s only college of arts known as Chuo Cha Sanaa. If you don’t have your own transportation, you can get to Bagamoyo by local bus or by taking a day tour

FISHING

Latham Island (Fungu Kisimkasi) is a small, uninhabited oceanic island. The island and its associated reefs stick out the Indian Ocean in the middle of nowhere an insignificant pinhead in the Indian Ocean. This structure promotes currents, and provides haven for baitfish and their predators and is thus a great big game fishing destination. The Island lies 45 nautical miles East of Dar es Salaam so may be fished on a day trip or more advisably on an overnighter, during which the adventurous angler can try for the mighty Broadbill Swordfish.

There are several charter operators out of Dar Es Salaam, and they generally fish at Latham itself or for shorter and cheaper outings, work the Zanzibar Channel. Both fisheries can provide exciting sport – offering chances at Black and Striped Marlin, Sailfish, Wahoo, Yellow fin and Dogtooth Tuna, King Mackerel, Dorado, Giant Trevally, bottom fish such as grouper and Red Snapper, and many more. It is an angler’s paradise. If you have a day off in dar and love to hear a big reel scream, don’t hesitate to take off into the blue water, its right at your feet.

Have fun in Dar Es Salaam!

Exploring Zanzibar at its fullest with Maru Maru hospitality

On the historic island of Zanzibar, amidst the quaint, narrow alleys of Stone Town is Maru Maru Hotel, once a townhouse now boasts 51 well-laid rooms.

Maru Maru Hotel consists of two wings – the Classic Wing with 11 rooms, which have undergone restoration, and the New Wing with 33 modern rooms built around a small courtyard with a star-shaped fountain. The courtyard is ideal for spending time quietly reading, the noise of the water in the fountain a soothing backdrop. On the way to the courtyard, there is a coffee shop which also serves freshly baked pastries and cakes just in case you want to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee or tea whilst rewinding.

The rooms are well equipped with modern amenities, a comfortable bed in Zanzibari style, swathed in a mosquito net, which is not only essential but also creates a romantic atmosphere with the stained-

glass shades.

An elevator connects both wings to the rooftop terrace, which is a delightful place to be, largely because of the stunning view of the ocean, so you can witness the gentle traffic of dhows, a vista that’s barely changed in generations.

Climbing the flight of wooden stairs leading to the terrace restaurant and reflecting on the hotel’s personality, it’s evident why Maru Maru has been the

preferred property for eminent personalities like Bill Clinton and his daughter, Chelsea. And it wasn’t just the atmosphere that struck me, the scent of the place did too: the hotel smells wonderful as day-long diffusers burn perfumed essential oils.

Maru Maru serves a delightful variety of cuisines, especially Continental and Asian – quality is great and portions are generous. I especially loved the way an array of sauces was offered which you could blend with the main ingredient – poultry, meat, seafood or vegetables.

All the staff right - from the General Manager, receptionist, chefs –lead and supporting roles were super friendly and helpful. Services and requests were promptly addressed.

So, if you’re after an affordable Stone Town break – Maru Maru is a great option and delivers the perfect launch pad from where to explore this historic little place.

Tanzania World Heritage Sites

From the Heights of Kilimanjaro to Depths of Zanzibar

TANZANIA IS A COUNTRY WHICH ENCOMPASSES AN EXTRAORDINARY HISTORY AND AN ABUNDANCE OF NATURAL WONDERS; THEREFORE, IT IS NO SURPRISE TANZANIA HAS EIGHT WORLD HERITAGE SITES. THESE CHOSEN SITES ARE A FUNDAMENTAL REMINDER WHY INTERACTION BETWEEN PEOPLE AND NATURE MUST ACHIEVE A BALANCE OF PRESERVATION AND CONSERVATION BETWEEN THE TWO.”

STONETOWN, ZANZIBAR

Stone Town, or Mji Mkongwe in Swahili (meaning “ancient town”), is the oldest part of Zanzibar City. The old town is built on a triangular peninsula of land on the western coast of the island and was awarded World Heritage Site status in 2000. Justification for the inscription includes its rich cultural fusion and harmonization; its great symbolic importance in the suppression of slavery; and the intense seaborne trading activity between Asia and Africa, which is illustrated today in the exceptional architecture

and urban structure of Stone Town.

KILIMANJARO NATIONAL PARK

The Kilimanjaro National Park is located near Moshi, Tanzania. It is centered on the iconic and dramatic snow-clad slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, which covers an area of 753 km (291 square miles). In 1973, the mountain above the tree line was classified as a National Park and was opened to public access in 1977, but it wasn’t until 1987 UNESCO listed the park as a World Heritage Site.

KONDOA ROCK ART SITE

The Kondoa rock art site is a series of caves carved into the side of a hill looking out over the steppe. The cave site is nine kilometers off the main highway from Kondoa to Arusha, about 20 km north of Kondoa. The site has a spectacular collection of images from over 150 shelters depicting elongated people, animals, and hunting scenes. Today many of the shelters are still considered to have ritual associations with the

people who live nearby, reflecting their beliefs and cosmological traditions.

THE NGORONGORO CONSERVATION AREA

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) boasts the finest blend of landscapes, wildlife, people and archaeological sites in Africa and is situated 180 km west of Arusha. The rich pasture and permanent water of the crater floor supports a large resident population of wildlife

of up to 25,000 predominantly grazing animals. The conservation area is administered by the NCA Authority, and its boundaries follow the boundary of the Ngorongoro Division of Ngorongoro District. It covers an area of 8,288 km (3,200 square miles).

SELOUS GAME RESERVE

The Selous Game Reserve covers a total area of 54,600 km (21,081 square miles) and is

one of largest fauna reserves of the world, located in the south of Tanzania. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982 due to the diversity of its wildlife and undisturbed nature. The reserve is home to typical savannah animals such as elephants, hippopotami, the rare African Wild Dog and crocodiles, which are all found in larger numbers compared to any other African park.

SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK

The Serengeti National Park is Tanzania’s oldest park, and one of the world’s last great wildlife refuges, hence its World Heritage Site status. It is most famous

for its annual migration of over one million white bearded (or brindled) wildebeest and 200,000 zebra. The park covers 14,763 km (5,700 square miles) of grassland plains and savannah as well as riverine forest and woodlands. The park lies in the north of the country, bordered to the north by the national Tanzania and Kenyan border, where it is contiguous with the Masai Mara National Reserve.

RUNS OF KILWA KISIWANI AND RUINS OF SONGO MNARA

The remains of these two great East African ports admired by early European explorers are situated on two small islands near

the coast. From the 13th to the 16th century, the merchants of Kilwa dealt in gold, silver, pearls, perfumes, Arabian crockery, Persian earthenware and Chinese porcelain; much of the trade in the Indian Ocean thus passed through their hands. Serious archaeological investigation began in the 1950s. In 1981 it was declared a World Heritage Site, and noted visitor sites are the Great Mosque, the Mkutini Palace and some remarkable ruins. However, the ruins are also on the List of World Heritage Sites in Danger. The list constitutes a call to improve their safe guarding and is designed to rally national and international efforts for their preservation.

EXIM BANK REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO

MENTAL HEALTH WITH RENOVATION OF CHILD AND ADOLESCENT UNIT AT MUHIMBILI NATIONAL HOSPITAL

Exim Bank Tanzania has officially handed over a fully renovated Child and Adolescent Mental Health Unit at the Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) Dar es Salaam on 15th October 2025, marking another milestone in its ongoing commitment to improving healthcare

Tunder the Bank’s flagship community investment programme ‘Exim Cares,’ forms part of its broader vision to strengthen Tanzania’s health systems by creating safer, more inclusive, and dignified environments for vulnerable groups particularly children and young people facing mental health challenges.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, Exim Bank’s Chief Finance Officer, Mr. Shani Kinswaga, said the project is a continuation of the Bank’s

positive social change through long-term investments in health and wellbeing.

Also, add we are not just a bank that just do financial services we are also a part of the big picture in making the community grow and we have started with mental health.

“At Exim Bank, we are not just a bank that just do financial service, we are also a part of the big picture in making the community grow and we have started with mental health. We believe

medical issue, but a social and economic priority. This renovated unit represents more than just infrastructure; it reflects our collective responsibility to build hope and dignity for the next generation,” said Mr. Kinswaga.

“Through Exim Cares, we have committed to mobilising TSh 300 million over the next three years to support mental health infrastructure and awareness initiatives across Tanzania. The partnership with Muhimbili National Hospital is part of that wider vision to make mental

health care more accessible, effective, and compassionate,” he added.

Mr. Kinswaga also acknowledged the contribution of the Bank’s insurance partners such as Alliance General, Strategis General, Heritage Insurance Co., Alliance Life, and MUA who have joined hands with Exim Bank through the Bima Festival - Amsha Matumaini initiative. The campaign seeks to raise awareness, fight stigma, and mobilise resources towards mental health support and care.

“Our collaboration with partners from the insurance sector is a strong demonstration of what public-private partnerships can achieve when driven by shared purpose. Together, we are not only improving facilities but also amplifying national conversations around mental wellness,” he said.

Receiving the renovated facility, Muhimbili National Hospital Executive Director, Dr. Delillah Charles Kimambo, expressed gratitude to Exim Bank for its continued partnership and support in strengthening healthcare systems.

“This renovated Child and Adolescent Mental Health Unit comes at a critical time when mental health cases among young people are increasing across the country,” said Dr. Kimambo.

Through Exim Cares, the Bank has over the years implemented impactful community projects nationwide - including blood donation drives, educational support initiatives, financial literacy training for women and youth through the Women Empowerment Programme (WEP), and environmental conservation campaigns. Health remains one of its five key focus areas, alongside Education, Environment, Social Investment, and Innovation.

“The improvements made to this facility will enable us to provide more comprehensive, compassionate, and dignified care to our patients. On behalf of Muhimbili National Hospital, I would like to commend Exim Bank for its consistency in supporting public health institutions and for recognising mental health as an integral part of our national wellbeing,” she added.

The refurbished unit features upgraded patient wards, consultation rooms, therapy and counselling areas, and staff offices, equipped with modern fittings and a redesigned layout

that creates a calm, safe, and child-friendly atmosphere. The new environment is designed to promote healing and recovery for children and adolescents living with mental health challenges.

Exim Bank’s intervention follows growing concern over the rising number of mental health cases in Tanzania. According to the Ministry of Health, mental health patients have increased from 386,000 in 2012 to more than 2 million in 2021, highlighting the urgent need for improved infrastructure and awareness programmes.

The Bank reaffirmed that the renovation of the Muhimbili unit is not an isolated project but part of an ongoing journey to strengthen national healthcare systems through sustainable investments and collaborative action.

“We are proud to be part of this story of hope,” concluded Mr. Kinswaga. “When the private sector and public institutions work together for the greater good, the result is a stronger, healthier, and more resilient Tanzania.”
