inead Pokall had been modelling for little over a year when she recently received an email that would change her life. The 16 year old model from Athenry had caught the eye of Miami based owner and designer of online magazine ‘Scorpio Jin’. Scorpio Jin is a non-commercial, promotional website which focuses on various forms of art, including music, art, photography, fashion, and film. Owner, Keran Look Loy wanted to exclusively feature Sinead as a model on the website. “I remember when the owner and designer of the online magazine first contacted me about doing a feature, my eyes lit up wide. I couldn’t believe it,” said Sinead, “I rang my Mam immediately to tell her about the opportunity I’d just been offered. As soon as she arrived home, we sat in the sitting room together and starred at the laptop screen, smiling. The urge

to scream was unbearable.” The feature includes excerpts from Sinead’s modelling portfolio with photography by four local photographers. Sinead also wrote a bio for the feature describing her life growing up in the west of Ireland. She joins a select number of international models who have also been featured on the website. “Being featured on Scorpio Jin was an honour. I’d never experienced anything quite like it. Needless to say I was extremely proud of myself for getting this far with my modelling career. The feedback I got from friends and even strangers was amazing! Personally, I feel as if it’s given me a more professional image, a proper boost in my career and hope to do many features like it in the future,” concludes Sinead. ne local film student has shone the spotlight on the interior of the old Bon Secour hospital in Tuam, known at The Grove. The short observational documentary, by Kieran McHugh, gives a stark insight into the derelict hospital as it stands now, without narrative or story. “The video is meant to show The Grove as it is now but also tries to

echo the memories that most people would have of a once beautiful building, where life both came into this world, and also left it,” explains Kieran. “The hospital is a huge loss to the Tuam community. As I am from Tuam town, The Grove has always had a place in my heart. I wanted to revisit it in its current state.” The short has recently been uploaded onto YouTube where you can check it out online.

alway artist, Vanda Luddy, has made her name painting the town she knows so well. She has recently moved to a new premises, at 11 Upper Abbeygate Street, where she continues to enthral with her stunning landscapes from the locality. Her collection includes beautiful city streetscapes, including the ever popular Long Walk, along with stunning scenes from Barna, Connemara, Kinvara and Oughterard. She also captures people, still life and animals and her bright and cheery images are a reflection of her heartwarming personality, as she celebrates her city through art. “I have always liked bright and cheerful colours,” she says, “there is so much doom and gloom out there, I just love a bit of colour.” Vanda discovered her talent 18 years ago when she went to a watercolour class and hasn’t looked back since. Her first exhibition was a rousing success,

10

selling all of the 40 pieces on display. It was the springboard to launch her into her new career, having run a children’s play group for 10 years, and she opened her first gallery in Oughterard. Originally from Raleigh Row, Vanda was delighted to have an opportunity to open a city centre premises, and has since moved across the road to her new location on Upper Abbeygate Street. “I wanted a place in the pedestrian part of Galway and I am delighted with the size of my new premises,” she explains. “It has everything under one roof, from printing and framing, to the gallery downstairs and a chill out area. “I am so happy to have the opportunity to do what I love and have super customers. Everyone comes in with a smile on their face and are quite relaxed. The Galway people especially have been a great support and we usually have a bit of a laugh!” Her unusual name has confused many into thinking that Vanda is not from Galway.

• 6:30pm: Enjoy a one-hour conversational jaunt through Ireland’s past at O’Connors in Salthill.

“My mum named me after a character in a book, No Price for Freedom, which was set during WWII. The nun’s tortured me in school because of my name as it wasn’t a saint’s name! It’s Polish, I believe, and some customers come in requesting a certain image from the city and they don’t realise I am originally from Galway,” she says. Vanda sells framed fine art prints from as little as €50 and they can go up to €230 for the largest print. The prints have a 100 year life span and are all individually signed and numbered by the artist herself. “Some people come in to buy a card and come back later for the painting,” says Vanda. “I have a lot of local customers, and some from abroad who like to bring a little bit of home back with them,” she concludes. Vanda’s Gallery is open 7 days a week, Mon-Sat from 10am-6pm and Sunday from 2-5:30pm. www.vandaluddy.com

Straight talking from the trailor trash mouth of Southern Belle, Candy, and the more refined Cara from Connemara.

Dear Candy:

By Cara LYONS

www.lovefromcara.com

My husband is the worst at snoring. You may think it’s a common problem, but the way he does it is not! When he snores at night, it’s so loud I I’d swear it rattles the windows and it’s not a normal sound either - when he breaths out it’s like a fog horn! I’ve never heard anything like it. I feel bad because I have actually thought about smothering him with a pillow at night just for some peace and it gets worse. He’s star ted doing it while he’s awake! I swear if we are sitting beside each other watching T V or having dinner these ‘snoring’ noises just come out. It doesn’t end there either. He ‘sleep jumps’ really badly sometimes. It’s like sleeping with a salmon under the covers. I haven’t slept properly in weeks and I think I’m going mad. Please help!

Candy: The problem is your husband has some sort of demonic creature living in his body that feeds off keeping you awake. You can cut off your husband’s nose and stick the nozzle of the vacuum cleaner down his throat and suck the evil out of him, just be sure to put his nose on ice straight away cus’ surgeons can stick that thing back on after and just remember that the blade must be sacred and the vacuum must be blessed before you use it or you’ll

just look like a crazy person with her vacuum down her noseless husband’s throat for no reason OR you can go to visit the monks in a far off land and have a nap cus’ their real quiet there and you can bring back 11 herbs and spices, make a really nice curry and rice and eat that cus’ it’s your last meal before he drives you insane again and you spontaneously combust. Good Luck!

Cara: Oh sweet lord above! Do not do what Candy said! I swear I don’t know why you people keep addressing your letters to her when she says such crazy things. Snoring is caused when the soft palate flops down. There are options out there like special mouth guard or nasal strips. However, the fact his

12

snoring is so strong and something is affecting his breathing while he is awake means there could be an underlying medical issue that needs to be fixed. Advice your husband to see his doctor and hopefully they can figure out what’s causing this.

nocknacarra beauty, Leah Tiernan will represent Galway in the Miss Ireland competition on July 19th. Leah, a graduate in fashion from GTI tells the CRAIC in Galway all about what she has been up to since winning Miss Galway, her preparations for the Miss Ireland competition and her plans for the future. What was your inspiration for entering the Miss Galway contest? To be honest I was entered by the girls that I work with in PIA Galway. They saw it as something that I would be good at and that I should go for. So I went along on the night and amazingly won, which I was just over the moon about. I’m very grateful that they encouraged me to enter, it has been a great experience so far and I have met and worked with so many lovely people. How have you been keeping busy since winning Miss Galway?

16

I have been very busy since winning Miss Galway which has been great. I have been doing a lot of press calls, interviews, modelling and attending fabulous events such as the Ábalta Charity Ball last Saturday. I am representing Coyotes Late Bar this coming year and signed with Catwalk Modelling Agency so I have a lot of support and work coming from both. Being Miss Galway has involved so many different experiences all of which I have enjoyed. Tell us one interesting fact about you. I did ballet for 10 years and always dreamt of being a ballerina as a child! What do you enjoy most about modelling? I always enjoy the buzz of modelling and stepping out of my comfort zone when it comes to some of the large scale fashion shows I have done and when it comes to photo shoots, I enjoy seeing the end results in the images and the gorgeous clothes that I get to wear too of course! in GALWAY

• 6pm: Macnas artistic director, Noeline Kavanagh, will officially launch an exhibition Luke McMullan, New Paintings at the Kenny Gallery, Liosbán, Tuam Road for fringe.

We were fed, watered and entertained ‘til the wee hours and want to thank all of you who came to celebrate with us. We were first in the queue for the sumptuous pig-on-a-spit by Atlantic Hogs. Our wonderful models looked beautiful as they took part in our interactive fashion show and had the courage to

mingle with the crowd. You can see more about this on our style page. We were blown away by the vocal talents of Lauren Davis. That girl has some serious talent and we were mesmerised as she sang for us in the backstage bar. Don’t miss a gig by this girl, you won’t be disappointed. The night finished out with the best of live music with Cozy Cartel and we bopped til the wee hours.

I

don’t have green fingers. In fact, I have often described myself as the killer of any known living plant. It’s just one of those things I have accepted about myself. That, and my amazing ability to get lost anywhere, thanks to having no sense of direction.

and the Gombeens certainly know how to clown about. The melodic barbershop sounds of the Galway Baytones would pop up every now and again on the winding stairs located within the stone buildings, while the jazz tunes spilled out across the lawn with local band Strictly Dixie.

The latter aside, I ventured out to the Claregalway Garden Festival over the weekend of July 5th, driven by a curiosity about its stunning surrounds of Claregalway Castle. It really was a fantastic event. There were plenty of stalls, with plants, but more than enough to keep the non-green fingered souls entertained.

All this, and I was only there for around an hour or so. There had also been plenty of talks for the enthused gardeners, while others simply sipped wine, or enjoyed cheese and oysters, outside a pop up Sheridans. If you fancied a read, there was also a pop up Kenny’s bookshop on site.

I was enthralled by the sounds of the army band of the 2nd command. We sat around the bandstand – it was actually a small marquee – and listened as they entertained with popular hits and theme songs, from the Pink Panther to the Simpsons. Of course being Galway, a concert isn’t a concert without someone in a brightly coloured costume riding around through the crowd on a handmade hobby horse,

20

And there was plenty more than an ice cream van for the young wans, as they could enjoy Guido Fanzini’s Impossible Circus. Sure you would never want to leave. The Irish weather held firm, despite sparks of our ‘four seasons in one day’ climate. The event supported the Galway Simon Community and CBM charities. So there you have it. You can take a known plant killer to a gardening festival and she will be reluctant to go home. With so much food and festivities, it would have been worth camping out there. It’s one to watch next year. in GALWAY

ne of the highlights of our Craicing 1st Birthday Party at Monroe’s Live was a fashion show with a twist. CRAICING GAEILGE!!! By Dara KELLY

Glóir a Ghnóthú Dar le Amy Chua ina leabhar Triple Package; What Really Determines Success, is iad na trí saintréith is mo a bhíonn ag róghnóthachtálaithe ná 1. Féinmhuinín (is féidir liom seo a dhéanamh); 2. Neamhdhiongbháilteacht (caithfidh mé déanamh níos fearr, mo chaighdeáin a ardú); 3. Mianta a smachtú (is féidir liom gan géilleadh don chathú inniu ar mhaithe le mo sprioc a bhaint amach sa todhchaí). Cén ceann acu is gá duitse díriú isteach air le tú féin a fheabhsú? D’fhéadfá meantóir nó comhpháirtí cuntasachta a fháil chun cabhrú leat oibriú ar gach ceann de na trí saintréith thuas. D’fhéadfá cóitseálaí a fhostú nó iarraidh ar chara nó ar dhuine a bhfuil meas agat orthu cabhrú leat. Inis don duine sin cad é is mian

leat a bhaint amach agus tabhair tuairisc bheag sheachtainiúil dóibh ar mar atá ag éirí leat. Feadfaidh an duine sin cabhrú leat do chuid féinmhuiníne a chothabháil agus spreagadh a thabhairt duit chun do chaighdeáin a ardú. Ní bheidh tú ag iarraidh a admháil gur ghéill tú don chathú, mar sin is mó seans go gcloífidh tú le do phlean. Feicfidh tú dul chun cinn de réir a chéile agus cuirfidh sin le do thiomantas. D’fhéadfá bheith i do mheantóir do dhuine éigin eile chomh maith agus ciorcal cóitseála a chruthú.

ARÍS! Affirmative Rituals, Irresistible Success

Translation

How to Win According to Amy Chua in her book Triple Package; What Really Determines Success, the three characteristics of over-achievers are: 1. Deep-rooted self belief (I can do this); 2. Insecurity (I need to do better, raise my standards); 3. Impulse control (I can see the big picture and resist temptation today to achieve what I want for tomorrow). Which one do you need to work on to become your best self? It may be useful to have a mentor or accountability partner to help you work on each of the three characteristics. You can pay a coach or ask a

30

trusted friend or someone you admire and who inspires you. Tell this person what you want to achieve and report weekly on your progress. This person can help you to maintain your self-belief and encourage you to raise your standards. You won’t want to admit to giving in to impulses so you are more likely to stick to your plan. You will see incremental success which will fuel your commitment. Why not By Sunny become a mentor to JUDDY someone too and create a coaching circle?
