Mercedez-Benz Stadium Location: Atlanta, Georgia Residents: Atlanta Falcons, Atlanta United FC Capacity: 71,000 - 83,000 Design Firm: 360 Architecture, HOK Construction Cost: 1.6 Billion Concept: The owner desired an icon that would be internationally recognized, have an operable roof and set a standard for sustainable large scaled projects. The ruling geometry became the operable roof that operated similar to a camera aperture.

This gave way for 8 distinctive facets. The facet that faced downtown Atlanta was made to be glass, instead of the energy preserving metal panels.

This glazed facet, coupled with the fissure in the bowl, opened the stadium interior up to become the “Window to the city.“ There is a large plaza to the west of the stadium, as an extension to the Olympic plaza. The Plaza overlooks what will be an extremely large zone for die hard fans to tailgate before the game. The Tail gate zone also contains a “Marta” (subterranean public transit) stop to lessen the carbon footprint by allowing patrons to easily access the stadium via public transit. Once completed, the Videoboard that encircles the aperture will be the largest in the world at over 58’ in height and 400 plus feet in length. The videoboard also provides a unique medium for creative visual display and content.

My Role: This was my first professional project coming out of school. I had a very unique and versatile skill set. As a result, I was more of a fireman, someone who could be plugged in at any point along the design process and be of service.

Parametrics and Videoboards Fresh out of school with an intense handle on parametric modeling via Rhino & Grasshopper, I and another team member championed the schematic stages of the building form. We began by scripting the exterior envelope. One of the controls we built in was the ability to quickly and easily change the footprint and scale along the x,y or z axis. The script also had the ability to quickly increase the amount of facets along the ellipse. Fun fact, we held a 10 facet building for a few months before eventually reducing the facet amount to 8. We could also control each facet individually. A flared facet to give more of a proper front door and formal view to the city from within the stadium. It was later also removed for the simpler more pure geometry that you see today. We also built in not only the size of the opening in the roof but also how the trusses and all major structure would adapt as that size was altered. Finally, one of the most useful items the script possessed was the ability to do squarefootage material take-offs as we tweaked the design. We were able to get real-time feedback on cost with every design move. This was essential for clarification with the contractor and the client when discussing value engineering items. As an example, the stadium began entirely as an ETFE gradiated facade. Through the VE process, with the help of the script, we realized that the cooling loads would be too great if we were to maintain this design direction. An insulated metal panel replaced the ETFE on the roof and the sky-facing wall panels. This was a cheaper material and it possessed a better insulative quality, reducing cooling loads. Using the script, we were able to design, analyze, export a model and render within a week. A process that would have taken two to three times the amount of time using traditional computer modeling methods.

As we moved from schematics into design development, the intensity of daily scripting began to settle down. I was then given ownership over the largest videoboard in the world. Design, documentation and coordinating with representatives at various videoboard providers. Culminating in being part of producing the manifest for the videoboard bid process.

Little Caesar’s Arena Location: Detroit, Michigan Residents: Detroit Red Wings, Detroit Pistons Capacity: 15,000 - 20,000 Design Firm: 360 Architecture, HOK Construction Cost: 862.9 Million Concept: An assortment of Kansas City based firms developed the Sprint Center and the Power and Light District in Downtown Kansas City. The Sprint Center is the most successful arena in the United States without having a professional sports team as a resident. The Power and Light District was a newer concept that took an open plaza space that sloped and ended on a stage. The large plaza was covered with a clear ETFE roof to keep out the elements but ensure the feeling of being outside was preserved. The plaza was then surrounded by Bar’s and restaurants on all sides, with the height of two large stories. 360 Architecture had a large hand in coming up with this concept that completely revitalized downtown Kansas City. It was also the starting point for business and developers to see value in the area and thus Kansas City’s urban renaissance had begun. Evident by the continued development of downtown and surrounding areas.

Little Caesar’s Arena took this concept by putting the arena in the center and surrounding it with a covered entertainment district. Little Caesar’s seeks to aid in revitalizing downtown Detroit in the same manner that the Sprint Center and the Power and Light District did for Kansas City.

My Role: My second major project out of school. I was still a fireman but my role had evolved a bit, as I was given ownership of the Upper Concourse to Design, Detail and Document.

The Upper Concourse of the Detroit Red Wings facility was the first time I was able to own a large amount of square-footage within a building. The arena contained numerous different program types. The Concourse contained Bars, restaurants, restrooms, first aid offices, guest services, pseudo-club spaces and sponsor areas and I was to design and document it all. A few ancillary items I also had on my radar was the “Via,“ the promenade and bridge structure that surrounded the arena facade. As a result, railing details and custom light stanchions were also a part of my documentation effort. The arena facade was beautifully designed by a fellow teammate, however anything beyond the metal panels, such as the archway opening shroud and the ceiling planes were my domain. My coordination role was also expanded. I was tasked with coordinating with lighting consultants, sign-age and graphic consultants in addition to your more common structural and MEP consultants. I was also given tasks outside of the upper concourse that pertained to the entire arena. I worked with my fellow designers on the project to surmise their vision but I documented and detailed all interior glazed walls. I was also tasked with the door schedule, in an arena this size, there were over 20 different door types and more than 1000 doors in total. All them with different fire rating and security requirements. These two are examples of the less glamorous tasks but I was able to work through the process and produce for the team.

Hallmark Urban Village Location: Kansas City, Missouri Owner: Milhaus Development Capacity: 450 Units Design Firm: HOK Construction Cost: 83 Million Concept: The owner desired a fairly large housing complex to sit on a hill with 50ft of grade change and a 5/6 split wood frame construction constraint.

That is not much of a concept, as it is more construction and code challenges. We imposed our own concept on the project to be good urbanist and provide a place that art, nature and architecture all harmoniously coexisted. We started with the standard texas wrap. Parking garage in the center and units surrounding the garage. This meant half the units faced an undesirable garage facade. We pushed the garage to the street side that had another garage across the street. We then cut the donut, which made bars that fortuitously walked up the hill with the grade. It also allowed for light penetration into the interior courtyards, as the openings were south facing. A meandering route was added that cut through all buildings and courtyards to unite the complex as one.

My Role: Taking a hiatus from sports architecture with my third large project out of school was a great change of pace. My team size shrunk from 20 to 3 and my role significantly expanded. Our firm was the design architect for the master-plan and exterior facades. I was responsible for all aspects of the project, with oversight and consult from a superior.

Hallmark Urban Village As a result of the building geometry, it gave way to a significant amount of landscape. The landscape design became the star of the project. It was an immensely enjoyable experience to work hand in hand with our in-house landscape architects. We gave every courtyard a different character, not only to add variety of the view from the individual units but also to provide an assortment of different amenities for the resident to experience. The “Den“ was the quiet courtyard, with plenty of shade, cushy seating, and a residents only cafe. The pool deck is for the swimmers and sunbathers. There is also a significant amount of open space to gather, party and most important, Bar-B-Que. The “Dog Park“ is a space to let residents who have dogs play and socialize, owner and pet alike. There is also a public plaza that is flanked by a Cafe and an amphitheater from impromptu performances.

Philip’s Arena Location: Atlanta, Georgia Owner: Atlanta-Fulton County, Recreation Authority Residents: Atlanta Hawks Capacity: 17,000 Design Firm: HOK Construction Cost: $192.5 Million Concept: Philip’s Arena had an existing 4 story suite wall on the west side of the arena bowl that did not sell. As a result of the suite wall the concourses did not have a 360 degree connection, which hindered the flow of the arena. HOK sought out to fix these issues by breaking down the wall for a more egalitarian seating product, as well as complete the 360 degree connection of both major concourses.

HOK was also tasked with updating existing clubs and suite products, while adding new millennial focused concourse amenities and sponsored party decks. A new look and feel was desired for the arena. The owner wanted a consistent palette but also had a desire for each quadrant to have it’s own idiosyncratic nature. The theming was able to change between quadrant along with the primary sponsor, however the detailing and material palette remained similar.

My Role: The fourth and most current large project out of school, Philip’s Arena, provide me with my biggest role in the sports market to date. I was again given the upper concourse to design and document. However, I had the bowl elements, the two sponsor towers and the sixth man box, added to my responsibilities as well. I also again reprized my role as “fireman” to put out any fires that may have arose throughout the design and documentation for the entire project.

Philip’s Arena The Swing Suite - In a joint venture with top golf and an effort to add new and unique amenities, swing suites were introduced. A typical 50 person party suite with a twist. A virtual golfing area was added to the suite for patrons to play before, after and if their heart desired during a game. The Suites are also a source of additional revenue as they could be rented out during non-game days.

Atlanta Brew Pub - A full brewery complete with pub centric food options. Atlanta Brew Pub is an area for the beer connoisseur to come and try beer locally, nationally and from around the world. The design of the space was based on a typical beer garden which just happened to have a great view to Atlanta Hawks basketball games.

The Six - As the suite wall was taken down for the introduction of general admission amphitheater, the place needed an amenity to create a unique experience. “The Six,” a play on the sixth man is a place for the most passionate fans to call home.

The box acts as a megaphone to apply the fan’s passion.

The Hawk Bar - The first on-court bar in NBA history. It is the place to see and be seen, as the bar will easily be visible from anywhere in the bowl and on television as it is in the sight-line of the main follow camera. It is also an great opportunity to sell sponsorship with the prominent presence the bar poses.

The Swag Shop - Brain child of rapper “Killer Mike” the swag shop is a staple in Atlanta. There is an intense desire to bring the hip-hop culture that is, so central to Atlanta into the arena. What better way to accomplish this then with a barbershop, the cultural discussion hub of Hip Hop culture. You are able to receive a fade while watching the game.

Esports // Adrian Phillips Theater HOK was approached to study the Adrian Phillips theater in Atlantic City. The building was located incredibly off the Atlantic City boardwalk not far from the pier which contains carnival activities. The theater fell into disrepair and the theater bookings were coming in at a low rate. HOK was tasked to initiate a bit of youthful energy by renovating the theater to accommodate Esports events. The Theater is historically relevant and the character had to be maintained. Typically this would prove to be difficult with the modern and even futuristic tone that Esports tends to take on. Our team however, noticed the realm of gaming wasn’t exclusively Tron based. There was an interesting energy that was created with merging the historical nature of the Theater with Pelicans (the hanging Helicopter elements) and LED screens. We pursued the juxtapose aesthetic and it was something that our client gravitated towards.

We wanted to make sure that we were providing an experience that had yet to become the archetype of Esports as the concept is being developed by designers around the world on a daily basis. Acknowledging what we gathered from visiting Comicon, CES and Gamecon, we saw that the patronage of Esports enjoyed the immersive experience. Creating a fully built out Concept world/ Disney-esque atmosphere for adults. VR Lounges were utilized for completely immersive game experiences while being able to maintain a sociability with your group of friends. We wanted to chase the special experience with the service we were to provide. We used robots to bring out food and drinks after you ordered from an app on your phone. As Esports events last hours to days, we wanted to provide powered sleeper pods, so a patron could recharge themselves and their electronics. We also wanted to provide live stream booths that were acoustically rated and had top of the line audio and video equipment for online streaming sessions.

Lastly, we wanted to provide versatility to the theater. We showed options that allowed 80 gamers to have an in-house LAN party. There is an end-stage option that allows an audience to experience the best gamers in the world live and in living color.

Professional basketball, meet Tampa Bay. With the addition of the NBA Tampa Bay Boom, the WNBA Tampa Bay Angels, and the NBA G League Tampa Bay Palms, the St. Petersburg community will be energized and enlivened. The NBA, WNBA and NBA G League will experience valuable growth in the region. The teams, the design, construction, and operations efforts to support them will generate valuable jobs, ample economic growth, continued real estate development opportunities, while simultaneously allowing the community to enjoy one of America’s favorite pastimes. Help us build a legacy and make St. Petersburg, Florida the new home for the Tampa Bay Boom, Tampa Bay Angels, and Tampa Bay Palms!

My Role: I was tasked with Developing the exterior envelope, spinning the bowl ensuring optimal site lines and overall masterplan development. The envelope with the diagonal louvres allowed views into the arena at only head on perspectives. This created an interesting experience as you walked/ boated around the arena seeing, certain key features at different vantage points. The movement of the facade also hearkened back to a visual melody as the clients amassed their fortune through music.

Stormont Vail SW Clinic Location: Topeka, Kansas Owner: Stormont Vail Health Center Size: 50,000sf Design Firm: HOK Construction Cost: 13 Million Concept: HOK was tasked with developing a medical office building, which contains a Medical Spa, Dermatology and Primary Care. The program is highly interior driven and the most efficient shape happened to be a rectangular bar to service all the patients optimally. This did not provide much leeway when conceptualizing for the exterior massing. 3 concepts pulling from natural forms were presented and “The Brook” was the selection the client made. The concept was to separate you from the environment you were coming from and immerse you in the natural spa like environment. Berms surround the building at the base to block views into the exam rooms from the exterior and from the exam room you can see the garden. On the second level the concept was to bring natural light deep into primary care to again maintain that connection with nature, being able to see the sky and take in the benefits of natural sunlight.

18th and Vine

18th and Vine Historic District Location: Kansas City, Missouri Owner: City of Kansas City Design Firm: HOK Construction Cost: $27 Million HOK was tasked with masterplanning the Historic 18th and Vine District by the City of Kansas City.

18th and Vine has a rich history of Jazz, baseball and because of redlining, the center of Black commerce. A few events that made the space special.

One minorities being cut-off from the rest of society developed their own district of commerce, complete with doctors, lawyers, reporters and even the first black owned automobile dealership.

Second, as the prohibition never really took hold in Kansas City, the city became a destination from interested parties all throughout the country. It is said that Jazz was born in New Orleans but grew up in Kansas City. With the likes of Count Bassie and Charlie “Bird“ Parker pushing the culture/music forward.

Third, the charter for Negro Leagues Baseball was signed in the 18th and Vine district. Initiating the beginning of black athletes being able to participate in America’s favorite past time. Leading to Jackie Robinson being drafted and breaking the color barrier for organized sports.

After a bustling run as one of the most incredible hot beds of music, sports and commerce. The redlining was lifted, and people were free to live where they desired. This caused the district to fall on hard times. The ongoing masterplan study serves to revitalize the district while preserving the history to bring 18th and Vine back to it’s former glory 46

Monarch Plaza The Roberts building, an automotive complex and haberdashery located in the Vine district presented an interesting precedent that would come to help craft the architecture associated with Monarch plaza. The base building being the typical facade at the time with crown moldings, dentals and large storefront windows to show of the product.

Above, signage and marquee to let you know what was housed in the retail space from afar. The scale however, was not typical as the signs were proportionally half the height of the retail facade.

The famous photographer JR sought out to further humanize the residents living in economically challenged regions of the world. He executed this by enlarging pictures of the residents to iconic proportions.

Speaking with the residents of the area there is real fear of gentrification and a complete annihilation of the rich cultural history that is often associated with outside developers building in minority populated, economically challenged areas.

The “House of Hits” the small brick building that bisects the plaza is historically relevant and had to be maintained. This presented an opportunity to adaptively re-use the building and add garage doors to each side uniting the plaza into one gesture. within the building a small cafe/bar was to be added to service the plaza as a whole. The Cab Calloway statue and the golden chalice were symbols that a local influencer asked the city to include in the design. They provide the centralized energy for each individual plaza.

Dairy Farmers of America // Stair Detailing Located in Kansas City, Kansas, the new corporate headquarters for Dairy Farmers on America a multi billion dollar business. Most of all the dairy products produced in America have an allegiance to this organization. I was not on this project full-time. I moonlighted with another team in the office when Hallmark Urban Village went through its project lulls. Having recently received LEED GA status at the time, the firm thought it would be good to put my new found credentials to good use.

I headed up gathering LEED points for our in-house design team and the consultants. LEED status is still pending but the goal was for the project to achieve LEED silver. In th photo above there is a glass staircase that spans 3 stories. I was also charged with detailing the staircase. I choose the railing fasteners and the glass gradient, that was to resemble an emptying glass of milk. I also detailed through the leather hand rail that was to resemble cow hide, as well as the leather bench that surrounded the stair. The bench was an elegant way to maneuver around cane detection code. The glass baffles that surrounded the ceiling of the stair was a visually minimal way to accommodate for smoke baffles. These solutions are a few of the examples of what made a great space that the client loves for its aesthetics as well as elegant solutions to functional issues. They are well on their way to filling the headquarters and there is a possibility of complex expansion in the near future.

Twin Creeks // Competition Twin Creeks competition was administered by the parks commission of North Kansas City. This project was not an inoffice project but our small design team received support from the firm in the pursuit to winning the competition. The project was done completely in the teams spare time over a two week period. The Parks Commission stated a desire to add a unique and iconic destination point along the twin creeks. They also expressed the frustration of residents who dealt with constant flooding issues during heavy rains. Our teams concept was to solve both issues with one solutions. The solution we came up with was to dig out the creek a bit deeper and pave a half-pipe as a water reservoir with drainage. The flooding season was typically early spring. This meant that most of the time during the summer and into the fall, the creek would be dry. The 3 plus mile long half-pipe then became an attraction for skaters and bikers alike. The ability to practice tricks and ride along the side of the walls on sharp curves would provide a unique low-maintenance attraction for the city to advertise. A walking path was also added to weave with the bike path. The spaces between the paths became a folly park, that acted as artful breadcrumbs as you made your way though the park. The ending to the park culminated in a viewing tower the allowed three hundred and sixty degree views of the Northland. The tower doubled as a layered vertical garden that would help supply the farmers market plaza below. The plaza is a large open paved space with all the essential amenities such as restrooms. Small structures surrounded the plaza for local vendors to bring and sell their products, mostly produce but also had the option of any retail concept the resident desired.

The large plaza then fell into an amphitheater for small plays, poetry readings, story times, comedy shows and concerts, during the day or under the Northland stars. Our team ended up not winning the competition, however the team and the firm thought it was a great and innovative idea.

Color and Couture // KC Fashion Show Color and Couture is the annual fashion show administered by the local IIDA branch. Each firm in Kansas City is selected at random to team up with a material product representative. Teams are tasked with designing and building a dress with unconventional materials that range from floor tile to wall vinyl and everything in between. Every firms effort culminates in a fashion show where all the dresses and the models rock the runway and go head to head in front of a panel of esteem judges. Various awards are given out to teams for different categories. However, not every team wins as there are usually 25 plus firms participating and only 8 awards administered.

At our firm the teammate that usually heads up our team, had to take her maternity leave. She saw my passion for design and fashion and passed me the torch of running our team. This meant I had to guide design, manage the budget and be a leader of my peers that consisted of 15 members, with only two males including myself. I was also tasked with choosing a model and keeping her pleased throughout the process. i created the mix for the runway music. I also made sure to delegate tasks to teammates, as to lighten the load on myself and give every team member a sense of belonging and ownership as this again was an unpaid extracurricular venture. The dress was mostly designed by committee but I made sure that our final product was one cohesive thought. We went with the trendy backless leather crop top. I knew the judges would respond well to the drama of a dress with a long train but I also wanted to keep it modern and not matronly with the cut of the dress. We had our silhouette chosen but we struggled with the patterning on the dress. While this was happening, we found it difficult to get in-touch with our rep throughout the process. Three weeks away from the fashion show we learned of the news that she had lost her fight with cancer. Our team was devastated. As there was nothing we could truly do, I wanted to show our support for cancer research to find a cure. I said why don’t we use a layered ribbon on the dress pattern, not really telling the team at the time that this ribbon was in the image of the ribbon for cancer research. It created a great aesthetic effect and I later told the team the reasoning behind the patterning post competition, as I did not want this to factor into the judges decision. The day came for our model to rock the runway and she was magnificent. We won that day, a trophy for best use of color. It was an arduous and difficult experience, that truly paid off in the end.

Arena in Las Vegas // Competition Our firm was tasked with concepting an arena a few blocks off the strip in Las Vegas, Nevada. We were given two weeks. I however, was not brought on the project until the Friday prior to the Monday deadline. i was initially tasked with using Grasshopper 3D to pull all the buildings, sidewalks and street works for the site. I then took sketches from our design lead to model the plinth that the building was to sit on which contained parking retail and an amphitheater. We were holding two building designs and I was tasked with coming up with a third. The arena bowl was already designed. We wanted the envelope to be as tight to the bowl as possible to lessen the cost of the entire project. This is what you see with the darker envelope that was to be a full LED screen. We also understood that this was Vegas and we needed to add some razzle-dazzle with the secondary envelope that housed the ancillary functions of the building. Designed in the image of an exotic sports car, the secondary envelope generated the excitement that has come to be expected in association with Vegas. This design was produced in a few days and was presented to the client following. Although, we did not have the best interviewing experience with the client, we ended up winning the project.

CiCo Park Natatorium

Cico Park is a small public park located in Manhattan, Kansas. The park is situated across the street from a local high school and houses the high schools football and baseball concourses. These concourses also double as public fields when not being utilized by the student atheletes. One unfortunate aspect of the high schools athletic program is a lack of a swimming hall. The same problem is presented for the entire city of Manhattan as there is only one pool in town. The city of Manhattan and the local high school have granted a small portion of CiCo Park to be sited as the location of the city’s and the high school’s new natatorium.

Cico Park Natatorium is designed around the experience of the spectator. The architecture forces all view points first to the pool and then out into the surrounding landscape. Viewpoints are also channeled by the implied elipse that the stairs, louvres and bleachers follow.

The ground floor experience is one of compression and mass. The spectator will descend down the steps along the elipse that takes them out to the nature and then brings them back into the viewing area. The spectator is now compressed by the mass of the two foot thick precast walls and the mass of the water density contatined within the massive swim tanks. The spectator is now contained within the lap pools viewing area where they can view the swimmers from a completely different perspective under the pool. This view point is more advantageous for the viewer, as there is less splashing. This creates a clarity between the spectator and the swimmer, where the swimmers form and grace are highlighted. Beyond the viewpoint of the pool is the landscape of the park. The line between architecure and nature begins to be blurred as they begin to become visual compliments to each other.

Sectionally for the first floor the experience to be invoked is of a light and airy void. Outside of the main pool space all of the support spaces such as locker rooms, offices and the snackbar are housed within thier own translucent mass. This enforces the first floors feel of lightness but provides the necessary standard of privacy that each space calls for. The first floor is to provide the diving pool spectator with the most advantageous view which is between the bottom of the diving board where the diver begins and the pools surface where the diver finishes. The bleachers along the elipse, elevates the spectator to the necessary viewing height to maximize the experience.

Lap Pool Although the space is of competion and rivalry. As the day progresses and the competitors leave, the space at twilight and into the night begins to transform into an area of euphoric tranquility and calm. The Dynamacy of the architecture creates a soothing rhythm that will relax any leftover spectator into a state of peace.

Observation Level | Lap Pool The spectators are able to look up, out and through the top of the water. The spectator is surrounded by the waters mass while being able to look out to the landscape. The architecture begins to take on a feel that of a surrealist painting of flying fish, swimming birds and underwater park space.

Raising A Roof: 4 Ideas For the fifth straight year, the United States Open men’s final was pushed back a day, to Monday, because of weather problems. This tournament had its share of interruptions — which means the chorus of complaints resumed about the lack of a roof over courts at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

The Australian Open has retractable roofs on two courts at Melbourne Park and plans for a third; Centre Court at Wimbledon added a retractable roof in 2009; and the new Roland Garros stadium with a retractable roof is expected to make its debut at the French Open in 2017. But United States Tennis Association officials have said that Arthur Ashe Stadium, built on a swamp-like ash dump, could not absorb the weight of a roof that would cover its expanse.

How hard would it be to overcome those obstacles? Not very, at least for the students at Kansas State University’s College of Architecture, Planning and Design, one of the nation’s top architecture programs. The New York Times invited them to brainstorm how they might keep the rain out of Arthur Ashe Stadium without putting too much weight on the weak soil. They were given 48 hours to do it. Here are their proposals.

02 // Away from Stadium The Iris The roof evolved out of the idea of a lightweight tensile structure capable of spanning distances, with minimal additional weight, into a hybrid structure of tension and compression with high tensile fabric, steel cables and tubing inspired by the mechanisms of an iris, like that of a camera. Sixteen triangular shapes rotate on individual fixed axes that open and close. Buttresslike structures surround the stadium, producing a clear juxtaposition of heavy compressive elements and light tension members that extend into the sky.

Folding Planes

The Space Frame

The energy and movement of a tennis game inspired us to create a rhythmic pattern of folding planes. The origamilike form adds structural stability and provides opportunities for dynamic displays of light through reflection and perforation. The folded planes frame the sky to the east and west, sheltering the stadium. The form allows the natural beauty and light of the sky to permeate the roof through a semitranslucent plastic composite material that encloses the voids of the folded-plane structure.

We took inspiration from the composition of a tennis racket. The geometric webbing of a racket creates one large, uniform structural whole.

This led us to creating a steel space frame, composed of an organic geometry that could be stretched and molded around the stadium. The frame is clad with glass over the seats and the court, while being left open where it is not needed to aid in ventilation. We then extended our geometry from the space frame into the interior of the stadium to create undulating sun shades that make a textural and interesting ceiling.

Drip_Ripple The Drip_Ripple was a studio wide effort to create a unique design element to be placed within the studio. It is an art installation born out of competition and collaboration. A studio wide competition was held on an individual basis between the sixteen members. The top three ideas were selected and expounded upon by small groups of five, five and six.

The top idea was then voted upon and was then pursued by the entirety of the class each individual giving their own design input and processing help. The resultant form was the Drip_Ripple a water like ripple that began at a key display nodal point within the studio and faded out to the far reaches of the classroom. The result was a incomparable lighting affect within the studio as well as a flowing experience of compression and expansion produced by the ceiling level changes of the wave and the shifting densities of the circles that set an incredible studio experience in which to design under through out the rest of the semester.

Grasshopper 3D Script There were three primary parameters of the script the intensity of the wave, the density of the voronoi pattern, and the processing of getting the form out of the computer. The intensity of the wave was controlled by a range function that controlled the frequency as well as the amplitude of the resulting wave surface. Once the surface was established, the voronoi pattern was projected upon the surface, increasing the pieces final formal complexity. The weight of the voronoi pattern was set up by point densities that were the most dense at the center of the drip, that then dispursed as the waves frequency decreased. Finally parameters had to be established to unroll and number each circle individually within the voronoi pattern so that they could be cut and assembled.

Production One sided corrogated cardboard was selected as the final material becuase of the materials flexibility as well as its rigidity. Once the material was selected and the voronoi’s pattern was unrolled within the computer. Then the individual components had to be taken to a small 32” x 18” laser cutter to be cut and numbered. Each flat peice that was cut out, was then rolled into its circular form. Each individual circular form was then assemled into its small section before being glued to the ceiling as part of the final whole. The lowered ceiling plane was made up of a system of one hundred fifty pound microfilament braided fishing wire set to a grided system. Paperclips were hot glued to the fishing wire and between the cardboards corrogation to give it an almost seamless final look. A lighting package was added above the final piece to highlight the final form’s densities. The Lighting package followed the same thought of the point densities as the voltage intensity of the light was the highest near the central point of the drip and then declined in voltage intenstity as the drips frequency dispursed.

iLibrary iLibrary is a revamped service model for the modern library. Instead of a patron looking up what book they want and rifling through rows and rows of stacks trying to find the book they want they can now simply checkout one iPad and the library’s entire collection in the palm of their hand. The monotony of book finding is replaced with the enjoyment of the book in the unique spatial experience that has been designed for the patron’s enjoyment.

Book to Light Louis Kahn’s Exeter Library was famously designed for the patron to go to the stacks, collect their books and bring it out to the edges of the library to the windows where they could read in the presence of natural sunlight.

iPad to Darkness Chiaroscuro Library was designed with a similar thought to Kahn’s but simply differed in the sense of the inversion of the idea. The patron would checkout their iPad from the stacks and take it to the darkness of the reading room. Truthfully no one wants to sit in darkness, in public, with strangers, so the design was modified to take the iPad to ambient or better yet indirect light so that the reader may enjoy their book in solitude.

Lounge of Relaxation The Adult Reading Room was designed as a lounge area for mature patrons of library to sit and relax in a soothing setting to enjoy reading. Desktop workstations were introduced in the lounge to aid in a heavy research effort or a intense work session. Although the main seating element runs the length of the entire library floor, it is spatially subdivided by implied seperation of space through a compartmentalized furniture arrangement. The cieling plane hieghts modulation is used to differentiate between the intimacy of each individual space while still providing for a relatively open floor plan. The hanging spheres are a unique furniture element that can be spun to provide for either a group discussion with other patrons on the couch or turned to provide a private reading experience of becoming completely lost within the story.

Connecting with Nature The Teen Reading Room reestablishes the connetion between nature and reading. Chiaroscuro Library is sited well within the heart of an urbane setting in downtown Kansas City’s Crossroads district. As a result it is easy to lose touch with the natural environment. The Provision of the iPad also presents a security threat in which any sensible librarian cannot allow the Patrons to simply leave and read the book within a natural setting. However, this concern has been designed against by introducing vegetation to the interior of the Library’s tri-story light well. The connection of nature has now been reestablished as a patron can relish the opportunity of being able to read within the majesty of the natural environment. A custom designed furniture element was introduced in the teen reading room titled endless seating. The title has a direct relation with the form as the seat is wrapped upward which becomes the structure and then wrapped across to become the table, suggesting a endless ribboning effect on which adolenscent patrons can finish homework upon.

Void of Mass The Children’s Reading Room was designed as a void of mass and a wash of light in which to be lost within. Instead of the introduction of furniture, holes in the floor were cut and nets were added to fill the gap. The nets are adjacent to the libray’s light well in which if you look down you can see the top of the tree canopy and if you look up you can see the sky. This provides the feel of floating or flight, as you are almost weightlessly suspended within the nets. These emotions enhance the whimsy of any book the child is reading.

Panzi Chair The Panzi Chair’s measurements and proportions are directly derived from the Windsor chair. Grasshopper, a algorithmic modeling software that parametrically controls form generation through computer scripting and mathematic functions was implemented as a design tool. Parameters defining the script matched the original proportions of the Windsor chair. These parameters consisted of leg height, back height, seat width, chair and back angle of the Windsor Chair. The intriguiging aspect about the Windsor, and the reason it was chosen, was its use of interpolation. The chair uses two contrasting curves, divides them into points, and interpolates between those points. This method is similar to world renowned architect Santiago Calatrava.

Calatrava designs bridges and architectural structures that seem to defy gravity with a complex simplicity. After the base profile was designed based on the precedent, the Windsor Chair. The derived profile curves were then interpolated. This produces an experience complete suspension. The cantilever of the chair and the weave of the cables that make up the seat plane result in a sense of floating. The introduction of the cantilever posed an issue with the use of wood, but as the settlers did, a material that is suitable to its function was used. Tubular steel gave the chair a more modern look while providing the necessary structure for the task at hand. The tubular steel allows for a slight deflection, raising the legs to a lounge position for better blood circulation, as well as a comfortable lean back of the chair for proper relaxation.

Gallery Staircase As main gallery is lifted off the ground and above the street, the gallery looses contact with the unban edge which is the primary selling point and the reason for storefront architecture. This issue is however, solved by the staircase that connects the small ground floor gallery to the main elevated gallery.

While becoming a gallery in its own right diplaying specially selected show pieces that act as breadcrumbs, attracting would be customers up to the second level off the main street plane.

Retailer Profit Margin Following the 2008 recession, the retail industry’s research of their own profit margin showed that high-end retailers increased their profit margin even after the 2008 recession.

Studies showed that the reason for this was retailtainment (retail entertainment) each store had some aspect of entertainment or programming space in addition to the original floor plan.

Gallery Lookout The Gallery Lookout provides a venue for the gallery customers to visually witness the sectional dynamacy of the architecture. This unique viewpoint provides sightlines to the acitvity of the gallery and the surrounding city. The acitivity of the ground level cafe’ and adjacent plaza can be observed. The second level gallery roof garden is also within the visual grasp of the lookout, as patrons can observe other customers enjoy the city’s skyline or watch as they take in the unique form of the envelope that encapsulates the furniture gallery.

Tanager Masterplan

Tanager Masterplan Studio.MMCX was commissioned by Risavika Havn, a harbor authority in Tanager. Tanager is a small harbor town on the western coast of Norway near Stavanger the oil capital of Europe. Risavika Havn realizing that thier town was on the cusp of an economic and population boom, proactively began looking for meaningful ways to develop and inteligently grow their region and diversify their economy. Oil has been the catalyst for the regions growth and prosperity. However, with any growth process that has been expedited by economic proficiencies, sprawl has become a major concern. Sprawl threatens to take over the regions agricultural land which is responsible for 30 percent of Norway’s food production. Sprawl has also placed a heavy bearing on the regions current transportive infrastructure. There is little history and meaning on the path Tanager is currently taking. With the current growth rate being sustained, the population in the region is projected reach to one million people by 2110 which would be one hundred fifty thousand in the greater Tanager area.

In order to sufficiently satisfy the increase in the area’s population density, intelligent growth will be essential to the region’s success.

Tanager Study There is a rich history that is associated with Tanager that dates back hundreds of years.

The presence of the oil industry in the area has attracted a highly educated specialty skill set working class to the area. With the established history and influx of intellectual talent, Tanager is seething with potential. This potential needs to be cultivated by future growth and the establishment of the knowledge economy.

In a knowledge economy knowledge is a resource, tool, and product. It is an infinite source that utilizes the intellectual capital of the creative class. The creative class consists of interdisciplinary groups of economists, scientists, computer programers, engineers, architects, artists, and professions of the like.

Zoning in the future Tananger will need to be dense and embrace diversity. Growth will need to be meaningful be built on ideals like beauty, love, memories, history, wealth, society, and culture. In order to look forward and design for the creative class we must look toward the past before the automobile when cities based on how far one could carry a bucket of water.

Studio.MMCX based Tananger on a series of districts each based on a one mile walkable diameter. Growth will be limited to these districts and each will contain all the necessities of a major city called parts. Each of these parts will need to be triangulated with another part in order to foster unique, diverse interaction that will activate the place.

This interaction will set up the bonds within the community and will create a wholistic community that will eventually form and create itself.

Three major axes were extrapolated as the backbone of the region, as they are the main axes of supply and regional circulation. These axes establish four major regions, which is a thought that harkens back to the Roman Empire and the establishment of the Cardo and Decumanus which orders the city with efficiency and simplicity. The four districts were then further broken down into smaller more walkable neighborhoods.

All major neighborhoods are triangulated with each other to provide a smooth flow throughout the city.The enhanced implementation and use of public transportation will allow the population to ease of flow between districts and neighborhoods throughout the region. A further enhancement between land and sea will emphasize and express the regions long standing history and culture and relationship with the sea. The harbor itself will evolve over time to adapt to changing needs of the region over time. Agriculture will be integrated into the urban fabric of the city to utilize local resources and emphasize green living. Tananger in 2110 will be a thriving city that embraces the knowledge economy and will act as an example for meaningful growth and prosperity.

ALGORITHMIC PROCESS: Aesop’s Lounge // Darius Hollwell

method/intent Rhino + Grasshopper was used to generate a parametric lounge that can be sized according to the customers body.

Shape, Profile lines, Vaneer Species, Seat angle, Length (Seat and Back), Width (Seat and Back), Thickness of Material, Height of overall Lounge. These parameters allow a manufacturer to quickly iterate a lounge to personally customize the lounge to taylor fit a consumer. In addition to the parameters for the consumer, the formwork used to make the lounge is also parametrically driven so no matter what the specification the manufacturer can quickly produce the product.

Defining Curves The top Circular edge of the cone is first taken as the base geometry to orient the rest of the curves within. An ellipse is then imposed within the circle with all the measurements of the consumer as the parameters for the size and shape of the Lounge. Aesthetic profile edges are then introduced to give the lounge style and make entering and exiting the lounge easier.

Cone - Seat The top cone is what gives the lounge its three dimensional geometry. As the depth and the radius change, so does the optimal seat angle for ensured comfort.

Cone - Leg The Half cone is based on a tangent line to the seat cone to ensure optimal capatibility.

The hieght and degree of the bottom cone’s arc is parametric and can be changed to the user’s desire. The half cone is the base geometry for the legs that gives the cone its form.

Bolt Holes Bolt holes are necessary to combine the two cones together along their tangent lines. The size of the holes are parametric to increase of decrease the accomdation size for the bolt. the positioning as well as the number of holes are also parametric so that the manufacturer can make adjustments as they see fit.

Lace Holes The lace holes provide space for the nylon strings to pass through. After the wood is cut on the CNC router after and it has been unrolled in rhino the nylon lace acts as formwork to bring the geometry back to its original 3d geometry.

Formwork - Seat The formwork for the seat is necessary so that the four layers of bending ply can keep the correct form as the glue dries between the layers. Traditionally bending ply is placed in a vacuum bag so that it can be formed but due to the conical geometry custom made formwork had to be designed.

Iterations Due to the project being scripted and not simply modeled some quick iterations are easily possible. The first iteration is a sleek modern baby’s cradle, that can hold any new born bundle of joy. The iteration is a chair for any consumer who doesn’t want or cannot the accomidate the size of the lounge. Finally the last two iterations show the capabilities of scripting as the lounge can be taylor fit to its future user.
