A chi si addentra in questa regione si offre, stagliandosi nella ricca vegetazione, lo scenario mozzafiato di oltre quaranta templi coperti dai caratteristici tetti spioventi a pagoda, con porte intarsiate in oro e splendide statue di Buddha. I monaci se ne prendono cura, coprendole con le tipiche stoffe rosso/arancio e venerandole col medesimo rispetto che a loro stessi è rivolto dalla popolazione. Delle statue del Buddha, in particolare, le poco distanti grotte di Pak Ou ospitano migliaia di esemplari. Si narra che nel XVI sec., il re Setthatirath volle proteggere la sua personale e ricchissima collezione dall’incombente invasione birmana, affidandola così al ventre della terra di questa regione. Già nella barca che conduce alla zona delle grotte si resta spiazzati alla vista dell’imponente parete di roccia verticale dove è ricavata l’apertura principale; si scorge subito la bianca scalinata in pietra in cima alla quale, sul parapetto, sono posate le prime delle innumerevoli statue conservate all’interno. Nella migliore tradizione dell’arte buddhista, gli occhi amigdaloidi dai contorni netti, il sorriso cristallizzato e riproposto uguale a se stesso su ogni esemplare, la superficie levigata del volto e il contrasto con la chioma riccia e chiaroscurale caratterizzano ogni singolo pezzo.
Il Buddha è presente nell’ombra e nella leggera nebbia dell’interno delle grotte, una, cento e mille volte, protetto dalla roccia e immerso in un’atmosfera mistica e silenziosa.
Whoever enters this region is offered the breathtaking scenery, protruding through the lush vegetation, of more than forty temples covered with the characteristic pagoda roofs, doors inlaid with gold, and beautiful statues of Buddha. The monks, who look after them, are dressed in the typical red/orange swaddling cloth and are venerated with the same respect that they bestow on the population. Regarding the statues of the Buddha, in the not too distant Pak Ou caves, you will find the home to thousands of specimens. It is said that in the sixteenth century, King Setthatirath wanted to protect his personal, rich collection from the impending invasion of Burma, and so entrusted it to the belly of the earth in this region. While in the boat leading to the caves, you will be awed by the sight of the impressive vertical rock cliff where the main opening is. Here, you are faced with a white stone staircase and at its top, on the parapet, are positioned the first of countless statues kept there. In the best tradition of Buddhist art, the almond-shaped eyes and the crystallized smile are reproduced exactly on each piece with the smooth surface of the face and the contrasting dark curly hair characterizing each individual piece.

Fra le rinunce alle quali i monaci non possono derogare c’è anche quella di non potere svolgere alcuna professione, dipendendo quindi dalla generosità dei credenti. Luang Prabang.
