ABOUT ME

Hi! I am a 25 year old architecture student with a huge passion for product design (chairs and such).

By seeing the differences between my hometown Caracas, Venezuela, and Spain, I’ve become very interested in how culture molds architecture and urbanism.

Right now I am focused on learning as much as I can, while developing skills that can help me, help you.

A friend from Ecuador, two friends from Germany and myself (from Venezuela), dived into an amazing architecture competition for students.

Design the MIES MEMORIAL LIBRARY.

The question fueling the project was: how do we make a building that honors Mies Van der Rohe, without recreating the same mistakes he made to maintain his modern architectural view? (no more lawsuits from Edith Farnsworth).

We needed a shape that fits next to the crown hall, right in the middle of his campus (IIT), so as to maintain the same height, and maintain a lightweight ground floor for casual visitors, the big collections are in the basement and

Main entrance

The library has a general collection of books and magazines and a specialized section for all of Mies studies, books, blueprints etc. A small 60 person auditorium for expositions. A cafeteria, and lots of different reading/ working stations, depending on what the user wants to do.

All of the spaces revolve around an inner patio, that makes the basement feel open and confortable.

The skylight on top makes it possible for the brise soleil in the first floor to protect books and users from direct, horizontal sun rays.

Ever since the industrial revolution, Spain has experienced a significant migration from its central regions to the big cities. This phenomenon is commonly referred to as “La España vacía” or “the empty Spain”. As a result, many towns across the country are grappling with a declining population and economic resources.

Our project aims to address this issue by proposing the design of a small hotel in “Viñas Viejas”, a location near the town of Los Pedrones. The primary objective of this project is to attract more tourists to the region, allowing them to explore and appreciate the stunning oliveyard landscapes that “Viñas Viejas” has to offer.

The name of the building, comes from the idea of creating a small “rural city” all contained in our plot, with its own skyline created by the architecture and the nature that can be seen from diferent locations of the place.

The materiality of the buildings was chosen carefully to blend into the sorroundings, by continuing the masonry wall that holds the platforms as a base, and placing on top wooden “cabin” like forms in respond to traditional architecture of the place.

The hotel is scattered around the plot with different buildings. The public / administrative buildings and the rooms (or cabins) are located along the main path of the site, wich invites the guests to walk down the platforms of olive trees, and enjoy the astonishing views that go far beyond our plot, down into other plots and fields of the area.

“Desierto de las Palmas” is a natural park, 30 minutes north of Valencia where you can find the ruins of an old convent from the VXIII century that belongs to the religious organization “Carmelitas descalzas”.

Devoted people living in silence, prayers, and working on their gardens. Those are the carmelita’s main values.

This project consists of using the site next to the ruins (their old orchard) to build a temporary exposition for the spanish abstract painter, Manuel Rey Fueyo.

View from entrance

To create an experience worthy of the place and the art, the two most important factors were Silence and Light.

The place needed to keep its religious aura, so the intervention respects the history of the place.

An experience of solitude, to connect to God and oneself.

The main idea was to design different rooms depending on the paintings inside.

The feelings of the painting would dictate the box containing them.

This idea transformed into 3 different little rooms. Unconnected, but part of a whole.

“La Albufera” is the biggest lake in La Comunidad Valenciana. Located 30 minutes south of Valencia, and just 10 minutes from the beach El Saler, this protected ecosistem of 211 KM, has been used by the locals for centuries for rice agriculture. The region is renowned for its breathtaking sunsets, which can be enjoyed from the comfort of traditional boats known as ‘albuferencs’. These boats have become a popular attraction for both international visitors and tourists alike.

The objective was to invision an art museum that would serve as a cultural landmark for the nearby town of El Palmar, while also demonstrating a deep respect for the surrounding natural environment.

MUSEU D’ART MODERN DE L’ALBUFERA M A M L A

Arrival on Albuferencs.

The building lets the ecosystem live under itself. Just like a boat floating, the 4 volumes hover on top the water, with a structure that goes all the way down into good foundation under the lagoon.

Ground Floor

The structure is inspired by the wooden sticks that birds rest on, and then make reflections in the water that are definitely one of the most iconic and peacefull simbols of the lake.

1st Floor

Although gifted with an amazing location, the museum has to deal with the problem of humidity because it sits directly on top of the lagoon. This extreme humidity could be bad for the building and the art inside.

The project solves this by elevating itself a full story from the water level. This way we gain distance beetwen the exhibition and the water. But we also gain enough altitude to enjoy the views.

An ecosistem under the museum

The building serves as a connection between land and lagoon. Visitors can access the museum by foot or boat via the multipurpose building, which features a dock.

This arrangement enables visitors to fully experience the breathtaking sunsets, either from the lookout spot within the museum or by embarking on an albuferencs boat ride along the water.

Production: laser cut

This is a personal project that generated from my passion for design. A desk lamp that could be cut in wood with a laser.

The lamp on my desk

The idea was to create the shape of a sphere using just planes of wood. The shape is the result of trying to make it look as it was suspended in the air, so one could see the sphere more clearly.

The 3D model was done with AutoCAD, also a model of the reallife light bulb and socket to create proper openings for the switch cord, and the cable.

PROCESS

I think my architectural background can be seen in the final result. A very “building-like” shape to hold a bulb that turns on and off.

Suprematism was another influence. The power of plain and simple geometrical shapes, but this time in 3D.

Lastly, maybe the idea popped in my head because of a very famous art piece in Caracas (my hometown) “La Esfera de Soto” by Jesus Soto.
