19 FEBRUARY 2021

WELCOME TO 2021!

PRINCIPAL/TUMUAKI COMMENTS Kia ora koutou Ngā mihi o te tau hau. Welcome to a new year. I feel honoured to start this year as the new principal of Darfield High School and say a big “thanks” to your Board of Trustees for choosing me. I was drawn to this role as I enjoy rural schools with a strong sense of community, because it’s clear there’s some work to be done (which I enjoy) to restore the school’s place in the community, and because it’s pretty close to my home of Greymouth. I've been really impressed with all the students I’ve met so far, with positive energy, great manners and open, thoughtful nature. Most seem to be excited and happy to be back at school. There is a lot of good work happening with staff, for example the introduction of whānau time to build student culture around values and capabilities, and the evidence I’ve seen from last year’s NCEA grades shows we have staff who know their subject and care about their students. Last year’s NCEA grades are provisional, as it’s still possible to appeal or do further assessments on 2020 NCEA, up until 28 February 2021. But the basic pattern is extremely good, especially considering the crazy year that 2020 was: our grades have actually gone up at Levels 2 and 3 and UE and

are all around or above national averages, with Level 2 being well above. Level 1 dropped a bit, like the rest of the country—these students were hardest hit by Covid lockdown as they’d only just started NCEA, so we really did well there, too. Male students did very well last year, especially at Level 2. Endorsements were up and down, with no real trend, but that’s also in line with the national picture as students (and staff) generally focused on ‘getting through’ NCEA rather than on Excellence. Overall, I’m very impressed and assured that we have highly capable students, well supported at home, and staff. I’m not going to pretend everything is perfect (no school is) and I’m going to take some time, working with Gillian Simpson, to better understand the situation before I say more. Part of that will be for me to listen to all parts of our community as we look again at our intended vision and values—work I hope to conclude by the end of Term 2.

I was born in Sheffield, UK, and brought up just south of there, then moved to be close to my grandparents (and rivers and mountains) in Aberdeen, Scotland, before moving to Greymouth, NZ, in 2001. I taught Geography and Tourism at Greymouth High School before becoming Deputy Principal and then Principal there in 2013. I have two sons, 14 and 10, who stay in Greymouth and I live here with my partner and three young children. I enjoy the outdoors: whitewater kayaking and mountain biking, a bit of hunting and generally just being in beautiful landscapes. I enjoy working with teenagers and feel privileged to do a job in which I can contribute to the lives of a community. The success, in terms agreed by their family, of every child at DHS is really important to me. Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou Andy England Principal

19 FEBRUARY 2021

Having completed my training at the end of 2019, I have spent the past year working as a day relief teacher at Linwood College. Before retraining as a teacher, I spent five years as a Senior Driver Testing Officer in Christchurch, where I live with my wife and our English Springer Spaniel puppy, Sammie, who keeps us pretty busy outside of school. I am looking forward to working at DHS and getting to know you all as we explore the exciting world of Commerce.

Hi. I'm Andrew Lee, the new Head of Commerce in 2021. I have been teaching Commerce for the last five years at Shirley Boys' High School and look forward to my new role at Darfield High School.

My wife and I bought our first house in Rolleston a little over a year ago and it's nice to be teaching "just down the road". I'm originally from Invercargill, attended Southland Boys' High School and then went to study a Bachelor of Commerce at the University of Otago and a Graduate Diploma in Teaching & Learning at the University of Canterbury. In my spare time, I play basketball and water polo in Christchurch and have hobbies such as watching sport and barbecuing.

Kia ora. I’m Cat Lourie. This is my second year of teaching, and you’ll find me in the English Department at Darfield High School.

Kia ora! My name is Emily Dawson and I am very excited to be joining the Social Sciences department as a Social Studies and Geography teacher. This is my first year of teaching and I feel very lucky to have been welcomed so warmly by both ākonga and staff. I am looking forward to absorbing as much knowledge and information as I can throughout 2021 and I cannot wait to get to know you all better. ISSUE 1 / DHS DISPATCH

Welcome New Staff

Kia ora koutou katoa. I am Josh Jackson and am very excited to be joining the Darfield High School Commerce Department, where I will be teaching Senior Business Studies, Year 11 Economics, and the Year 7 Enterprise Studies programme.

I spent last year teaching down in remote, beautiful Te Anau, so I am enjoying having a shorter commute to family and friends here in Canterbury, while still being near the mountains. DHS has been really welcoming and I am looking forward to my time here.

Welcome back, Kimberley Kensington, Year 7 Homeroom teacher, and Kerry Sullivan-Croote, who is teaching Science

Welcome to the wonderful Wizarding World of Year 8

STUDENT SUCCESSES From 21 to 24 January, Chloe Newbigging participated in the Swimming Canterbury and West Coast Long Course Champs in Dunedin. Also competing were Kimberly Harris, also in Selwyn Swim Club, and Zahara Sutton (Waitaha Swim Club). The girls spent a fair bit of their holidays attending swim camps and training, often twice a day. It was the first time they had competed in a 50 m pool since this time last year and consisted of heats in the morning and finals in the afternoon. The three girls swam well, reaching the finals in many of their races, with Chloe making some super finals (fastest eight out of all ages). Chloe finished with the following results in her 15-16 women's age group: Gold for 100 m (3rd overall in opens) and 200 m Backstroke and 400m Individual Medley (3rd overall in open age group), Silver in 50 m Backstroke, 200 m Individual Medley and Girls Freestyle Relay team, and Bronze for Girls Medley relay team. Kimberly also attended the Canterbury Development Champs this weekend and won silver for her 50 m Fly.

When a student begins at Darfield High School, they become a member of one of the four Houses. Each House is run by a Staff Leader and a House Leader, a Year 12 or 13 student who liaises with the students. The House system encourages a positive atmosphere at Darfield High School and to enhance participation in events and relationships among students. Students participate in various events, covering sporting, cultural and academic activities, to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to contribute. Placing in specific events and participation in events are both rewarded, provided that students are honouring the spirit of the event.

INTRODUCING OUR 2021 HOUSE LEADERS Nau mai, Hoki mai Welcome to 2021. For some, this will be a warm welcome to a new beginning at our school. Let me introduce or remind you of the services we are able to provide for our Tamariki and Whanau through DHS Counsellors. Our aim is to support the wellbeing and safety of all students at Darfield High to enable our young people to achieve their full potential. We are professionally trained counsellors, registered members of the New Zealand Association of Counsellors, and we work according to the NZAC Code of Ethics. We maintain confidentiality unless there is a serious and imminent risk to safety.

Some of what counsellors/ Kaitohutohu do: • Provide a safe, confidential environment for students and family. • Listen to concerns. • Assist students to make the changes they want. • Teach skills for living (eg anger management, problem solving, decision making, motivation, effective communication). • Assist with alcohol/drug concerns, stress, planning and setting goals, family break-up, relationship difficulties, grief and loss, coping with change, fear and anxiety, or any other concern. • Act as advocate for the student at suspension hearings. • Refer to outside agencies for extended support if necessary.

You will find us in the Student Services Block (D Block). Students can self-refer by filling out a request or emailing, or just popping in to ask for an appointment. Parents are welcome to contact us and staff often refer students to us. Issues may be large or small! Don't wait for a crisis. If unsure, come and chat. We are here to help.

PEER SUPPORT Over the last couple of weeks, our Peer Support leaders have been working with us in the Year 7 classes. The first time Peer Support came, we played name games and did activities to help us to get to know our classmates; they even came to our first option class with us. The second time, we played games that helped us with communication and cooperation. We had games like lining up from youngest to oldest, getting sticky notes with things like animals, sport, food, vehicles, colours and objects and then finding our groups, and we played a chair game called fruit salad. Our Peer Support Leaders also went to House Assemblies with us and made sure we knew where to go. It has been fun doing the Peer Support games and working with our leaders. DHS have set up a Facebook page, for parents, guardians or friends of Darfield High School. Sport plays an important part in the lives of our children so it is essential that they have the opportunities to participate in regular physical activities. To do this we need to ensure that we have the funding available to deliver these opportunities and make it available to all students. We welcome anyone interested in supporting our fundraising initiatives and any ideas that you may have. 19 FEBRUARY 2021

Triathlon Lake Crichton

On Friday 12 February, 17 DHS students competed in the Lake Crichton Triathlon/Duathlon. This replaced our usual triathlon around the streets of Darfield. Those students competing in the Triathlon swam, ran and biked their way around the Short Course at Lake Crichton. Lake Crichton is an extremely safe, naturally heated, man-made lake in a tranquil setting: the perfect place for our athletes to complete the 150 m swim, 1.5 km run, 8 km bike, finishing with a 2.25 km run. Well done to all those who competed and thank you to the parents involved. For full results click on the webscorer link below.

BUS

SCHOOL BUS

Routines and Behaviour Student behaviour is of utmost importance. Bus Monitors monitor the school’s expectations and have direct contact with Ms Tangney, the Bus Controller. They are trusted and valued students who have the full support of the staff. The following guidelines are to be observed by all students: • No behaviour that distracts the driver is permitted • All body parts are to remain inside the vehicle at all times • Nothing is to be thrown from the openings of the vehicle • Students are to remain seated throughout the journey • ANY form of BULLYING is unacceptable • No food or drink is to be consumed while on the bus • Yelling or abusive language is unacceptable • Politely follow instructions or any request given by the driver or bus monitor. Early Departure of Buses The Principal will decide whether circumstances call for sending some or all students home early. The Principal will notify the school community of these decisions and other actions will be taken by students and the Bus Controller. Accidents Firstly, if an accident occurs, remain seated and calm. There are a number of steps students are to take when such situations arise. Follow the instructions of either the bus driver or the bus monitors. Be Safe on your Journey When waiting for your bus: • Stand back from the road • Concentrate on the road, the traffic and anything else happening around you • Wait until the bus has stopped before boarding in single file • Let the younger children go first • Do not cross the road until the bus is at least two power poles away For Parents • Any student wishing to travel on a bus they are not enrolled on must bring a note from a caregiver or parent requesting this; the note should be given to the school office before 11.15 am on the day concerned or emailed directly to the Bus Controller directly • Once the bus arrives at school, students must enter the school grounds • Reduce your speed to 20 km/h when passing a stationary school bus For more information about buses, visit: http://darfield.school.nz/enrolment/buses Bus Controller Ms A Tangney at@darfield.school.nz

HAVE A GO DAY!

Students were invited to come along to the Quad at lunchtime last Wednesday, to try out some of the fun things to do at Darfield High’s first “Have A Go Day!” this year. They could take part in what our Music, Drama, Languages, Art and Rural College areas have to offer.

Farewell

After six years at Darfield, it is time for a change, and I’m excited to be moving on to a new adventure: walking the North Island leg of Te Araroa. I want to say thank you to all of the DHS staff who have supported the international students and programme during my time. I’m really proud of all of our international students and their achievements, and the culture we have created within our cohort. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed our experiences together on school holiday trips, the ski programme, outdoor education outings, and volunteer tree planting. I’ve also been really grateful for the community support and, especially, our wonderful host families. Finally, I couldn’t have done my job without the amazing International Department staff. Thank you so much, Shona, Sumi and Zuzana for all your help and support. Nicola Hely 24

It’s a chance to refresh, spend time with their friends and family, go to the dentist and enjoy their own cuisine. These past holidays they were unable to do so if they wanted to continue their New Zealand education. I was proud of the way the students were able to stay positive and make new plans for their holidays. They all joined at least one Smylies Tours trip and travelled to new places like the North Island. As well as these trips, we had regular activities around our local area, such as visiting New Brighton Beach, shopping, going to the Darfield Pool, and playing sports at school. We even tried our hand at making some yummy bubble tea, thanks to a kit from Boba Lab. I’d like to thank the students for their positive attitudes, and all their host families for taking such great care of them during the summer holidays. Nicola Hely ISSUE 1 / DHS DISPATCH

Your Children Need Your Support So does the

Malvern Youth Trust! The Malvern Youth Charitable Trust has been responding to the needs of Malvern youth since May 2000. It is constantly looking for ways to support the physical, emotional, educational and social needs of young people in our district. In 2019, a successful Wellness Day was organised by the Trust for Year 9 students at DHS. Dame Sue Bagshaw was the keynote speaker. For many years, two leadership trophies sponsored by the MYT have enabled DHS Students to join Spirit of New Zealand leadership cruises. If you have: • A desire to work with the youth of Malvern to accomplish the above goals • An initiative involving young people that we can help you to implement • A vision for achieving stronger community support for our young people Please ring the Malvern Youth Trust Acting Chair: Alan Blackburn 03 318 8076 or 0274 532 216 27
