ACTING PRINCIPAL’S COMMENTS This is the last Dispatch for the year… and what a year it has been! I was a Principal through the Canterbury earthquakes; they brought out the best in our Canterbury schools. The challenge of Covid has also put our resilience and adaptability to the test, in a very different way, but we have got through it, too. I want to acknowledge the wonderful job that staff have done, with the responsiveness of the students and support of parents and caregivers, to allow learning to continue through these disrupted times. It is a credit to you all that we have arrived at year’s end having maintained learning as best we can in the circumstances. Let us hope we get an uninterrupted run at 2021.

are so many inputs and experiences provided that add to the knowledge, understanding and personality of our students. It is a mix of teachers, parents, caregivers, community and the students themselves. This school provides such a range of experiences that the willingness of students to take advantage of them is the biggest factor in their success. To all the students who have tasted success, whatever that may mean for you: well done. For those who have not, make sure you set yourself some goals for 2021. Success is not always measured by winning prizes or awards; it is, in its simplest form, that you are better than before. Many small steps can create a big climb.

Covid aside, I want to thank all those who have contributed to providing a school environment that has allowed so many of our students to achieve, excel and grow. Growing good young people is very complex and multi-faceted. There

To the students leaving Darfield High School: thank you for your contribution over the years. We trust you are moving to your next step in life well prepared to participate fully in your future education or work.

A big thank you to the staff. It has been a busy and different year but you have adapted to allow the students to still get the education that they need. It has shown that learning can continue despite severe disruption. To those staff leaving, we thank you for what you have done here and wish you all the best in the future. It has been a privilege to lead the school over the last three months. It has been busy but rewarding. I have enjoyed working with a focused and passionate staff, a great group of students and committed parents, caregivers and community. To you all: a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year. I trust you all get quality family time and have a good holiday. Trevor McIntyre

Presents donated by DHS to the Presbyterian Support. They will be distributed by social workers in schools, Mana ake and community teams.

Kia ora koutou This year, we have reviewed the current form time structure, in consultation with students and staff, who identified the need for change. So in 2021, we will introduce ‘Whānau Time’ and ‘Check and Connect’, which will result in some changes to the structure of our school day. Check and Connect will be three times a week to carry out administrative tasks. Whānau Time will be during Period 2 on Fridays. The purpose of Whānau Time is to build stronger connections between ākonga (students) and kaiako (teachers) and help shape our ākonga into resilient, respectful, confident, and contributing learners. This space will give us more opportunities to learn about the following themes: Term 1: Getting to know ourselves and each other Term 2: Where am I going? (career exploration) Term 3: Looking after myself (wellbeing) Term 4: Giving back (Service in our community) To ensure consistency in practice, we will be providing professional development for our staff on Thursdays from 8.15 am. This will mean a later start on that morning (9.00 am). Buses will still run at the usual times and the Leadership Team will be on duty during this time. The other small change in the structure of the day is a 3.10 pm finish each day. Buses will accommodate this change. We are excited about the new opportunities that Whānau Time will bring. Below is an outline of the structure of the week for 2021:

I have enjoyed teaching here and have some really lovely memories. I have enjoyed the opportunity of teaching Year 7 students. Enterprise has been fun and it was always lovely to have a new class arrive every eight weeks. I have been so impressed with the passion students showed in my Accounting classes, which is a subject I have reintroduced, and I am sorry to be leaving you all. Business Studies and Economics have been a pleasure to teach as well, and thank you to the businesses and mentors who helped over the years.

It has been a pleasure working at Darfield High School over the past six years. I have enjoyed my time teaching and deaning and will miss the students very much. Thank you to all the staff and community who have made my time here so enjoyable, but it is time for me to move on to my next adventure at Rolleston College. Laura Petersen

Next year, I will think of you all (and miss you) as I start a position at Burnside High School. Thank you to the students and staff who have shared my journey these last few years. Have a safe and happy holiday. Caroline Harrington

Farewell from Hannah and Ethan

Kia Ora. I have had the pleasure of teaching at DHS for three years. I am grateful for the opportunities I have had and have thoroughly enjoyed building relationships with everyone. I am heading to Rosehill College in South Auckland and am looking forward to the opportunities to come. Thank you all for your support. Chrystal McIntyre

Change is in the air for both of our youth workers. At the end of this year, both Hannah and Ethan are finishing their roles as youth workers at DHS. For both of them, it has been a blast being part of the team at DHS, School of Dreams! Both will be staying in the area, so will still see you around town. Hannah and Ethan signing out now and wishing you all a happy holiday season. 24/7 Youth Workers

FAREWELL & GOOD LUCK!

It has been a pleasure to have taught at DHS these last three years.

Year 8 Mini Market On Friday 4 December, the amazing Year 8 students at DHS raised money for Kids Can. They decided to have a mini-fair where all students could sell their produce, crafts, and sweets to our school community. In Year 8, we know the value of giving back, and we are absolutely thrilled to announce that we raised over $500 for this worthy charity. We would like to thank all of our gorgeous parents and staff who supported us with this event. The energy out on the field today was tremendous. As a staff, we are incredibly proud of our kids!

CHRISTMAS is nearly here!

The students in Alternative Education have had a sensational end to the year. Here are some of the results. We individually decorated door handle signs which said, "Santa Please Stop Here!" We added personal touches and gave them to the Learning Centre Students at their Christmas party. Nikita and Riane made Gingerbread Cottages and Nikita made another one and gave it to the Learning Centre as part of their Christmas celebrations. The attention to detail and individual effort that went into them are outstanding. Riane made a Christmas wreath from coloured card, using his handprint cut out. The result is fantastic and looks very realistic. I am so proud of these students and it is wonderful to see them putting so much effort and thought into their projects. They have learned that the effort that goes into work is reflected in the end result. They have also learned how great it feels to be proud of their work and to celebrate their own success. SADD

Successful Expo On Wednesday 4 November, the Darfield High SADD team held an Expo at school. The expo was to create a fun and interactive way to educate the students about SADD and road safety. We also ran a Driver's Licence competition where the students had to find out the answer to a question from each stall to go into the draw to win one of the many prizes. The stalls consisted of our local emergency services, such as Fire and Emergency, St John and Police, as well as Proactive Drive and representatives from SADD and the Selwyn District Council. The event was a huge success with great participation. It was awesome to have great weather and turn out after many setbacks due to Covid-19.

HIGHLIGHTS Brooke Ebdon-Collings: 2nd in Year 8 Long Jump with a PB of 4.54 m; second in the Discus with a throw of 23.55 m (50 cm more than her school qualifying distance).

DHS have set up a Facebook page, for parents, guardians or friends of Darfield High School. Sport plays an important part in the lives of our children so it is essential that they have the opportunities to participate in regular physical activities. To do this we need to ensure that we have the funding available to deliver these opportunities and make it available to all students. We welcome anyone interested in supporting our fundraising initiatives and any ideas that you may have.

Maddy Judd: 4th in Year 7 Discus with a PB of 19.82 m (1.22 m further than her school qualifying distance). Year 8 Boys Relay: qualified 5th in the heats with a time of 55.39 and finished fifth in the Finals with a time of 54.60. The team were Lucas, Tyler, Charles and Hamish. Aria Barnes shaved some time off her school qualifying time for the 100 m, as did Sara Hefferon in her 100 m race, with Sara just missing out on the finals by one spot, Tyler Hutchison improved his school jump by 19 cm in Long Jump. Shayden McDonnell leapt 4.47 m for a PB (this would have been a school record). Toby Thwaites improved his 1200 m school qualifying time by 8 seconds. Hamish Henderson's 1200 m was extremely impressive; not only did he break the school record at 4.15.90 m, but also his time on the day was 4.02.97.

On Thursday 3 December, we welcomed Year 7 2021 to DHS for their Transition Day. It is always exciting to meet the students who will join us the following year and to spend valuable time getting to know them. While the day had lots of highlights, I have to mention the HUGE bouncy castle that our wonderful Youth Workers provided for us. OK, so a bouncy castle isn't exactly part of a normal day at DHS, but it is the ideal icebreaker for everyone to get out there and have fun together. I would like to thank the primary schools and the families of the students who attended for their support of the day. I would also like to thank the DHS team who worked so hard to make the day a success. Finally, to Year 7 2021: welcome to Darfield High School! We are looking forward to spending next year with you all! Amanda Macpherson—Year 7 Dean
