In December of 2008, the Dartmouth women’s lacrosse team took the journey of a lifetime during a two-week tour of Australia. The Big Green travels Down Under every four years, also going in 2000 and 2004. Taking time to enjoy Australian culture while also competing, the trip gave the players and coaches the unique opportunity to travel abroad together and to hit the field prior to the 2009 season.

To start the tour, Dartmouth spent time in Sydney seeing sites such as the Harbor, Opera House and Olympic Park while also participating in team practices. The Big Green then enjoyed a thrilling three-day excursion to Cairns, home of the Great Barrier Reef.

During that time players went scuba diving in the Coral Sea, skydiving and white-water rafting.

For the final five days, the Big Green traveled to Adelaide to take on the Australian National Team and Developmental Team, playing seven games in four days. While the Aussie Elites, preparing for the 2009 World Cup, got the better of the Big Green, Dartmouth defeated Australia’s second side in all four meetings.

Now in its 38th season, the Dartmouth College women’s lacrosse program has firmly established itself as one of the most powerful teams in the nation. Playing a schedule that consistently features many of the country’s top teams, the Big Green has reached double figures in wins 17 times since 1986, amassing a 250-129 overall record and a 108-40 Ivy League mark during that period. Head coach Amy Patton and her players are known for their hard-nosed play and willingness to take on all comers.

Each year the goal is the same for the Big Green: win the Ivy League Championship and compete for the national title. In recent years, both goals have been met with regularity. Dartmouth climbed to new heights in 2006, advancing to the NCAA Tournament championship game. The Big Green played in the NCAA semifinals in 2005, 1998 and 1995 with a total of 11 tournament appearances and six since 2000.

Within the Ivy League, one of the elite lacrosse conferences in the nation, Dartmouth has won eight titles in the last 14 seasons and 11 overall.

Entering her 18th season, Coach Patton has brought consistency and tremendous success to the Dartmouth sideline. In addition to Patton, associate head coach Sarah Martin and volunteer assistant Christine Anneberg are in their 11th and sixth seasons, respectively.

Amy Patton enters her 18th season as Dartmouth’s head coach and will take the field this spring with one of her most experienced teams ever. The Big Green returns 11 starters from last season as it looks to get back to the top of the Ivy League and the NCAA Tournament.

The 2009 team finished out at 8-8, 5-2 Ivy with several close losses. What things would you hope to take from that and build on as the 2010 season begins?

The things that stand out to me were that we were an incredibly young team, relying on inexperienced players to keep us in games against a lot of opponents that were better than us. Threequarters of the season we did that well, but the last quarter of the season struggled and our youth really showed. What we can take from that is sometimes you simply have to persevere and stay focused on developing and getting better every single day. We use that lesson throughout

life, and I see the players recognizing that they can reflect on the good things and the things we know we can better to understand the experience and move on.

For the past few years, you have had a lot of freshmen and sophomores seeing significant playing time and getting a lot of experience.

Do you expect that to come into play this year?

Ideally Dartmouth lacrosse has had two freshmen on the field, maybe three or four in a strong class. Traditionally, we would have eight juniors and seniors on the field, with some sophomores and freshmen, whereas last year it was almost completely flipped. We’re heading back toward having the majority of the players be upperclassmen and letting that freshman class develop without feeling so pressured. It’s asking a lot of freshmen and sophomores to win one-goal games — juniors and seniors are ready for that.

We have three classes of kids where most of them have played a lot since their freshmen year.

We can look at our team and see the experience.

Our numbers are higher, we’ve got more players on the roster so hopefully we will better endure a few bumps and bruises here and there. We play 15 games, but you get better in practice and I’ve already seen that helping us.

After the fall season and winter training, do you see this team developing an identity or character?

I’ve been really impressed with this team’s motivation. They have a nice balance of digging in and working hard, but also laughing, making me laugh and having a lot of fun. That balance is hard to strike and you see that with a more mature team. We as coaches believe in them, but the X-factor is going to be them believing in and trusting each other. They’ve been working at that since the summer and only they will know if it’s there.

I can’t sit here and say who’s going to start. I expect us to be playing at least 15 players a game, maybe even around 18 on a consistent basis.

Practices have been really competitive in the fall and we have some individuals with competitive personalities that have raised our level of play.

You have a solid group of five seniors that have been through a lot. Talk about their leadership and resolve.

I’ve been really impressed with our senior class. They have their mind set on goals and have been leading toward them. They are precise in what they want and are really moving the team toward that. Their five personalities are very different but they have been so good about listening to each other and hashing things out. They don’t always see eye-to-eye, but I have seen so much maturity watching them listen to each other and find a middle ground. With peers, that’s not always easy to do.

Our three captains will be field leaders out

there. Julie Wadland is one of the best keepers in the country, and knowing you have someone like that in the cage lets the defense play a little more risky. Colleen Olsen has improved immensely, especially her confidence with playing with the US Team [along with Wadland]. She’s just so reliable out there. Eliza Bennet has had injuries throughout her career but to finally have her back leading the attack, she’s like another coach on the field.

With all eight of them being from New England, the freshman class has received a lot of deserved attention. Where do you see them fitting in?

I see our freshmen raising the level of our practices. Top to bottom, we’re stronger than we have been. Even our players who aren’t quite there yet have great strengths. A theme of ours this year has been working on identifying individual strengths so that we can utilize them.

That has helped our players get to know each other and also feel important – knowing what they are good at helps define roles. When I think of the freshmen there are some real competitors – Courtney Bennett, Kelsey Johnson and Kyra Hansson — they are just fierce competitors.

Even for our players who aren’t quite up to speed on skills, they can always bring that competitiveness, which pushes the upperclassmen. All eight of them are coming along at their own pace and the ability to do that will pay off for them next year. It’s too early to be seen how much they can contribute on the field this spring.

You only graduated two seniors last year and one starter, Katherine Chiusano, who ranked second on the team with 48 points. Besides that, you bring back a strong offensive corps.

Watching our offense this fall, even without the big guns in the junior class, our scoring and assisting was really even. Some players who in the past have looked to Kat Collins or Greta Meyer to get it done, got it done themselves.

It’s nice for Kat and Greta to have a lot of help and the pressure will be off them. In some ways, they can just play and not feel like they have to have a perfect game for us to win, which I think they have felt a bit in the past. We have a lot of firepower on that attack in Sarah Parks, Sarah Plumb, Erin Massimi and Kirsten Goldberg.

One of our strengths is going to be through the midfield. We have some very athletic middies and a lot of them. We’re hoping we can use them effectively.

Julie Wadland anchors a veteran defense in goal. Talk about your team on that end of the field.

Our defense should be our strength, that’s where we are the most experienced.

Dartmouth’s trademark has traditionally been defense, but since the 2006 Final Four year we’ve really given up a lot of goals which is uncharacteristic. A lot of that was being young and when you’re talking defense, you can’t hide anybody. This fall it was nice to see them trusting and being on the same page. We will try to be more dynamic this year with veterans like Olsen, Shannie MacKenzie, Dana Brisbane, Hilary Smith and Georgia Bird.

I feel much more settled, which for me means confident and knowing that we can do more than just staying in the confines of the game.

The team has been ranked 12th in the national preseason rankings but that will certainly be tested this season. You’ve put together yet another challenging schedule for your squad.

I don’t get caught up in the rankings, but I do think the preseason ranking shows that people respect us. We didn’t have a strong finish to last season so to be ranked shows the respect and that coaches out there know we have been playing a lot of young kids. The last game of the season we started seven freshmen and thinking back, that’s crazy. For us to have that preseason ranking says people know we have quality athletes and the tradition of the program – giving us credit that we’ll be back on the map.

We look forward to Ivy League games because they create an equal playing ground.

We’ve all had the same number of practices and there’s a bit of a swagger about the studentathletes. Our non-conference games are very important, but there’s more emphasis placed on the Ivy games.

We are going to have to deal with the fact that we are on the road a lot this season, with eight road games. We need to develop a routine for those away games to make them feel like

home games. I’ve posed that challenge to our senior class because road games can be challenging.

This year also marks the inaugural Ivy League Tournament. The regular season champion is still the Ivy Champ but the tournament winner will receive the NCAA automatic bid. What’s the feeling on this huge break from tradition?

I’m really excited about this. It gives our league a great chance to not only maintain two teams in the NCAA Tournament, but also a very viable chance to get three in. I think this year there will be three strong teams that could be NCAA teams. It will also help prepare our teams for the NCAA Tournament. The athletes are really excited about it.

As a veteran coach, what does it mean for you to see so much growth in the game not only at the developmental stages, but also at the Division I level?

There is so much competitiveness which really stems from the recruiting. The sport is growing so rapidly that I do feel like there’s enough student-athletes to go around but you have to make sure you’re finding them. It’s awesome for the growth of the sport to have so many schools out there. Women’s lacrosse is unique because some parts of the game have remained as they were 20 years ago while other parts have just exploded. Some parts of the game are so much the same while others are on the cutting edge and how do you balance that?

Yet the constant is that it’s a great spectator sport. There’s a lot of scoring, athleticism and it’s fast-moving. I think you can be stunned at the athleticism of these women who are big and strong and athletic and I’m biased, but it’s a beautiful game to watch.

You’ve built a nationally-recognized and respected program at Dartmouth. What do you hope people think of when they hear “Dartmouth women’s lacrosse”?

I always hope that the first thing that comes to mind is our pride and tradition. I’m really proud of the student-athletes that graduate from here and how they go on to represent our program. We’re teaching these young women how to prepare for life after Dartmouth ­— discipline, teamwork — things people like to throw around without a lot of weight behind them. But we take that so seriously.

I want people to think of how we take the field as a united group and that we’ll play until the last second. Win or lose, that’s going to take care of itself because of what we’re doing every day. It’s so much about letting the small things happen to take care of the bigger picture, and that’s going to get you places.

18th season • MARyland ’88 • 8 ivy championships •10 ncaa tournaments Entering her 18th season on the Dartmouth sideline in 2010, head coach Amy Patton has led the Big Green to unprecedented success. With 187 career wins, 10 NCAA Tournament appearances, eight Ivy League championships and three NCAA final fours to her credit, Patton is one of the nation’s elite coaches. Beyond Hanover, Patton is an active part of U.S. Lacrosse, currently serving as head coach of the U.S. Women’s National Developmental team.

In 17 years as head coach, Patton owns a 187-88 overall record, 89-25 in Ivy League play, winning 78 percent of Dartmouth’s conference games.

Since her arrival in Hanover in 1993, the Big Green has reached double figures in wins 13 times and advanced past the NCAA first round seven times. Patton’s teams are no strangers to perfection, five times winning the Ivy League unbeaten, most recently in 2005. From 1997-2001, Dartmouth won 22 consecutive Ancient Eight contests, en route to three-straight 7-0 championship seasons.

While the numbers speak volumes for Patton, she is also well known for her abilities as a strategist, teacher, leader and competitor. She is comfortable switching styles to suit the personnel in any given season, and has even done so midyear. In 2006, after starting the season at 6-4, Dartmouth stirred up the lacrosse world by going on an 8-1 run, storming to the NCAA national championship game. After an epic battle in front of a strong proDartmouth crowd at Boston University’s Nickerson Field, the defending national champion Northwestern got past the Big Green, 7-4.

Perhaps most important, Dartmouth’s players develop both as athletes and people during their time in Hanover. Since 1993, Patton has coached 28 first team All-Ivy players honored 48 times. Also in that time, Dartmouth boasts 26 All-Americans honored 43 times, including 21 first team honorees. Patton has mentored four Ivy League Players of the Year, three Ivy Rookies of the Year, a national player of the year and a national defensive player of the year.

Known for her work with goalkeepers, Patton’s recent netminders have had tremendous success on both the national and international scene.

Devon Wills ’06, a three-time All-America and current member of the U.S. National Elite team, is regarded as one of the top goalkeepers in the world.

First team All-Ivy goalie Sarah Hughes ’02 was part of the U.S. National program and current goalie, junior Julie Wadland ’10, has been part of the U.S. Developmental Squad since 2008.

Two Patton-coached players saw success on the world stage this past summer when Wills and Whitney Douthett ’07 helped the United States to the 2009 Lacrosse World Cup Championship in Prague. Wills was named MVP of the championship game.

Patton’s efforts have not gone unrewarded on a personal level. She was named the IWLCA National Coach of the Year in 1998, was one of three finalists for that honor in 1993 — her first season at the helm — and has been the Northeast Region’s Coach of the Year three times (1994, 1995, 1998).

One of the most recognized names in college women’s lacrosse, Patton is a prominent member of the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA). She was vice president of the IWLCA for two years.

Most recently, Patton headed the Brine All-America selection committee and has served on the Tewaaraton Trophy selection committee. Patton was a U.S. Squad selector in 1993, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2006, 2007 and 2008. She was also a member of the NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Committee and assistant coach for the U.S. National Developmental team in 1998-2000. Patton has served as head coach of the developmental squad since July, 2006.

Prior to her appointment as head coach at Dartmouth, Patton served as an assistant to former coach and current athletics director Josie Harper from 1991-92. Patton served as an assistant for the University of Maryland women’s lacrosse team during the 1990 season.

Patton is a 1988 graduate of the University of Maryland where she earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education. As an athlete, Patton was a four-year letterwinner in both lacrosse and field hockey, earning All-America and All-ACC accolades. She was a member of Maryland’s 1986 NCAA national championship lacrosse team and earned the Terps’ scholar-athlete award.

ASSOCIATE head coach SARAH MARTIN RECRUITING COORDINATOR • 11th season • MIDDLEBURY ’95

Entering her 11th season on the Dartmouth sideline, Sarah Martin has been an integral part of the Big Green’s success since joining the staff in 1999.

She was promoted to Dartmouth’s associate head coach in November 2002.

Since coming to Hanover, Martin has helped Dartmouth win five Ivy League championships and make seven NCAA Tournament appearances. During her time, she has helped develop 21 first team All-Ivy athletes recognized 32 times. Dartmouth has had 10 first team All-America honorees in that time as well.

Her primary assignments are working with the Dartmouth defense and recruiting, including targeting prospects and player assessment.

Martin has played a critical role in putting together some of the finest recruiting classes in the nation during the past several seasons. She has helped the program nationalize its recruiting base, with players from as far west as Colorado and south to hotbeds in Virginia and Maryland.

However, Martin and Patton have recognized the talent that lies in their own backyard, tapping into New England’s finest high school and club programs for a core group of players. The Class of 2013 hails entirely from New England, with four of its members among the New England Lacrosse Journal’s top 10 in the region.

Amongst the freshman through junior classes, Dartmouth has 14 US Lacrosse High School All-Americans in its ranks, including 11 firstteam honorees.

Under Martin’s watchful eye, the Big Green is perennially one of the nation’s and Ivy League’s best defensive teams. Senior Colleen Olsen has blossomed into one of the top defenders in the nation under Martin’s tutelage and was recently named to the US National Developmental Team.

During Dartmouth’s spectacular run in 2006, the Big Green topped the nation in scoring defense, allowing only 6.80 goals per game, after being second in 2005. That year, the Big Green also led the country in ground balls and caused turnovers.

Prior to her arrival at Dartmouth, Martin spent eight years at Middlebury — four of them as a player and four as an assistant coach.

From 1995-99, Martin worked as an assistant coach with the Panther women’s lacrosse, field hockey and women’s basketball programs. During that time, Middlebury won two NCAA Division III national lacrosse championships (1997, 1999) and advanced to the semifinal round two other times (1996, 1998). In field hockey, the Panthers won the 1998 NCAA Division III national title after capturing the ECAC Division III championship in 1997. Finally, the basketball team won the ECAC Division III championship in 1997, sandwiching that title between a pair of NCAA Division III tournament appearances.

Martin played all three sports at Middlebury from 1992-95, captaining every one of them and earning the school’s Bayard A. Russ Award as the outstanding female athlete. Martin was named to the NCAA Division III All-Tournament team for field hockey in 1994, when her team advanced to the final four. In lacrosse, she was an All-America and earned team MVP honors on Middlebury’s NCAA semifinalist team as a senior.

She takes such tremendous pride in watching her players learn and grow over the course of the four years they spend beneath her wing, because she really pours all of herself into helping us become better players and better people.

“Her coaching style is a perfect balance of patience and intensity; she is so calm, patient, and perceptive in giving you feedback, but she is also constantly challenging you to make the changes you need to in order to become the player she knows you are capable of becoming. She makes it clear that she believes so strongly in all of us, which is truly empowering, because she gives you the confidence to take risks and get outside of your comfort zone, which ultimately is what makes you grow.

Courtney Farrell, a former AllAmerica selection at Cornell, is entering her first season as an assistant coach for the Dartmouth women’s lacrosse team.

A 2008 graduate of Cornell, Farrell returns to the Ivy League after a year as an assistant coach at American University in Washington, D.C.

“We are excited to have Courtney joining our program,” said Patton at the time of her hiring. “She brings both an understanding of the Ivy League, having been a former student-athlete at Cornell, and a genuine passion for the sport and coaching. She was a dominant attacker in the Ivy League for four years and we are looking forward to her working with our players as she brings sheer enthusiasm for the sport.”

During her time at American, Farrell worked primarily with the attack unit and assisted with all aspects of the program including recruiting, team travel, scouting and camps. Three Eagles were named All-Patriot League during Farrell’s time on the sidelines. Prior to her appointment at American, Farrell honed her skills at her alma mater during an externship her senior spring. She assisted the coaching staff with scouting, recruiting evaluations and day-to-day operations.

No stranger to the Ivy League, Farrell had a standout four-year career at Cornell, leading the Big Red to an Ivy League Championship in 2006. She earned All-Ivy distinction in each of her four years, including first team All-Ivy honors as a sophomore, junior and senior. She was also named to the IWLCA All-Northeast first team in each of those

seasons and was a third team All-America selection in 2008 as a senior.

Farrell is one of the finest ever to have played for the Big Red, holding the school records for career points (213) and assists (91) and single-season assists (34), set in 2007. As a senior, she earned a spot on the 2008 Tewaaraton Trophy Watch List. She also has experience at the national level as part of the United States Developmental Team since 2006.

In addition to her collegiate tenure, Farrell has coached at a variety of camps and clinics including Cornell Premier Lacrosse Camp. She was a member of the SAAC at Cornell and served as her team’s community service organizer.

A native of Fayetteville, N.Y., Farrell earned a bachelor’s degree in applied economics and management with a minor in education from Cornell (2008).

SCREMIN

Nicole Scremin joined the Dartmouth athletic training staff in fall of 2008. She is currently in her second season with the Big Green women’s lacrosse team, overseeing medical care for all 27 studentathletes.

A 2003 graduate of Boise State, Scremin comes to Hanover following three years as a graduate assistant at Northeastern University where she also earned her master’s degree in athletic training.

During her time at Northeastern, she worked at multiple events around Boston, including representing Gatorade in educating youth athletes, parents and coaches on hydration while participating in sports. In addition to her work with lacrosse, Scremin oversees athletic training for Dartmouth’s club men’s and women’s rugby teams in the fall.

SWEENEY

Kaitlin Sweeney is in her second season as an assistant strength and conditioning coach. Sweeney is responsible for preparing the women’s lacrosse team for its season through strength, conditioning and nutrition programs. She comes to Dartmouth following two seasons at WisconsinLa Crosse as a graduate assistant.

From 2001-06, she was a strength and conditioning coach for student-athletes at High Performance Sports in Peabody, Mass. and at her alma mater of Ithaca College. She also interned with Cornell and Georgia Tech, along with being a conditioning specialist for professional athletes.

Sweeney recently earned her master’s in exercise and sports science, human performance and strength and conditioning at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Sweeney is a 2006 graduate of Ithaca College where she earned her bachelor’s in clinical exercise science with a minor in nutrition promotion. At Ithaca, Sweeney was an all-conference and all-region player for the Bombers women’s soccer team. In addition to lacrosse, Sweeney works with women’s hockey, football, women’s crew and men’s lacrosse.

Dr. Jim Yong Kim, an internationally recognized physician and humanitarian and an accomplished educator and anthropologist, became the 17th president of Dartmouth College on July 1, 2009.

Dr. Kim, 49, has had a profound impact on a wide range of organizations throughout his distinguished career, including, among others, the Harvard Medical School, the World Health Organization and Partners In Health, a non-profit organization that supports health programs in poor communities worldwide. He is widely respected for his leadership in the fight against HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and other diseases.

Dr. Kim’s academic, humanitarian and global health work has earned him widespread recognition. He was awarded a MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship in 2003; was named one of America’s 25 “Best Leaders” by US News & World Report in 2005; and was selected as one of TIME magazine’s “100 Most Influential People in the World” in 2006.

Dr. Kim has been committed to educating young people since his first teaching experience more than 20 years ago at Harvard University. Since that time, he has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in anthropology, social analysis, social medicine, and global health.

Dr. Kim is renowned for his leadership in the global fight against HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and other diseases that disproportionately affect the world’s poorest people. While at WHO, Dr. Kim led an unprecedented initiative to expand access to HIV/AIDS treatment worldwide. By 2007, the initiative had helped provide lifesaving antiretroviral therapy to more than three million people worldwide and accelerated global efforts to fight other diseases such as tuberculosis and malaria.

Born in Seoul, Korea in 1959, Jim Yong Kim moved with his family to the United States at the age of five and grew up in Muscatine, Iowa. He graduated magna cum laude with a B.A. from Brown University in 1982.

He was awarded an M.D. from Harvard Medical School in 1991, and a Ph.D. from Harvard University, Department of Anthropology, in 1993.

Dr. Kim is married to Dr. Younsook Lim, a pediatrician and the couple has two young sons. He is actively involved in a variety of sports including basketball, volleyball, tennis and golf.

Robert A. Ceplikas, a 1978 graduate of Dartmouth College and 30-year veteran of the college’s staff in athletics and admissions assumed the role of Acting Director of Athletics and Recreation on July 1, 2009.

Ceplikas will serve for the 2009-2010 academic year while the college conducts a national search for a successor to Josie Harper, who served as the college’s seventh athletics director for the past seven years before retirement.

As Acting Director, Ceplikas oversees 34 varsity sports (16 men’s, 16 women’s, and two coed) as well as comprehensive club sports and intramural programs in which nearly three-quarters of Dartmouth’s undergraduates participate.

Ceplikas has been the Deputy Director of Athletics for the past 15 years, serving under both Harper and former Athletics Director Dick Jaeger. He currently oversees the department’s annual giving programs including the Athletic Sponsor Program (to support recruiting) and individual sports’ Friends Groups. Total donations have grown nearly four times from approximately $500,000 to nearly $2 million annually during his tenure.

With extensive supervisory experience, Ceplikas has most recently overseen varsity athletics communications, and marketing and promotions.

He has also played a pivotal role in long-range planning and assisted the athletics director with external relations and overall management of the department.

Upon graduating from Dartmouth in 1978, Ceplikas joined the college’s admissions office, where he held four different positions in his 11 years on staff. For six of those years (1979-85), he also was an assistant coach for the Big Green women’s hockey team, helping build that program from a fledgling varsity squad to a competitive team. After earning a master’s degree in education from Stanford University in 1990, Ceplikas returned to his alma mater as an athletics administrator, which led to his appointment as Deputy Director of Athletics in 1994.

Ceplikas and his wife Lynn, an English teacher at Hanover High School, reside in Lebanon. Their daughter, Holly ’13, is a freshman at Dartmouth and son Luke is a junior in high school.

What do you want to be when you grow up? I want to be helping people around the world gain access to affordable medicines and quality health care. I believe everyone has the right to health, and I want to do whatever it takes to make everyone able to exercise that right.

What do you like most about putting on a Dartmouth lacrosse uniform? I love the connection I feel with the generations of Dartmouth Lacrosse players that have come before me. I grew up in awe of college lacrosse players, and I feel a sense of responsibility and privilege when I put on this jersey to represent the strength, commitment, and pride of Dartmouth Lacrosse.

Favorite hangout spot on campus: When it’s warm out, or warm enough out, my favorite hangout spot on campus is the green. There is nothing better than seeing everyone sprawled out on the green basking in the sun. It’s seriously the best place on campus when the weather is just perfect.

Favorite place to study on campus: Sanborn Library. This is the English Library and it has the perfect amount of light and comfortable seating as well.

It is also rarely overcrowded.

What is your major & why? English major with a concentration in creative writing. I decided to be an English major after taking many different classes because I have a true passion for writing and reading literature. I decided on concentrating in creative writing because I am more interested in writing than in English theory and creative writing gave me the opportunity to work in nonficition, which is what I love to do best. I like the small classes in the creative writing department and the opportunity to get to know my classmates What do you want to be when you grow up? A writer. I would love to be a journalist or work as a profile writer. Every time I meet someone I tell myself, “they would make such a great story!”

When I put on my Dartmouth lacrosse uniform I feel as though all of the hard work that has led up to this one game has paid off. I know that by putting on my uniform all of the team’s effort, desire, and work ethic have made this all possible.

Have you ever met anyone famous? Halle Berry What is your major & why? I’m double majoring in government and sociology modified with economics. I took a class sophomore fall that got me hooked on development, and government, sociology and economics all have a ton of development related classes.

What was your first job? I worked for $2 a day as a camp counselor for little kids at my summer club during middle school.

Dartmouth women’s lacrosse has been consistently represented in the United States Women’s National Team program.

Former players Whitney Douthett ’07, midfield, and Devon Wills ’06, goalkeeper, were among the 18 women on the US Elite Team that captured the 2009 FIL Women’s World Cup in Prague. Both played an integral role in Team USA’s impressive 7-0 tear through the tournament, including two one-goal wins over Australia. Wills shined brightest in the championship game, an 8-7 victory for the US over Australia in which she surrendered just four goals, earning Most Valuable Player honors. After serving a yellow card penalty, during which time the US gave up three goals to pull within one, Wills returned for the final 1:45, made a big save and cleared the ball for the win.

Current seniors Colleen Olsen ’10 and Julie Wadland ’10 are part of the US Developmental Team this year. It is the secondstraight selection for Wadland, while Olsen made her debut on the team this summer. Head Coach Amy Patton served as head of that program from 2006-2009.

Already one of the most picturesque and exciting places to play collegiate lacrosse in the Northeast, Dartmouth took Scully-Fahey Field, opened in 2000, to the next level in 2008. Starting that spring, the Big Green took to its home field on a brand new infill FieldTurf surface, replacing the original AstroTurf. The state-of-theart surface is kinder on legs, handles the ball in a more grass-like fashion and is the choice of the nation’s elite programs. The team also moved into its new locker room, housed in the Sports Pavilion adjacent to the field during the 2008 season.

The $4.75 million Scully-Fahey Field is named in honor of Donald Scully ’49 and Peter Fahey ’68 and their families. Scully was a two-time All-America for Dartmouth lacrosse while Fahey was a varsity basketball and track athlete.

Scully-Fahey is lighted for night games and has permanent seating for 1,600 fans, who create both a thrilling and intimidating environment, coming out in force to support the Big Green. Since 2000, Dartmouth women’s lacrosse has hosted eight NCAA Tournament games at Scully-Fahey, going 7-1 in those contests.

THE DARTMOUTH PLAN

The “D-Plan” is a unique and flexible calendar system that provides students with unparalleled opportunities to design an educational program that is most closely suited to their needs, interests and aspirations.

The system, based on four 10-week terms per year, allows for students to easily engage in Dartmouth’s many off-campus study programs as well as numerous internship opportunities. Students may include terms of on-campus study, off-campus study in Dartmouth programs or at other institutions, or leave terms.

The D-Plan allows students to arrange for jobs and internships during any non-summer term, avoiding the scramble that often occurs in the summer. More than 65 percent of Dartmouth students will go abroad during their college career.

Dartmouth women’s lacrosse players are no exception to the D-Plan’s opportunities. Most will take terms away from Hanover in the fall of their junior year.

I could not have asked for a more amazing opportunity during my time in college. My time spent volunteering in Morocco helped me learn first hand about a unique language and religion, gave me time to explore a new country and continent, and empowered me to make positive changes to the world in the future. The five weeks I spent in Morocco are some of the most memorable in my life. I will never forget riding a camel into the Sahara dessert or helping make the children at the orphanage smile.

As an art history major, working and studying abroad in Italy was an experience beyond anything I could have imagined.

Working at a well known art gallery in the heart of Florence was an incredible opportunity, and I learned something new about the art management world every day. One of the most interesting parts of my internship was working directly with artists and hearing about their individual artistic development. They have to use the feedback from their clients, positive or negative, in order to mature and develop into a successful artist. Being abroad was a totally new cultural experience unlike anything I have ever done, and I feel so lucky that I got the chance to be in such a beautiful place for an entire term. The D-Plan is definitely creates excellent opportunities for Dartmouth student-athletes.

I spent my off term this fall in Cape Town, South Africa, working at a microfinance consulting group, PlaNet Finance.

The team I worked with (there were 10 of us) was young, energetic, and enthusiastic, and I was able to have real responsibilities at the company.

Some of my favorite memories from my term include bungee jumping, hiking “lions head” and seeing the unbelievable view from the top, and the four-day safari I went on at the end of my trip. Living on my own in a foreign city helped me mature as a person and prepared me for the day that I am forced to leave the comfort of Dartmouth.

To me, the chance to go abroad is one of the most rewarding experiences Dartmouth offers. Being away gave me the chance to gain perspective on my experience thus far at Dartmouth and reminded me of all the things I love and sometimes take for granted about being at Dartmouth.

Brown • Columbia • Cornell • Dartmouth • Harvard • Penn • Princeton • Yale Sponsoring conference championships in 33 men’s and women’s sports, and averaging more than 35 varsity teams at each school, the Ivy League provides intercollegiate athletic opportunities for more men and women than any other conference in the country.

The Ivy League’s successful competition in Division I national athletics is achieved by approaching athletics as a key part of the student’s regular undergraduate experience: with rigorous academic standards, the nation’s highest four-year graduation rates and without athletics scholarships. Ivy athletic programs receive multi-million-dollar institutional support as part of each institution’s overall academic programs.

Since 2000 alone, the Ivy League:

• Produced 47 NCAA individual/event champions in fencing, women’s swimming and diving, women’s rowing, men’s indoor track & field, men’s outdoor track and field, women’s indoor track and field, women’s outdoor track and field and wrestling while earning 11 NCAA team championships in fencing, men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse and women’s rowing.

• Amassed nearly 100 All-Americans each year.

• Averaged more than a dozen Academic All-Americans each year, including an all-time high of 18 in 2006-07, for a total of 136 student-athletes honored.

• Had 204 competitors at the five Olympic Games (2000, 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2008).

Those 204 athletes collected 81 medals, including 28 gold. At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China, the League boasted 42 athletes who took home 14 medals.

• Boasts numerous athletes currently in the professional ranks of Major League Baseball, Major League Lacrosse, the National Football League, the National Hockey League, and the recently founded Women’s Pro Soccer League.

• Became the first conference to sweep the four major NCAA Honors in the same year (2006) — Columbia’s Robert Kraft claiming the Theodore Roosevelt Award; Princeton’s John Doar the Inspirational Award; Yale’s Susan Wellington a Silver Anniversary Award; and Brown’s Nick Hartigan a Top VIII Award.

• Became the second conference with three of the six NCAA Silver Anniversary Award winners in the same year (2007) — Dartmouth’s Gail Koziara Boudreaux, Brown’s Steve Jordan and Yale’s Patricia Melton.

• Posted far and away the best record in Division I, across all sports and conferences, in the first three annual compilations (2007-09) of the NCAA’s Academic Progress Rate.
