2013 JOE MANCHIN TOURNAMENT

A Message From

Jamie Shoemaker - Athletic Director

Welcome to the 32 Annual Joe Manchin Tournament at Salem International University! This Tournament is a fitting tribute to a man who has spent countless hours working for the good of the people of this University, this region and the great state of West Virginia. I couldn’t think of a better way to head into the holiday season and the new year than to honor a man who dedicated his life to helping others. The Joe Manchin Tournament has been and will remain a highlight of the University’s basketball season. We look forward to witnessing the outstanding play during the next eight contests ahead of us. The Tournament would not be possible without the support and help from the entire Athletic Staff. A special thanks goes out to Sports Information Director David Oliverio for his tireless work to ensure the tournament is ran smoothly with his crew. Without his crew, the games simply could not be played. Business Manager and Senior Women’s Administrator Denise McIntire has been essential in planning and conducting the tournament. You’ll find her smiling face around the hospitality rooms or the ticket section. Also, be sure to give a thanks to our Softball Team and Marcy Potts in the concession stand for the outstanding service and food throughout the tournament. I also want to give thanks to the rest of the SIU family for their support and assistance during the tournament. Our Tournament Hosts from our Salem Community act as our ambassadors to our visiting teams. Last, but not least, our teams, coaches, trainers, fans, Days Inn, and the Wingate Inn have all been supportive and treat our visiting teams well. A lot of hands go into play for this tournament and my page just isn’t long enough to give thanks to all. I wish all the teams good luck and safe travels as the tournament concludes. I sincerely hope that everyone enjoys the tournament as much as we do. Go Tigers! nd

Central State Marauders

About Central State

Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio, is one of the nation’s oldest historically black universities, with a 125-year legacy of academic and athletic achievements.

The CSU Institute for Urban Education (IUE) builds on Central State’s roots as a center of excellence for teacher education. It also reflects the College of Education’s emphasis on preparing teachers for work in today’s urban classrooms. Housed in the newly constructed Center for Education and Natural Sciences (CENS), the IUE serves as a national resource center for the training of urban teachers and the exchange of scholarship on urban education issues. A newly developed program in environmental engineering builds on CSU’s signature Water Resource Management Program, and a new major in criminal justice will further expand career opportunities for Central State University students.

Player To Watch

CSU is Ohio’s only predominately African American public institution of higher education, but it is, and has always been, “open to all persons of good moral character,” as ordained by the 1887 legislation that created Central State’s predecessor. The University actively promotes diversity in its student body, faculty and staff, even as the institution adheres to its core historical responsibility to educate young African American men and women.
