Healthy Smiles for Healthy Pets By Dr. Nick Bricaud, DVM Blackhawk Veterinary Hospital

I

t would be great if our pets could brush their own teeth daily, but the truth is they can’t. It’s our responsibility as their providers to do what we can to help them maintain healthy mouths. Preventing dental disease is important as it is irreversible and can lead to other health issues including liver or kidney disease. Signs your pet may be experiencing dental disease include bad breath (halitosis), swollen/ inflamed gums, loose or discolored teeth, a sensitive mouth, bleeding from the mouth, or loss/decreased appetite. The most effective treatment for dental disease is a dental cleaning under full anesthesia which allows for thorough cleaning of the teeth and under the gums. The newly cleaned teeth can then be maintained with daily brushing. With proper maintenance and preventative care, your pet can live a dental disease free life! Please contact Blackhawk Veterinary Hospital for more information on oral health and dental procedures.
