KEVIN OAKES A very warm welcome this afternoon to the players, management and supporters of Charlton based Bridon Ropes for what is our fourth 1st v 2nd league clash this season.

Whilst I don’t know them personally at time of writing, I have watched Bridon Ropes at least three times over the past few months and they are a good side who score a lot of goals and we’ll need to be on our game today to ensure we get something out of the match.

A rare league defeat last weekend, losing 3-2 away to Stansfeld, meant our excellent run came to an end. Nothing lasts forever, and I’m pretty sure the management and players know that too, and today and the coming weeks will be about how we react to that result and performance and whether we can start another great league run, starting today.

Fortunately results elsewhere meant that whilst losing was disappointing, it was slightly improved by our rivals also dropping points, and therefore our league position still looks strong.

Another positive performance and result today will only strengthen that so please do support the lads as positively as you can.

MANAGER’S NOTES Good afternoon and a warm welcome to the players, officials and management of Bridon Ropes, and to our match officials.

In our last home match we faced Glebe in the cup and I thought we put on a decent performance but just couldn’t get that goal that would of made the game interesting. It was a real test given they are from the league above us.

Then last weekend we had our first defeat in the league away to Stansfeld. In the first 30 minutes I thought we were on top and we got the first goal from a Ryan Golding penalty,

but from there took our foot off the gas a little and didn’t work hard enough, and we ultimately got what we deserved.

So, we start again today. We’ve had a good chat at training in the week so I expect us to go on another good run.

Saturday 10th November Sadly our long unbeaten run in the league came to an end last weekend – a run that had seen us lose just once in the league in 19 months progressing us 4 divisions in the process as well as numerous cup triumphs.

A disappointing performance and result meant a 3-2 defeat to an improving Stansfeld side featuring ex-football league player Luke Rooney. Playing a side sure to be physical and in our faces from the off we got exactly that and it took us a little while to get going in between lots of free-kicks and breaks in play.

Half chances at both ends never really threatened either keeper and it took until 25mins for the first real talking point when a bit of all-in wrestling in front of the dugouts led to a talking to for a Stansfeld player and complaints and arguments from both benches.

The first goal of the games came on the half hour as Welling broke from a Stansfeld corner and jelly-legs Enoch Adjei drove in to the box and was fouled to give us a penalty. Despite complaints from Stansfeld players, the referee was little more than two yards away and did not hesitate. The penalty was safely dispatched by Golding for his 19th of the season to maintain his position as the top scorer in the division.

Close of his heels is Rooney with 11

double figures from midfield already and it was he who brought the equaliser within a few minutes. A strong header from the Stansfeld captain at centre half could have been adjudged to have led with an elbow on Ryan Golding who received a cut lip and considerable verbal abuse from the touchline for his troubles, and as the play broke Rooney curled an effort from range beautifully in to the far corner beyond Jack Moore in goal to make it 1-1.

Before the break another great strike from an angle put Stansfeld in front.

Half Time Stansfeld 2-1 Welling Town Rarely behind it was reaction time. Pushing forwards chances remained in short supply although we did have a lot more pressure and territory as we played down the hill. Eagerness to equalise, and changes in personnel, led to Stansfeld mainly hitting us on the break, and indeed one of those chances after they got in on the right hand side led to another great chance and

after it looked like we had forced them away from goal, a clean strike beat both keeper and three defenders who had retreated on to the goal line and it was 3-1.

Sods Law resulted in an almost immediate goal back with 20 minutes to go. Sub Sam Bailey ducked and dived on the right hand side before crossing in to the box and with Arlie and Golding sniffing around an outstretched defender poked it home for an own goal, although Sam maintains its his as it was on target, and it was game on.

Lots of huff and puff, and no lack of effort, sadly didn’t bring clear cut chances and Stansfeld to their credit battled for their lives in defence. The frustration of all was summed up when a long ball in to the box in the 92nd minute was headed home by Golding who celebrated an equaliser, only to see the linesman’s flag lifted and a referee’s whistle blown, for what was judged a foul on the goalkeeper, and it was game over and a rare defeat.

Senior Team Honours Bridon Ropes F.C. began life as a factory team back in 1935. It was formed from workers at the British Ropes Works in Charlton, London, and became known as British Ropes F.C.

London Spartan League 2 Winners 1992-1993

In the early days the club played in various minor local leagues until eventually joining the South London Amateur League, a few years later they started playing in the Greater London League which they left in 1975 to join the London Spartan League, still under the name of British Ropes, but in 1990 the factory changed its name to Bridon Ropes and the football club changed its name to Bridon Sports.

Kent County League Division 1 Winners 2009-2010

They then won Division Two of the Spartan League in 1991–92 and the London Junior Cup. In 1992–93 the club changed its name to Bridon Ropes FC. 17

In 1997–98 they became founder members of the Spartan South Midlands Football League Division One South, however they left the league the following season to become founder members of the London Intermediate League.

Bridon Ropes later joined the Kent County League Division One and were champions in the 2009–10 season, achieving promotion to the Premier Division.

In 2011–12 they became founder members of the Kent Invicta Football League.

This time last year we played Dulwich Village in the West Kent Challenge Shield as we continued our successful defence of the competition from the season before. Indeed the trophy still sits in my lounge now where it has done for over 18 months.

Having already scored six goals against them earlier in the season in the league, we followed that up with a strong 5-2 win with the goals coming from Ryan Golding (2) and a rare hattrick for captain Chris Ware returning to the scoring days of his youth.

Golding went on to lift the golden boot for the division come the end of the season, sadly Chris’s ended early with a leg break, but he still managed a remarkable 9 goals from midfield in just 14 starts – not bad given he took no penalties or free-kicks amongst them.

The line-up that day was: Moore, Chentouf, Blenordah, Weber, Hardie, Hepburn, Smith, Hubbard, Elmes, Ware and Golding. Subs: Daramy, Piro and Prosser.

SUNDAY’S BEST welling town sunday team’s report Another week off for Erron and Blaine’s Sunday side meant the focus was firmly on the founding Sunday side in their continued race for silverware.

Taking on Junior Reds Athletic for the second time this season, having beaten them comprehensively 7-3 earlier in the season, we put loads past them again in a 7-2 win.

Despite having the division’s top scorer in their ranks, with 15 league goals in just 7 games, the difference in class amongst the rest of the squads was as apparent as the previous league game and we registered at least 20 shots on goal and despite having scored seven never really got going.

Signs for the season look good with December fixtures out looking favourable, and cup draws working in our favour, meaning that we should be able to continue our strong start to the season. Having scored 7, 5 and 8 in our last three games the lads are full of confidence and looking forward to an extended stay at the top of the division as well as another cup final we hope.

Welling Town Reserves returned to winning ways with a convincing 3-0 win over Bromleians Reserves last Saturday.

The squad had five changes from last week’s draw and lined up in an attacking 4-3-3.

From the kick-off we played high pressing football.

With at least ten clear cut chances in the first half it was surprising the game was goalless at half time.

Three changes at half time saw the introduction of Ozzie, Fred and Dilan.

Within five minutes of the restart Liam Birks gave the Boots the opener with a bullet header that hit the crossbar, bounced down and out with the Ref confirming it had crossed the line. 1-0.

Goals two and three came quickly after with a brace from substitute Fred.

A through ball from Marcus was fired in by Fred with the outside

of his right boot to lob the Bromleians keeper. 2-0.

The third goal was a well worked set piece that fell for Fred in the 18-yard box and he buried it in the bottom corner.

At 3-0 with 30 minutes I made a number of changes and saw the game out comfortably.

From a manager’s point of view it was an almost perfect game. The players played some excellent passing football and the only frustrating thing was we didn’t score in the first half.

youth focus Welling Town and Welling Youth to partneR • JOINT STATEMENT We’re delighted to confirm that after several weeks of discussions we have reached agreement to partner our youth system with Welling Youth, with their existing sides moving to play via our club from the start of 2019/20, in addition to our current youth sides and others looking to join our growing club.

Welling Town are delighted to announce a new and exciting link up with Welling Youth that will see their numerous youth sides - currently in excess of 20 - play under the Welling Town name from 2019/20.

Kevin Oakes, Chairman said: “Welling Youth’s Louis Dean, his father Jim and many of his staff and former players are well known to me personally through all of our years of involvement either working with or supporting National League South side Welling United.

“With their separation from United a couple of years ago, there was an opportunity for a semi-professional side to work alongside them to provide a pathway for young players under their umbrella to progress to adult football.

“We believe we offer them that opportunity, and this is somewhat already proven by at least three of our first team squad in Sam Bailey, Enoch 21

Adjei and Jack Moore having come through the Welling ranks as kids.

“With their sides playing in the SelKent and Kent Youth Leagues, as well as a number of former Bostik Development league young adults, we are excited about the opportunities that this will bring for Welling Town in the future.

“It will provide a conveyor belt of well coached, organised, motivated lads taught properly, and we look forward to allowing those who are ready to progress in to our already setup under 23s, reserves and in time the first team.
