BEIJING, CHINA JUNE 2016 - JULY 2016 COLLABORATION

SPECIFICATION The project is located in Qingta Hutong, Beijing, near Baita Temple. The design retains the original function, combining with cafe and outdoor gallary in order to provide entertaining space for residents and designers. The project consist of a single-storey cafe and outdoor stairs, which help creating various space experience. For the site has extremely limited space, we decide to apply a huge mirror wall to extend the vision boundary. The design is to insist the importance of the communication between the old and the new, the elderly and the young generation.

Unlike the typical quadrangle courtyard in Beijing, there are numbers of small courtyard like cells in the old district.

"Courtyards", is an important element of the Beijing old district. For a long time, people in Beijing have spent their time working, entertaining and living in these courtyards. The courtyards take very limited space or even narrow. However, people have lived in there for generations, they live with hardness and happiness.

The life in there is part of real life in Beijing, as well as the epitome of the old districts in China.

After having experienced the rapid development in China for about three decades, the old districts cannot keep their pace with the society. Therefore, as designers, we have to work out a plan.

SPECIFICATION Dundee, a city that was defined by its industry, locals were renowned for their hardiness. Dundee’s jute industry brought the stimulus to the region in the form of employment and civic buildings constructed with the proceeds. The mills had the largest impact on the development of the city. Tenements closely organized around the local works with closeknit communities pack into the street and lanes. Communities fragmented as families and the young moved in search of employment opportunities and redevelopment throughout the city replaced the fabric of tenements with low quality council flats and housing.

Current Site Situation Currently there are several commercial shops running in the site and some of them are quite popular around the area. Clearly I cannot simply remove all of them from the area because some of them are quite popular and still gain profit, like Clark’s Bakery.

As presented in the table on the right house prices at our site increased rapidly in past 15 years. This causes high demand for affordable housing at the location.

We are aware of continuous housing crisis throughout the whole Scotland and therefore in our project we will attempt to solve these by providing a high number of general affordable housing at the site, but also highly specified housing for special needs and other mixed development.

There is a altitude difference between the site and Annfield Street, which is about 2.4m. Therefore, the garden at the north of buildings will be enclosed by building and the gap.

The pink space, the garden at the south of buildings will face right to Annfield Row without altitude difference.

I'll keep as much the same area for each shop. I keep the existing shops on the ground floor. Flats are on the upper floor. In this case, all the residents will have a good view of the River and are separated from the commercial shop.

SPECIFICATION Society is never static. The future is uncertain, and the present must be adaptable. In the past, human activities were largely based on tradition and the changes took place at a slow pace.

However, on the opposite, at present development in every aspect of society is accelerating, and technologic and cultural changes happen everywhere.

These complex and numerous factors turn out that the environment and conditions of designing a building will change dynamically over time.

Therefore, building can no longer be designed for one single project only and should adapts to variations of programmes during its life circle without unnecessary demolition to the building.

Concept of Adaptability

This project is set in the city of Mainz, Germany.

The city is located on the Rhine river: a major transportation route through Europe and formerly a natural (and contested) barrier between France and Germany. The city boasts a rich Roman history and is the birthplace of the Printing Press.

Neccessity of Adaptability

Adaptability in Layers

Architecture is all about human activities.

Activities create space. Architecture consist of various space for different activities. Activities happen diversely according to personal wish of the users and define the functions of space.

Building, since its appearance in history, are made to be static. Now the reality of architecture is the predominance of single-use or multi-use building with static form (Lucas Kielion).

The ultimate aim of adaptability is the ability to respond to changes over time.

Once inevitable changes occur, layers can be maintained or adapted individually without affecting or at least demolishing other layers, minimizing the penalty of time, effort, cost and performance.

Adaptability of Timber 1) Prefabricated components With advanced technique in the factory, the components of timber structure can be processed precisely in the factory.

After transported to the site, workers are able to assemble these components fast together. Prefabricated in factory, the timber components, like beams, wall, roof, stairs, are put into mass production, which means that if the components are damaged it is very fast to replace another one.

2) Structure-Extension As mentioned above, the Cidori system provides a possibility of structure extension. Hence, after several decades, if the building needs to extend or downsize in order to adapt its new environment, the adaptability of structure will surely enable the building meeting the new requirement.

The construction system has the ability of extend and cut down itself. On the base of it, after several years or decades, the building context changes and the client may have a wish to scale up the building to introduce more capital and business. The structure system will be able to provide the possibility. Normally, when clients and designers want to extend the scale of a building, usually they just simply add things like attachments onto the building. However, in this structure system, clients will be able to add structure components like playing Lego. For instance, the area next to my site will be available in the next several years. The building can easily extend itself to take the area.

SPONGE CITY | MASSIVE HOUSING LOCATION DATE PROPERTY

WUHAN, CHINA MAY 2017 - JUNE 2017 COLLABORATION

SPECIFICATION China's sponge city initiative aims to arrest this cycle through the use of permeable surfaces and green infrastructures.

The concept sponge city is a brand new concept of city water management. It means that city have a decent ability of coping with the disaster that rain and flood bring. City can absorb and retain the water when storming, then purify and release the water after the storm.

Traditionally city takes advantage of pipes and pump to drain the water when flood is coming. The main purpose of traditional concept is to drain fast, which usually lead to flood. However, Sponge city require city to rely on landscape and pavememt, to drain dispersedly, rather than intensively, which will not lead to massive flooding.

Commercial Building Cultural Building Those who live in Ningsong Community are mostly the elderly. They prefer staying toghter chatting, dancing.

They are in charge of raising grandkids with their working during the day-time.

Housing Distribution

In 2016, following flooding in Wuhan, in China's central Hubei province, authorities issued an orange alert for heavyu rain in central and southern parts of China. T alert is the second highest of China's four-tier warning system for rainstorms.

Current issue 1. Due to the lack of function diversity and low desity, the site value is not as high as its surrounding site with well planned highrise apartment.

2. The family structure changes cause communication problems between the yound and the old.

3. The need to increase the water-hold capacity and space diversity.

Most of them wish to spend some time with their families, especially the kids.

Normally, people can do their daily activities outside. When weather is good, the residents will go outside their house and do what they want to do.

When flood comes people will not be trapped inside their house. Although the ground might be flooded with water people can still do activities on the platform.

GREEN ROOF

THE GROWING PART The living part of the roof is water’s entry point into a complex, multilayered storm water treatment system. Several species of greenery live on the roof, rooted in a compressed mixture of shale, sand, peat and dolomite.

Generally green roof have five layers.

A root barrier prevent roots from penetrating. A protection mat helps to minimize punctures. The drainage layer allows heavy rain to run off to a perimeter drain yet still retain moisture for dry periods. A filter sheet stops fine particles from clogging the drainage layer. And the growing medium, typically an engineered material and not soil, provides nutrients for plants above.

Layer hold water that can diffuse upward as vapor when the growing medium dries. The honeycomb structure allows storm water to drain and provides aeration for roots.

NOURISHMENT A layer of material under the plants holds just enough water to provide nourishment.

DRAIN LAYER The third layer drain any water not used to sustain life on the rooftop into building’s gutters and drain pipes.

PROTECTION MAT. Protect underlying roof from water, root and other damage.

BLUE ROOF Blue roofs are used for temporary rooftop rainfall storage. The roofs control the water flow through waterflow-limiting facility. Sometimes the roofs can hold rainfall temporarily to increase the time that rainfall water flow takes to travel down to the city drainage system. So it will relieve the pressure of the city drainage system.

ROOF BARRIER Keep the roof from other potential damage and penetrating.

LAYERS OF PLAZA PAVEMENT CLEAN WATER Water from the storage basins drains into man-made greenland.

The naturally filtered water then drains into the nearby streams or rivers.

THE STORAGE BASINS Through pipes on the rooftop and down the insides of the building, water drains into storage basins both on the rooftop and in the bottom of the building that has been covered with pavement and serves as a water plaza for the whole community.

THE WATER PLAZA The plaza is covered with honeycombed porous bricks which allows water both from the rooftop and rainfall to seep down into the basin under the plaza.

In the lower part, it was arranged to make interior private and exterior public. So I make every two or three rooms into a unit sharing one publice space.
