Build a CAD Standard into your AutoCAD Environment PREFACE Use your Standard environment to create STANDARD DATA in the 1st Place There are mainly two different approaches to CAD Standards: The Classic CAD Standard Approach Vs the Modern CAD Standard Approach The Classic Approach has a robust documentation and needs to be monitored and/or enforced in order to be Compliant.

The Modern Approach is short on textual rules and actually releases the user by facilitating and providing features, tools, procedures and workflows that are all managed. The Modern CAD Standard Approach leads to Standard DATA creation in the 1st place so the need of monitoring and/or enforcing are practically neglected.

If in the case of the Classic CAD Standard Approach, this Standard Compliance is a burden for the CAD operator, in the Modern CAD Standard Approach, it’s all about shortcuts, Ease-of-Use, Productivity and Best Practices.

elcome to The STANDARD ENVIRONMENT Module. The Module you just purchased is based on proven methodology. This has been successfully tested in a classroom.

In order to distill exactly the knowledge and Know-how that will let you implement those seamlessly, only the Best practices have been selected, very carefully. Optimizing achievements is the backbone of serving the knowledge. This module have no pretention to deal with all the AutoCAD features yet, you’ll be served the most reliable and compact tool-set money can buy.

Session # 1 Tool Palettes are the CAD Operator’s Best Friends

Tool Palettes

Whether you are inserting a BLOCK, writing down an ANNOTATION or creating a DIMENSION you are dealing with 2 totally different kinds of Time Consumers: 1. AutoCAD Uptime – you are actually creating DATA 2. AutoCAD Downtime – you’re moving your creation to a LAYER, you are changing your creation’s Style, Messing around with Annotative Features, etc. The less AutoCAD Downtime – The more Productive you get!

The Tool Palettes have been part of AutoCAD’s for many years and most AutoCAD Users tend to relate them mainly to Content Libraries but in fact, any AutoCAD Feature that one needs to be managed, will better reside within a Tool Palette.

The Tool Palettes approach towards its contents completely differs BLOCK Insertions which are connected to a DWG Source File and all other features that keep the Feature’s Properties Saved within the Palette itself.

A Tool Palette might domain it’s residents’ properties as saved at the time of dragging a feature into the palette (Layer, Linetype, Scale, Rotation Angle, Attribute Default Values, etc.

One of the best ways to get familiar with your TOOL PALETTE residents’ properties is to get used to the Quick Properties (that many users tend to close). For a singular time for each object, one should customized the Quick Properties of the object selected so you see (and have access to change) just beside your cursor…

If you touch a specific Block, you might want to know about its Layer, Color, Scale, etc. If you lack any Information, click while in the selection at the CUI (Customize User Interface) button to Add/Remove Properties. Lucky for you, this is done only once…

Tool Palettes

(Click to Watch) Customizing your AutoCAD Quick Properties CREATE Your 1st Tool Palette A) Open the Mail Message Called (subject) CAD Environment Session1, download the ZIP File and Extract it to your C:\!!eL-sophisticadd (Folder).

B) Open Your AutoCAD and Open the DWG file Called “Session 1” C) To open the tool palettes, click Control + 3 or locate the Tool Palettes Icon in the Palettes Panel @ the View Ribbon.

D) Right click on a palette (DARK GREY SIDE STRIP and select the NEW PALETTE Option E) Name Your Palette Now (or later).

F) Select a Linear Dimension and Drag and Drop it into the Palette G) Copy and Paste within the Palette H) Using the Right Arrow Create a Continue Dimension.

Repeat (G) and Use the Arrow for another option like Aligned Dimension and/or Quick Dimensions, etc.

I) Now for something completely Different: TYPE CUI and Enter, beneath the Command List, type DIMSPACE (Figure # 1) and then Drag the Icon into Your New Palette J) Drag and Drop a Polyline in Layer Wall-XT into the Palette K) Using the Same Method as in (I), locate a Rectangle and Drag and Drop it into your Palette. Select it, right click and opt for Properties, Select the Layer to be the same Wall-XT for the Rectangle.

L) Now Select a Hatch Pattern, drag and drop it into your Figure # 1 palette and check that all the task satisfy you. Need a repair, right click and change an item’s properties.

TIP: Use DIMSPACE to set different Dimension Spacing According to Annotation Scale – For instance use 50 for AutoCAD 1:5 or 100 for AutoCAD’s 1:10

Dimension(s) Best Practices: One of the best things to do is set the dimensions to be Associative and turn-on the Annotation Monitor to make it possible to control Dimensions and Multileaders in such a way that will always react to geometry or show if there is a problem that needs our Attention.

Dimension Styles should be minimized to 2-3 MAX.; should be Annotative – of course…

Session # 1 – Summary 1) If properly implemented, tool palettes will offer a great tool for AutoCAD Uptime (only) DATA Creation Work. Actually working from within a Palette will set you free from dealing with most objects’ properties from now on.

2) The data management from within the Tool Palettes will be achieved easier if you adapt your Objects’ Quick Properties to your Needs by Customizing the QPs to suit your needs.

3) Unlike what many AutoCAD Users tend to think about Tool Palettes, not only BLOCK insertions but any AutoCAD Feature whatsoever can be used and managed from within a TOOL PALETTE 4) Adopting Tool Palettes will enable you to enlarge your AutoCAD comfort zone, become much more productive, let you focus more on your Design Discipline and less in AutoCAD and of course, create Standard Data in the 1st place - wasting no AutoCAD Downtime.

Session # 2

The Tool Palettes can be stored at each PC or can reside in an accessible Network Drive. The Source files, will be at a public space accessible to everyone. The best practice is to lock the Tool Palette files so nobody can damage them. In this Session, we are going to import a Palette, create a Palette Group, Combine the Design Center to add some contents and let you decide where to keep the palettes you’re about to distribute to your team. Tool Palettes

Working systematically with Tool Palettes demands getting organized at the office/design team. It will be productive if a person or a small team will be responsible for creating & distributing the palettes to each and every user. In case the organization has a CAD Manager, it will be his/her responsibility but there is no need for writing any code so, an experienced CAD User will do.

ool palettes have been in AutoCAD for a while… and for that reason, you can’t always expect them to be totally up to date with features that were developed later.

Dimensions – for example – when dragged into a palette, will work as a managed feature helping you create new dimensions based on the selection dragged to the palette.

Yet, if the dimension selected was annotative and had some annotation scales attached to it, it won’t behave as I would expect it to behave. Nevertheless, in the next Video, you’ll see a workaround that will help you with that…

Here are some facts to consider when creating the tool palettes and managing its features: o

Tool Palettes will be a CAD-Standard-Catalyzing mechanism – Tool palettes will introduce data in the Standard Layer (with all the standard properties attached) even though the layer does not exist

o

Tool Palettes will manage your Standard Styles (Dimensions, Annotations, tables, etc.)

o

Some features will create new objects based on the pre-managed properties and others will be inserting predefined and managed objects such as: Multileaders, for example, will act as pre-typed annotations and behave in a very flexible way, save time and error, come to the right layer, at a Standard Multileader Style, yet be ready to edit, spread, change its rotation, etc.

o

Not everything is perfect, so sometimes you won’t find the right property within a feature - you can always create a workaround to solve this!

Download and extract the Session 2.ZIP File.

Open the DWG files.

Open your Tool Palettes (Control + 3).

Right click on a palette (DARK GREY SIDE STRIP and select the CUSTOMIZE PALETTES… Option.

As seen in the Video, create a new palette group and name it (You can always rename it later).

At the left side of the CUSTOMIZE Dialog Box, select a palette and drag it beneath your new palette group.

After closing everything, right-click again on the DARK GREY SIDE STRIP and select your group (Palette Group) – The Palettes underneath the group at the right will appear, you can change the order of appearance by dragging the palettes within the Group up or down.

Using Copy and Paste you might copy icons between palettes making the CAD User’s life easier

Session # 2 – Summary

1) Mastering Tool Palettes by Customizing will let you create Palette Groups and Palettes in general, get them organized to suit your needs.

2) There are some file formats to get familiar with: The Palettes are *.XTP files, Palette Groups are *.XTG Files. AutoCAD Creates a Folder called images in which it automatically the icon images are saved whenever a Palette is exported. Note that when importing the palette, your AutoCAD places this folder and check to find out what images you can find within this folder.

3) In order to function properly, in the case of BLOCK insertions, the same source file with the same path as saved in the palette should be present. If you need to place the source file(s) in a different location, you’ll need to update it globally within the palette.

4) You better drag a Block into a palette in its defaults (Insertion point, scale(s), rotation angle, etc.

When revising your Block Libraries, always be as systematic as possible so you can be sure what to expect while inserting (for example, a window might be created in horizontal position, the outside upwards, etc.

5) All other features dragged to the palette such as Dimensions, Multileaders, Imported CUI AutoCAD Commands and User-Defined Macros and Procedures will be saved within the Palette using no source file(s). Still this features can be managed since the selection itself or your later intervention will dictate properties like Layer, Style, etc.

ool Palette Distribution is critical to your design team. If properly implemented it will become the backbone of your CAD Standard. If everybody is using the same palettes based on the palettes correctly and systematically created, all the new DATA being created will be CAD Standard Compliant… Remember: This is not a Launch & Forget Missile but a system that need loving care and some maintenance: In the next Video, We simulate such maintenance

Session # 3 – Summary (& Assignment)

1) Now you are ready to experiment. You can do it using the files I created but I guess the best results will be achieved when using your own legacy, enhancing your own BLOCKS and creating your own Palettes.

2) Be careful! Make a copy of your source files and put it in a dedicated folder, create your palettes, Export and Import to check everything works properly and finally – simulate maintenance by editing a block or adding one.

3) Finally Re-Export & Re-Import to find your way.

Session # 4 Content Libraries Enhancement I Getting familiar with Dynamic Blocks PART I

Dynamic Blocks

Implementing the Tool Palettes as a part of creating a CAD Standard - by building it into a Standard environment – is a great opportunity to upgrade and enhance your content libraries. Static Blocks can be easily transformed into Dynamic Blocks. The complexity can be a crescendo mode process from getting a Static Block into the Block Editor environment for seconds, minutes up to an Hour.

The fastest and easiest parameters, like marked up in the figure (to the right) are Alignment, Visibility and/or Basepoint. Lookup Tables are a bit more complex yet, those are Action free parameters that can be applied in no-time. Watch the next Video to learn to apply the faster and easier parameters…

A bit more complex and sophisticated Dynamics - achieved by the combination of Parameters and Actions working together.

There is no limitation on Parameters connected to several actions. Dynamic Blocks were created to minimize the number of blocks in your library, obtain more flexibility, show / hide object components dealing with no layers. The Block’s Dynamics is limited only by the editor’s imagination but the editor should be focused on keeping everything simple so the average CAD Operator feels at home with the Dynamic Block, straightforward with no complications.

Sessions # 4 & 5 – Summary (& Assignment)

1) Minimizing the # of Blocks yet delivering more flexibility, better control and optional Data Extraction features are some of the advantages for upgrading Blocks & Contents Libraries.

2) You must experiment with this to get productive while turning your Static Blocks into Dynamic ones. The best practice is to grab a piece of paper (or a Hard-copy of you Block and mark everything you want your block to do. Consider the User-Friendliness of your block since you want all the design-team to implement it. Don’t go too complicated or over-sophisticated, keep it simple but don’t give up on functionality.

3) While considering complex components, think about Lego.

4) Open your mind and start now, intuition and trial & error will dictate your path.

Session # 6 Quick Access Toolbar(s) As in most popular software applications, in AutoCAD there is a Quick Access Toolbar.

Basically there 3 things that can be done to make additions to the Quick Access Toolbar: 1. Additions by Commands - Every Icon @ any Panel, right-clicked will offer the Add to Quick Access Toolbar option. Every Icon right-clicked on the Quick Access Toolbar will offer the Remove from Quick Access Toolbar option 2. Additional Commands by clicking on the icon at the right of the QAT (check to add) 3. Additions by the CUI (Customize User Interface).

Any command located can be dragged to the QAT (place it very carefully, otherwise you’ll have to remove it and place it again)

The Q A T is very useful since you are using commands not in the context of Specific Ribbons & Panels. Try to limit the number to the most useful commands - that do not appear in the close neighborhood like Plot (in each file tab) or any palettes like sheet set manager or properties that should be anchored for convenience.

Session # 6 – Summary (& Assignment) 1) One Singular QAT? Not necessarily. It’s true that one Quick Access Toolbar is displayed p/workspace but you can swap it with a different one according to your needs.

Session # 7 Setting Up Your Template File(s) Best File Parameters (Settings, Setvars) As a super-robust CAD platform, AutoCAD has hundreds of settings. Some of those are saved within the file and others in the System (Software).

File & System Best Parameters

In this Session, we deal with the best file parameters that will function as the invisible part of your template file(s). Later, when a new file is created, based on the template file, we can rely on its parameters. Using this templates will help us not just when creating new files: An existing CAD file can use the template as a vehicle to transform it into an upgraded file (using the best parameters) by using the template to create a new file, split your screen to view the new and the old side-by-side, drag all the data to its original coordinates in the new file, close the old file and save the new with the same name.

Session # 7 – Summary (& Assignment) 1) Reliable file parameters are crucial and consist on the invisible parts of a proper template file.

The better your investment on this, the most interest to collect for many years. If something is forgotten or neglected it will demand your attention again and again. Besides being annoying and time consuming, it’s not such a professional approach.

2) From now on, if you find a parameter and want to change it for good, do it at the template file, save it and that way the template file will keep upgrading till the perfection point is reached. This involves more determination than knowledge. This is the most long-lasting assignment I’ve ever given

Session # 9 Your AutoCAD Template Settings

Template Settings 

Drawing Template File Location (the place were AutoCAD looks for DWT when selecting a Template File) Sheet Set Template File Location (the place were AutoCAD looks for DST when selecting a Sheet Set Template File) Default Template for QNEW (Start a Quick New File using a specific predefined singular Template File Default Template for Sheet Creation (a Template File holding The Sheet Templates With Layouts and Page Setups)







In addition, you could have files to import from within: Layouts with or w/out Title Blocks, Page Setups, Layers, etc.

emplates are the one and only way to start a file (or a vehicle used to implement standard data on an existing one). There is really no difference between a DWG File and a DWT file but the extension name is there for keeping things in order.

How a proper template file looks like (Plain DWT or Template for QNEW)?

A) It has the parameters that suit you best B) It has minimal amount of Styles – Some styles won’t be easily imported by using the Tool Palette option. For example, Dimension styles defined as Annotative, won’t be defined in a new file as Annotative by using a dimension from the tool palette, importing the style from within the DesignCenter and least but not last, A Style cannot be dragged into a Tool Palette.

C) It has minimal amount of LAYERS that being special, are not imported by using the TPs and are sort of special layers (for Viewports, for Instructions [won’t plot], for XREFs, etc.)

D) Sometimes, it should have some Rectangles to create Named Views suiting different paper sizes @ specific scales.

E) Excluding Sheet Creation Templates, that’s about it.

Several Settings are Mandatory and some are Optional:

As seen at the left, in the Files Tab at the AutoCAD Options, you can find Paths for each Template Setting. All those are Singular Path Options, meaning, you cannot add more than one location for each Template Setting. On the other hand, at each location you might find a bunch of files to select from…

That’s not no flexible because Templates should be always public and those locations should be placed in a Network Drive.

Nowadays we are very mobile, and some people do their work from home, from another place and many come to the office with laptops. This is something to deal with in the IT level.

Furthermore, leaning totally on your server, might be problematic and at Downtime occasions, might multiply the downtime for the whole design team. That is certainly something to deal with since we want to make sure that everybody is creating Standard Data in the 1st Place. Many solutions can be found: You can create different profiles for launching AutoCAD with different Path Options when working Stand-Alone or in the framework of a Local (or other) Network. You can also get a solution from your Operating System. If the server is down, AutoCAD might look for secondary path at the local machine. In any case, while connected to the network, a script copying all the public relevant stuff should be copied to the local drives.

Session # 9 – Summary 1) If you or one of your colleagues create new data based on the Save As Option, consider that a lot of junk might be now part of your new data (chances are some is non-standard) so, not only that this is not a shortcut – but on the contrary – it creates extra AutoCAD Downtime (that is when you work but actually create nothing but extra work).

2) A proper set of Templates is an asset that has no replacement whatsoever. To turn it to be a proper one is not a one shot YouTube clip, it’s a process that involves determination, trial and error, but it’s sure worth it!
