Cover Story

At the start of the wedding season we felt there was really no one better to talk to than Shelley Lewin, The relationship architect (read guru). She discusses all things love related and offers up some sage advice on how to keep your relationship healthy and the spark alive (in all instances) but especially for couples who are planning their big day.

Shelley Lewin: The Relationship Architect By: Danni Thunell Ende How did you become THE relationship architect? I believe life is a design activity. There is no right or wrong recipe for living or relationships, only what you prefer to have. We are all the architects of our own lives. I learnt the hard way that love is not enough in a relationship. Love does not equal compatibility. If we have to sacrifice our dignity, self-respect, ambitions or the essence of who we are in order to maintain/ remain in a relationship, the relationship is destined for failure. Eventually, the resentment and frustration of not being yourself takes its toll on your emotional and physical wellbeing and you begin to hate yourself or your partner. In my 20's, I completed the Life Line personal development and counseling course which inspired me to become a counselor. I studied for 4 years at SACAP (South African College of Applied Psychology) which exposed me to a fairly progressive approach called Relationship Coaching. This approach has as its focus the future and solutions, rather than traditional helping methods of being past and problem focused. Facilitating a process that supports clients to find their own solutions (rather than me prescribing ideas about what I believe to be the best way) resulted in clients taking ownership for their lives and leaving with practical, pragmatic strategies to move forward. What are your tips for keeping the spark alive? We can approach sexuality in one of two ways. We can either wait until we are in the mood or we can allocate time to create an environment for

romance to blossom. Romance can begin when you wake up and greet each other with a response that shows “I am happy to see you”. It can be encouraged by creating a sacred space in the home (think soft lighting, scented candles etc), sharing sensual foods, watching/reading erotica, arousing touch and massage, playfulness with adult toys, experimentation, role playing, provocative dress and talking dirty. There is a multitude of ways to invite passion back into a stale relationship. It all starts, however, with connection. We have to want to want it. We need a desire to connect. For sure Gary Chapman's '5 Love Languages' play a large role in keeping romance alive i.e. knowing your partner's preferred language. Romance is a consequence of the ongoing choice to place your relationship as a priority. The 'spark' is not hidden in the person you're with; it's hidden in the behaviors' you exhibit when you bestow your adoration on your lover. It's that which ignites the spark. Can every relationship be fixed or is it sometimes better to part ways? They can be fixed but that doesn't mean they should be. Some people are just not good for each other. When we have 'met our match' they bring out the best in us. Sometimes though, we meet and marry people that we really want to be our best match, despite the evidence proving otherwise. They align with dreams and fantasies in our head. We ignore the warning signs. We stay married because of the shame and the guilt of

hurting the people around us, living a life of quiet desperation. A quality relationship leaves us feeling 'more than' good enough. It's how other people make us feel that's most important. What top 5 tips do you have for keeping a relationship strong during stressful times (like planning a wedding?) Most important is “don't sweat the small stuff”. Keep the relationship as a priority over being first, best or right and prioritise the partnership over the perfect wedding. Choose your battles carefully- which ones to fight and which ones to let go. Be considerate of each other's feeling and opinions. Honour that which is important to your partner even if it doesn't make sense to you What is the most common problem the couples who come to see you face? Disconnection. Mostly couples become disconnected when there are unfulfilled expectations regarding roles and responsibilities, cohabitation ideals, financial management, sexuality, parenting styles, spiritual beliefs, lifestyle choices and extended family relationships. How do you balance your thriving career with love and family? I am privileged to be able to work my own hours, which affords me the opportunity to be available for my son most afternoons and with my family on weekends. I also have a wonderful support structure in place.

BOOK REVIEWS

Jurassic World. Genre: Adventure Staring: Chris Pratt Running time: 124 IMDB Rating : 7.4

22 years after the original Jurassic Park failed, the new park (also known as Jurassic World) is open for business. After years of studying genetics the scientists on the park genetically engineer a new breed of dinosaur. When everything goes horribly wrong, will our heroes make it off the island? Jurassic World has been running with great success for more than a decade in the wake of the disaster that haunted the island 22 years ago. The park's geneticists have once again broken scientific and ethical boundaries in order to raise attendance for the park, now experiencing a decline in happy customers. Convinced that the new attraction will bring in many more people, but having crossed the line once again, the results may be devastating.

Love may fail By: Matthew Quick R308 Another brilliant novel by the author of Silver Linings Playbook. The lead character Portia Kane has a meltdown after discovering her pornographer husband in bed with another woman. She takes stock of her life and doesn't like what she sees. The allure of money and financial security has caused her to discard her own dream of one day being a writer. She moves back to the unhappy place of her childhoodSouth Jersey. Lost and alone she sets off on a mission to save the one man who always believed in her - her beloved high school English teacher, Mr. Vernon. Unfortunately it is not as easy as it seems as Mr Vernon has himself had a breakdown and retired. There are some very quirky, colourful characters you will thoroughly enjoy like a brazen nun, an ex-heroin addict “heartthrob, a metalhead little boy and a mentally disturbed hoarder. Will Portia's hope in the human race be restored? This is an inspiring story of the heartache and bravery it takes to become who you are destined to be. I laughed, I cried, I loved it. 10/10

A year of Marvellous Ways By: Sarah Winman

R308

The main character Marvellous Ways, is a 90 year-old woman who lives alone in a remote Cornish creek. She spends her days sitting on the steps of her caravan with a pair of binoculars, waiting for something - she's not sure what. The other lead is Freddy Drake-a young soldier who was left emotionally scarred from the atrocities he experienced during the war. He agreed to fulfil a dying friend's last wish to deliver a letter to the boy's father in Cornwall. He washes up in Marvellous' creek, a broken man. He forms an unlikely friendship with Marvellous Ways. I found this book a little too abstract and lyrical. Whilst some of the writing was truly poetic and beautiful; I often struggled to make sense of it all. However, I like the way it all came together in the end. Perfect for readers who like to really think and not for those looking for an easy read. Whimsical with a touch of magic. 7/10
