The Winter solstice is behind us and we’re on our way to longer days and shorter nights. According to ‘Forever Conscious’ there’s a spiritual side to the Winter solstice too. It ‘…celebrates the…rebirth of the sun and is believed to hold a powerful energy for regeneration, reflection and renewal.’ A time to take stock and reflect always gets a strong yes from me. As a sort of midway point of the year it’s certainly useful to see if we’ve made any strides towards reaching our goals. Certainly, I tend to spend a lot of time in the ‘engine room,’ peddling to get through my daily tasks in both a business and personal capacity. But when we’re too focused on the never ending ‘to-do-list’, we often lose sight of our strategic goals. After all, it’s important that someone is steering the ship. Sometimes you can be the person who steers as well as the person chucking coal into the engine. Or maybe you’ve found a partner in business and/ or life who takes the opposing position? But for those who attempt to do both, I admire you tremendously, even if I don’t envy you. Whatever your viewpoint, I read something recently that resonated with me: ‘We don’t have to agree on anything to be kind to one another,’ and I think the world could use a lot more of that.

CARISHMA BASDAY: ON DREAMING BIG! By Danni Martin

She’s a local TV presenter and actress, dancer, model and yoga guru who recently starred in the acclaimed movie ‘Deep End’. This formidable woman is not scared to challenge norms and champion women’s rights. She’s shooting the lights out with her charisma, light-filled attitude and grounded philosophy and is going places fast. How did you first get into acting? My mom enrolled me in ballet classes when I was about 4 years old and that’s where my love for performing began. I was blessed to have incredible teachers along the way who really encouraged my passion and that led me to a degree in performing arts. I then moved to Cape Town to study acting in film for a year at Act Cape Town and during that year I signed with my agent, went to my first audition and booked the job. I’ve never looked back. Your latest movie is about a young women’s battle to carve her own path and challenge social norms. Did you draw from any personal experiences to perform this role? Yes. My whole life has been about challenging social norms. Growing up in a small town on the south coast of KZN, wanting to become an actress was pretty radical. I have always marched to the beat of my own drum. I was the outsider because of all the ‘out of the box’ things I did like free diving, rock climbing, swimming with sharks, marrying a man from a different race and culture, pursuing a career in the arts. Things are slowly changing, and I want to be a part of that change. I want to show Indian girls, actually all girls, that you can be whatever you want to be. What is your best advice to young women growing up in our society today? Stay true to yourself. Do the work to really know and understand who you are and what you want and then be fearless in pursuit of what sets your

soul on fire. At the end of the day our power lies in our uniqueness and we should always fight to honour that. What kind of prep work did you do to get fit for this role? I wanted to portray a strong body in this movie and not just a thin/lean one. I enjoy short intense workouts that have me in and out of the gym feeling strong and accomplished. I did a lot of high intensity strength training using weights and my own body weight, 4-5 times a week. Yoga almost everyday. Bodytec EMS training which is brilliant, and I usually eat a pretty clean, low carb nutritionally dense diet. Now that we’re half way through the year, what is still on your list to achieve? I’m shooting for an exciting Netflix project, I have a big movie coming up in September, lots of shooting for Mela on Sabc 3, I’m exciting to get back to teaching as an acting coach at Act Cape Town later in the year, I have some yoga training in Bali at the end of the year and I am working on writing my own screenplay. Season will kick in again around September and who knows what exciting projects that will bring my way. What do you love most about living in Hout Bay? I was so skeptical when we moved to Hout Bay about 7 years ago, but I can honestly say that I cannot imagine living anywhere else. I love the community in Hout Bay.

Barry Berman founded Mekaish Group 24 years ago introducing a marketplace for low digit and unusual CA number plates to car enthusiasts and collectors alike throughout Cape Town. He is a prominent and well-known figure in the automotive industry throughout SA since introducing personalised number plates, thereby giving motorists the ultimate choice in expressing themselves, marketing a brand or just having fun. Approximately 12 years ago he set his sights on the fragmented traffic fine industry and Mekaish Traffic Fine Management is now the market leading business in assisting motorists and fleets in receiving their national fine status report, receiving a discount, paying of

fines, and finally issuing receipts. No fees are charged so the consumer saves making it perfect sense to be on the Mekaish platform. Berman states, “Managing fleet traffic fines has resulted in a visible change in behavior of drivers who are penalized timeously for traffic infringements. This saves lives on our roads and safer driving protects our client’s fleets from accidents and damage.” Motorists who don’t pay their fines are now finding it impossible to renew their license discs as Municipalities are blocking these ID numbers. This may result in further fines for expired licenses as well as insurance companies not honoring a claim if the license disc has lapsed.

INVESTING OFFSHORE Rand volatility and political uncertainty are always two good reasons why people become nervous and want to take their money out of the country. We’ve certainly had much of both. But offshore diversification involves many things. To put it into perspective, Samantha Bowen, Executive Director and leading wealth management specialist at Carrick Wealth, tells us more. Factors to consider When determining the right mix between local and offshore, many factors need to be considered, including long-term goals, types of investments to be considered, time periods and risk appetite. Not forgetting the regulatory requirements of foreign jurisdictions. As these are all my areas of expertise, I would conduct a complete complimentary analysis of your current financial situation - from your current Will, to your offshore banking and your offshore portfolio.

As an experienced financial adviser to highnet-worth individuals for the last eleven years, my advice is always that everybody should be diversified offshore, but as an integral part of one’s long-term strategy. A portion – approximately 20-40% - of one’s wealth should be invested outside the country. Since I arrived here in 2008 my client base has changed from mostly expats to more than 50% now being South Africans, many who are considering investing offshore for the first time.

ment when local conditions deteriorate. If you have thought about investing offshore but need to know more, or wish to review and update your portfolio, please contact me at sam.bowen@ carrick-wealth.com. Disclaimer: These are the author’s personal and generalised views and should not be construed as professional advice as all individuals’ circumstances differ.

Diversifying is not only a choice between jurisdictions and tax efficiency, but will also include deciding on different asset classes, hard currencies, industries, or investing in an international pension. One of the key areas I assist clients with, which is often overlooked, is the structure your investment is held in - this is vital to realising the full potential of your international investment.

Compelling reasons With the South African market representing less than 1% of global stock market capitalisation, investing offshore will give you access to the other 99%. Also consider that the rand (ZAR) has depreciated on average by over 5% each year since 1971. If you compare the return on a ZAR-plus-inflation investment to its equivalent in US dollars (USD), since 2011, the ZAR investment has underperformed by 36.26% over this period. A 6% return in ZAR, for example, is not equivalent to 6% in USD. It would require ZAR inflation plus 10.5% in order to match a return of US CPI +6.5%. Those numbers are quite shocking but unfortunately it is the reality we must face.

Get professional advice The options are many and varied, each with their own unique requirements, so professional advice will be invaluable. Once my client, I conduct a quarterly revision of your circumstances and portfolio which will allow you to adjust accordingly and to comfortably bolster your offshore invest-

EMERGENCY BACK PAIN

By Dr Guy Ashburner, Osteopath

“Osteopathic manipulative treatment reduced pain and improved function in patients suffering from chronic, nonspecific low back pain, research shows. Further, patients reporting the worst pain and higher degrees of disability received the most substantial benefit from the treatments” - Journal of the American Osteopathic Association, February 2016

Back pain can be debilitating. Patients suffering from severe back pain often have trouble walking or even standing up. Lower back pain may be sharp or dull and may be severe enough to limit everyday activities. Pain may worsen with certain activities (such as sports with poor technique) or physical positions (such as sitting for long periods with poor posture) and may be relieved by rest. Irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve from your spine can cause pain and numbness or tingling in your leg and can limit your ability to sit, drive, walk, or go to work. Causes of back pain include accidents, muscle strains, sports injuries, poor posture, stress and mechanical problems involving the spine, infections and serious pathology.

When a back problem first occurs, it’s a good idea to first consult with an osteopath or doctor and make sure you are doing the right things for your back. If possible have someone else drive you for immediate assessment and treatment. You should consider seeking medical attention: If you develop a sudden onset of extreme low back pain or sciatica, if pain is severe even after taking medication and getting rest; if the pain follows a fall, car accident, sports injury; if you have numbness, tingling in your arms or your legs; if the pain is made worse by coughing or bending forward or backward at the waist; the pain extends downward along the back of the leg. An osteopath will take a thorough medical history followed by an orthopaedic, neurological, and osteopathic examination leading to a diagnosis. The osteopath may refer for further investigations or other specialists as clinically appropriate. Early diagnosis is vital in achieving a speedy recovery. Osteopathic treatment for lower back pain depends upon the patient’s history and the type and severity of pain. Osteopaths will use techniques such as subtle joint articulation and adjustments, myofascial release, massage and cranial osteopathy which aim to help decrease pain, improve

joint mobility, decrease muscle spasm, improve tissue circulation and lymphatic drainage which may reduce inflammation and aids recovery of nerves, muscles, ligaments and joints. The osteopath will explain how bad posture and spinal wear and tear have contributed to your pain. You may be given specific exercises to do at home and other advice regarding ice and heat as well as advice on ergonomics in you work place and better posture. Much lower back pain can be managed conservatively without the need for surgery, and understanding its cause often is the key to avoiding re-injury. If pain persists or worsens, more involved diagnostic and surgical procedures may be recommended. If you experience any of the following symptoms in conjunction with back pains, or as a result of severe trauma visit the nearest emergency room immediately. 1. Progressive leg weakness and/or loss of bladder or bowel sensation/control. 2. Unexplained weight loss, loss of appetite, pain and neurological problems. 3. Severe, continuous abdominal and lower back pain. 4. Sustained fever and increased pain. These symptoms could be a sign of a serious problem that requires medical attention right away.

FIRE PREVENTION AT HOME The biggest threat during the winter months is household fires which are mostly started accidentally by people being careless with open flames. Charnel Hattingh, National Marketing & Communications Manager of Fidelity ADT, says it’s a critical time of the year for education around fire safety. “Every year we get called out to many fire incidents during the winter months. Besides the obvious threat of losing their lives, people can lose their homes and possessions in a matter of minutes when a fire breaks out,” she says. She adds that when officers respond to the scene of a fire, more often than not there are no smoke detectors or fire extinguishers at the premises. While there seems to be a shift towards greater fire prevention measures being put in place in homes and businesses, more still needs to be done. “Installing smoke alarms isn’t common practice in South Africa - but it should be. Linked to an armed response service, you’ll have peace of mind that help is on its way in the event of a fire emergency, when every second counts,” she says. One of the most common causes of residential fires are indoor or outdoor fireplaces. Thatch lapas are especially vulnerable. Other causes of household fires include worn out electrical wires and appliances, burning candles, heaters, electric blankets, children playing with matches, gas leaks and burning oil left unattended on a stove. “We are entering a high danger period for fires especially because of the high chance of power outages and drier and more static air. From June to the end of August, more fires are reported annually than during any other period in the year,” warns Hattingh.

18

FIDELITY ADT’S DO’S & DON’TS : DO • • • •

Install smoke alarms and have them linked to your alarm system Buy at least one fire extinguisher for your home Know your emergency numbers and what to do in an emergency Check electrical cables for faults and take note of warnings on electrical appliances • Keep low when exiting a smoke-filled room and cover your nose and mouth with a damp cloth • Work out an emergency fire drill with your family

DON’T • • • • • •

Leave a burning candle, heater, pot of oil or fire unattended – ever! Pack up your personal belongings before getting to safety Try to put an oil fire out with water Open a door which is hot to the touch Go back into the house if you’ve made it outside safely Go into a room that is on fire

“Fire safety is complex but there are certain basic concepts that help prevent the start and spread of fires. Fires can be deadly and devastating. We encourage everyone to spend a bit of time thinking about fire prevention and taking steps to ensure their loved ones are protected,” concludes Hattingh. Issued on behalf of Fidelity ADT

TRELLIDOR SECURITY: SUBTLE FOR STYLISH KITCHENS “Subtle” is not a descriptor usually associted with security products. And security barriers are not usually ‘must have’ items on the shopping list for new kitchen accessories. “Knowing this, we introduced designs that are both understated and protective, providing designers with door and window solutions that add value to the scheme rather than detract from it,” says Kevin Bonner, Trellidor RSA Sales and Marketing Manager.

Trellidor Clear Guard sliding units in charcoal The first of these is Trellidor Clear Guard, a stainless steel mesh screen with an aluminium frame. The units are custom-made to fit the opening and can be engineered in any configuration including sliding, sash, bi-fold, casement, awning, French doors and windows, hinged doors and fixed panels. Colour Trends The Trellidor Clear Guard frames can be powder coated in a wide range of colours so that they can blend in with window and door frame colours. “White is still the most popular choice, but we are seeing a strong shift towards charcoal and black. Bronze and brown are preferred for game lodges and country hotels as they fit into the safari “bush” theme that attracts visitors, especially those from other countries” Health Hazards Hospitality establishments have another compelling reason for installing Trellidor Clear Guard in their kitchens and public areas. The mesh screen blocks out flies, mosquitoes, birds, and other health hazards. “Homes built in areas where these pests occur also benefit from the screen’s ability to prevent anything from insects to snakes and monkeys from getting inside,” says Bonner.

Trellidor Security Shutter bi-fold doors

22

Fitted to kitchen windows and doors, the screens are totally unobtrusive, seethrough and provide a high level of protection against intruders. Pretty strong louvres Trellidor Security Shutter is, at first glance, just another louvre shutter similar to any of the many versions on the market. They are an attractive companion to doors and windows, replacing curtains and blinds in one sleek product. They can be used as room dividers, patio doors and privacy screens and are especially attractive in the kitchen of any style. Trellidor, however has taken louvre screens to another level by adding internal strengthening features and fitting units with a patented Trellidor locking system. Locked shutters provide security even when the louvres are tilted open for fresh air and light. Corrosion resistance The Trellidor powder coating system for both these products includes a pre-treatment process that enhances UV and corrosion resistance. The powder coating is ideal for coastal and inland conditions because it increases the lifespan of the barrier by retaining its quality finish.

Trellidor Clear Guard is ideal for bush lodges

START YOUR CHILD ON THE CODING PATH, EVEN IF THEIR SCHOOL ISN’T THERE YET There is a lot of talk in South Africa about the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) and the need for education in the country to start preparing learners for the future world of work from a young age. Unfortunately in South Africa, resources are often lacking and many teachers are not yet equipped to teach coding. However this shouldn’t stop parents from encouraging their children to start with the basics of coding from a young age, an expert says. “As we teach our children to read and speak our mother tongue language so we should start with coding at an early age,” says John Luis, Head of Academics at ADvTECH Schools. “Parents who are not tech savvy may find this daunting, so the easiest way to start the children off will be to download some apps to their mobile devices which will use games to kick off the coding thought processes. Learning to code is like learning how to speak, read and write in a different language. Children are very good at learning a variety of languages from a young age so teaching them coding will be no different,” he says. “Technology changes rapidly and our children must be able to adapt, be agile minded and most importantly prepared for the future working world. The 4IR should not be dismissed as a buzzword – it is real. “This means that in the future world of work, coding will be a fundamental digital skill which our children will need to be literate in much the same way we prepare our children with language, numeracy and physical skills. Coding is no longer a skill reserved for scientists, engineers and IT geeks.”

Luis explains that the fourth industrial revolution i s characterised by a rapidly developing technological environment in which disruptive technologies, the Internet of Things, virtual and augmented reality, robotics and artificial intelligence are changing the way we exercise, play, study, live and work. Internationally coding has long been recognised as a future life skill and is offered as part of the normal primary school curriculum. In South Africa, high schools have had the subject from Grade 10 to 12 as a subject choice (Information Technology) for many years, but it was mostly offered to select learners based on their mathematics marks. Still, only a small percentage of schools have been able to offer the subject as it requires dedicated infrastructure and highly competent teachers. The situation looks better at progressive private schools, where coding has been introduced as part of the mainstream offering. “And where parents do not yet have the option of enrolling their child in a school that incorporates coding as part of the mainstream offering, they should ensure that their child isn’t left behind, by assisting them independently,” says Luis.

Parents can start by helping their child download some of the various free mobile applications and software (listed below) which help young children to start coding, he says. * Scratch (https://scratch.mit.edu/educators) is a very effective free coding language that is designed specifically for ages 8 to 16 but can be used by people of all ages. * Alice (https://www.alice.org/) is a block-based programming environment that makes it easy to create animations, build interactive narratives, or program simple games in 3D. *Microsoft Minecraft Education an educational version of Minecraft, the game popular with children all over the world. (https://education.minecraft. net/) . * Roblox (https://developer.roblox.com/resources/ education/Resources) caters for children from the ages of 8 to 14.
