With school holidays right at the start of the month we've included lots of options to keep everyone entertained. Whether you celebrate Easter or not it's still a wonderful holiday. For everyone it means an extra few days off which equates to more time for the things we love and for relaxing with our family and friends. There are so many public holidays this month- it's hard to think how we'll manage to fit in any work. (Although I suppose there are worse things to contemplate.) With all the Easter eggs we are sure to consume we've also included a feature on how to keep your body fit and toned; a feat which our local and enigmatic cover girl- Liezel Van Der Westhuizen- has perfected. March was a harrowing and action packed month with the devastating fires which raged throughout the Cape. I think everyone was deeply affected whether they were directly in the line of fire or not. It was remarkable how everyone pulled together as a community and joined forces to help others. I'm sure I speak on behalf of us all when I say a big thank you to our local heroes –our fire fighters and volunteers- for the dedication and the many long hours of hard work they put in. We salute you and are deeply indebted. In the same spirit of human kindness our article on page 27 introduces us to GIVA. It's is a whole new way of giving; which enable us - with a simple touch of our thumbs - to help change lives. What's not to love? Happy Easter everyone.

TRAVEL This past month I was fortunate to spend a weekend At The Beach. As the name suggests, this beautiful beach house is situated right on the water's edge of the 5km long stretch of unspoilt beach front; along the prestigious Golden Mile in St. Britannia Bay.

Right on the Water's Edge By: Danni Thunell Ende rugs and the owner's personal collection of art pieces. What's more- the furnishing emphasizes the comfort factor and is designed for low maintenance, easy living. The house offers ample accommodation with two bedrooms in the main house as well as two twin guest rooms in the adjacent annexe. The main house offers large open space living and dining areas with underfloor heating, as well as a fully fitted kitchen with all the utilities needed to enjoy an evening cooking with friends.

After a long and harrowing work week this home was the ideal getaway to unwind and recharge our batteries. (The fact that we got there in less than two hours was an unexpected bonus.) We literally spent our time there relaxing on the deck soaking in the view and watching the waves roll in, taking sporadic dips in the plunge pool, stretching out on the lawn with a G&T, tanning, braaing, playing card and dice games and lazing in bed with a good book. What more could you ask for? (For those more adventurous we did witness a few brave guys kayaking past us.) The house, designed by esteemed architect -Johan du Toit- is tastefully decorated with muted earthy tones, hand-made fibre design African

GREAT FISH & CHIPS, PRAWNS & CALAMARI, IN THE BAY... Serving until +-8.30pm - 365 days a year

My best feature was the master sunken bath where all the sliding doors open and you literally feel as if you're taking a bath on the deck with an unrestricted view of the ocean and the sound of waves breaking. The area is renowned for its picturesque fishing villages such as Paternoster and Jacobsbaai 15 minutes drive away-with Shelly Point just next door- in case your weekend plans include a round of golf or a visit to the spa. We were lucky enough to view a pod of dolphins frolicking in the waves from our veranda before (very reluctantly) packing our bags to leave on Sunday.

Liezel Van Der Westhuizen follows her dreams!

By: Danni Thunell Ende

What made you decide to get into the industry? The industry found me...As a student I worked as an In Store announcer and one of the managers of a regional radio station offered me a job and my television work spiralled out of my radio work. This has also helped with my video blog: www.giraffeinthecity.com What did you actually study? I hold both an Honours and a Masters Degree in Communication Business Management and a Degree in Human resources Management.

This month we met up with the bubbly and charismatic, Liezel Van Der Westhuizen, when she popped into our offices for a visit. She's a big household name after her stint on MNET Idols and it's hard to believe that only a few years ago she was “discovered” by Jacaranda FM after the programme manager heard her working as an announcer at Makro. Never one to let an opportunity pass her by; she believes in passionately following your dreams and as a result her career has sky rocketed.

Ironman triathlon (which comprises of a 3.8km swim, a 180km cycle and a 42.2km run) and also placing third in the Miss Fitness Pageant last year. Do you have any advice for others trying to break into your industry? Never listen to the naysayers, follow your dreams, work hard and don't ever give up. Tell us something about yourself no one else may know? I rescued a pet hedgehog from a neighbour whose child didn't want it anymore. No one knows I have a pet hedgehog named Benji

Who or what inspires you to pursue your dreams? I have an amazingly supportive family who encourages all my creative and sporting challenges. I love tackling new things and pushing my boundaries as well as challenging myself

How do you stay in such great shape? I work with an incredible trainer- Aubreyat the Concept Studio- a high altitude cycling centre in Sea Point. I also run and swim twice a week which helps me stay in shape.

What is your proudest achievement? My proudest career moment is definitely being only the second woman in the world to present Idols. My proudest sporting achievement is finishing the tough

Complete the sentence- “My ideal day out in Cape Town would be ...an adventurous day spent hiking up Table Mountain, Stand Up Paddle boarding in Hout Bay and Mountain Biking in Tokai.

The Cape planting season has begun!! It's April and the Cape is alive. The sun is retreating and now it's cooling down sufficiently for evening watering to have real effect. Autumn is the season when the Cape floral kingdom wakes up. So this is the best time of year to start planting indigenous plants. A lot of these plants have their peak flowering time in the spring and early summer to come. Duvernoia If you are after late summer, autumn and early winter colour then consider the indigenous 'Duvernoia adhatodoides' for shady areas (see insert picture). This handsome upright shrub can grow to a height of two meters. It has generously large glossy leaves and produces funky bright white flowers always useful in low light areas. Duvernoia is also water-wise.

Planting Season: Take the opportunity to take stock of the garden now. Those plants that have survived the hot windy summer unscathed are the best suited plants

for your garden. Those that have withered and declined should be pulled out and replaced with new plants species that are more in nature like the survivors. To find out which plants like similar conditions and requirements you need to speak to your local landscapers and horticulturalists at the garden centres. The water-wise gardens that don't need watering in the summer are designed to endure during the dry months. The summer is a dormant time for gardening here. However the next five months are critical in such gardens as this is the time to start planting in the Cape.

Lawn Care

duvernoia - adhatodoides

Lawns: If you have weeds it's because the lawns are being cut too low. To avoid this situation don't mow for a week so that it can grow back. Then raise the lawn mower so that it only cuts the very extreme tips. You need the thatch to thicken sufficiently to prevent sunshine getting through to the soil level below. Weed seed is carried under shoes, on animals and it also blows in on the wind. These seeds will not be able to germinate so easily if the lawn thatch is thick. Aim for a thatch thickness of up to five to seven centimetres, or the full length from knuckle to fingertip. This is the ideal. Buffalo and Berea lawns are entering their dormant season. They now grow at a slower pace. Soit would be prudent to skip a week in the mowing program.

This might sound rather far fetched but in my opinion it is has already started. Eventually the earth will not be able to sustain the number of people on it. In the near future around the American Midwest, Cooper an ex-science engineer and pilot, is tied to his farming land with his daughter Murph and son Tom. As devastating sandstorms ravage earths crops, the people of Earth realize their life here is coming to an end as food begins to run out. Eventually stumbling upon a NASA base near Cooper's home, he is asked to go on a daring mission with a few other scientists into a wormhole because of Cooper's scientific intellect and ability to pilot aircraft unlike the other crew members. In order to find a new home while Earth decays, Cooper must decide to either stay, or risk never seeing his children again in order to save the human race by finding another habitable planet.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

GIVA, a live innovation helping lives. By: Danni Thunell Ende

In a nutshell what is the chief objective of GIVA? GIVA allows you to find a person you want to help, give to their specific need and see how it impacts their life. What was the inspiration behind launching GIVA? The creation of GIVA initially emerged from the City of Cape Town's 'Give Responsibly' campaign – which encouraged the public to refrain from giving irresponsibly on the street, instead channeling the desire to give via a SMS short code or direct EFT to participating charity organizations. While the 'give responsibly' message was strong, there was an opportunity to innovate the mechanism so that it better utilized mobile phone and payment technologies, impulsive giving, realtime relevance and digitally enabled connectivity to transparency and feedback. How is this different to other charitable platforms? We believe that people need to see and experience directly where their money is going; if it's making a tangible impact and how giving translates into people helped and change effected. Many people outside social development sectors are not interested in

systemic change structures, institutions and organizations; but rather in the people they help directly with real on-the-ground issues. With GIVA you are able to see that person who is already connected to a legitimate organization; read about who they are and how your give will impact their life (and their family/community around them). To keep to our promise of transparency; a trained point person within the registered and vetted NPO (ie. Program manager, social worker) broadcasts and facilitates the need on behalf of the featured individuals. Furthermore, the individuals never receive the money directly but rather receive the benefit or result of the money (i.e. a training course, building supplies or clothing). All financial transactions are vetted and verified by The Community Chest. Whenever possible, photographic evidence is sent onward to all GIVAS that supported a specific need. How did GIVA come to be in existence? The Safety Lab conducted a competitive review of donor giving mechanisms and websites. Through this process, open territory in the market place to innovate with 'one-to-one giving' was apparent. Along with Y&R and Native – a leading digital interactive,

design firm – a beta version of the GIVA platform was built to proof the concept and trial the experiences of end users and NPOs. A real simulation of the GIVA beta platform occurred in August 2013 and the response from the focus group was resoundingly positive. Development of the live version of GIVA started in 2014 with Information Logistics – agile software developers with a keen interest in the social start-up sector. In your opinion has GIVA been a success? A resounding success! Since the formation of the one of a kind partnership between Community Chest, Y&R and the Safety Lab – the GIVA platform has been rolled out to reach over 30+ NPOs to date and channeled over R100k+ in micro-gifts in 6 months, helping dozens of individuals already with purposeful needs. “As for what GIVA delivers, we're not promising to change the world and lives per say,” says their project manager-Helene Underhay, “rather, we're enabling you to give a purpose-full helping hand at the point where it's needed most.
