It's officially winter and waking up is that much harder when it's completely dark outside. Bring on the 21st of June when the winter solstice ensures we start moving towards more daylight hours again. We're also looming towards the mid-year school exams and it's a stressful time for those with children. My take on it is that the rest of their lives are a 'test' so let's try not put them under too much pressure just yet. One of our central themes this month is that of fatherhood. The roles of fathers in society has changed so much in the past few decades with many men assuming more and more of the household and family duties. They really need to get credit for stepping up to the plate. We interviewed many inspiring and entrepreneurial dads; to find out how they juggle work with fatherhood. A father is such an important role in a child's life it cannot be underestimated. However, in today's modern times a father can mean a step dad, an uncle or a close male friend of the family. I salute anyone who is willing to step into the gap of male mentor. Don't let the freezing weather stop you from enjoying everything the Mother City has to offer. With the summer drought driving food prices sky high it's almost cheaper and certainly less effort to eat out. We've given you loads of winter restaurant specials to consider as well as some amazing events to keep everyone in the family entertained. I am dying to try Christmas in winter in Tulbagh. Happy Father's Day and stay warm and dry!

What inspired you to start your own business FEAR! Creating employment for myself & other families and being able to feed people How do you balance fatherhood with entrepreneurship? A great team and a great partner make that easy What's your favourite way to unwind? Tinkering on engines, cars, bikes and aeroplanes – (a closet mechanic!) Has fatherhood made you a more cautious entrepreneur? No – I take more risks and I plan further ahead. Do you think it's easier as a father being your own boss? Yes. I can work around the children wherever possible. Do you come from an entrepreneurial family? Yes, my grandfather was the first guy to bring Harley Davidson to the (Orange) Free State and the first to bring heavy articulated lorries to SA in 1939. His motto was : We never sleep! My Dad, all his brothers, and my brother as well, are self-employed. What top 3 qualities make for a good entrepreneur? Vision, resilience and bounce-back-ability (!)

What inspired you to start your own business? When I was 28 the company that I worked for was acquired by a bigger corporate entity, the idea of working at their headquarters did not appeal to me so I approached the shareholders and did a deal with them to purchase myself out of their business. This enabled me to ethically carry on what I was already doing, but only now for myself. The family also took the opportunity to relocate to Hout Bay – the best decision that we have ever made. How do you balance the responsibilities of fatherhood with the passion of entrepreneurship? In the beginning it was really tough, young children, a new business, a new city. Things have now settled down but at the end of the day, my wife Lynne has really been the driving force behind the family, we could not have done it without her.

Your favourite way to unwind & leave work behind? Running with the dogs in the forest is medicine for the soul. Also love sinking a few beers with mates at any of the many options that are available in Hout Bay. I love the sense of community here. Has fatherhood made you a more cautious entrepreneur? No I don't think so. I think you take risks when you are young, because you've got time on your side. Obviously as you get older the decisions you make are less risky as you have the benefit of experience and knowledge. Do you think it's easier as a father being your own boss? Being your own boss is easy, you take full responsibility for the decisions that you make, even if they are wrong. Fathers might like to think that they play a role in the decision making process but with a wife and teenagers that's really just not the case. Do you have any advice for aspiring entrepreneurs? In a word “tenacity”. I think too many new business owners throw in the towel too soon. Every business has gone through some rough seas. Stick to your guns, the calm waters will return. Do you come from an entrepreneurial family? Yes I do. All of the bread winners in our family work for themselves – have never thought about that before. Are entrepreneurs born or made? I think everyone has a degree of entrepreneurial spirit within themselves – it's really just what they do with it. I think people mistakenly think that successful

entrepreneurs are the guys with good ideas – what makes a business successful is how you action any idea, it’s all about what you do with an idea. What lesson would you like to teach your children about business? Buy low and sell high. What is your business mission statement? We actually don't have one. But the statement that we survive by is; “Adapt or die”. You have to keep on reinventing yourself, as the commercial landscape constantly changes. Apple went into phones and then music. Nokia died. What do you attribute to your success as an entrepreneur? Timing, luck, action, a loving wife, good energetic people, hard work. What top 3 qualities make for a good entrepreneur? Action, structure, positive energy

pavements in New York and LA as a hobby, then watch people light up as they read them on their way to work. As I faced dissatisfaction in my other careers my quantum leap came when I went on a journey to find out what makes my soul smile and flipped the equation. Unless I had gone through that- I wouldn't have realised the deeper gifts. It also gives me a profound platform to speak from when I share my message - and teach people to build their goals & dreams around what they love. What motto do you live by? Love is the ultimate success. If you drop the pony show - Falling in love is an act of the soul, not your Blue eyes, cool shirt, career, car, ducks in a row! Get comfortable with being vulnerable and you will attract LOVE! How do you balance fatherhood with a career? There is nothing more important to me than being the best Dad I can be which addresses every question that can arise in terms of priority.

Brett Shuttleworth - A model father & motivational man By: Danni Thunell Ende How did you get into modeling and acting? By accident literally. I broke my arm in 27 places playing rugby in the USA. During my recovery I got approached by a world-famous photographer to model. It changed my life forever. It also taught me one of life's greatest lessons: Never underestimate the power of denial. Where the scar forms is where the gold dust is. The insight you get into your own ego is priceless at that level. What has been the highlight of your career? I loved being a professional sportsman. You Only Get What You Give by Romy Tarboton

“To care for those who once cared for us is one of the highest honours. An unsolicited email arrived in our Signature inbox last week that really gave us food for thought and pulled at our heart strings. It was from a lady called Marilyn asking for assistance in finding a suitable rental home that could be shared by a group of retired people who can no longer afford to rent on their own. It went on to say that 'there must be so many people out there in the same circumstances who are finding it difficult to afford to live in institutions. Not only are they expensive but the resident has a tiny room with a basin and from our experience has lost the will to live and socialise.' Signature had been in discussions for quite some time around our

desire to get involved in a community upliftment project, and decided that this was something we were truly passionate about and really played to our strengths. An idea has since emerged and we would like to take this opportunity to share it with the public and humbly ask for your support. Our vision is to set up communal living private residences in any of the areas we specialise in, but since our head offices are located in Upper Constantia our first focus will be the Southern Suburbs. The idea of communal living among the aged is not entirely new, and research has shown that it is really taking off in the USA, Hong Kong and Europe.

Geared predominantly to over 50's (or people with physical disabilities), we are appealing to home owners in the Southern Suburbs to consider putting your residence forward for the good of the community. We in no way expect this to be an entirely charitable venture, and we would expect each resident to contri-bute towards rental payments, but the idea would be that everyone can bring their unique talents into the house, make it a home and bring some of the joy back to their lives. We envisage that the people in the household would share their meals and activities, as well as expenses. The cost of rent, utilities and food is divided between all members and perhaps a health caregiver is hired by the group to help with the heavy housework, laundry, trans-portation needs and general daily cares that the elderly residents may need. The benefits of communal living are vast. Socially the elderly enjoy living in a family-like setting and this can really address issues of loneliness and boredom, which can lead to depression and health concerns. Instead of being in an institution they are surrounded by people who care like a family. The residents remain independent and socially active in the community rather than being isolated to only mature adult interaction, as with most senior institutional communities. Being able to participate in collaborative community management, and building up mutually supportive systems according to people's different needs. THE METHOD THE FORGETTING TIME By Sharon Guskin R318

Life is extremely difficult for single mom Janie whose son Noah is different to other children his age. He refuses to bath for example as he hates water and he keeps asking his mom when he can 'go home.' Desperate to find out what's wrong with Noah and after umpteen sessions with top child specialists; she is no closer to an answer. A chance reading of an article online leads her to Dr Jerome Anderson who changes their lives forever. Dr Anderson is a leading psychologist who has spent his entire career trying to prove reincarnation exists. This is a riveting and profound novel that pushes the boundaries and is a testament to the unbreakable bond between a mother and her child. Fans of Jodi Picoult will love it. 9/10

By Shannon Kirk R368 One of the best psychological thrillers I have read this year and completely different from anything else. The premise is this: what if the victim is smarter and more conniving than the perpetrator of the crime? Pregnant, sixteen-year -old Lisa is kidnapped a few yards from her home and shoved into the back of a dirty van. She is taken for her unborn baby whom the kidnappers intend to sell on the black market once delivered and murder her thereafter. From the time she is kidnapped she is methodical and calculating and feels a sudden and overwhelming desire to exact revenge and save her unborn baby. Ridiculously clever you can only but read on in awe at the ingenious way she plots her revenge. With the most bad ass crime heroine I have come across- this is one book you absolutely HAVE to read. 10/10

THE NARROW BED By Sophie Hannah R368

A serial killer is going around murdering pairs of best friends. Everyone who has been murdered has received a little white book with a quote inside, shortly before being killed. Comedian Kim Tribbbeck received one of those at a gig she performed a year ago. When she discovers that is the link between the crimes on the news channel she fears she will be the next victim. The only puzzling thing is that she doesn't really have any friends and she is still alive. For five months the police have been trying to catch the killer dubbed Billy Dead Mates but they've been failing dismally. A very good and saucy, murder mystery with a hilariously dry and witty lead character that will have you chuckling throughout. 8/10
