Women really are taking over the world- as evidenced by the many inspirational, entrepreneurial women we interviewed, who’ve someone managed to find that elusive work/ life balance and share the secrets of their success with us. Our cover star, better known as Suzelle DIY, is truly the poster women for empowerment and embodies everything we admire in women today. The general consensus when asked what the greatest challenge facing women in the workplace was, was: “burnout.” We set such high expectations for ourselves, putting unnecessary pressure on an already full life. Let’s be gentle with ourselves and others this month. Let’s share our stories, encourage our village of women to keep reaching for their dreams, re inventing themselves and empowering one another. Together, we can do it. Happy Women’s day.

SUZELLE DIY: ANYBODY CAN! We were so excited to catch up with Julia Anastasopoulos, the women behind the brand Suzelle DIY. When we realised we needed an inspirational, entrepreneurial woman- there was not better choice. How did your character Suzelle DIY come to life? Suzelle DIY started in 2014, when my boyfriend Ari (now husband) and I decided to combine our creative skills and make a film. We realised that it was going to take too long to make the movie, so we decided to do something immediate using the resources that we had available. We turned to YouTube and started making DIY episodes, we wanted to parody the weird and unusual people you find online. The episodes quickly gained traction and our audience began to grow and the rest is history! DIY is typically considered a “man- arena”, are you hoping to change that? Yes I am! Suzelle’s philosophy is ANYBODY CAN! What do you love most about being Suzelle? The creativity, making things and bringing laughter to people. Tell us your greatest “Suzelle” DIY success & disaster. The greatest success has been being able to earn a living from Suzelle. The greatest disaster was setting the umbrella on fire (which inadvertently was a success as that episode went viral). Who’s been the most exciting person you’ve collaborated with? Making a video with Tannie Evita was a

4

big moment for me, she is such a South African icon and she was so supportive and encouraging. Which video is your personal favourite? How to get Fluff off a Jersey because it was the first episode that featured my best friend Marianne. How can women empower other women? I think it’s important for women to share their stories and experiences in any shape or form. For me it has been about exploring truth through comedy which I hope can make a difference. What is your top tip for aspiring entrepreneurs? Make sure that whatever you’re doing is something that you are extremely passionate about. When the times get tough it’s your passion that will carry you through. Do you feel prepared for Parenthood? Absolutely! I’ve always wanted to be a mom and it’s been a total whirlwind and crazy time so far! We love our baby Zoe. If you weren’t doing this, you’d be… ...illustrating children’s books.

For all the avid fans: The new SuzelleDIY Recipe Book is coming out in October! It will be a truly South African cook book featuring beloved local recipes with a Suzelle twist. It promises to be fun for the whole family!

WE CELEBRATE INSPIRATIONAL, ENTREPRENEURIAL WOMEN! DANELA CONTI BRYANT

SHELLEY LEWIN

HELEN UNTIEDT

What qualities make a great entrepreneur? Someone who has enthusiasm and a love for creating, remembering that creativity doesn’t only lie in paints and brushes. Pulling a project together or seeing an idea sprout from seed to harvest is also creating.

Where did the inspiration for your business come from? My career was born from my own wounds. My business evolved from my passion to understand and have healthy relationships. I followed the advice: Learn it. Live it. Give it.

What qualities make a great entrepreneur? Drive and determination, confidence, ambition, passion, self believe, creativity and persistence. Be prepared to do what it takes to make it work.

Who is your biggest mentor? My mom. As a single mom raising us, necessity was her biggest driver. And yet she always made time for “joie du vivre”, which is why I have recently added it to my logo. She reflected to me the perfect balance.

What qualities make a great entrepreneur? Perseverance. You really have to believe in yourself and continually grow and learn.

How can women empower other women? We need to share stories and life experience. Only by seeing the inspiration in others and connecting, do we really see into the mirror that reflects ourselves. What is the biggest struggle women face in the work place? Being taken seriously. Sadly, in my industry there is definitely still a “man club”. How do you manage the elusive work/life balancing game? I use my eyes to see what they are actually seeing, and not what I think they are seeing. In doing this I remember how lucky I am to be here, right now. Everything else falls into place and time opens up.

Who is your biggest mentor/role model? My persevering husband. He first inspired me to become a better person and partner. Then he demonstrated what entrepreneurship is all about. How can women empower other women? Support, promote and encourage each other to show up and shine. What is the biggest struggle women face in the work place? Gender bias and inequality. What is your top tip for aspiring entrepreneurs? Become an expert at your craft. Make sure you are making progress every day, even baby steps. Surround yourself with talented people who are good at the things you aren’t.

How can women empower other women? We need to keep learning and expanding our knowledge. Support each other and make sure our daughters are strong and confident. We need to encourage growth and gain confidence. What is the biggest struggle women face in the work place? We need to wear many hats-Mother, daughter, sister, wife and friend. Juggling is hard with a full day of work and then making sure we don’t drop the ball in the other areas and we keep our sense of humour. How do you manage the elusive work/life balancing game? I am lucky that I surround myself by an incredible team of people. I have help at home. A wonderful au pair to lift our youngest child and do most of our shopping and also helps with all the incidentals that keep our household running smoothly. At work I have also learnt to delegate.

Where did the inspiration for your business come from? I have always had a passion to assist with conflict resolution within families. I focus on solutions when providing advice on divorce and other family law issues.

Where did the inspiration for your business come from? I wanted to merge the insight I got through my undergrad in Psychology and passion to help people with my experience in beauty and create a safe, tranquil, unique space for people to feel good from the inside out and the outside in.

What qualities make a great entrepreneur? Passion for what you do, belief in your abilities and a steel determination.

Who is your biggest mentor/role model? I find daily inspiration from many great speakers and teachers such as John De Martini, Robin Sharma and Ann Wilson. What is the biggest struggle women face in the work place? Burnout- women are natural multitaskers and often take on too much. What is your top tip for aspiring entrepreneurs? Fill your day with high priority tasks and delegate those things that do not assist you in reaching your goals. How do you manage the elusive work/life balancing game? From 3pm on a Friday you won’t find me in the office - I will be with my children on the beach or visiting friends.

How do you manage the elusive work/life balancing game? No tradeoff – balance work, family, health, and play. Your downtime is the key. Make the most of it and make sure you are spending it on people and activities that don’t sap your energy, but rather enhance your happiness. Are entrepreneurs born or made? Where did the inspiration for your business come from? I was an art teacher for many years. In spending time with children, I noticed that they found it easier to express themselves through their drawings instead of words. I wanted to explore how to help them and after many years of studying different modalities I found an energy healing modality, Body Talk, that incorporates all other modalities and allows the body to determine how to heal itself. I opened a practice in Pretoria in 2011 and always dreamt of branching out to the Cape.

Where did the inspiration for your business come from? After completing my postgraduate studies and working in an upmarket salon in London for six years, I returned to Cape Town to open an advanced aesthetics clinic where treatments actually transform skin- giving long, lasting results.

How can women empower other women? Empowerment comes from within. Every step you take will empower you and bring you nearer your goal. What is your top tip for aspiring entrepre neurs? Believe in yourself and don’t give up.

Who is your biggest mentor/role model? My mother, my mentor, my friend, was born during the war, so she raised us to be independent, self-sufficient and never to rely on anyone. She taught me great work ethic, to be happy with your choices, never give up and to try find a balance of both personal and professional success!

How do you define success? To me my job is to make people fall in love with themselves, to see themselves as worthy and worthwhile. If I can help create that, then I’ve succeeded.

What is your top tip for aspiring entrepreneurs? You need to be willing to adapt and evolve in order to stay relevant in an industry that is competitive and fast moving.

How do you manage the elusive work/life balancing game? Time management. Be kind and patient with yourself.

Who is your biggest role model/ mentor? Mother Teresa. I try and live by one of her many quotes” It’s not about how much you do, but how much love you put into what you do that counts”

Where did the inspiration for your business come from? My inspiration is always my daughters and love of making beautiful objects. My aesthetic is artisanal African esoteric with a strong rock ‘n’ roll influence! Can you imagine where I would find that? So, I decided to make my own collections, interpreting ancient symbolism and layering it with dark luxury of antiqued metals and gemstones. My clients are lovers of design, independent thinkers, edgy and bold.

What qualities make a great entrepreneur? I think having passion and excellence in everything you do, staying abreast of new scientific studies and developments and being professional at all times!

Who is your biggest mentor/role model? My gran Lucy. During my younger years I never realized how busy she was at work. She always found time for house-keeping, parenting her kids and grandchildren, cooking etc while managing a full-time job.

How can women empower other women? It’s important for women to share stories and support each other in business and on a personal level. So many women in high level positions feel unsupported emotionally and struggle to find balance all round. Each business environment should have a supportive structure to address these issues. What is your personal motto when it comes to business? I believe that passion, integrity, dedication and hard work has assisted me in building my business. I try and give what I believe my clients need and make it affordable for the majority. How do you manage the elusive work/life balancing game. I have always tried to listen to my physical body as it speaks for us in slowing us down and forcing us to STOP and listen. I am aware that self love is the key to finding balance. Unless i care for myself in a loving way and feed my soul i’m not able to give in the way that i need too in my work environment.

JESSAMIE JARDIM: THAT SHOE LADY This month we met up with Jess Jardim, the young and dynamic owner of That Shoe Lady. After spotting a serious gap in South Africa’s shoe market – she set out to find and stock shoes that are different from the norm. Whatever her formula, it’s certainly working. Pop into one of her boutique stores and see for yourself. Disclaimer: You may not walk out empty handed. Jess, where did the inspiration for your business come from? To be honest, the business really started by accident. It started as a hobby of mine mid-studies (during December holidays,) and turned into a full-time job pretty quickly! After 3 months I went to register a business name and after 6 months I quit my studies to fully pursue the business. What qualities make a great entrepreneur? So many things, but to name a few (and I can work on a few of these things!) - resilience, being able to listen to those around you, confidence and good people skills. You need to be willing to put blood, sweat, and tears into your business - having a passion about the product/service really helps. Who is your biggest mentor/role model? My dad, who has had a huge influence on me, and really any other business owner. I have respect for anyone else who has gone through the growth pains of starting a business and pushes through the bad times to achieve success. What is the biggest struggle facing young women in the work place? I have had my fair share of exposure to misogyny, but I think our greatest struggle is actually ourselves - we tend to not believe in ourselves enough, and there are far fewer female business role models than there are male. Confidence is a great asset, but entitlement may hold you back. You need to be willing to work hard - really hard - if you want to succeed in the working world. What is your top tip for aspiring entrepreneurs? It will be the opposite of easy - keep pushing through anything is possible if you put your mind to it. What is your vision for the brand? I would like to fully saturate the South African market with small shops all over the country with our two main brands: Jeffrey Campbell and Dr. Martens, and it would be great to be able to expand to other countries after we have reached this initial target. Let us in on the top shoe trends we may see going into Spring. White leather boots are really in at the moment, but That Shoe Lady is not really about following trends. We order in shoes that are unique and relevant to current times, but also the type of shoes that are not necessarily ‘in’ this season and ‘out’ the next. Our clientele are confident women who buy shoes because they love them, not because they are the current fad.. What do you love most about what you do? Other than the shoes? :) I enjoy the overall operations of the business, the travelling, the excitement of expansion and opening new stores, or whatever the newest challenge might be.

Local expertise, national presence and international audience

Fine & Country Principal, Chris Hajec

MEET THE TEAM AT OUR CAMPS BAY OFFICE Fine & Country Sub-Saharan Africa, welcomes American born Christopher Hajec as its new Licensee Member, operating the Atlantic Seaboard Division from offices situated in Camps Bay and the V&A Waterfront. With a background in law and 20 years’ overall experience in the property industry, the last decade of which has been spent in South Africa, Hajec says from the beginning his goal has been to practice real estate in Cape Town, which he feels is among the most exciting markets in the world. The office in Camps Bay offers a gateway to South Africa, Mauritius and other key locations throughout the African continent for international buyers; comparable to the role played by the International Showroom of Fine & Country, situated in the prestigious Park Lane of London. In recent years, wealthy property investors have expanded their horizons and diversified their portfolios to incorporate Cape Town, which has evolved to become one of the world’s most enticing destinations for those who can enjoy the luxury playgrounds of the world. Hajec says he wasn’t surprised when told about the number of Americans visiting Cape Town as he recognises his native accent immediately and has heard it often since arriving. Fine & Country was established as a luxury brand to support approximately one thousand Guild Members in the UK in the year 2000. We are therefore honoured and grateful to experience the overwhelming support of UK investors in South Africa which we see as a consequence of their familiarity and trust in the brand. We believe that this is why often we are generally the first and frequently the only stop when selecting an agency available to these international buyers in Camps Bay. Chris is selecting his team to deliver 5-star service in an industry where 3-star service is seen as acceptable. He welcomes new additions to his team, Sandra Sibanda, a B-Comm candidate who comes from a family deeply rooted in property investment, formerly of Johannesburg; Steve Mndiata Patrick, originally from Malawi, who entered property after his own experiences with professionals in the field left him with the sense he could do far more for his future clients along with Eliza and Amelia Spencer, who have strong links to the UK where the brand was founded but who have a passion for the Cape Town property market. All of whom will add value to our already strong team and international network. Other members of the team include, Sharon Langdon, proud mother of three and long-time Sea Point resident; Shaun Taljaard, an enthusiastic industry veteran who is the Green Point area specialist; Kim Cooper, a 25 year property sales veteran and developer, recently appointed to the highly desirable Camps Bay and Bakoven area; Mary-Ann Trusler, knowledgeable long-time resident and area specialist for the hip and vibey Gardens district; Nicola Townsend, sectional title and off-plan development and area specialist for Fresnaye, Bantry Bay and the V&A Waterfront and Roshana Dharsey, dedicated Bo-Kaap area specialist.

BUYING OR SELLING PROPERTY ABROAD? REMEMBER TO GET THE NECESSARY DOCUMENTATION AUTHENTICATED Anyone who has ever bought or sold a property overseas or has been living abroad and had to sell a property in South Africa, has possibly gone through some frustration at some point, due to certain documentation being rejected as it has not been properly authenticated. Although technology helps in many cases to get documents back and forth, there is still a need to present physical proof of identity or ownership, as this prevents (or helps prevent) fraudulent transactions from taking place, says Rene Barry, partner at Henkes Nolte-Joubert Attorneys. The level of authentication does depend on the countries the involved parties reside in or are citizens of (according to whether the country is a signatory to the Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents), so it is best to seek advice from your attorney (even better if the firm has an in-house Notary Public) who can assist with ensuring all the paperwork involved in legal transactions across countries are valid, she said.

Documents signed in Namibia (unlike documents signed in Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland, Zimbabwe and United Kingdom of Great Britian) may not be authenticated before a Notary Public, however, as Namibia is a party to the Hague Convention documents can be authenticated by following the steps set out above.

Where countries are party to The Hague Convention, documents are signed and/or executed in the presence of a Notary Public. The Notary Public will attach a Certificate of Authentication to the documents which must bear his/her signature, stamp and seal. The documents are then forwarded to the High Court in the area in which the Notary Public practices. The Court will then attach an Apostille Certificate authenticating the Notary Public’s signature.

Barry says that many clients call on her services for powers of attorney – where they have sold property here or abroad but are not able to physically be present at the signing of documents, or where they are abroad and need their identity documents, marriage certificates, etc., authenticated so as to be able to open bank accounts or apply for finance. These processes can be trying even when in the country of birth, so it is always best to be prepared and ensure all documentation is in order beforehand, she said.

If the documents are to be used in a country which is a not a signatory to the Hague Convention and the parties are in South Africa, there are two additional steps to the ones above. The documents are processed as per usual and then submitted to the Legalisation Section at DIRCO (Department of International Relations and Co-operation) based in Pretoria to be legalised. Once legalised by DIRCO the documents are then forwarded to the Embassy/ Consulate of the country in which they are intended to be used for further authentication.

For further information contact Rene Barry on (021) 790 5075 or email rene@henkesnoltejoubert.co.za

It is interesting to note that documents signed in Antartica do not have to be authenticated.

CAFÉ CHARLES: A CUTE & COSY CORNER CAFÉ

Justine Burger is the passionate owner of Café Charles. The hospitality industry can be particularly gruelling, and we wanted to know how she manages to find a balance and the secrets to her success. I’d also like her Angus beef burger recipe but I suppose I’ll simply have to pop into her café and try it out for myself. Where did the inspiration for your Cafe come from? The inspiration for Café Charles is a tricky one. There are so many aspects spanning the past 8 years which have inspired and influenced this venture. Living in London, travelling around Europe, eventually moving to Cape Town and the amazing people whom I have met along the way. Not realising it at the time, but reflecting on it now, many women during my London stint have been an inspiration to me; from my beautiful Australian fellow coffee-addict Bella-Ann who introduced me to the ‘flatwhite’, my quirky French flatmate Floriane who often brought home champagne, saucisson, and French cheese from her travels, and my ex-boss Neema who at the time thought it a good idea to throw me into the pub kitchen. Falling into hospitality by accident in London as a means of a ‘last resort’ a few years back showed me a completely different side to the working world. The 9-5 office lifestyle had never been for me so when I found myself behind Neema’s bar and in the kitchen work life became a whole lot more interesting and fun! I wasn’t exactly planning to open a café in Cape Town. It was always only a thought, a dream in the back of my mind, but when the current space, situated in De Waterkant, was introduced to me by a friend, in that moment I saw potential for a cute and cosy corner café. What can diners expect in the way of food and ambience? Diners can expect tasty, bistro-style dishes prepared with mostly locally sourced, organic and best quality ingredients in a relaxed, homely ambiance. Menu items are sometimes inspired by childhood dishes my mother and grandmothers used to prepare at home. What qualities make a successful restaurateur? Good question! I’m not entirely sure as I’m still figuring that one out! I think for now I would say perseverance and following your instincts. And patience! Lots of patience. What is your top tip for aspiring entrepreneurs? Sometimes things don’t work out the way you want them to. Being able to improvise is key.

Contact details: Landline - 087 743 2359 Email - hello@thecharles.cafe www.thecharles.cafe

Describe your vision for the brand? My vision is about sharing joy through food and genuine hospitality. At the café we feel strongly about the choice of ingredients we use, where they come from, and how they are prepared. All of this has a strong impact on the health of us as individuals, our communities and the environment. How has your health consciousness influenced the menu? A few years back I experienced side effects from stress and anxiety and was forced to change my diet. Through this process I learnt how food can affect your body in positive and negative ways. When developing our menu we focus on healthy, freshly prepared dishes, avoiding unhealthy ingredients as much as possible. What is your favourite dish on the menu? Oh gosh. There are quite a few. I love food. But my go-to-dish is our beef burger. I just love it! Farmer Angus grass-fed beef is used to make the patty. We keep it simply spiced and no basting sauce to maintain the pure grilled beef flavour. We top it off classically with cheddar cheese, gem lettuce, gherkin, red onion, and our home-made chakalaka sauce, all on a soft brioche bun. Burger bliss! A very close second would be our seasonal vegetable risotto. Can non-hotel guests come and enjoy your culinary delights? Yes, of course! Anyone interested in good food, coffee and wine is very welcome. How do you manage the elusive work/life balancing game? Elusive is the perfect descriptive word. Work/life balance is extremely tough to maintain in the hospitality industry. The café is currently open 7 days a week and I am there most days, sometimes all day. My family and friends live in other cities which makes things a little difficult sometimes, but I speak to my mother, the voice of reason, quite often. I’m extremely thankful for her and my father’s support.

CELEBRATE WOMANHOOD THIS WOMEN’S DAY THE’ LUNCHTIME LIFT’ @ PULSE DERMATOLOGY AND LASER:

By Amy Bowie

Designed to treat a sagging jawline, crepey neck and fine lines and wrinkles,The Lunchtime Lift is avaivable exclusively at Pulse Dermatology and Laser. The treatments incorperate Near Infra Red inmotion Laser, a “back to basics” lifting and draining massage and the mesoestetics Anti-Ageing flash treatment.

The Near Infra Red In Motion Laser.

For years Patients have come to me with a concern of Jowels and loose skin on the neck. In the past the only way to treat this without having a lower facelift was with fractional ablative Laser (seriouse downtime and pain involved) or radiofrequency treament. I have used both modalities extensively in the UK. Then I trialed the Near Infra Red In Motion Laser from alma Lasers and I was taken aback by the results my patients were getting. It uses In Motion Laser technology, that means that instead of 1 large painful burst of light from the laser, it uses many lower fluence pulses. This way I can gradualy build up the level of heat and maintain it without ever

breaking the surface of the skin and without pain. It heats the Dermis and causes immediate collagen contraction so you get the instant tightening effect, however it also puts your fibroblast cells under attack so that they start to wake up and produce more collagen. Fibroblast cells are responsible for the production of collagen and each cell can do this between 50-100 times in our life. From about the age of 30, the cells start to get lazy and “sleep” so even if it has the potential to produce collagen another 30 times, it doesn’t, so it’s my job to wake them up. It also seems to tighten the fibrous bands in the muscles, which in turn gives patients a deeper lift. After the laser treatment, when the face and neck is heated up and all the circulation is improved, I have designed a Lifting massage which I then give to my patients. This is a cumalation of all the best massage moves I

You, but better

Want to be the healthiest, most attractive version of yourself? The Renewal Institute believes in a synergy of four essentials. 3. Homecare is vital

When it comes to looking good - in a way that’s natural and never overdone - there’s no single magic bullet. At The Renewal Institute, we know that creating ‘you, but better’, is something that takes a village and this is why our ethos is based on ‘the four pillars of anti-ageing’.

Investing in products containing proven anti-ageing ingredients and being disciplined about using them goes a long way towards fending off Father Time. Skin Renewal stocks a wide range of medical skin care products that can help you maintain a beautiful complexion.

1. Clever placement Injectables like Botox and fillers as well as the use of threads, if cleverly placed by an expert aesthetician, can reduce the look of wrinkles, restore a loss of volume and create a little lift. The goal is to create a look that’s refreshed, not re-worked.

4. Look after your health You can turn back the clock with a healthy lifestyle. Eating a balanced diet, drinking lots of water and getting regular exercise and enough sleep is essential. It’s also vital that you manage stress and use good quality supplements.

2. Texture is everything Beautiful skin is smooth, glowing, has an even texture and tiny pores. You can achieve this with regular peels, microdermabrasion, laser facials or needling. Each treatment on its own can make a visible difference but a combination yields the best results. Stockist of:

NECK CIRCLES/ NECK ROLLS By Dr Guy Ashburner, Osteopath

The doctor of the future will give no medication, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, diet and in the cause and prevention of disease.” Thomas A. Edison

puts the head and neck in an extreme position thus increasing the potential for both compression and hyperextension of the (neck) cervical spine, resulting instability and injury. Each neck movement performed individually within comfortable ranges for that individual is normal. However the older you get the less mobility you are likely to have in your neck.

Neck Circles or Neck Rolls are a warm up movement sometimes done prior to exercise or as an attempt to relieve neck and shoulder tension accumulated from poor posture, poor spinal and upper back mobility and stress after a long day. Circling the head is NOT a natural movement for the neck. Neck circles or Neck Rolls are performed by tucking the chin to the chest, and then rolling the head in a circular motion in an attempt to stretch the muscles and release joints of the neck. Neck Circles pose a risk to the neck due to the simultaneous combined motion of backwards bending of the neck, turning of the head, and side bending of the head and neck, sometimes with high speed motion. This motion

Neck joints allow for the neck to move through a normal range of motion. Since the circular neck rolling motion of the head is not a normal movement which causes the little facet joints on the back of the neck (cervical vertebra) to glide and compress against each other which can cause further damage to already degenerated cartilage surfaces. This can destabilize the facet joints and cause unnecessary wear and tear of these neck joints, which may make them more susceptible to degenerative changes. Neck circles can cause further damage to an already degenerated cartilage surface. Spinal instability could also lead to the narrowing of the spinal canal. With these degenerative changes, in certain neck positions, the foramen (where the nerves exit the spine) become even smaller and can compress or pinch the nerve, causing pain, numbness, and weakness wherever that nerve travels to in the arm. These symptoms

can be mild and temporary or severe and persistent, requiring medical treatment. The effects of aging – wear and tear on the spine can cause all kinds of degenerative changes, including disc degeneration, bone spurs and cartilage degeneration. When you move your head back beyond the point of just looking up, you can increase the potential for putting pressure on the vertebral arteries and with that reduce the blood flow to the brain. Neck circles can inhibit blood flow, particularly in the back of the neck where a pair of vertebral arteries carries about 25 percent of all blood going to the brain. (Bigger arteries in the front carry the other 75 percent.)This may cause dizziness. Neck circles are not safe and can cause all kinds of problems depending on the individual’s history: age, underlying spinal issues, the frequency of the activity, etc. If you feel the need to stretch and relieve tension in your neck, take a moment to think about whether the stretch you are about to perform is actually safe. If you have any uncertainty with regards to neck stretches you are currently performing, schedule an appointment with your local osteopath for professional treatment, rehabilitation and postural advice to ensure that your neck does not become a pain in the neck and your spine remains as healthy as possible.

YES YOU CAN…

WOMEN REINVENTING THEMSELVES If I were to look back over my years of counselling women, many of whom were going through a divorce, the death of a partner or some other life changing relational issue which left them terrified about their own abilities and their chances of survival, the fear of going forward alone for many of these women was so completely overwhelming that they could not envisage a successful life of their own making. Distress, panic and desperation has them then seeking help. Completely understandable of course when historically women were seen for so long as the home maker, care giver, primary parent and not always but often regarded as the lesser contributor to the home and finances, then further hindered by gender inequality in the workplace, it would be no wonder that women could see themselves as less than capable of becoming successful in their own right and making it on their own. Fortunately times are changing. For me this type of empowerment work is so gratifying. To see a previously fearful woman

in a vulnerable situation decide to embark upon working towards transforming herself into an independent and successful woman in her own right is often an unbelievable notion for them but when it happens, (and it does) it is oh so liberating. We can see how women can get ‘rail-roaded’ into this situation, and often women even in good relationships report that they have no idea of what the joint finances look like or they have little financial autonomy within the relationship. I can’t tell you how many times I hear a woman say: “I don’t buy anything for myself because I know it will ding on his cell phone.” How acceptable is it to allow ourselves to be disempowered in this way? Whether in a good relationship or leaving a bad one, empowerment and equality begins with establishing a personal identity outside of a relationship and the ability to have autonomy. If you can achieve this you reduce the risk of potential unpleasant shocks in the future and fortify your own self-respect. In therapy we

By Janet Winterbourne work on re-framing our often-negative self-image and realise that we are worth more. We work to increase skills, self-confidence and opportunities by seeing ourselves how we would like to be and work towards achieving that goal. Sometimes just being told by another uninvolved individual that you ‘can’ do this inspires a willingness to think outside of the box and achieve independence and success. Successful people believe in themselves, which boosts confidence and enables (with some effort) dreams to come true. Sometimes you just need somebody to walk the walk with you, support and strategize when needed and do some planning to get you up and running. Whether you want or need total liberation from relationship constraints or suddenly find yourself in a financial difficulty, you can start somewhere in gaining knowledge and forming your own identity. Achieving privacy and autonomy, whether in or out of a relationship is a fundamental basic to self regard and your ability to cope if a disaster should happen your way.

COMPLETE YOUR OUTDOOR LIVING SPACE WITH DECKS AND DECK FURNITURE.

COVER YOUR POOL WITH A REMOTE-CONTROLLED DECK WITH TIMBER OR COMPOSITE We can help you lock up the most valuable commodity in the Western Cape by installing pool slide covers, remote or manually operated, which when closed will create extra outdoor living space while keeping your water safe

WHERE

Our factory is situated at 13 Christopher Starke Road, Atlantis and we service the West Coast, City Bowl, Boland, and Helderberg area. Our factory is equipped with all the solid woodworking machines to be able to make any advanced timber products. A wide range of timbers are available to suit your needs and we machine the timber ourselves to enable a clip system for our decking which is designed by Decks and Deck Furniture, with concealed stainless steel screws, which means that there are no visible screws on your deck. Most of our workers have been with us for over 10 years and we strive to make your building experience enjoyable while we add value to your property.

Decks and Deck Furniture have mastered the art of installing remote controlled and manually operated pool slide covers to create extra outdoor living space. When closed it is as safe and strong as the rest of the deck. If you might be interested in installing a pool slide cover, that retracts in underneath the deck, please call us so we can discuss the necessary measurements and heights off plan to allow it to be practically possible

Don’t let water restrictions ruin your summer time we say…

DON’T WET IT … DECK IT! Every drop counts!

WHO Decks and Deck Furniture was established in 2001 by John McClelland.

WHAT

The business started by focusing on building timber decks and quickly expanded, offering an extensive range of products and services.

SYNSPORT Synsport is a family business which started in 1994 and is the original synthetic sport surfacing company in South Africa. Over the years we have become the market leaders in artificial turf systems. The move to synthetic sports surfaces is a worldwide phenomenon due to the uniformity of the surface, maintenance costs, water savings and most importantly that it can be used 24/7 without the draw backs associated with natural turf. Since 1994 we have come a long way and now supply and install surfaces that meet the specifications for sporting disciplines such as soccer, hockey, rugby, cricket, netball, golf, athletics, indoor sports and play areas. We offer a turn-key operation which sees us doing our own civil works, base design, surface install, fencing, netting, score boards and any other ancillary items.

With our extensive experience in the laying of sports surfaces, we turned our attention to designing our own range of landscape products under the Synthetic Lawn brand – powered by Synsport. Starting with the product SYNSCAPE, carefully developed synthetic lawn products that have a realistic look and feel great. We provide top quality products and service expected of the top artificial turf company in South Africa. Synthetic lawn has also made a huge impact on playgrounds and gardens. Over 200 schools and crèches (and growing) have already approached us to transform their muddy play areas into beautiful, soft and clean spaces. We offer a variety of products to help you turn your troubled lawn into a happy low maintenance area for your family and pets. Or you can even turn that unused space into your own personal synthetic putting green or mini soccer pitch for the whole family to enjoy.

If you need any information on our company or where to find a retailer or installer near you please visit www.synsport.co.za or dial 021 987 1441.
