Kelvin Swing is a dynamic wheelchair where the persons micromovements activate and crate the rocking movement that release the hormone oxytocine and stimulate our sensory feedback. The hormone Oxytocine is a natural brake for the amygdala that otherwise creates the 3 – F reactions Freeze, Fight and Flight. A chair with many possibilities for a broad target group across sectors, with which it has been developed in close collaboration.

Kelvin Swing is a dynamic wheelchair where the persons micromovements activate and crate the rocking movement that release the hormone oxytocine and stimulate our sensory feedback. The hormone Oxytocine is a natural brake for the amygdala that otherwise creates the 3 – F reactions Freeze, Fight and Flight. Other chairs are static don’t allow sensation of dynamic feedback from rocking.

Target Group and Product Utility

What user group is the product intended for and what benefit can the user get from the product?

The chair’s rocking function is especially intended for people with low or high arousal levels but has beneficial effect on the respiratory system. The Kelvin Swing is often used for people with dementia in the latest stages, agitated people, people with COPD, people in palliative care people in delirious states where the rocking movement can provide calm and relief. People with reduced lung function and increased secretions have good effect from the function. The chair is also useful in connection to early mobilization at ICU, Neurological units and rehabilitation units. In what way does the product support the user’s opportunity for participation and independence?

The Swing function support the possibility of seated movement and reduce agitated behavior, restlessness and pain. This can promote the individual`s opportunity to participate in social contexts without promoting the 3-F reactions. The possibility of being able to cough up secretions independently and optimize the conditions for the respiratory system as well as it makes early mobilization possible.

The product is aimed at the primary and secondary sector, where both sectors have been stakeholders in the development and testing process.

Designed to appear welcoming as a “calm guest” in a friendly color, the cover is breathable and can be washed in case of incontinence. The chair has wheels and can be easily moved, and the rocking function can be locked, e.g. during meals. Individual adjustments and accessories are possible. The product has a high recycling value and can be used by different types of users. The Chair can be flexibly adapted. In case of disposal, the majority can be reused. The product complies with GDPR requirements.

Product development

Has there been collaboration with the target groups in the development phase?

In the past years, citizens, patient’s relatives and health staff form primary and secondary sector across DK have been involved in development of kelvin swing. Where they have given feedback on e.g. appearance, the effect of the chair, ergonomics and reusability.

In connection with the development of the Kelvin swing, we have particularly focused on the world goals:
