Hey all! Let me be the first to break the heavy silence. School is in and it‟s time to put away the multi-coloured nail polish and blue hair dye. Before we get knee-deep into our academic adventures, take a look back… Hopefully, you‟ve all taken the holiday and worked productively with it. (By worked, I mean to say relaxed, earned money and all that jazz). The school term has two and a half of the usual cycles before exams begin. I hate to preach, but get ahead of your studies. By going through your work each day (it‟s not as bad as it sounds, stop cringing) you retain much more information. When exams come, they will fly right by because you will be prepared. This term, the matric body will be (practically) out of the system and our hierarchy will be missing its ruling monarch. Now, until the senior year of 2011 rises to power, there may be some confusion between the different ranks. In order to nip this in the bud, let us examine the situation. Grade 8s will remain Grade 8s until the beginning of next year. Grade 11s: yes, the matrics may be gone but we are not quite there yet. You may not like it, but each of the stages of life at Parel Vallei exists for a reason. One does By going through not break the natural laws or all hell will break loose… Let that wait until 2012. We your work each each have to earn our privileges. day (it’s not as October is the official induction into summer. It is the time to crank up the bad as it sounds, volume (in the comfort of your living stop cringing) you quarters) and whip out the exercise machines your parents bought while retain much more going through their respective midlife information. crisis. People of PV, it is time to get your body into fighting form for your bikini and Speedo debut. As a human being, I understand that when your hamstrings are stretched to their limits and your glutes are screaming for relief, you may want to give up. I want you all to adopt the motto that has seen political leaders, philanthropists and Victoria Secret Angels through the perils of severe physical punishment: REMEMBER DECEMBER! See you (if you survive)! Chanté

Note to all editors and editor wannabes: Don‟t put 37 people on your cover… it‟s very stressful. That being said, I‟d do it again. Being a lover of fashion (and the fashion director) I really wanted to do a spring/summer style guide this month… but there simply wasn‟t enough space and I couldn‟t pass up the matric fashion feature. So since there is no style guide, I decided to squish all my advice on fashion‟s flowery new feel into this page. Here goes… Have a great spring! xoxoDaniël^^ TREND: PRINTS (1) It‟s time to ransack Grandma‟s closet: florals are back! It is without a doubt the most popular trend of the season (it‟s in ALL the style guides and very prominent in chain stores) and everyone will be wearing it. So while this is without a doubt an easy trend to wear and style, it can get very boring. When shopping for prints, why not go for something more futuristic like digital print (beautifully expressed by Alexander McQueen) tribal, monochrome or my personal favourite: techno floral? It‟ll definitely make a better statement and turn heads. Wear with chunky wedges in faded pastel shades for a casual lunch or killer stilettos for a night on the town… if it‟s a dress. If it‟s a shirt or a skirt, pair it with denim and light-shade brogues. TREND: UTILITARIAN (2) All you need is a sleeveless trench dress and chunky (almost scary) heels to pull this look off. There are many ways to wear utility this season: a trench over a draped dress pulled together with a camel belt, long turn-up trousers with clogs, or a utility jacket with shorts and (Luella style) utility clogs. When shopping for utility, make sure you know to what extent you‟ll be wearing the trend. Will you be showing only hints of it in a soft shirt or safari shorts? Or will you be going all the way and investing in a hard-hitting trench? Make sure you know where you stand: it‟s all or nothing. Wear with something more soft and feminine: whether it‟s a dress under a hard jacket or the folds of an animal print scarf, always make sure your outfit has a detail that reminds people that you‟re not a member of the army. TREND: MODERN MINIMALISM (3) One item. A dress. Wide trousers. A basic leather T. There are no frills or bold colours, only beautiful sculpture-like shapes with the occasional slick statement jewelery… and you‟re ready to go! When shopping for minimalist pieces, invest in quality items that complement your shape and don‟t need much else to create an outfit. Stick to white, black, light blues and camel shades. A perfect place to start your search for these pieces is Trenery and Country Road at select Woolworths stores. Wear with basic pieces that complete your outfit but don‟t distract from the main attraction. Black stilettos and a crisp white shirt will complete your outfit.

ALFREDA SIMAKANI tells us how PV INTERACT celebrated spring by GIVING BACK

P

arel Vallei High Schoolâ€&#x;s interact team celebrated Spring Day by visiting a number of old age homes in Somerset West. Our Interact team has succeeded in giving back to the community through various means, such as the weekly bread drive for a school located in Macassar, PATCH and now putting a smile on the faces of our senior citizens. Beautiful flowers and scrumptious biscuits were handed to the elderly as a symbol of the start of a new, brighter and happier season. The elderly of Robari Lodge, one of the old age homes visited, were also blessed with singing from the new PVHS singing group Ingelosi who received an anchor. Ingelosi is a Xhosa word for Angels. This singing group was formed in the beginning of the year 2010 and consists of seven girls. The aim of these old age homes is to look after and nurse senior citizens who can no longer look after themselves. There they can receive special care for their specific medical needs by trained care givers and nurses in the institution. The matron of Robari Lodge stated that one needs to be patient, kind and passionate to do such a job. Spending time with the elderly is beneficial because not only do you feel good about giving back to the community but you are also told

interesting stories about the past. One of the ladies at Robari Lodge has travelled around the world 43 times. PVHS interact team is an association in our school that has done a tremendous job in helping our community this year. They have proved that you can never be too young to make a difference in somebodyâ€&#x;s life. The Interacters need a large amount of help too. I encourage you to take part in this initiative so that you too can make a difference.

JUST IN CASE YOU HAVEN’T NOTICED… PAREL VALLEI ROCKS – LITERALLY! WE HAVE COUNTLESS MAJORLY TALENTED BANDS THAT ARE IN OR CAN BE TRACED BACK TO PV. HERE ARE JUST A FEW…

THE RISING STARS

ZANDILE NDAY chats to IMPROMPTO…

HOW DID THE BAND GET TOGETHER? Ipeleng our “leader” had the four of us jamming some Freshlyground materials together, just to kill our long, boring afternoons. So we decided to form a band (true story). WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THE BAND’S NAME? We got together spontaneously. Simple. DEFINE YOUR GENRE AND WHAT INSPIRED THE SOUND? Mmmmhh… We`d say afro pop, inspired by Freshlyground. WHO DOES WHAT IN THE BAND? Oliver is in charge of the drums and percussion. Ipeleng is on bass guitar. Kes is on guitar and Nick kills it on sax. DO THE BAND MEMBERS GET ALONG WELL? We all hate each other but spiritual music brings us together. ARE THERE ANY ARTISTS THAT YOU FEEL WOULD BE FIT TO COLLABORATE WITH YOU? Freshlyground. ARE YOU PLANNING TO CONTINUE WITH THIS BAND AFTER HIGH SCHOOL? That would be a definite no. We never pictured it continuing after going our separate ways after school. WHAT KEEPS THE BAND MOTIVATED AND WHO ARE YOUR ROLE MODELS? The image of the future and Freshlyground. TO END OFF, DESCRIBE YOUR BAND IN TWO WORDS? Freshlyground wannabes. Image sources: flaming guitar: http://dark.pozadia.org/images/wallpapers/89902600/Guitar%20Wallpapers/Guitar%20on%20Fire .jpg ; band picture from Zandile Nday

THE BAND WITH THE TEACHER

If you look in the corridors of Parel Vallei, take a closer look at one of the student teachers. The teacher-to-be in question is one mister ROBERT VOLKERR (as in Falke). He is the lead vocalist of the band LOTTERY TICKETS and when our team discovered this, we had to find out more. Thankfully, he kindly sacrificed his coffee break to chat to us. The writer of this piece (CHANTÉ CHARLES) added the bits in brackets.

GETTING BACK TO BASICS, HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE THERE IN YOUR BAND? There are five of us. WHO ARE THEY AND WHAT IS EACH OF YOUR ROLES? Two of them are friends from school. There is James Acker, who takes to strumming on the guitar and singing, Michael Tymbios, who belts out the bass, Julian Brookstone, who deals with the drums, Dean Bellingam (do we not know him), who is our synth-and-sax man, and me on the lead vocals and guitar. HOW DID THE BAND COME TOGETHER AND WHY DID YOU START IT? My band was formed in high school (Paul Roos) as a joke. Our first intentions were to write songs about girls, play eight shows and then break up. After we started, we enjoyed it so much that we continued. WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST HIGHLIGHT FOR YOU SO FAR? The biggest highlights were the music video being a success and simply performing every gig. WHAT IS NEXT ON SCHEDULE FOR THE LOTTERY TICKETS? At the end of the year, we will be touring up to Johannesburg and we will be filming more music videos. (And the fan-girls go wild!) HOW CAN ALL OF THE RABID FANS CONTACT YOU? You can always contact us through Facebook (ah, the wonders of modern technology) and all are invited to come see our shows. TO END OFF, DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR BANDS-IN-PROGRESS? To everyone, I recommend creating a band purely for the fun of it. School is without a doubt the best place for that (because grown-ups are weird like that). Have fun and make friends. As you can see, ladies and gentlemen, bands do not have to start from some soul-searching pilgrimage. All you need is a decent voice and a musical inclination. Follow the wise advice of one of our resident student teachers, and start now. Look to Mr Volkerr’s success. I know I certainly am. It is time to dust off your blue suede shoes and rock on! Long live The Lottery Tickets!

THE OLD DOGS

RICK KLEINHANS reports on STAAR-STAAR-DANS… They are an electronic-dance-rock duo singing in Afrikaans. They are made up of two PV old boys - Jannik Richter (Guitar, Backing Vocals) and Neil de Vos (Lead Vocals). Both of them also use laptops to produce rad electronic beats and sounds. They have just been signed by a talent agency as I write this. If you like any sort of rock, dance or electronic music, you should really check their music out. 'Die Heuwels Fantasties' fans should also expect to dig their sound. Just go on Facebook, search for Staar-Staar-Dans and listen to their songs. If you like what you find there, check out their song (Al wat ek sê) on MFM and vote for them. Also – get yourself to their gigs.

THE BAND WITH THE HEAD BOY RICK KLEINHANS gives you the ULTIMATE update on what’s happening with PETER POON. They play Afrikaans-indie-reggae-rock and also sing in Afrikaans. The band members are Aldert du Toit (Lead Guitar and Vocals), Dean Bellingan (Saxophone), Richard Onraet (Bass, Acoustic Guitar and Backing Vocals) John van Zyl (Drums). All of whom were in PV. They won the 2008 Rockspider competition and have just released their debut album: Blus my vuur. That's a whole lot in the past 2 years! Peter Poon really refreshes the Afrikaans rock scene with a jazzy, funky sound that lingers in their music. You can check Facebook for their music videos, songs and upcoming gigs.

Where did all your 5 cents go???

On Saturday 4 September, Parel Vallei High Schoolâ€&#x;s Interact Club participated in the 5c Towers of Hope Fundraiser, to raise money for PATCH. The event took place at Waterstone Village, and many schools from all over the area took part. Participants from each school spent the morning building towers out of the 5c coins they had raised over the past few months. Each school also had the opportunity to showcase who they were and what they were doing for the community.

Points were awarded for the size of the tower and for presentation, and at the end of the day Hottentots Holland High School was chosen as the winner. Hundreds of thousands of 5c coins were raised, and all of the money was donated to PATCH, which is the Helderberg Child Abuse Centre. All-in-all the event was a huge success, not only in raising money, but also in raising awareness for child abuse in South Africa.

The future of your TV is

R

ecently, 3D movies have become increasingly popular. It wasn’t that long ago when the arrival of a 3D movie would be marvelled at. Now it is almost expected that any big budget film will be released in 3D. With this rise in popularity, the technology powering these 3D films has also developed exponentially (Compare Spy Kids 3D with Pocahontas in Space Avatar). As with most things that appear on the big screen, this technology will soon be coming to a TV screen near you. But how does it actually work? 3D technology is based on the fact that humans have two eyes, so we are actually always seeing two images made into one by our brains. This allows us to see height, width and depth (for the Math Lit kids: those are known as dimensions and there are three of them. You can count them for yourself.) To create an artificial 3D image, all you need to do is show each eye a different picture of the same thing from a

different angle. Simple? Not really. There are two ways to achieve this effect, and both revolve around the type of glasses used to view the 3D image. The first type uses what is known as passive glasses. This is what is used in cinemas. The lenses are either tinted (one red, one blue) or are individually polarised. Both of these options have the same effect. When the 3D image is projected, both the images for your eyes are projected at the same time on the same wall. In the case of the red-blue glasses, the image for the eye behind the blue lens has too little blue in it (making it look red), and the image destined for the eye behind the red lens has too little red in it (making it look blue). This way each lens cancels out the images destined for the other eye and the image meant for the eye behind the lens is colour corrected by the colour of the filter (i.e. the image lacking blue has its blue boosted by the blue filter).

Screen Red image

Remember:

Blue image

The blue and red images are actually views of the same onscreen image from two different angles. This means that the resulting image in each eye is slightly different so as to produce the 3D effect.

Normal image

Left Eye

Right Eye

Polarised lenses work in the same way, but with other more complicated properties of light. Polarised lenses are more popular than the red-blue ones because they don’t mess with the colours of the image. The second type of 3D glasses is known as active glasses. This is the type of glasses that is used for the new 3D TVs. These still use the principle of showing separate images to each eye, but use a much more primitive method than passive glasses. Basically, all that the glasses do is close your one eye so that the TV can show the image to the other eye, and then vice-versa. The glasses are synchronised with the TV to block the correct eye when the correct image is shown on the screen. This is done at a speed that is

unnoticeable to the human eye and thereby effectively delivers two views of the same object to each eye: the 3D effect. That’s the basics of 3D technology: a mere optical illusion. It’s not quite the holographic images of the future we’re still fervently hoping for, but it is a start. For now, we can only look forward to creative directors doing mind-blowing things with the technology we have at present, and dream of the days when we will be able to see, hear and feel the Starship Enterprise thunder through our living rooms.

and recommendations should be followed. Results are not always immediate, but may take a few days to show a change. Aircon helps and allergic persons should avoid being outdoors too much during seasons of hay fever. Shots can be taken to lessen symptoms and effects thereof. Most important, you should ensure that your house is clean and free of moulds.

PREVENT! Be aware of the pollen count during your susceptible months. Keep windows and doors shut when pollen is high. Keep away from grassy areas when pollen counts are high. Regularly splash your eyes with cool water. It will soothe them and clear them of pollen. When driving on a high-count day or time of day keep windows closed. There are pollen filters for cars. Do not have flowers inside your home. Keep your surfaces, floors, carpets as dust free as possible. If you use a vacuum cleaner, make sure it has a good filter. Ask smokers not to let their smoke get near you. If you are a smoker, giving up will help reduce your symptoms. Generally, hay fever can be treated with tablets to lessen the effects thereof, nasal spray can be taken and every grandmother has some home-made remedy available. However, if your symptoms do not get better after you have self-treated, if you have a fever, your nasal secretions are coloured, thick or bloody, you have a severely sore throat, or if you have earache or an ear discharge, then it advisable for you to seek the advice of a doctor. Very high fevers, difficult breathing, uncontrolled bleeding or earache or ear discharge is serious and should be seen as an emergency situation.

SELF-MEDICATE! Gargle with warm salt water (1-2 tablespoons salt in a glass of warm water) to cure a sore throat. For relief from sneezing, a runny nose, and an itchy throat or eyes, take nonprescription medication. Remember to keep in mind that the meds might have side effects like drowsiness, etc. Nasal sprays are available to clear congested noses.

The first month of spring is behind you, the holidays are behind you and it's another whole term, plus the November exams before the December holidays. You really need some great tjoones to keep you rockin' through every day… HERE THEY ARE! BY RICK KLEINHANS The National : HIGH VIOLET Yes, there is something a bit too similar about their songs but that's fine 'cause they're great. They have a very different sound that is both very depressing and extremely uplifting at the same time. In the entire album one thing however stands out - Matt Beringer. His voice is not only very unique, it is just one of the best voices out there. You won't find a better CD for your summer road trip. Nas + Damian Marley (ft. K'naan and more): DISTANT RELATIVES This is the album that reminds you why hip-hop has ruled the past decade and why reggae will never die. Filled with more than just bouncing beats and kief raps. It proves why Nasir Jones deserves more credit than he gets and that Damian Marley truly is becoming as great as his father was. It has meaningful lyrics about real issues, contributions from great artists like K'naan and Lil Wayne and a final product that gives you real music. You will really be able to listen to this one for years to come. The Black Keys : BROTHERS I was one of the misguided people who always thought real rock began to die when Guns ‘n Roses split up and blues was dead even before that. Idiot. Not only do The Black Keys prove it is still alive; they prove that it's getting better. These two guys from Ohio produce a sound that is as full as it is raw. Pat Carney provides some of the best drum playing ever and Dan Auerbach is not only one of the best blues guitarists of our generation but he's got a great voice too. Anybody who digs artists like Hendrix, Clapton, Aerosmith, Kings Of Leon.... should definitely check this one out. Mumford and Sons : SIGH NO MORE If you like folk or acoustic music you'll love these four guys from London. I mean, not only do they have an accordion and a double bass, they have a freakin' electric banjo! Plus a bunch of other instruments – and they can all sing as well. This leads them to produce a very full, unique and varying sound which is great. For those of you who want songs that you can sing along to, these guys are your perfect match. You'll be singing along to 'Little Lion Man' in no time. Other albums you should look at are : The Pretty Reckless : LIGHT ME UP Vampire Weekend : CONTRA The Roots : HOW I GOT OVER Slash : SLASH Bombay Bicycle Club : FLAWS Laura Veirs : JULY FLAME Image sources: From top: http://discosalt.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/the-national_high-violet.jpg http://www.youheardthatnew.com/wp-content /uploads/2010/04/DistantRelatives-490x490.jpg http://www.rollogrady.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/the-black-keys-brothers-300x300.jpg http://ajc4.files.wordpress.com/2010/07/sigh-no-more-packshot.jpg http://gossipteen.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/TaylorMomsen-Light-Me-Up-Album-Cover-PHOTOS.jpg

ZAC EFRON graduates high school and the HOTTEST NEW TREND in literature. DANIËL GELDENHUYS tells all… FILM: CHARLIE ST.CLOUD DIRECTED BY Burr Steers (17 Again) BASED ON THE NOVEL BY Ben Sherwood STARRING Zac Efron, Amana Crew, Kim Basinger. GENRE Drama IN THEATRES 22 OCTOBER It seems that Zac Efron has finally put his high school years behind him to make the type of film which, according to most, is not groundbreaking but perhaps a move in that direction. The idea of the film is an intriguing concept to say the least: Efron‟s character undergoes a traumatic experience that allows him to see the world in a very different way. And by different I mean (SPOILER ALERT!) he can see dead people! It all comes down to a choice: (Eclipse style, but not really) Charlie has to choose between living for the past and living for the future, a decision that is harder to make than it may seem… You might like the film, you might not. It‟s not a work of art but it‟s a good night out and the cinematography is excellent. You may as well go watch it… you won‟t be ripping your eyes out. (That‟s for sure.)

BOOK: HUSH, HUSH BY Becca

Fitzpatrick R113 AT EXCLUSIVE BOOKS. People of PV, read this carefully: there is a huge new trend on the rise in literature. Angels. Yes, angels are said to be the new vampires. Think about it: there are only two Twilight movies left (just as there were only three Happy Potters left when Twilight went big) and shows like Vampire Diaries and True Blood are past their first seasons and numerous writers, including the acclaimed Anne Rice, are starting to write books about angels. There you have it! It‟s the new trend. Are you going to buy (or read) into it? You may as well: It‟ll be burning up the big screen in a few years. A good place to start is hush, hush by Becca Fitzpatrick. An epic love story about a girl who falls for the mysterious new guy at her school only to find out he‟s a fallen angel. (Note the cover.) She then gets pulled into an ancient battle between the immortals and those who have fallen. Does this sound a little like Twilight to you? Whatever the case, it‟s a good seller. Hush, hush daubed at number ten on the New York Times Bestseller List and the sequel, crescendo, as I write this will be released in 20 days, 8 hours, 16 minutes and 36 seconds. (According to the countdown on the website.) Oh, and there will be a third one. Read it and decide for yourself whether you‟re team Stephanie or team Becca. Or whether the two can‟t be compared at all…

I tend to get angry easily. (If people do something completely different from what was asked of them; or if they‟re late for no reason.) PV IS SPECIAL BECAUSE… There‟s a place for everyone and everyone in their place. FAVOURITE WORD AND FAVOURITE TEACHER… Whistle, bubbles, faith. Mrs M de Villiers. YOU’RE LOCKED IN A ROOM WITH SOMEONE FROM HH AND SOMEONE FROM STRAND. WHAT DO YOU DO? Get to know them and find out a bit more about their school (not in a bad way). Find out how things are done in their school to maybe get some tips or give some tips.

WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING THERE IS TO KNOW ABOUT YOU? I am completely passionate about drama. I love being on stage – I‟d live there if I could. Oh, and I‟m a complete cluts. WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN NO ONE IS LOOKING? I have a habit of daydreaming in class… which leads to sleeping in class. But then everyone looks at me. IF YOU COULD HAVE DINNER WITH ANY PERSON IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD, WHO WOULD IT BE? Ian Somerhalder. And Jared Leto, so I can convince him to marry Lana de Beer. IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ABOUT YOURSELF, WHAT WOULD IT BE? I would have a way less hectic schedule so that I have more time for some of the things in life that are important to me, like friends, family and fun. PV IS SPECIAL BECAUSE… It‟s just better than any other school. FAVOURITE WORD AND FAVOURITE TEACHER… Serendipity. I have a lot of favourite teachers… I have a special spot for Mrs Rossouw though. YOU’RE LOCKED IN A ROOM WITH SOMEONE FROM HH AND SOMEONE FROM STRAND. WHAT DO YOU DO? Call them something which is not fit to print and lock myself in the closet.

WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING THERE IS TO KNOW ABOUT YOU? I blush easily… Even when I‟m not embarrassed. WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN NO ONE IS LOOKING? I sing, but then no one must be listening as well. IF YOU COULD HAVE DINNER WITH ANY PERSON IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD, WHO WOULD IT BE? Amelia Earheart; she could give a lot of good advice, as well as take me on a trip in her plane. IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ABOUT YOURSELF, WHAT WOULD IT BE? Erm… my voice. I love singing, but I‟m terrible at it. So to protect my family and friends‟ ears, I want a good voice. Other than that, I‟m perfectly happy as I am. PV IS SPECIAL BECAUSE… We‟re still so young, but we‟ve accomplished so much. FAVOURITE WORD… Anemone. YOU’RE LOCKED IN A ROOM WITH SOMEONE FROM HH AND SOMEONE FROM STRAND. WHAT DO YOU DO? Make polite conversation, making sure I don‟t bring up anything about interschools, because they might get jealous and hurt me.

Two of these girls and two of these guys will become the new head leaders… but who will they be? Tell us who you think will make it by sending an email to ultimatepv@iafrica.com

We understand that sometimes you’re just too lazy to go to the gym (or you never do) or you just don’t have time for a workout. LAVERNE FLORIS brings you a great way to ‘live at the gym’…

IN BED: FLATTEN YOUR ABS 1. Lift your head, neck and shoulders off the bed. Use your arms to pull your left leg in as you raise your right leg in the air. 2. Switch legs, extending the left one as you grab the right. That‟s one rep. Do 12.

IN CLASS: SHAPE YOUR THIGHS 1. Sit up tall in your chair with both feet on the floor. Concentrate on keeping the entire upper body still. 2. Stay still as you lift one foot off the floor. Count to 5, then return to step 1. Do 5 of these with each leg.

ON THE PHONE: WORK YOUR CALVES 1. Stand with your legs and heels glued together and your big toes about 5 cm apart. 2. Rise up onto the balls of your feet, then slowly return to step 1. Do 3 sets of 10 reps.

STUDYING: TIGHTEN YOUR BUTT 1. Lie on your stomach with your legs straight and together. Lift your feet and knees off the floor. 2. Open your legs to hip width. Then close them so that your heels touch. Do 10 steps with legs in the air, then rest. Do 3 sets.

WATCHING TV: TONE YOUR ARMS 1. Sit up tall with legs crossed at shins. Open your arms out to the sides, letting hands hang a little lower than your shoulders. 2. Bring both arms forward until your fingertips touch. Return to start. Do 2 sets of 10
