Located in the fashion district in downtown Los Angeles, CONCENTRATED DECOMPRESSION serves as a mixed use building with a diverse internal program.

Featuring retail and restaurant space, a boutique hotel, a transient hotel, creative office space, and a range of housing types, the building acts as a unique neighborhood within itself. In order to serve the community or “neighborhood” as a whole, the building seeks to blend contrasting programs through the design of three areas of decompression. Using large voided spaces within the interior, unique programmatic and community connectors cantilever into the building’s atriums, designed with specific programs in order to foster natural interactions between contrasting communities. The building as a whole seeks to serve not only the outside community of Downtown Los Angeles, but the microcosm of the city within.

Initial formal studies for the project revealed the unique potential to erode the interior of a mass through the differencing of objects from the exterior. In the case of the studies, the erosion of interior space not only acts as a decompression of a dense object, but results in a unique inside to outside relationship.

DECOMPRESSION VOIDS Using concepts derived from the initial studies, the building takes advantage of voided space in order to decompress the dense building program. Using skylights or “intakes” on the top of the building, natural light washes the interior of the structure. The voids laterally puncture the building at four “exhaust” points, enhancing natural ventilation while also blending the interior and exterior space.

While the voids act as program decompressors, they also create a unique opportunity to connect communities and programs that would not typically interact on a daily basis. By tailoring “Connection Rooms” to their local programs and communities, the voids seeks to encourage social interaction.

Modular housing units were created as an organizational and design strategy for the project. Based on a 60’ x 25’ module, each super-unit can house a maximum of six units consisting of varying types and divisions.

The building takes a nuanced formal approach, emphasizing internal programmatic changes on the exterior facade. This is highlighted through the modular housing units, intake and exhaust points for the voids, double height glazing for the office space, and punched openings for the hotel. In a way, the design acts as a macrocosm, with the greater whole representing the smaller details inside.

One of the most striking features of Rome is the definition of layers within the city. Rome exists as a palimpsest, with each section in the ground defining a unique period of the past.

Interestingly, buildings in Rome take on this same essence of stratification. They exist as a combination of new and old, built over centuries, exposing different layers of history within a single facade. Rather than tearing down a building in order to build anew, STRATIFY engages this concept. The new building merges with the old, layering the two facades to create a uniquely new composite - a hybrid of history and the present.

South Proposed The project is designed as a radical takeover of the existing building, carving through and wrapping the old in the new.

The skin then peels back to give hints at the layering of the structure, a stratification effect common to Rome.

A booming city now defined by abandonment and decay, Detroit has transitioned into a theme park for urban explorers who trade in the culture of ‘ruin porn’. Unfortunately, the story of Detroit is not an anomaly, but rather one of many cautionary tales about the decline of the manufacturing industry and the cities which relied upon it.

Spurred-on by programmatic failure, government and economic corruption, socioeconomic tensions, and the inability to adapt to changing conditions, my thesis explores the cause and effects of these issues in relation to neighborhoods within the city of Detroit.

THE SPOILS OF INDUSTRY While many cities and towns throughout the Rust Belt experienced the negative effects of their reliance upon the manufacturing industry, Poletown in Detroit was particularly devastated. After having lost over 40,000 jobs from the closure of local automotive plants, the final straw for Poletown came in the 1980s. With the auto industry once again struggling, the city of Detroit decided to use eminent domain to destroy nearly 1,500 homes and 140 businesses in order to build a new General Motors assembly plant.

RET HINKING T HE SYST EM Academic research into future manufacturing largely outlines the idea of adaptable and modular manufacturing systems which are built in order to change with market conditions. While no physical prototypes of these systems exist on a commercial scale, early design explorations iterated on the potential design and configuration of such systems. However, the design project seeks to speculate a step further in the future, exploring robotic additive manufacturing programmatically transformed into a vertical manufacturing process.

Usable and unusable, occupied and abandoned, pristine and dirty, these are dichotomies often used as the defining language for Urban Ruins.

Detroit, once upon a time a golden city, is abundant with the scars and remnants of its manufacturing past.

Interestingly, these ruins often exist in a state between the dichotomies -- unused and abandoned, yet longing for occupants; damaged and dirty, yet beautiful and whole.

This vellum exploration seeks to examine the Modern Cult of Ruins through the design of a chair which exists on a thin rope, carefully balancing as both a completed ruin and pristine decay.

A T T R A C T I O N T O RU I N S In the wake of the Detroit’s decline, a new tourism business arose – the industry of ruin tourism. Over the past two decades new interest has arisen in exploring Detroit as the de facto capital of urban decay. Visitors throughout the year flock guided tours of the city, seeking to peek inside the city’s great abandoned monuments such as the Packard Automotive Plant, Michigan Central Train Depot, and Vanity Ballroom to witness the devastation firsthand. This attraction to ruins served as the inspiration for a design explorating seeking to design furniture that fits within the cult of ruins.
