Promising Youth Athlete Lance Yassay, MITS Indoor Jump Champion

lacing 2nd with a PR of 6”7 at the MITS State meet, Lance began high jumping in the 5thgrade at Our Lady of Sorrows under the mentorship of Coach Nick Ellis. Throughout Middle school he competed in AAU track placing in the district and regional events to qualifying for the National AAU Junior Olympics each year from 20092011. In 2009 & 2010 Lance placed 5th and 7thin the country. Scheduling conflict kept Lance out of the 2011 AAU Junior Olympic Games. Lance is currently a 16 year old Sophomore attending Novi Catholic Central High school. Working under Coach Tony Magni, in 2012 as a freshman he competed at the varsity level placing in the top two in all meets. Lance won the Oakland County Freshman invitational while setting a new freshman record with a jump of 6’3”.

For the past several years Lance has trained in the off season with the Ann Arbor Track Club (AATC) under the guidance and support of Coach Joe Codrington. The support Lance received from the entire AATC staff helped him to achieve numerous goals including an indoor jump of 6’6” in 2013. Lance’s sister Jillian is an 8thgrader at Our Lady of Sorrows and will attend Mercy HS next fall. Jillian high jumps, shot puts and runs relays. Additionally, she plays basketball & swims but seems to enjoy her defensive and goalie roles on the soccer team the most.

enderson Dottin is the Barbados Record Holder in the High Jump, soaring up to seven feet four inches. He has been consistently the best high jumper from Barbados for a decade or more but also excelled in other areas as a teenager. Henderson’s first love was basketball and he was a prolific junior player for Barbados and was good enough to play for the senior national team while still a junior. He continued to excel in basketball until someone told him that he could be a really good high jumper if he worked at it. Henderson followed this advice and was soon competing for Barbados and winning medals at Carifta Games, CAC Games and Junior Pan American Games. Henderson won a scholarship to the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) and attained All-American honors there as he became one of the best high jumpers at this fine institution and has been competing as an elite athlete after graduating. His ability has taken him all over the US, various places in the Caribbean and to European countries like France, Belgium, Italy, Ireland and Finland. The 2012 track and field season saw Henderson finishing 3rd at the Jamaica Invitational and at the 2012 Drake Relays. Henderson has been able to parlay his ability and talent to the modeling arena and recently did a basketball appearance to be a “body double” for Dewayne Wade of the NBA. Henderson’s journey continues as his management is in contract negotiations with a footwear and apparel company.

Road to Track Scholarship to college is if they were participating on a high school team. Not so. As a parent who has a student track athlete and who is heavily involved in youth track, we made this discovery when we decided that high school track was not the place for our athlete. In high school track, we found that the focus is more about winning. When a stand-out student athlete need specialized training to focus on the event that he/she is good at, club sports is a great option. Most club sports have dedicated coaches who know the value of training a student athlete to his/her potential and are astutely aware of the opportunity to earn a college scholarship. Since joining a club sport, our athlete has received offer letters and has had several college coaches casually ask about his college plans. With the cost of college these Most parents aren’t aware that college coaches recruit days, I can tell you our athlete is feeling pretty confident athletes they’ve watched develop through AAU and US- with his college future. ATF youth meets and championships. It has long been thought that the only way for a student athlete, in any Michael K sport, but specifically track, to gain an athletic scholarship Track Club Parent
