Buckeye Kosher Buckeye Kosher, operated by the Vaad Ho-ir of Columbus, is a 501c3 non-profit agency that has been servicing the needs of the kosher-keeping community and clients who desire kosher certification for more than 30 years. The organization is run in a partnership between a rabbinic board and a lay-board of community members. The organization aims to educate consumers and clients in how to reach their goal of becoming kosher and receiving kosher certification for their production. BuckeyeKosher is on a mission to raise the profile of kosher offerings in Columbus and to bring more options to the kosher eating consumer. Our belief is that Columbus’ Jewish growth depends on it. For more information about Kosher certification contact us at: (614) 654-1645 or info@buckeyekosher.org For kosher news and alerts follow us on twitter @BuckeyeKosher or at our website: BuckeyeKosher.org

Breaking the cycle

of homelessness in Columbus is the responsibility of the entire community. The Community Shelter Board is a planning and funding board that has been addressing the problem of homelessness in Columbus and Franklin County, Ohio for the past 15 years. The effort has been successful in creating a comprehensive system that helps prevent homelessness, meets the immediate needs of homeless people, and offers ongoing services to keep people from returning to shelters. In 1986, Mel Schottenstein and Nancy Jeffrey worked together with the City of Columbus, the Franklin County Board of Commissioners, the United Way of Central Ohio, the Columbus Chamber of Commerce, the Metropolitan Area Church Council, the ADAMH Board, The Columbus Foundation and the Leo Yassenoff Foundation to fashion a collective community response to homelessness. Mel was known to say that he would not accept any situation that left a man, woman or child without food or shelter. At today’s festival we are collecting gently used linens and towels for the new Family Shelter. If you didn’t bring linens or towels today, please consider dropping them off at 595 Van Buren Dr., Columbus, OH 43223.

Our Pitmaster Max McGarity

Back for a third year as our pitmaster is Max McGarity. Max has won multiple awards for his smoking skill and has competed at events, such as the Columbus Jazz and Rib Fest, Canal Winchester Ribs Festival and Food Truck Festival. He has been featured in 614 magazine and on Fox28 news, Business First, and the Dispatch. Last year he opened a (non-kosher) restaurant in the Brewery District, Smoked on High BBQ, to rave reviews and many accolades. McGarity smokes his meat low and slow for 12-14 hours. For 350 lbs of ribs for this year’s festival, that is a lot of time by the smoker.

Our Musical Guest

The Route 161 Happy Wanderers In 2017 the Route 161 Happy Wanderers traveled more than 5,000 miles and nine states to play their original blend of traditional German bier garten, klezmer and polka with contemporary popular music. Vince Bellomo (Drums) formed the band to harken back to his fond memories playing with his multi-instrumental Hungarian grandfather. Jason Greenwald (Guitar/Keys), a 30year seasoned musician with a side hobby of public yodeling. Dan Wolcott (Accordion) is multi-lingal and does vocals in six or more languages, including klezmer songs in Yiddish. Dan attended Yiddish New York in 2017 and has often performed at the Wexner Heritage Village. Rt161’s bread and butter is the Oktoberfest season, where they mix the traditional and the unexpected, and the evening is never complete without Di Mezinke. The trio will keep the festival fun and lively, where dance may ensue especially appreciated by grandparents and grandchildren alike.

70 Faces of Israel is an annual series that brings Israeli expert speakers to Columbus to shed light on little-known aspects of Israeli society and culture.

FIGHTING DISCRIMINATION:

THE STORY OF ISRAELI JEWS FROM ARAB LANDS (MIZRACHI) Discrimination is painful, both to society and to the individuals enduring its harmful effects. In Israel, the fight for equality has long been taking place in the spheres of public law and political decision-making. Using the story of the Israeli Jews of Arab lands (Mizrachi) who have long been marginalized in Israel, the interesting new path of using civil claims for damages to obtain equality will be introduced.

r Professo

on Yifat Bitt

Professor Yifat Bitton, legal academic and social activist for equality specializing in anti-discrimination law and critical-egalitarian theory of law, will present her own perspective on this development, based on her experience as the legal scholar and as the activist who developed this pioneering legal advocacy tool, aimed at enhancing human rights protection in Israel.

Bitton has been shortlisted twice for Israel’s Supreme Court (2016, 2018), making history as the youngest woman to ever appear on the list and the first woman of Mizrachi descent. She is an associate professor at Striks Law school in the College of Management and an Israel Institute visiting scholar at NYU, holds a Ph.D. from Hebrew University and an LL.M. from Yale University Law School, and spent a year as a Fulbright fellow at Harvard University Law School. The co-founder and chair of “Tmura,” The Israeli Clinical Centre for Equality, Bitton has won a number of social and legal awards and prizes.
