When it comes to concepts or research, numbers it can be easy to get lost in the data and forget a building is actually made up of stories.

The experiences of people in need, who have found themselves becoming a statistic, should be what determines the success of a space meant to heal.

TheLAYER Community Center provides EXTEND a powerful foundation and a valuable resource to families within the Austin community who are experiencing hardship resulting in loss of home, job, or financial stability. Connecting families with a support system EXTEND through intergenerational community involvement, life skills education, job training and proactive childcare, can result in resetting the trajectory of a family’s story.

Laura, a 32 year old mother to her 4 year old daughter, Carmen, finally admits to herself that she can’t do it on her own anymore.

She had heard about the new Community and Resource Center off of Aldrich Street and the fact that they offered daycare assistance and job training, but it wasn’t until today that she realized help was truly something they could not survive without.

Suspended artwork that peeked through the projected facade seemed to be showcased by two glass walls completing the entry foyer. Laura looked ahead to the reception desk and friendly faces waiting to greet the next visitor.

Looking through to the interior atrium, Laura could see the warm glow of light and soft wood that reminded her of home. She watched as men were met by case workers in comfortable chairs placed in discrete areas that highlighted the privacy of the conversation, while all generations used the central stairs to focus, socialize and access the second floor.

Daycare

In the courtyard, the community made by surrounding apartments came to life. Laura watched as children played while their mother looked on from a serene spot near a central fountain. She smiled when she saw two spirited staff members visiting near a bench outside of what seemed to be their break room.

On the second floor, Laura remembered how much she enjoyed creating collages as a child.

The natural stone that covered two of the walls coupled with floor to ceiling windows fostered creative collaboration she could feel.

Laura thought back to the dread she had felt at the thought of entering a resource center, admitting to being in need and confessing she was not able to take care of her daughter on her own. Knowing there was a place where she could gain community, education, and skills in her career, health and parenting left her promising she would be back on Monday to begin the programs the Center offered her. It had been a full day of humble realizations for Laura, but she couldn’t remember the last time she felt so empowered.

After her daughter suffered an ankle injury, Laura was relieved to find a community clinic that emphasized intergenerational care, active living and transparency for her and her daughter’s new trajectory in life.

Glancing down the halls that offered several degrees of care, she enjoyed the ease of navigation and open outdoor courtyard that brought the outside in.

To her delight, Laura learned she was able to exercise at the gym where Carmen was receiving care for her ankle. Views of nature brings positive distraction to difficult therapy sessions.

As Laura navigated through the clinic, she was comforted by the constant view of nature through the transparent walls that surrounded the courtyard.

The atmosphere reminded Laura of a small community, in which each part depended on the other.

R.I.S.E Department Prototype College Station, TX The Resilient In Surge Emergency Department responds to both normal circumstances that demand an efficient, patient-centered Emergency Department, as well as becomes the ideal location for Surge capacity emergency services during viral outbreaks.

Understanding the flow and hierarchy of services within an emergency department required hands-on knowledge, so our team conducted interviews with medical personnel amidst COVID surge conditions for conceptual gaming practices.

Surge Circulation A: Elongated vestibule provides safety to wait for screening before entering the facility B: Chambers allow for initial screenings through questions, vitals and temperature C1: Non-infectious patients are diverted to main lobby for normal registration C2: Potentially infectious patients register at the kiosk for further examination D: Patients are provided with a quick consult to identify level of care E1: Patients with mild/no symptoms are able to take a rapid test and exit E2: Patients with more severe symptoms are taken back to the exam rooms to get further treatment
