Throughout my time in college, I consistently took on the role of a concept designer, driven by goals of identifying questions, isolating variables, and constructing logical frameworks capable of adapting to change. In my earlier years, my approach was rooted in viewing projects solely from my own perspective. However, as I gained more experience, I recognized the value of stepping outside my comfort zone and into someone else’s shoes. By considering alternative viewpoints, I discovered that a broader perspective is crucial not just for personal growth but for societal problemsolving.

I firmly believe that addressing complex issues in society necessitates diligent thought, qualitative and quantitative analysis, and a human-centric approach. My recent project involving the Harlem African Burial Ground epitomizes this belief. Despite not sharing the community’s background, I approached the project with humility and an open mind. During interactions with community members and organizations, I focused on actively listening to their desire for their stories to be told, their need for visibility, and their aspirations for growth. While I may never fully understand the experiences of those whose ancestors were enslaved, my ability to embrace diverse perspectives and ask uncomfortable questions became a driving force in the project. I encountered challenges, such as the EDC’s opportunistic outlook overshadowing the community’s humanistic desires. When presenting the project to the community, I aimed to highlight the importance of visibility and suggested that growth could stem from a collaborative effort between the community and the EDC. In applying for BCGR, I see an alignment between my experiences and values and the qualities you seek. My background in architecture, coupled with a commitment to holistic problem-solving, makes me confident in my ability to contribute to BCGR's Strategy Practice. The emphasis on fresh perspectives, collaborative teamwork, and a passion for tackling tough problems resonates with my approach, and I am eager to bring my unique outlook to your company.

How can we develop a non-strictly educational approach to engage children with the forest, ensuring minimal intrusion into the historical forest, and placing a strong emphasis on experiential learning?

In what ways, including spatial design and other (such as policies, services, events), can we help the client facilitate and enable innovation?
