This project was a design for an urban farm and community center in the in Copenhagen. The concept that dove the project was a community garden.

Regularly found at ground level, an urban community garden ends up being blocked from sunlight most of the year. Therefor the proposal was to lift the garden up into the light allowing then a space below in which a more controlled urban farming operation could live.

koreatown elementary school This project was a design for an elementary school in Koreatown, Los Angeles. This studio was focused system integration and a general understanding of how a building is put together. the concept here was to take the classroom up off the ground floor to allow for a continuous flow of public space from the main entry, into the court yard and off to the playground fields.

This building has a max height of 32 ft and 2 stories. The area on the first floor is 37,332 Ft ² and the second is 26,820 Ft ² for a total of 64,152 Ft ². A typical classroom is 960 Ft ² and the kindergarten is 3584 Ft ². Both are classified as E for educational. The assembly program, the library and the multipurpose room, are 2443 Ft ² and 8184 Ft ² and are classified A-3. For kindergarten complex fire separation is 65 ft in the north, 164 ft in the south, 34 ft in the east, and 115 ft in the west. This means that all walls are unrated and in limited in the opening ratings.

The classrooms building can be Type 3 B construction for a E building which allows for At=14,500 Ft ² and three stories at a 55 ft max height. Therefore I will pick Type 3 B construction based on the requirements for the Education portion of this building. Being the most restricting and the majority of the building square footage it is the best choice all for the entire construction.

fredens park youth center This project was a youth center for the community surrounding the park. In doing so we spent time interviewing some of the local kids at a nearby school.

A concern that was a constant theme from the young teens was that they didn’t feel like they had their space in centers of this sort. Therefore the concept of my design was to create barrier in the form of a large poche wall that would serve as a separation between the different age groups. Additionally this poche housed the circulation and core program clearing up all other space to the primary function of the building.
