My name is Daniel Lawrence. Originally from Southern California, I recently moved to Denver to be closer to the mountains and to experience a new city. I have been working in architecture offices for 3.5 years.

During this time, I have worked on a wide array of different projects from single family custom homes to offices to large multifamily mixed use projects. Through the development of the drawings and renderings for these projects, I have gained a broad exposure to the interworkings of the design process. I have had the opportunity to take several projects from a concept drawing through the permitting process and into construction. Doing so has allowed me to learn what it takes to follow through on a project from beginning to end. Having spent my time working in a variety of firms with a wide range of clients and coworkers, I have learned to be flexible and adaptable.

In addition to architectural design, I am very passionate about rendering and photography. I find them to be an integral part of the design process and make every effort to gain as much exposure to both as I can. Aside from their ability to convey complex ideas in a more tangible way, both mediums require us to look at architecture through a much more personal lens. This allows us the ability to better understand the things that we create, while connecting the spaces we design back to the end user. Whether is it is a rendering done before construction or photographs of a completed project, rendering and photography allow us to see the impact of our decisions more clearly, so that we can make better decisions in the future. I have been fortunate to have been surrounded by very creative people throughout my schooling and into my design career, inspiring me to continue to develop my skills in graphics and representation.

Aside from architecture, I am a passionate mountain biker and head to the mountains every chance I get.

Having spent several years as a bike shop mechanic, I have grown to be very technically minded and bring this enthusiasm for the details to my work in all fields.

TRIBUNE BUILDING The Tribune Newspaper moved their printing production out of town several years ago, leaving this warehouse vacant. We were then tasked with repurposing the facility into 30 work/live units. With it’s location in a commercial zone, the project required much back and forth with the city planners to create a flexible residential/ commercial development that would also meet the city’s zoning regulations.

Role in project: I began this project when I first started at Ten Over. I started with developing asbuilt drawings, later getting to design the building and then render it to life, all while researching and implementing the applicable codes and city regulations. This provided me with the experience of starting a project at the beginning and working through entitlements. Inevitably, the client’s needs changed, requiring the project to be restarted and sent though the entitlements process another couple times. Thus, I developed a substantial knowledge base about how to get a project entitled and permitted, and also about the dynamics of the client-architect relationship.

VISALIA TECH OFFICE This project is a new 30,000 sf office building in Visalia, California. A developer came to us with the opportunity to design an office building for a software company looking to move a different building.

Role in project: I was tasked with an accelerated timeline to design and render a concept for the exterior of this building to land our firm the job.

Within 24 hours I had to flush out a floor plan, design the exterior of the building, and generate imagery to convey the design to the client. Once the design was approved and our firm secured the job, I began to figure out the details of the project by doing code research, creating 3D models and the rest of the necessary drawings.

I held and participated in meetings, working with consultants to coordinate the design as intended.

LEFF STREET HOUSE This house is a proposed addition to a current back house in a deep lot in San Luis Obispo.

The lot is within one of San Luis Obispo’s many historic districts. This proved difficult when the city’s historic ordinances clashed with the owners want for a modern aesthetic.

Project Role: This was the first project that I ran myself. I met with the clients to develop a design that best fit their needs, and also fit within the city’s parameters. The city’s height dependent setbacks, as well as its stringent historic district guidelines made this a difficult site, but in the end I came up with a design that both the clients and city could agree on. I managed the project and the budget while working with the city officials to get through the entitlements process. After much deliberation, the design was approved and is now moving on to permitting.
