A Letter from the Editor, Daniel Lang

Hey A-Tech, My, it has been an eventful month! Our first major event (RTC) is less than a month away! Especially for new members, try to get to those RTC Preps; by the end, you’ll know what to expect and how to be amazing as can be! The website, too (at atechkeyclub.weebly.com), is being updated weekly. Send me any suggestions you have! This month, we focus on our spirited first week of Key Club, some Opportunity Village volunteering, and preparations for RTC 2013! In addition, the Events Calendar is jam-packed with even more awesome things, and we’ve more diverse articles than ever! Here’s to our biggest month, yet!

“Though no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending. – Carl Bard

Welcome Back!

The school year is back in motion, and that means Key Club has returned in full swing! Meetings will always be Thursdays, right after school, in the Lecture Hall, unless otherwise stated. We wanted to hear from YOU, so this is what we got:

“My name is Mark Paragas and this is my second year as a member of Key Club. I want to give my thoughts about Key Club. Personally I think Key Club is really fun, and incoming freshmen should really join the club. Key Club is really a wonderful thing to have as a club; it gives people the time to meet new people while doing charity work. I have been to Opportunity Village so far. It was really fun and very nice to do community service. What I did there was take down lights from trees. Key Club also does RTC. RTC is very fun to go to. At RTC, you get to learn a lot of things about Key Club. RTC is also to meet different high schools and take part in the spirit competition. I enjoy how fun it is to be a Key Club member, and I am really looking forward to working on more events in Key Club and meeting wonderful people that also enjoy Key Club.” - Mark Paragas

“From a junior’s point of view and his experience with Key Club so far, I have to say it’s pretty AWESOME!!! Key Club is one of THE clubs that are essential to join! It allows you to interact and help out with the community and actually DO something. Park-Cleanups, RTC, Fall Rally, are just some of the few things that I’ve had the chance to participate in and I don’t regret it at all. Also, I have met some amazing people so far, some from other high schools in the area, some from a different state, even some people from Hawaii! I’ve had a ton of fun in Key Club, and I’m still having fun! Joining Key Club was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. <3” - Connor Jang

Three Cheers for Key Club! Key Club at Freshman Orientation

A-Tech’s Spirit Event in the SAC 09/09/13 “During the second week of school, our LTG, Christopher Bui, along with dedicated member, Daniel Cruz, and the Key Club board joined together and cheered our hearts out in the Student Activities Center during lunch. Our spirit could be heard from one end of the SAC to the other, and people became intrigued about who we were and what we stood for. Key Club is family for many of us, and united, we are the face of spirit, leadership, and the change we seek in the world. We don’t cheer just to cheer, we cheer because we love our organization and everything it stands for, and we definitely showcased that in the SAC.” - Halley Darwin (President)

08/20/13 “Freshman Orientation was our first opportunity to meet the new students coming into A-Tech, so we made sure to recruit there! For weeks during the summer break, the board had been preparing posters, pamphlets, videos, you name it! On the big day, we set up our base – two tables brought together under a white cloth. Above, we decked it out with a tri-fold, t-shirts, posters, flyers, and more! Most importantly, we made sure to showcase Jessica’s recruitment video – featuring Key Club service events, RTC, Fall Rally, and us – the board. Present at the event were board officers like Floyd Ngov and Steffi Marie, general members like Gabby de Vera, and even our LTG Bui. As A-Tech Ambassadors, too, Halley Darwin, Justin White, Hung Le, and Kaili Cannon, Brandon Owens, and I also told our freshmen groups about Key Club! We presented ourselves formally, as there’d be time to show off our spirit later. By the end, we were able to gain the interest of many soon-to-be members, and that was only the beginning!” -

Daniel Lang (Bulletin Editor)

First Meeting of the 2013-2014 Year

09/12/13 “Thursday, September 12th, 2013 marks the day we had our first meeting. I was pleasantly surprised with how many new faces I saw! We commenced our meeting by introducing RTC, Fall Rally, and upcoming service events. To put the icing on the cake, we wrapped up the meeting with the “How Do You Feel!?” cheer and the Lecture Hall was encompassed with spirit and the promise of a great year for Key Club!” - Halley Darwin (President)

Why YOU should go to RTC 2013!

Payment Notice “Hey, Key Clubbers!! OMG start of the school year, how exciting? As Treasurer, I have two main jobs: making sure you guys pay your dues on time and setting up fundraisers. Major dues right now are RTC and Membership. RTC dues are due this Tuesday the 17th. It’s really early because of division stuff. If you don’t have it in by then, you won’t be able to go… RTC is one of the biggest and most fun events of the year, so everyone should consider going. Membership is due October 3rd, even if you are going to RTC. For fundraisers right now, nothing is set in stone. However the rest of the board and I have a lot of ideas. These include dodge ball games, fundraising nights at restaurants, selling ice cream at lunch, and selling candy bars. There will be more details later!!” - Brandon Owens (Treasurer)

Saturday of Service A-Tech Key Club Brightens up Opportunity Village 09/14/13 “The members of Advanced Technologies Academy spent their Saturday morning donating time to Opportunity Village’s Saturday of Service on September 14. Opportunity Village is an amazing organization that helps people with intellectual or other disabilities find careers, further creativity, meet friends, and integrate with our community. This not-for-profit charity, established in 1954, has become the largest private Nevadan reintegration program. It aids over 3,000 people every year with a variety of activities that show how the intellectually disabled are truly capable of living a normal life. The A-Tech Key Club contributed to the charity by removing lights from trees in the Magical Forest and redecorating for the first annual HallOVeen. Every year Opportunity Village runs the Magical Forest during the holiday season with 100% of the proceeds donated to services to help the disabled and their families. This year, they just started a similar event that will occur in October with a Halloween theme instead. Halley Darwin, Gatsby Darwin, Daniel Lang, Anderson Leung, KC Cannon, Rici, Nickolas Scipione, Davin Suzuki, Jacob Schmit, Mark Paragas, and Benjamin Stevens cut down the old lights and ornaments that covered the trees and applied a more seasonal atmosphere. Newcomers learned much more about Key Club as we bonded over movies, music, and plans for the future. Topping off this day of new friends and assisting others, we took a spectacular train ride through the village, where our group saw the true majesty of the Magical Forest in progress. With the influx of another batch of members, our first event displays the spirit and contributions this year will bring.” - Nickolas Scipione

“Now this is my first article I’ve written, and I felt it was a time to give it a try. So today was my first Key Club event, and I’ve never been more excited! When I got there I was met and greeted by Halley and Daniel. I’ve never been to Opportunity Village before, so it was a first, all right! Daniel and I got assigned the job of “Professional Christmas Light Remover” we commenced in removing all of the lights. During that time, he further introduced himself and told me a lot more about Key Club. He told me all the fun events we’d get to do! It sure was a long conversation because certainly enough, two hours have already passed; we put the new Halloween lights on the tree, and we moved on to picking up all the other cut Christmas lights. Meeting up with everyone else that came to the help, it was a nice to have some good ole’ chats. I could see that a lot of work was still needed at Opportunity Village, and I cannot wait for the finished result! At the end of the day, we ended up riding the train, which was a fun closer! I’m officially hooked with Key Club. ” - Benjamin Stevens
