Based within Gosport, the overarching brief within this project is ‘Coastal Resilience’; with rising climates, sea levels and pollution, our waterways are in urgent need of attention. With a rich heritage and relation to war, Gosport is still fighting, economically and through climatic effects. Research shows how small seaside towns will be more seasonal, meaning tourism is lacking, proving worse effects on the local economy and population. This will further low wages and unemployment, and with a lack of educational facilities within the area, people will become out-commuters, ultimately utilising Gosport as a hostel to sleep before leaving again. Piercing through the coastal lines, this studio has collaborated to reinforce the suburbs, defending and blending the sea with the land. Furthering developments within smaller groups, we are able to formulate a rich masterplan with various strategies to nurse Gosport back to health.

Due to the stark comparison in crime rates between Portchester and Gosport, a site within this section could prove beneficial for the transition in improving crime rates. This would be done through having a building ambition as the driving force for Gosport. Bridging the areas would potentially be necessary.

• Dwelling typologies vary with number of storeys and the urban grid for orientation.

• Due to a high density living space from the inaccessible green space, urbanisation is high, meaning more storeys could be beneficial.

• The juxtaposition with the factories within a close radius highlight the inaccessible areas within the military base.

• Hard-pressed living makes it financially more difficult to rent, meaning apartments could be a beneficial typology for spatial efficiency.

Atop the leisure centre’s viewing tower above the common room, Mr. Carlson gazes into the distance to unveil what else there is within the landscape to explore. From this vantage point, he doesn’t just see the immediate landscape of the proposed masterplan, but also the interconnected network of other buildings from contributors within the collaborative masterplanning process, each playing a role in revitalising the hardpressed living and military areas. Working collaboratively within the interconnected network provides multiple functions for people to explore and enjoy to further enrich the culture, social integration and anticipation for what else is to come. The children are so excited about the newly found buildings and wish to explore them too, and so the family head out to catch a show at the theatre before making their way to the market along the beach front.

r. Carlson finds himself wanting to take another trip down to Gosport, where he finds that from bridging the gap between Fareham and Gosport, there are now so many means of transportation, each having their own benefits for preserving the ecology for the Sustainable Development Goals. His eagerness reflects the spirit and curiosity of Project Isthmus amongst the other urban developments. Developing one sector of the radial grid for the current architectural proposal, the Carlson’s come across the building plans and see that there are family flats available for a cost efficient price. Within seconds, before she knows it, captivated by the innovative design and building amenities, Mrs. Carlson has picked up the phone to enquire about booking a viewing and the children are jumping with excitement as they might have the chance to move into the place with all their new friends from the youth centre. second

eceiving a response with regards to the viewing, the family are eager to visit the accommodation for a tour. “It’s one thing to see the plans but to see it in person will be a whole

Rnew experience”, Mrs. Carlson exclaims with hope. As the family arrived to the dwelling, they were greeted by reception staff in the secure lobby who then took them to the room for viewing. Walking through the glistening, private courtyard for residents, Emma says, “just imagine all the memories we could make here”, whilst looking through the window to the other aspects of the landscape where her friends would be close, in a safe environment.

aking one final look at the building before making the ultimate decision whether to take the flat, the family take a moment to appreciate their surroundings in the sunset. They realised they have never spent this much time together before and within seconds they took the flat. They couldn’t have been happier. The kids could be in a healthy, safe social space with their friends while Mr. and Mrs. Carlson don’t have to worry about their whereabouts, relieving many parental stressors. Through having schemes such as this throughout the urban landscape, hard-pressed living can be reduced, society can become a community and people can become healthier, developing great aspirations for the future of themselves and the Earth. Afew months go by and it is time for the Carlson’s to move into their new home. The spacious living room filled with natural light welcomes them warmly.

Emma gets excited about her new storage space for her art supplies so she can become the aspiring artist she had longed to be while Alex uses the various options the site offers to figure out exactly what he wants to achieve. The glow in their faces reflects on the parents’; “To new beginnings”, they all say, celebrating with a new community and space to live while they come back together as the family they always wanted to be.

With a bit of care and nurture, the grass on both sides, is now green.
