With this portfolio I would like to show some of the works realized with my group mates during my academic career. With a selection of representative images from my projects I would like to convey the commitment and passion behind each design choice, always taken mediating between the engineering and architectural aspects of the buildings. Each project has been developed in team, with the help of Bim design.

DANIELE BERTUZZI - PORTFOLIO

The project is part of the former AerMacchi area in Varese, which in the past hosted a great reality of the Italian post-war aeronautical field.

The idea is to reopen to the city a large space dismissed for many years. The area will be able to give value to the town of Varese, known as city-garden of Lombardy. In fact, the new space will host different services and a more residential function inside the green. Being Varese a polycentric city, the area in question will be added to the different poles scattered throughout the territory.

The project consists of 4 towers with a height of 13 floors. These towers will be linked at the base by a platform housing the services for inhabitants and for the people using the outside of the area, the green spaces, commercial spaces and refreshments.

The buildings will have apartments of different sizes with services distributed in different floors. The green roof represents another common area, with cultivable spaces for the inhabitants.

The elevations are very regular, carefully designed to get the best light inside the apartments, which always have 2 views thanks to the module used. The modules fit one on top of the other in an L shape and are developed on two floors. | Masterplan ground floor |

The building has two vertical distribution elements, corresponding to which are located the laundry facilities.. The ground floor level will host services such as a restaurant, bar, a gym and a reading space.

Starting from the first floor, different size apartments are developed. Laterally we find double floor flats with access from the balcony. In the central part of the building there are the studios, which are accessed through the central corridor. These are developed on a single level and have a single view.

In this way, the elevations enjoy a particular regular play of full and empty spaces.

In order to avoid glare phenomena, movable shading systems have been designed, which also provide a more dynamic facade.

The structure is in reinforced concrete, with plate floors and load-bearing blocks.

These are flanked by load-bearing partitions that divide the apartments and contribute to the static strength of the floors.

The project area is located in Casatenovo, near Lecco, in Lombardy. The access is from Via Crotta and the area is enclosed to the south and east by private fenced properties with a much lower height than the lot. In the northen part of the area in consideration there is a green belt where construction is forbidden. .

The project foresees the construction of a secondary school within the lot evaluating a buffer strip in the north area of the same. The primary intention of the project was the creation of human scale spaces, creating integration between users and with the external environment. The translation of these requests into architecture was our goal: an architecture that dialogues with the outside, that is harmonized through the material, the color, the form, with the users. An architecture that welcomes and makes the inside a pleasant and comforting place.

At the design level, these objectives have been achieved with some technical solutions and guidelines: the use of intelligent and versatile materials; the right balance between opaque and transparent surfaces; a solid and completely safe structure, but which also testifies architectural choices; the favoring of natural lighting; a functional distribution scheme, simple but clear, which identifies precise but multipurpose rooms, so that all citizens can use them for purposes beyond school. Studies have also been made on the energy aspect: we wanted to use technologies that creates a system that saves more than it spends, then exploit alternative energy (photovoltaics), use mechanical ventilation to ensure a constant thermal comfort, have high performance doors and windows sealing cold and heat. | Render view from the open air gym space |

Given the conformation of the lot, which suggests a regular shape, it was decided to maintain a simple plan based on a functional distribution of environments. We designed the external spaces, green areas accessible and usable as recreational areas or sports. Even the main entrances have been traced in coordination with the road system, so that there would be no collapse points that could compromise the safety of road crossings, a particularly sensitive issue in the vicinity of services for children and young people. For this last point we refer to “kiss and drop” areas thanks to which parents can accompany their children to school in total safety without having to get out of the car. In addition to these, there are also private school parking areas for parents and teachers.

The building is designed in thermal zones in which the different uses required are distributed. This system allows to guarantee a thermal and plant efficiency during the daily life of the building preventing that unused areas contribute to heat loss.

For the area dedicated to teaching, a south-eastern exposure is preferred in order to provide plenty of light, especially in the morning hours when this area is more active. This allows the entry of the necessary light while minimizing the glass surfaces. The screens solve the problem of glare, especially in summer. | Ground floor |

The presence of a superficial water table, has led to the design of the foundations using a system of grade slab instead of grade beams, with a thickness of 30 cm. The blocks of the rises and the head walls of the transverse bodies have been thought of as load-bearing, then designed as reinforced concrete partitions 25 cm thick. The decks of the first floor and roof have steel beams of different thicknesses. The mesh is more dense in the transversal bodies. UPN closure beams have been foreseen at the end of the external balconies. In the longitudinal body instead, steel edge trusses have been provided.

The structure of the gym has its own characteristics. The pillars are in reinforced concrete 50x50 cm and the beams used are in laminated wood 35x20 cm and wooden trusses 170x50 cm.

The four elevations of the building define the true character. These openly declare the particular aspects of the project: the clean, linear language of the North and South elevations and the more playful, colorful language of the internal courtyards, characterized by the amusing pattern of the mullions of the sunshades that make them suitable environments for learning.

The project is located inside the historical Bracco area of Milan, at the gates of Via Rombon and Feltre district. The Masterplan is carefully studied, which is composed of a new park for the city, where small pavilions are located to support the pharmaceutical activity that will take place inside the area. The building of the new Headquarter arises through a series of lines that connect the center of the area to the accesses. The real peculiarity of the project is that the main square is located under the first floor of the building, an artificial element that contrasts with the natural elements of the area.

The concept of the building is to have the slabs of the various levels pierced and supported by the load-bearing structure, made by the stairs and the large and inclined concrete pillars that recall the game of Shanghai.

The offices are developed in open spaces, with phone boots where you can hold meetings or calls to avoid disturbing other workers.

The project of restoration and reuse of the former textile factory Cerry and Bourcard is located in the town of Carugo in the province of Monza and Brianza, near the railway station of the town. The goal is to donate a space to the city, which for years has been presented as a real barrier. Inside, there will be functions that will entirely serve the community. Following the survey on the geometry, material and degradation, the interventions to be carried out have been formulated, and concluded with the definition of the functions to insert inside the buildings. The project takes the name of Mestée, from the Milanese dialect “Craft” that recalls the art of manual labor of the craftsmen who once animated the area of intervention.

To keep this memory, the interventions that will be made will be minimal and essential. The functions will be entirely addressed to the community and will recall the artisan activities. | State of affair - axonometric view |

There will be workshops for the working of wood and iron, exhibition spaces and ateliers where you can express yourself through art. The rest of the spaces will be dedicated to classrooms for students of Carugo and neighboring municipalities. There will also be restaurant activities and green spaces accessible to all. The interiors will be integrated with disused containers, which will mark the environments and will host services to support the activities. The street front will be completely open to the city, with a new courtain wall made after removing the degraded finish originally present.

The project of the new cohousing CoLeaf is inserted in the area of Milano Bovisa, hosts different types of users, including mainly students from all over the world. The genesis of the building derives from the direction that connects the main entrance to the area from Via Lambruschini. A secondary entrance opened in the back of the area will allow the flow of people directed from the station to the buildings of the Politecnico di Milano. The building has been studied in a scrupulous and detailed way in its entirely dry envelope and in its energetic functioning.

Outside, the front on via Lambruschini is closed and aesthetically maintained as a continuum of the front generated by the pre-existing. Entering the courtyard of the complex, the feeling changes and something more innovative is discovered even in the elevations, plastered in white and interspersed with wooden elements and yellow ochre plaster around the windows. Inside the building there are private and shared spaces.

The idea is that on the ground floor are located all the social and collective activities that are needed in a cohousing, such as the laundry room, the kitchen and the gym, which in this case faces the street and is spread over two floors. The environments on the upper floors will be composed of single and double rooms, interspersed with some apartments with their own kitchen.

Structurally, the building has a xlam laminated wood structure, with a central core in reinforced concrete. The floors have been dimensioned on the basis of the maximum spans present in the buildings. Where the glue Lam was not sufficient, metal support profiles were inserted.

The UniMIND Campus masterplan begins its genesis from the pivotal elements inherited from the 2015 Expo. Given the central position of the project area, the Cardo and Decumano remain of fundamental importance, where in the intersection, the “Piazza Italia” opens. The Cardo culminates in the Lake Arena, with “Albero della Vita” and “Palazzo Italia”. The presence of the outer Loop, which surrounds the entire MIND area, guarantees the passage of the public bus line, which connects the center of Milan in a few minutes.

The library, as the emblem and heart of the campus, is positioned at the main entrance of the area. To respect the principle of visibility and recognizability. From the Decumano a diagonal Promenade is generated, it starts from “Piazza Italia” and culminates directly in the main entrance of the building, on which also opens the Campus Agora. The other buildings are designed with a free ground floor to promote visibility and to ensure the spatial permeability that connects the entire MIND project. The same continuity and permeability are found inside the building through the Public Forum on the ground floor, where the “life” of the users of the campus will take place.

The architectural and volumetric composition comes from a compact volume positioned in direct relation with the “Albero della Vita” and at the intersection of the main lines of our master plan. The pedestrian link leans on the building, embracing it on the whole south-eastern front, descending with a slight slope until reaching the Campus Square. The compact volume is divided in two: Auditorium and a multi-storey volume in close relationship with the Campus buildings that will host the actual Learning Center. The Campus Square is in front of the building, which is developed on two levels. The volume of the Library stands out to become an iconic element. The roof of the building generates an optical cone in the direction of the Lake Arena. This volume also becomes a landmark of the Campus clearly visible also from the highway, with a parallel direction. In order to stimulate the flows of entry to the Square and channel them towards the Promenade, the volume is cut and the pedestrian bridge skirts it with the descent ramp. The bridge is integrated with the building both structurally and architecturally, it is infact camouflaged with the terraces/ balconies projecting to the south-east façade screening system, elements also designed as an energy strategy according to the internal function and to the orientation. In order to guarantee a good natural lighting, also to the most internal areas, a large central cavedium is designed.

The library embraces the Forum and is divided into 4 main floors of 8 meters in height, which correspond to the internal subdivision into the four macro-categories of the university faculties, which are all distributed around the central Forum, placed in continuity with the Atrium of the building and with the and with the Agora. Each faculty zone is equipped with its own reference sector, while, on the ground floor there is a unified reference and an information point. These functions have been designed and strategically placed in the building so that they can be reached such as to be reached by a single automated elevator of books, which draws directly from the automated storage in the basement and distributes them for all the floors in height.

All the thematic macro-categories are equipped on the south-east side with large balconies accessible from each floor for library users.

To accentuate the concept of transparency, openness to the outside and make the most of the natural light available, it was it was decided to use a fully glazed envelope.

In addition, the design intent is to highlight the volumes of the Library, the Learning Commons and in particular the horizontal scanning of the four main floors above ground that correspond to the functions attributed to the interior, marking the profile of the slabs while maintaining the same thickness of 1m. This is highlighted especially in the evening hours when the building “lights up”, showing itself as a “lantern” that illuminates the entire Campus, clearly visible and recognizable even from outside MIND and from the highway.

At the same time, it was decided to design a transparent envelope with a purely vertical scan, to emphasize the sense of verticality of the building upwards. Moreover, in order to agree with the technological choices related to the façade construction system, a modular façade design has been arranged, with a constant pitch of the vertical elements, marking the main scan every 3 m.

The structure of the complex is a mix of reinforced concrete, steel and precast concrete.

Inside the library there are many open spaces and there is therefore the need to have very large spans between the various pillars and a freedom in plan. For these reasons, the main structure adopted for the library is in reinforced concrete with bidirectional plate floors, lightened with polyethylene spheres. These are supported by circular section pillars and load-bearing blocks in reinforced concrete, with bracing and structural stiffening functions, inside of which are located the lifts, services and fire escapes. The roofs, at a structural level, differentiate the three volumes of which the Learning Center is composed. The lowest volume consists of a flat roof in reinforced concrete; the highest one of an inclined roof formed by a spatial reticular beam in metal carpentry; the auditorium volume of a precast roof in honeycomb concrete. In some portions of the building, where it was not possible to design pillars due to architectural issues, the support for the floors is replaced by metal tie rods tied to the roof. The library volume also has a large overhang. In this case the structure will have to be made of metal carpentry.
