“A building can evoke laughter and joy or can elicit tears and sadness. It has the power to instill fear and anxiety, or help spark conversation and deep thought. The beauty in architecture helps us see, hear, smell, taste, and touch in new ways creating unforgettable experiences.”

Urban Imagination
A215 Architectural Design Theory 2
Orange Coast College
Fall 2016
Advisor: Rose Anne Garcia Kings
Project duration: 1 week
Skills: Hand Sketching, Physical Modeling, Photoshop
A recreation of San Francisco a spectacular city in California. This project began with the creation of an underlying grid pattern using intricateline line weights and shapes. This grid pattern gave constraints and informed the image placement. Cut outs from a magazine were then placed onto the grid patter to design a collage. Inspiration was drawn from the lines and shapes to inform my physical model that was placed on top of the collage. This transformed into my personal Urban Imagination.

William Smith's "Strata Identified by Organized Fossils,” inpired the concept of a marine exo skelloton. The site was Batiquitos Lagoon in Carlsbad, California a coastal wetland and estuary, home to many wildlife and plant species. A site analysis was conducted which identified the problem. The site became a drylands area due to the restriction of tidal flushing caused by the construction of a nearby bridge. This led to the depopulation of wildlife and plantlife. In order to help restoration, The Lago was proposed. This museum and conservation center aimed at promoting social awareness of drylands, educating people on the local wildlife, and providing funding through visitor donations.

Flow, energy, and human connection are what inspires the artist “Nuge,” to craft such captivating artwork. His art is a rebellion to his architectural background. He creates organic forms of wood that are in stark contrast to the hard lines and rigid nature of the built enviornment. “Nuge” was in need of an aditional dwelling unit where he was free to formulate his masterpeices without distractions. The ADU will be placed just outside his residence In Costa Mesa, California. This would serve his purpose as an art studio and guest living space. Advancing this idea of flow and energy which manifest a genuine human connection, this project incorperates those elements through the use of organic structural forms. The floor plans and facade are round and smooth which are the complete opposite of what “Nuge” describes architecture to be. This project would serve it’s purpose as an art studio and guest living space which advances “Nuge’s” artistic vision.

This class was divided into six groups, all competing against each other to propose an urban plan to investors to redevelop a deteriorating city. Our group's name was the Family Project and the goal was to revive Elmwood, a fictional city, by providing a community centered take on the town’s historic preservation. This project aimed to create a vibrant, eco-friendly environment that met the needs of its residents and tourists. There were challenges facing Elmwood's future and fear sparked uncertainty. Our team had five members each with different roles. My role was the site planner and team manager. I determined what type of building was needed and where it went on the site. I created the 3D model you see on this cover image. After thoughful consideration we came up with our project, Mod.c.

One of my best friends used to be in a band called Beach on Mars. They were dedicated and would practice for hours together after high school classes. There were six band members. A bassist, a guitarist, a drummer, a keyboard player, a flute player and a singer, who is my close friend. One day, they invited me to go listen to them play in downtown Santa Ana, during the summer. I always enjoyed listening to them. To thank them for their performance, I decided to paint this artpiece and gift it to them. Time passed, they grew up and all went their separate ways. The performance I saw, became the last song. All their memories were left in this piece.

Experimenting with mixed media leads to unique creations. This design process began by studying a chess board and its components. Next, the pieces and the board were sketched alternating with both hands to create this still life. Photoshop was then used to alter the color. Lastly Pixlar, a photo application was used to add the border that surrounds the image. Beauty can be found in the game pieces and the game itself. Sometimes the king can deceive and all the pawns flock to help the king's deception.
