STEM HIGH SCHOOL

A flexible design will accommodate the rapidly changing (and not yet known) trends in education. Designated rooms are equipped with operable walls to further provide flexibility in the school. Flexibility will enable the District to pivot quickly if a new direction in instruction is necessary.

The program is organized around four pathways, Advanced Engineering and manufacturing, Environmental Science and Agriculture, Biomedical, and computer science. The Advanced Engineering and Manufacturing pathway is located on the first floor to allow direct access to the fabrication lab. This program is organized so the student develops their idea in the classroom, they move on to the adjacent labs to further develop the idea. Next they move on to prototyping using the 3D printing and laser cutting stations that are located between the two labs. Once the idea has been refined they move on to the fabrication lab to build the idea. The final step is showcasing the work in the large Discovery Center or outdoor testing area. The other three pathways have a very similar process.

The architecture consists of a series of concrete, wood, and glass masses. A continuous metal black ribbon flows throughout the architecture wrapping around the masses to unify the entire building. The glass mass is offset from the black ribbon, coming out of the ribbon in some locations and tucking back into the ribbon in other locations depending on the exposure to the sun.

The main concept of the new school revolves around the idea that the new school will be open, flexible, with a focus on indoor and outdoor learning.

This project gives the students a variety of environments for learning. Indoor and outdoor learning space, large classrooms and small group spaces, and break out spaces throughout the campus encourage all types of learning.

The program is organized to create three levels of security. The main entrance and public conference room are at the first level of security that allows the public into the building. The main office area, cadet training room, and interview rooms are at the second level of security that only allows police officers, people being interviewed, and people being detained. Evidence storage and processing are under this level of security as well. The final level of security is level three. These spaces can only be accessed by members of the police force. This program includes break room, locker rooms, and fitness center with access to a rooftop running track. The blue perforated screen the surrounds the building provides security and shade for officers exercising on the rooftop running track.

The Police Headquarters houses the Police for a school district in California. This unique project required a complex laying of security throughout the program and continues on throughout the architecture. Fenestrations are designed to provide natural daylighting throughout the building with not direct line of site into the building.

The Police headquarters is part of a project to bring all district facilities onto one site create a campus like feel.

The challenge for this building was to be a fortress for the police force but feel inviting to the public. A secure parking lot is located on the west side of the site with direct access to a Sally Port to allow quick vehicle access into and out of the building.

The RCA office is located in a 100 year old brick building in downtown Riverside, California. Navigating this office was like finding your way through a poorly lit maze. Natural daylight was limited and the space was uninspiring.

The goal for this remodel was to create an open environment with as much natural daylighting as possible. Walls were demolished to exposed original brick and wooden trusses. New walls were strategically placed created an old vs. new aesthetic. Color is used to define the different departments throughout the office.

The program is organized to maximize collaboration.

Design studios are spread out throughout the office with interiors and construction departments in the center of the office. Collaboration areas are spaced out in the office and include technology for presentations and writable surfaces for brain storming.

The exterior materials that front the street are monochromatic. This draws more attention to the color and activity going on inside the building. 1950 is painted on the back of the buidling to commemorate the year the firm was founded. A piece mural is painted on the entire east facade of the building. This is a gift back to the city to honor that there is beauty in our differences.

The nine buildings of the property encompass a unified composition whose profile echoes the adjacent mountain ridges and alludes to the signature mid-century modern roofs of both “butterfly Alexanders” and “folded-plate Wexlers.”

Specialty retail and restaurant spaces line the sidewalk to reinforce its neighborhood presence.

The natural palette of rusted steel, wood, and concrete is enlivened with splashes of color and richness of pattern.

There is variety, surprise and delight as one moves through its series of outdoor spaces, from lively communal dining terraces and poolside decks, to tranquil private patios.

The project is built to high levels of energy efficiency and sustainability. Materials are desert appropriate, in terms of durability and aesthetics.

Palm Spring, California sits at the bottom of the San Jacinto Mountains. This mountain range can be seen almost anywhere in the city.

The Rancho Vista house takes advantage of these beautiful views by framing these views.

The 10 foot tall sliding glass doors open the entire living space to the outdoors, taking advantage of the great weather during the cold months. The over hangs protect the tall windows from during the summer months.

The Dwell Monogram 2.0 house is the second of two prefabricated homes built to travel across the country as an exhibit for Monogram kitchen appliances. The finishes on the exterior and interior took on a clean modern look resembling the appliances that Monogram was showing the public. This is a small compact home that takes full advantage of the small space. Since there is a lack of a bedroom the furniture has to have multiple uses. Therefore, the couch folds out into a bed in a unique way. This home went on tour with the Dwell on Design conference in 2016 and was seen all over the country.

The Four Saints Restaurant at the Rowan Hotel by Kimpton is named after the Four Saints mountain range near Palm Springs, California. The restaurant is located on the roof level of the hotel.

The panoramic windows frame spectacular views of the San Jacinto Mountains. Included on this rooftop is a pool, outdoor bar, and VIP room. The interior finishes were carefully selected to fit into a rugged mountain concept while staying clean and modern.

The Culinary Arts Institute of San Diego is a 32,000 square foot exciting and inspiring campus of higher education. On site is a place where the students can learn, interact, create, and grow as culinary masters through experiencing food in a cooked/uncooked manner. The Bay View Bar and Grill located on the top floor of the building symbolizes students goals of becoming a top chef through public tastings, presentation, and food creativity.

As students move through their education they graduate through three levels of new teaching kitchens. Each one brings them closer to their goal of cooking, creating, and collaborating in a real life kitchen environment.

The building rises and orients it’s open outdoor atrium towards the Northwest, in order to take advantage of prevailing winds for passive cooling tactics. The form mimics movement, just as conditions of a fast pace kitchen environment would be. Change is made in all directions based on surrounding conditions and programmatic problem solving.

The structure has a double-skin system consisting of steel structural systems, translucent curtain wall facades, and a 8” perforated copper skin. Skin placement was carefully located throughout the exterior facades to shade the interior spaces from the harsh South sun, but still allowing natural light into the 216 degree panoramic view shed of surrounding condensed urban environment. There are three green gardens located on the third level terrace and the seventh floor. These create a natural setting within an urban landscape, while providing enough vegetation for culinary art occupants to use, interact and ingest nature and its growth process. Lastly, there are four skip-stops located on the third and sixth level within the building’s core circulation. These provide adequate collaboration spaces for the building’s occupants, allows increased physical activity and provides more impromptu meeting opportunities.

The form was derived from the site goals. The total square footage was folded and tilted in an upward position. Next the geometry was pushed and pulled to achieve the open courtyard and atrium as well as 360 degrees of views and natural light. This pushing and pulling based on building site and program goals created two towers. The next choice was to connect the two towers with a cap which joined them at the top. This space was to be reserved for the restuarant.
