WHAT IS THIS ISSUE ABOUT? ORGANIZATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY

This second number is composed of the activities carried out during the second term, developed between September 7th and October 6th, 2021. As a reference framework, during this term, it was known how different psychological processes can be applied or involved within the organizational context.

Organizational Approach, is a series of publications that will allow you to know the journey of five students who are studying Organizational Psychology, at the Universidad de La Sabana, in the academic period 2021-2. Through the three numbers that make up this edition, the different works that make up the academic content will be shown, this will allow you to know the way in which students progressively develop different skills and knowledge that will allow them to develop in the organizational context, in this way you too can be part of these and we invite you to stay tuned to our publications.

WHAT'S THE ACTIVITY ABOUT? Throughout history it has been determined that success of many entrepreneur is related to some personality traits, for which several studies have been done to verify this. This relationship has been widely studied in organizational psychology because of how interesting it is.

In this activity a successful businessman should be chosen, describe his history and determine his personality traits in relation to entrepreneurship. For this we chose Arturo Calle, a renowned Colombian businessman who is the CEO and creator of the men's clothing brand that bears his name and that over time has managed to be recognized both at home and abroad. This businessman is characterized by his perseverance, hard work and and by his wise decisions.

Through this activity we can learn the importance of personality within organizational psychology and organizations themselves, as well as history and culture have a great influence on the personality of the person. We were also able to didactically apply a personality theory to understand and analyze the leader's personality and likewise an intervention or solution based on the investigated data could be proposed.

Why does organizational psychology study personality traits?

Personality traits are studied by organizational psychology since it focuses on creating an environment of performance and efficiency within the workplace, designing different strategies to improve performance and communication between bosses and employees.

Some of these strategies can be based on the personality traits of the different members of the company, taking into account which traits may be more appropriate for certain situations or jobs or even which personality traits of a member should be taken into account to get better.

Which psychological personality theories/framework have you studied before?

Throughout the career we have come to see a large number of theories of personality as well as some scales. The scale that I remember the most at the time and that can have the most weight is the Big Five. As well as theories of Freud, Allport and Erickson.

How would you describe your personality having one of those frameworks as reference?

According to the big five, I would describe myself with an openness to experience normal neither very high nor very low, within the average, with a low extroversion but without being an introvert. As for scrupulousness, I consider it to be average. Cordiality, I consider that I have a high cordiality and good treatment towards people. Neuroticism, I consider myself a person with a very low neuroticism, few situations lead me to anxiety or great concern.

According to your profile, which job position do you think you would be best suited for? Why? I would consider that because of my personality I would find myself comfortable working or leading a team that is constant, where I can become familiar with everyone and there is no constant rotation of its members. Preferably within the sports field of psychology.

Why does organizational psychology study personality traits?

Organizational psychology plays an important part in personality traits and viceversa. The many types of personality that can be found in many people, do significantly contribute to the development of any organization, and this also depends on what the company is dedicated to. A company just like Red Bull, may require better extraverted and risktaking people rather than introverted, shy and quiet employees. The company demands in the best way possible to participate in giant and extraordinary events where their drink can be promoted. To this point in particular is how personality can influence for better or worse the image of a company.

Which psychological personality theories/framework have you studied before?

I personally am familiar with the Big Five theory, which includes 5 traits such as extroversion, openness, agreeableness, neuroticism and conscientiousness. I have also studied the history and theories that Eysenck, Allport, Freud and Jung have portrayed throughout the history of psychology. I personally find Carl Jung the most interesting since it has a profound and deep connection with “Being”.

How would you describe your personality having one of those frameworks as a reference?

I would describe myself as someone who enjoys being and talking hours with friends, tuning each friendship to its maximum. Apart from this, I also have fun when meeting new people and getting to know new places and cultural aspects of a country (including my own). With this, parting from the Big Five I would place my personality firstly in agreeableness and extraversion since finding new stimuli is my kind of thing on the weekends.

According to your profile, which job position do you think you would be best suited for? Why? Thinking again for myself, I would feel very comfortable in a job where I get to treat, meet and know people frequently. By this, a job in HR or as a salesman may be something where I can exploit my traits in a high ground. Aside from this, I enjoy being in customer service offices where I can interact with others affably.

Why does organizational psychology study personality traits?

This is because being a field of psychology and studying the behaviors of people within work or business contexts, the greatest number of known characteristics of the person must be taken into account, and that is where the personality traits of the person come in. Being something so ingrained to the person and their way of doing and seeing things, it is important to take it into account to determine the way in which these can influence the way in which the person carries out their tasks or activities within organizations.

According to your profile, which job position do you think you would be best suited for? Why? In my opinion I could perform well in jobs in the area of human resources because I relate very well with people, taking into account the skills of each being pleasant and having good communication skills. But not in financial matters because in those cases I am a person who does not handle stress very well

Which psychological personality theories/framework have you studied before?

The Big Five model, the proposal generated by Galen, the contributions of other authors such as Freud, Allport, Erickson, Ellis, among others, who have generated proposals on personality from their areas of knowledge.

How would you describe your personality having one of those frameworks as a reference?

From the Big Five model, I would describe myself as a person with low neuroticism, which is why I consider myself a calm, confident and flexible person; also introverted, since I am a little more formal, serious and reserved. Furthermore, I consider that I have an openness to experiences, affability and conscientiousness in a high “score”, because I am an imaginative, original, curious, friendly, understanding, organized, reliable and diligent person.

According to your profile, which job position do you think you would be best suited for? Why? Based on my profile, I consider that I can work in different positions that require interaction with people in small groups and mainly in ONGs where this can be done at the service of other people, and may require creativity and curiosity to solve problems real people may be going through.

In my case I describe myself as a person with medium neuroticism because I handle stress situations well but if it is a long time I can lose calm, low average extroversion because at first I am shy and introverted but then I can be very sociable, with high affability and very conscious of your decisions.

Why does organizational psychology study personality traits?

Organizational psychology is a science that studies the human being, his behavior, the way he relates to others in his environment and how he perceives everything that surrounds him. For this, it is important to know the personality of the people, in order to know some characteristics and how they adapt to the environments, such as the culture and work group of a company.

Which psychological personality theories/framework have you studied before?

One of the most studied theories in relation to personality aspects is the big five, which consists of a classification of personality traits that analyzes the composition of five personality dimensions in a broader sense. This model was proposed by authors such as Freud, Allport, Erickson, Ellis.

How would you describe your personality having one of those frameworks as a reference? ​According to the theory of the big five, my personality is composed of a high openness to experience, because I like to seek new experiences and I am not afraid to make big changes in my life; I have low extroversion, since I am characterized by having a reserved personality; I consider myself a person with high kindness and low neuroticism, since I consider that I deal with difficult and problematic situations in a good wayAccording to your profile, which job position do you think you would be best suited for? Why? According to the dimensions of my personality, I think I could perform well in a position that needs to travel, where creativity is needed, I could also work with a small group of people, so I think I could work in the government helping to design plans for different social groups. I consider that I am a person although a little introverted friendly and that he likes to help others.

Why does organizational psychology study personality traits?

Because personality traits affect or imply the way a person feels, thinks, and acts about a specific situation, then CEO use this data to be able to design tasks that will adapt to the skills of their employees and obtain better results, also to evaluate which person is suitable in a specific position or to predict what their behavior would be within the company.

Which psychological personality theories/framework have you studied before?

The Big Five, which raises five major aspects of the person that influence their way of being; neuroticism as the ability to handle stress situations , the openness to experience that allows involving new activities or perspectives, awareness of responsibility and good judgment in situations, extroversion in a way that makes you feel comfortable building social relationships and affability so that the person is warm and trustworthy.Also the Freud’s theory, Allport, Erickson and others.

THE 5 MOST INFLUENTIAL LEADERS IN THE WORLD September 20th, 2021 During this activity, the different leadership styles were analyzed and understood, focused on a leader known and chosen by each student and thus also identify some characteristics, tactics and policies used by him to influence people and to have achieved their objectives according to their different leadership roles, for example in this case it was the case of Mahatma Gandhi, Carlos Rodriguez, Saint John Paul II, Martin Luther King Jr & Oscar Muñoz, CEO of United Airlines.

Leadership is critical when a person wants to influence others or successfully lead a group, but this involves several things, among these different styles of leadership, tactics used by them and some policies and values from which they are guided for their execution.

This activity helped to reinforce my writing skills mainly, since writing an essay in a second league can be a bit difficult. It also helped me to identify the different styles of leadership that exist and in what way they have been used and applied to situations that have been transcendental for the history of humanity. In my case, I chose Martin Luther King Jr. as the leader and I had to carry out extensive research to be able to carry out this essay. but I believe that I could have investigated more to provide more information and achieve a more indepth analysis.

Through this activity I was able to strengthen my writing skills, information search and synthesis, since for this essay, I had to look for different sources of information and synthesize the information to establish the most relevant points. In addition to my communication skills in writing, in order to be able to express my ideas adequately and precisely. However, I think that from this work, I could improve the search for more scientific documents that would support my analysis, in addition to making more specific approaches to some required aspects, such as the achievements of the leader, because I used books, some papers, magazines and videos that, although they give accurate information, can be biased by the perspective of the person who makes or writes them.

With this activity I feel that I developed better analytical skills while inviting us to apply the theory to a character that we have seen and for that it was necessary to understand in depth the types of leadership, the tactics and policies to be able to know whether or not they applied to whom we had chosen and in turn developed skills of cohesion and coherence of ideas. In addition I think it reinforces my search skills because in order to be able to have clear the achievements of John Paul II his methods of influence and in general his life path had to know very well in which places to look and how to do it. However I feel that I could have improved the writing, connecting the ideas better because I repeated a few words because all the topics were related and treated in a similar way.

Through this activity I was able to learn about different types of leadership and reinforce those seen in class, I found a lot of information, types of leaders and ways of leading, which changed my vision of what it means to be a leader and that is why I decided to choose a leader completely different from what I would consider common. Likewise, this work helped to improve my written communication skills, articulation of ideas, coherence and cohesion of the texts.

DANIEL J. PANAYOTTI

Throughout the making of this individual activity, I mostly liked learning about real life situations where any style of leadership always helps a company thrive for a better level. I found out how different styles of leadership can have the solution for different adversities or challenges the company faces any day.

Other than this, what I also enjoyed was learning how a reputational or company-image crisis can be resolved with diplomacy within its employees, clients, stakeholders and any other group interested with the business. What my final thought was when completing this assignment, was that a higher level of professionalism within the organization itself, will give higher probability to face and overcome more serious and severe crises.

What is leadership?

Leadership is known as the process by which a person is able (according to his or her qualities, characteristics, and tactics) to motivate or influence a group of people toward a specific goal.

What is leadership?

Leadership refers to the process by which a person, based on their qualities and training, has the different skills necessary to motivate or lead people towards a specific goal.

What are the main characteristics of a good leader?

It is important to take into account good and assertive communication skills to be able to communicate the objectives, expectations and results to the group in a correct and clear way. Be empirical in view of the general and specific needs within the group, persevering and enthusiastic to continue to pursue the objectives even when the situation may be difficult, it is necessary to take into account the views of the group but to take its own decisions from a critical analysis of the situation and thus also motivate the team to move forward.

What are the main characteristics of a good leader?

From my point of view, characteristics such as good communication -even listening-, determination, attitude and adequate response to criticism and good interpersonal skills for relationships are important. In addition to the theoretical or technical skills and knowledge regarding what is being directed.

Does leadership vary according to the organizations? Why? Yes, it depends on the type of organization, its objectives and its structure.

Different skills are required that can meet specific needs, in that different types of leadership are known according to the skills and needs of each organization. For example in large companies you need skills or stricter leadership in terms of financial or similar executions, while for example in non-profit entities is a more empathetic leadership, of soft skills that allow the leader to motivate people to be part of it.

What do you think makes an outstanding leader in today’s organizations?

In my opinion, leaders today are outstanding depending on their results and performance within the organization, in this also how they manage their work team and it is important that they take into account the needs and perceptions of each employee and based on it be able to respond in the right way obtaining better results.

What do you think will make an outstanding leader in future organizations?

In the future the leaders will have to take into account the technological components with the great boom that has emerged by artificial intelligence, also consider the needs and projections of each one, also must have an adequate management of social networks, organization of time and motivation in times of isolation as they are factors that have increased or decreased with the passage of the pandemic and the beginning of teleworking.

Yes, depending on the way the organization is formed and even the type of organization that is being talked about, it is important to have a certain type of leadership, since this allows the demands to be better responded to. That is to say, many times the larger the company, the more aggressive and determined leadership is required, so the leader must have the skills and qualities to be able to respond to the requirements of the company..

What do you think makes an outstanding leader in today’s organizations?

From my point of view, in today's organizations, results are taken into account, so the more results the leader generates, the better his perception of him will be, but I also consider that the human component is now increasingly considered more important, for what will be successful those who obtain good results and have characteristics of humanity and good relationships.

Relationships and social skills, as well as skills in the management of technologies and new media, are increasingly important, since it is evident that each time the use of different technologies is part of the different business, work and personal processes.

For me, leadership is defined as the capacity a person has to direct, encourage and give out a sense of identity to other employees when facing organizational adversities.

Does leadership vary according to the organizations? Why? Perhaps some characteristics of leaders need to change in some way depending on the type of organization, the field in which the organization works and the very structure of the organization. However, some characteristics of these leaders can be applied in one or another organization. So leadership partially changes between organizations to adapt to the way of working but does not change completely.

What are the main characteristics of a good leader?

I may point out some specific characteristics that make up a good leader, and in between these a good leader encourages others to be better than him. This can be done with a strong and confident influence in others, by inspiring and transmitting company identity with a clear communication.

Good leaders provoke others into doing their best, and lifting up performances.

What do you think makes an outstanding leader in today’s organizations?

As I have said in previous answers, I believe that a great leader today must have great communication skills, great empathy, and great decisionmaking skills. However, due to the diversity of tasks and markets, not every leader will be a great leader in different environments.

Does leadership vary according to the organizations? Why? Since there are many styles and modes for implementing leadership, every company has its own identity, thus, its own leadership style. Taking for example a minery company, a transactional eadership style would be better suited rather than a transformational one. This is because miners underground don’t actively think on a vision but do think on a reward. This case would be the opposite if we situate our example on a political campaign, since the vision is not winning the elections but rather governing the country.

What do you think will make an outstanding leader in future organizations?

In future organizations, leaders must have a great capacity to recognize human talent, due to the large number of professionals and the little job offer in some countries. Leaders must be able to identify what type of person will best fit the team and the job itself. Likewise, skills such as communication, empathy, listening, among others, must be maintained.

What do you think makes an outstanding leader in today’s organizations?

In my personal opinion, an outstanding leader in today’s tendencies will always find a way to innovate and find new ways of interacting with people. These include employees, clients, investors, stakeholders, etc. For a leader to have success these days, one must not know about every process taken in the company, but to know how to manage its teams and how to efficiently squeeze out their best performance.

What do you think will make an outstanding leader in future organizations?

An outstanding leader in the future might look like someone who has philosophical grounds that are applied to the market or to ethical notions of the business. Aside from this, technology will play an important role in each person’s life, either to make a living, to do research, or even for entertainment or recreational purposes. This technology, to a medium term future, will have to be treated with great questions in mind, knowing the human, moral and ethical implications in others and the human itself.

This leader will have to know ( intrinsically) at least the basics and important and relevant aspects of philosophy.

A good leader must have excellent oral and written communication skills to achieve excellent interaction with each of the team members. He must be very empathetic and must be able to understand how to relate in the most appropriate way with each of the team members. Likewise, he must be able to make decisions and assign tasks in the best way so that an excellent performance occurs. Among other things.

Although the definition of a leader is the same regardless of the organization, there is a taxonomy for leaders, where each one is characterized by acting differently, but this depends on the type of organization, the people in charge, the motivation of the leader, and the objective of the organization and the leader.

What do you think makes an outstanding leader in today’s organizations?

Nowadays, the world is changing rapidly and every time it demands more demand and competition, that is why I consider that what would characterize an outstanding leader would be their ability to adapt, take risks and have the wisdom to make the best decisions.

What do you think will make an outstanding leader in future organizations After the arrival of the covid-19 many companies had to close, change their strategy or product / service in order to continue operating, for this reason I believe that the outstanding leaders of the future will be those who have a great capacity to adapt to changes, which be creative when solving problems and have good emotional control to face difficult situations.

Perception is understood as the way in which a person processes certain environmental stimuli and understands them in a certain way to give them a specific meaning, often based on the particular experience of previous similar stimuli.

Should everyone have the same perception of something? Why? Not all people will have the same perception towards a stimulus or event that may occur, since perceptions are often mediated by different factors, such as previous experiences, emotional state, previous attitudes or prejudices and even the sender of the stimulus if it is of a person. Therefore, not all people will understand stimulation in the same way on all occasions.

How do perceptions influence behaviour?

Having a perception about something generates a response to the event that is causing this perception, so that certain behavior will be launched according to a specific perception.

How do you think perceptions impact organizations?

According to how people perceive certain situations, environments or people, certain behaviors can be displayed. These behaviors can be highly efficient for the company if the perception is good. On the contrary, if the worker has a negative perception towards some factor, it may be a negative and inefficient behavior that can generate conflicts or slow down the work.

How does the perception of the workplace impact the work behaviour of an employee?

As I said before, the perception of the workplace can make the employee work more efficiently and feel good working in their space or, on the contrary, the worker cannot feel comfortable, has a negative perception of the workplace and negative behaviors are displayed for work

What is perception? Why is it important?

Perceptions are a set of ideas, representations or beliefs that are generated about a particular object, situation or event, which allow to reflect the way in which people recognize and experience the world, since this is reflected in the points of view, actions or attitudes of people.

Should everyone have the same perception of something? Why? No, being the representation of the way in which a person experiences or lives something in particular, it is not possible to say that everyone has the same perception about something.

Because everyone lives things in a different way, since both physical aspects of the event itself are involved in a situation, but internal aspects that can generate drastic variations in what the perception of this is considered also play an important role.

How do perceptions influence behaviour?

By generating a perception about something, this modulates the way we respond to this event, object or situation in the future, so these perceptions become important factors in the way in which specific moments are experienced.

How do you think perceptions impact organizations?

Organizations being spaces where different people converge, each of them brings with it a series of perceptions, so these differences can generate conflicts, disagreements or problems between the members of the organization, so it is important to take these differences into account to avoid the negative consequences of this.

How does the perception of the workplace impact the work behaviour of an employee?

Just as perceptions affect our behavior in any situation, within the workplace, it becomes increasingly important, because the way the work and the workplace is perceived have a significant impact on what the job will do. employees, so it should be sought that this is generally positive for employees.

Perception is the sensory experience of the world. It involves both recognizing environmental stimuli and actions in response to these stimuli. Perception is very important for human beings because through the perceptual process, we gain information about the properties and elements of the environment that are critical to our survival. It can be considered as the subjective way in which people see, feel and think about a specific thing and this is important because based on people’s perceptions they themselves act in a certain situation, they are motivated to do something, interested in something or even avoid something.

Should everyone have the same perception of something? Why? No, because it is a subjective component that implies that it has different characteristics for each person based on their specific interests, thinking, experiences and how they interact with their context. In other words, by way of example, it is not possible to say that an American sportsman will perceive a tournament the same as a Mexican businessman, because they have different cultures and tastes, because they have learned different things and every little extra thing in each person will be a gigantic difference in their way of perceiving things.

Because perceptions are based on a wide variety of aspects of people’s lives, these motivate each person to do or not, to seek or avoid or even to consider certain actions. For example, if I like sport and since I was very young I have grown up and learned about it, I will watch sporting events, exercise or even participate in them. Perception, from an organizational approach, may be defined as the (subjective) way each person looks at a problem, opportunity or goal in an organization. Perception is a greatly important human skill since it can contribute with the help of others to a greater cause that can be moving the company to its goals.

Should everyone have the same perception of something? Why? It is not 100% necessary that people have the same perception towards something. If a company portrays its goals to its employees, these can view each one of them differently, but what has to stay the same is the fact of moving forward, and be progressive and competent and determined in obtaining that goal. Perceptions can be understood as the diversity of paths one can take to arrive at a certain idea, goal or objective, and with these different sets of roads, everyone can learn from different experiences or knowledge.

How do perceptions influence behaviour?

Perceptions drive out ideas, ideas thrive inside thought, and thoughts are driven out by actions. Perceptions can easily lead anybody into committing to a certain action, and these may characterize behavior as such. Perceptions can also be changed by one person itself or by the environment that person interacts with, but not all actions are directly done towards that perception. Other actions can be done indirectly, or are not related 100% to that perception.

As I was mentioning in the previous question, perceptions tend to be driven out by actions, and these actions have a direct impact in the business, organization or company. More specifically, these behaviours are also done towards the company’s strategy, work regulations and these dimensions are the crucial networks that sustain the organization’s culture, climate and vision.

How does the perception of the workplace impact the work behaviour of an employee?

A company must gain its own employees’ trust when being hired. If an employee perceives that the work environment he is in does not meet the expectations he had in mind or does not fulfill his work style (and viceversa), this worker might not display a desirable performance for the company.

If a company also dedicates itself into treating employees right and maintaining their talent, this might create a better perception or might even liven up the organizational climate and encourage them to work better. The workplace will always impact a worker’s performance for better or worse.
