Intention In this project we intend to shed light on the history of the Capuchin monks, Via Sacra’s Old Convent of the Convent of Nossa Senhora de Arrábida and the path of Jesus' crucifixion.

Within this study, we will present our own theory and order of the steps of The Way of The Cross, a path characterized by its incomplete and poorly documented chapels, along with restricted access. The Via Sacra symbolizes the route that Jesus traversed while carrying the cross from the Pretorium to Calvary, where He met His demise.

As we venture through the Stations of the Cross and immerse ourselves in the narrative of Christ's passion, we invite you to embark on a creative reflection. While following in the footsteps of Jesus through the 7 steps of the Old Convent, we focus on the characterization of the distinctive features and pathologies of each chapel.

IN TRODU CT ION

THE CONVENT OF ARRABIDA The Convent of Arrábida was built during the 16th and 17th Century, after being founded in 1542 by Friar Martinho de Santa Maria, a Castilian Franciscan, who was granted the land by the first duke of Aveiro. It became an important site for pilgrimage and a home to monks, living in cells carved into the steep rocks of the mountain range of Arrábida. With the suppression of religious orders in 1834, the monastery was left abandoned, deteriorating into a desolate state, until it was bought by the Palmela family and restored in the 1940s and ‘50s. In 1990 the entire land, comprising 25 hectares in total, was sold to the Fundaçao Oriente.

The isolated chapels dispersed throughout the mountains were looked after by the monks when the terrain was still inhabited, currently they seem abandoned or at least publicly unreachable. (Source 1)

IN TRODU CT ION

Today one can visit the monastery with a guided tour, being shown the heart of the premises, while one can sense the luscious gardens and additional small buildings in proximity. Upon entering the first patio by trespassing a passageway initially hidden to the eye behind a small altar, one immediately recognizes the local vernacular Portuguese Architecture, with masses of white walls, which reflect the plentiful shadows of the plants, still sheltering the curious visitor from the spectacular views to come. Slowly the beauty of the floor plan unravels as one walks along the myriad small alleys leading further and further up the mountain, through the former refectory, the kitchen, the laundry and lastly to the dormitories of the monks and pilgrims. Pathologies

Guarita I is the first chapel from the Old Convent. Is it situated very up on the hill. It has preserved very well during time. The reader, however, can see some damages: all around the external walls, blocks have fallen, creating little openings in the guarita, as seen in image 1.

The dome has kept its form, in some places minor erosions can be detected.

The inside of the guarita doesn’t contain anything.

We used Revit for modeling the guarita with the help of the point clouds. We made the “openings” resulting from the falling of some blocks. Also, we have made the detailed interior, where arches can be seen.

2. Blender

We used Blender for “deforming” the perfect geometry from Revit. Our purpose was to give it a more “realistic” look of the pathologies. Moreover, we have applied the textures of the guarita in the same app.

3. Twinmotion

Twinmotion was used for creating a realistic environment of the guarita’s placement.

GUARITA II Section

Pathologies

Guarita II is the 2nd chapel from the Old Convent. The special feature of this guarita is its hexagonal shape.

The exterior walls have kept their form, however they have some marks of erosion.

The roof has a deep crack on top, and it is significantly damaged, especially at the corners.

The inside of the guarita doesn’t contain anything.

Pathologies

Guarita lll is the 3rd chapel from the Old Convent.

The exterior of the guarita has signs of erosion, the roof being the one who got affected the most.

The interior walls are well maintained, showing minimal signs of damage. They are painted in a light, yellowish color.

The interior is decorated with an altar with colorful tile details and a statue of Jesus on a cross.

Pathologies Guarita IV is the 4th chapel from the Old Convent. The special feature of this guarita it is its detailed roof: it has 4 interesting small pylons around the dome. Even if it is a wonderful construction, the dome and the pylons are very damaged. The rendering has completely eroded, making it difficult to envision the pylons’ detailing.

The exterior walls have kept their form, however 1 of them has lost its rendering and paint in time.

Looking at the other exterior walls, we can deduct that the guarita was painted in a peachyorange color back when it was constructed.

The inside of the guarita doesn’t contain anything.

Pathologies Guarita V is the 5th chapel from the Old Convent. This guarita looks great and it has kept its form, there are no damages. The dome is intact, it has some discoloration on the top, but it doesn’t influence on the look of it.

The walls have kept the paint, a pale-yellow color, the damage they have are a result of vandalism.

They have no sign of erosion or other natural damages.

This is the most accessible guarita, as it is located on the edge of a main road.

The inside of the guarita doesn’t contain anything.

Guarita VI is the 6th chapel from the Old Convent. This guarita is not possible to reach, we have based our work on satellite pictures. We tried our best to model the guarita as true to reality as possible.

The inside of the guarita doesn’t contain anything.

Guarita VII is the last chapel from the Old Convent. This guarita is not possible to reach, we have based our work on satellite pictures. We tried our best to model the guarita as true to reality as possible.
