Dualism; ¨an instance of contrast¨and ¨interchanged relations¨.

This hospice is strategically located at the shore of Clear Lake, California. The water serves as a mirror that reflects the site’s changing environment, introducing the presence of time and how unstoppable it is. Dualism aims to provide housing for 6 terminally ill users for an unknown period of time. The building respects it’s patients’ personal way of dealing with the end of life by letting them navigate through the 5 stages of death in whichever path feels right to them. By providing moments of sharing as well as individual time, the ideal goal for these patients is to reach acceptance in order for them to reflect on how death is unavoidably part of life.

Simul Columpna is a recreational center located on Tybee Island, a barrier island that forms part of Georgia’s coastline. The project’s design acts as an interpretation of its unique local landscape. Columpna aims to capture the essence of what being on the beach feels like. The public main plaza is an open place which invites both Tybee Island locals and tourists. Its design focuses on capturing the formalization of sand and shade where the different levels correspond to the changing heights of floods from storms and rain. Columpna respects nature, it accepts its power and intends to be transformed by surges that pass by.

Simul Columpna allows users to take a break from the ocean while maintaining visual connection with the beach.

SUSTAINABILITY & RESILIENCY RESILIENCY “Resilience is the capacity to adapt to changing conditions and to maintain or regain functionality and vitality in the face of stress or disturbance. It is the capacity to bounce back after a disturbance or interruption.”

-Resilient Design Institute Adaptability is one of the vital strategies under which Columpna was designed. The project aims to transform from being like the ocean, a place of play and nurturing, to being powerful enough to survive the next impending hurricane. The “columpnas” or columns are essential elements, fully incorporated in the building’s design which later unfold into shutters that form strong and protective walls.

ENVIRONMENTALLY RESPONSIBLE Simul Columpna cares about being a post-disaster shelter for the community. The project incorporates diverse design strategies which help the building be self-sustained. Photovoltaic panels are attached to elongated surfaces in order to maximize solar exposure. Columpna also displays a water tower which collects rain water from the court’s tilted roof to be filtered and later utilized by the community.

STRENGTH As its own name suggests, a “columpna” or pillar is defined as a “Support for a building or as an ornament for a monument”.

The project’s organization is based on interlocking planes. All moments of intersection are instances that build up strength.

Columpna is strong and protective, the building embraces all users in the community in order for them to feel safe on site.

EXTERIOR PERSPECTIVE

Columpna explores how concrete can perform as a strong, resilient material, in a very elegant way. Concrete is used as a primary material for the building’s structure, as well as, a light material for the building’s finishes creating a delicate skin.

¨I am not citizen of any country¨ Everyday in Myanmar hundreds of people leave the country through the border of bangladesh, some of them walking great distances, some of them navegating, but all of them going through the same journey, encountering the same fear of not being accepted by the country, they once called home. Ethnic conflicts are getting worst every year, and so are the refugee living conditions. Refugee camps cannot replace the homes that have been lost, the sense of belonging and freedom is no longer present.

In response, IHU created a place right in the border between Myanmar and Bangladesh, designed to embrace human distinctions by unifiyng them in a cohesive environment. A community where we are all seen as equals, as individuals, and as humans.

A building that is anywhere everywhere.

A building for anyone and everyone.

SELF-SUSTAINABLE ECONOMIC INDEPENDENCE

Refugees now live marooned among rice paddies that do not belong to them. Fisherman catch is barely enough; they do not own their equipment. With no clean water supply, chil contracted skin rashes from washing in agricultural run-off.

To solve this, IHU is equipped with a water tower that collects rain water and a desalinatio used for hydroponic gardens and residential units. The residential modules are designed and vernacular construction methods, in order to be built by their residents, encouraging self-sustainable society.

Digital materiality consists in the creation of a simple component. Such component is made up of two parts; the scaffold and the infill. The simple component is arranged into a high-density assembly which is theN simulated.

The scaffold lacks rigidity and is affected by gravity when simulated. The infill inflates with no control. The design of the high-density assembly aims to create a balance between the infill and the scaffold. When simulated, the infill inflates and holds the scaffold in place preventing it to fall, while the scaffold controls the infill´s inflation in order for it not to loose its original shape and composition.

Spectra responds to a remote working scenario and allows for spatial collaboration between people working in a physical environment and those working remotely, as can be seen today because of the pandemic. This is done through exploring the potential of extended reality (ie a combination of virtual, augmented and mixed reality) and through exploiting recent developments in technology. In the future spaces should be designed both as physical and virtual, each enhancing the other and allowing for seamless integration. Such spaces can be referred to as ”Cyber-Urban Spaces”.

The aim is to use architecture as an instrument in order to enable seamless collaboration between people working physically in a space and people working remotely while allowing for chance encounters by providing windows from one world to another.

The architecture serves as a vessel to contain communication. It is communication that describes our experience in a space. Communication and interaction with each other and with the architecture itself.

DESIGN SCHEME - SHELL FORMATION Two urban profiles are identified on our site; the rigid orthogonal grid of New York and the fluidity of water.

STEP 01

This is the initial massing strategy of how Spectra aims to blend in seamlessly with both very different ends of the site. The design was formed by a low poly plane to connect the city fabric to the water and also took the shape based on the simulations exploration of fluid and curve growth as it was explained previously to address the concept of linear to curvilinear from physical to virtual.

The landscape was also designed as a reflection of the initial shell’s form to emphasize the fluid formation of the shell. Another layer of landscape was considered in order to increase the potential of the existing opportunities of the given site and increase

SPACE ORGANIZATION Spectra is divided into 3 different longitudinal sectors.

The first one is the work area which consists of hot desking spaces, meeting rooms, workshop spaces and a terrace. The level of privacy in this area increases upwards. Semi private areas are located on floors 1 & 2, while very private areas are located on the top floors.

The second sector is the social area which is strategically located in the center of Spectra. Its location encourages users from all programs to come together in one common area. A big atrium emphasizes its importance.

The third sector is the lecture hall area which consists of a main, conference space and other medium sized and small lecture moments. This area is located along the waterside in order to draw users into lectures and events happening in Spectra.

ALL REALITIES IN SPECTRA The project generates a spectrum of realities with varying degrees of virtuality ranging from purely physical to mixed to purely virtual.

CONSTRUCTING THE VIRTUAL WORLD The digital office consists of a mixed reality area which is a digital twin of the floorplates present physically. As we move along the gradient and virtuality increases, the digital twin co-exists with purely virtual extensions and finally in blue we have the purely virtual areas which have very limited physical presence.

THE VIRTUAL WORLD

The means of creating the virtual world also depend on its physical presence. The parts that have a physical presence can be developed through photogrammetry and its events can be live-streamed using 360 cameras. However, the purely virtual areas would have to be 3d modelled.
