The analysis stage was focused on three main categories: wind, heat and water. The strategies chosen for climate change adaptability in this public space are based on that as well as intersectional.

This central space is currently the most affected by sun exposure. Due to its width, it is used by children to play football, but it can become unusable in the summer season. As previously mentioned, the main strategy here was to generate shade with elements and vegetation, as well as incorporating the green wall.

Resilient spaces
As has been mentioned, the space in the square is lacking in terms of shade. Previously there was a pétanque court in this area which is why currently there are no trees or urban furniture in this zone. The objective is to add vegetation and an artificial water point to reactivate this area making it a place to stay instead of passage.

In windy episodes the square does not act as a shelter for its users since the majority of the surface of the square is made of sand that rises up being uncomfortable. The proposal intends to add an area at the south of the plaza with semi-permeable soil, as well as vegetation barriers that can mitigate the effects of harsh winds.

The singular building’s shape is bounded by natural conditions such as topography, climate and biodiversity. The building opens to the its inside and outside. The idea is to have a permeable space that connects the rainforest with architecture. The shape allows for natural ventilation and illumination of both facades.
The form originates with the protection, respect and value of the environment. The existing trees in the plot set marking grounds that give sense of the building’s footprint giving additional value to the proposal.

Environment
The decision to preserve 60% of the existing jungle in the site led to a sinous building design. The building’s form creates the opportunity ot have an introverted space with natural elements as well as a connection to its exterior and the tropical jungle.

Design Concept
The main objective of the proposal is to create high-quality homes in an environment priviledged as is the one in Mayakoba. The enhancement of virtues and uniqueness of nature is one of the main characteristics. The building is made up of different experiences scattered along a journey. Nature holds an importante position as a vertebrating element that gives form to the building. The large scale patio becomes the heart of the complex constituted by a large open central space with the preexisting tree species.

The plot area is located at the south side of the existing Terminal 5 in the King Khalid International Airport. The layout of the plot is irregular in shape with an approximate area of 600,000m2 and approximate measures of 1070m x 660m. The topography is even overall and meets the requirements of the project brief. Pedestrian and vehicular accesses are from the southwest side. The new Terminal 5 South will be connected to the existing Terminal 5 (North), covering a total area of 600,000 m2. Pedestrian and vehicular egress and ingress will be located at the southwest side.

Functional & efficient design
The geometry of the proposal is simple, aiming to facilitate the construction process whilst achieving a clear and efficient functional diagram for the travelers. The building is conceived with a modular construction, based on a 36x36m module, easing transportation and installation, as well as reducing costs. Using dry construction methods means limiting the use of water on site, as well as simplifying buildability and enabling an effective dismantlement and future reuse of the asset on a different location.

Al-Majlis is conceived as an intricate piece of jewelry that welcomes all passengers as they arrive to King Khalid International Airport. Its simple shape responds to the need of having a temporary terminal that is not only easy to build, but also to unbuild and reassemble on a different location. Although a simple geometry is the base of the design, its elegant and delicate detailing feels modern and cutting-edge.

Context
Los Laredos is a single city that over time was divided by the border between the United States and Mexico. 80% of trade between cities is customs agencies and transportation. These present a centrality caused by their strong connection of international bridges, two vehicular and one railway, of users who cross daily. The arrival of the railway to the cities represented a rapid growth creating lags and segregation in the mobility of each one.
