Smart glass house / Venice CA summary A community centre located in North Hollywood, CA The centre houses a number of differentamenities such as a library, cafe and workshops.

2017 / Academic Project Architectural Design Case study Studio Instructor: Eric Olsen The design of the house is based on the concept of a rib-

bon of smart glass that wraps inside the house forming

both open spaces and closed spaces. Open and closed in the sense of visual perception. This is acheived by using smart glass which is able to change from opaque to trans-

parent through a switch. The ability to make certain spaces

open up and close create the perception of a maleable space.

The project is located in Venice, CA a developing tech

neighborhood, which has seen change in the demographic of residents in the area. Today this area is known

as a part of silicon beach, which is the future tech hub in southern California.

Frank House - Killingsworth Brady & Smith The concept of core was my area of interest with this case study house. I looked at how the

idea of core is present within both the urban and building scale.

The core of the neighborhood or core of the house how do these control the space and elements around them?

At the urban scale you can see that Franks house sits on an island which only has access

through multiple bridges connecting you back to the mainland. And so in this instance

the circulation is the main core in which build-

ings and a community is built around. Again at building scale you can see that in order to

enter the home you cross a small platform bridge, providing both a gesture to the context but also taking you into the core space of the house, that building the atrium space.

01 concept the design is the concept of the scroll of smart glass wrapping through the building creating multiple enclosed spaces.

02 smart glass - off when the glass is opaque the spaces are individual and create privacy between them.

03 smart glass - on when the glass is switched open spaces become combined and start to engage with each other, for example the kitchen and dining area.
