REMODELING
REMODELING A FORMER MARKET INTO A HOUSING This project is about the remodeling of one of the oldest and most iconic markets of Madrid, the Legazpi’s Fruits and Vegetables Market. It is an enormous building with a very nice location near the Manzanares. Due to the incredible amount of space we could work with, the project is about an age-friendy housing, with public premises at the ground floor, houses, sports and social spaces.
CITY INCLUSION Starting from the existent building five design decisions were made. Considered the context and the transportation front, the building opens to the main public face, welcoming and connecting to an existing green area at the same time that opens to the city. Due to the program project the building was divided into public and private, considering the magnitud of the former market shortcuts were designed for the district neighbors. The final result is a remodeling strategy that welcome the city and vegetation providing shortcuts to the citizens and an internal open space for the householders.

The process of design is cyclical and interactive, which can be defined as a six part process. The architecture design process can be approached in a number of ways by different designers, but generally it will follow a very similar pattern. This Studio encouraged the continuous processing of raw materials expressed on a variety of media. The right use of the right tool / software in the right process was the keytool on this project

Piazzale Loreto, a square that benefits cars and not the pedestrian, this was the problem identified; and to give back to Milan and its inhabitants a quality public space, the purpose. The strategy was the expansion of the perimeter sidewalks, and by ecognizing the traces of the city, pick the most suitable area to rise the new volumen that has ‘‘ Oasis ’’ as main idea. Detaching the new volume from the existing buildings and at the same time respecting the existing minimum height was important to avoid a dense image, The curve of the building responds to the contrast that an oasis must have in its context and the internal patio to respect the privacy and tranquility that a hotel should have. At the same time below the site there is the metro line 1, the metro entrances were recognized and using the same curvy language they were highlighted in order to frame the new Piazzale Loreto.

As a framework from which we design is an essential component of contemporary landscape architecture. Our definition of it is not confined to “natural” or “environmental” contexts; rather it refers to the complexity of agents acting in any environment and their unique interactions. The option was to examine ecological flows and processes across the strata of a rock quarry and to propose a landscape architectural intervention for the site. The first design exercise of the studio was to understand the complexities of the extractive site and to develop landscape strategies that will structure a new dynamic system in, on and over the ground. The mapping itself became the first critical exercise in the design process. As James Corner puts it in the seminal essay The Agency of Mapping: As a creative practice, mapping precipitates its most productive effects through a finding that is also a founding; its agency lies in neither reproduction nor imposition but rather in uncovering realities previously unseen or unimagined, even across seemingly exhausted grounds. More than a simple cut-and-paste of data already available, each layer is drawn to represent a particular intention.

By understanding the problem, and its origin, the strategy was based on the rehabilitation of a marble quarry. Sicily has a dry climate with extremely hot summers due to Sirocco winds, causing continuous a deforestation. Nature gets its way to survive, by observing these parameters as slopes and shadows, they were identified at the project site in order to reforest the quarry. The Rehabilitation tent seeks to shade the exposed sites with high radiation and thus allow nature to heal with the help of ephemeral architecture.

An international open ideas competition for young architects and students was initiated to remember and honour the victims of the MH17 tragedy, which has happened over the skies of Ukraine. This man-made tragedy has influenced thousands of lives in direct or indirect manner across the entire world.

The project consists in a continous promenade that invites visitors to experience alternatively the feeling of departure, void and the deafening persistence of memory. The project itself is a reflection about memory and loss and it gets rid of the conventional built architecture. Indeed, through wrapping the park with mirrors inclined towards the internal sea, its external appearance is determined only by leaves and waves.Aware of this ambiguity, it was decided to hide the volumen through architecture itself, by giving form to the void, drawing the spectator into a visual, spatial and mental experience. The tectonic of the building disappears from the outside, as a metaphor of a cognitive approach to a world that usually passes through sensory perception, in order to be later appreciated within the materials and details of the interior space. The use of water and canals in the interior part of the circles is meant to communicate a sense of purification to visitors and to connect the path with the system of the city.
