I started by choosing a local issue, and after some thinking I decided to focus on Waste in Malta, mainly because Waste has always been a very hot topic and quite a big issue in our country. The next step was to have a brainstorming session about the subject related to the causes and effects of waste, which are currently happening locally. This resulted in a mind-map full of different ideas and key-words associated with Waste which turned out to be quite useful afterwards. After jotting down some ideas, it was time to think about which medium was the most appropriate for the issue. I wanted to make use of posters, flyers, banners and brochures. I decided to create a waste campaign and to showcase the works on Instagram as it is aimed mostly at the younger generation (teens, young adults). Since they use social media daily, this issue would hopefully catch their attention. Another reason why I wanted to present the artworks on Instagram was so as to reduce waste by not printing the artworks.

ext, I looked deeper into the issue and started the research process. I searched for different types of waste, various facts regarding waste in Malta, information about the Maltese landfill at Maghtab, the system of disposing of organic waste in Malta, waste sorting and recyclable waste, including paper, cardboard, glass, plastic and metal. I also looked at different waste campaigns in general as well as waste campaigns specific to Malta. My next step was to research waste statistics in Malta which enabled me to gain more knowledge about the subject. While I was searching for organizations and campaigns in Malta regarding waste, I came across a Maltese organization called “Wasteserv. Its website provided me with reading material about the issue. I looked at different effects waste can have on human, animal and plant life. The effect of waste on animals in general and more specifically tortoises is horrific. All the plastic we consume, some of which ends up in the sea, is at times harmful, at others, lethal for these animals.

My next step after all the research was to look for inspiration to help me create the designs of the artworks. I looked at several protests from around the world and also protests in Malta. These protests helped realise the importance of banners and the impact of the typography used. Some posters pertaining to previous waste campaigns were of inspiration to me, as I could get a good idea of what to focus on in order to get the message accross. Lastly, I looked at minimal and abstract posters, since I wished to create something similar on those lines.

Glass bottles. The next step was to start the process. The InDesign software enabled me to align everything, Illustrator helped me to create some clipping masks and designs and Photoshop to create typographical images, as well as the final mock-ups. Before I started to create the designs digitally, I sketched out some ideas on my sketchbook

and wrote down some quotes/ statements regarding waste. Once I finished sketching, I began working digitally. I started off by writing down text and playing with the kerning, leading, tracking, font size, different weights, font-style and positioning. After placing the text, I used geometric shapes for the designs. Most of my designs have a rectangle frame/border around the design or strokes and lines around the text. As for the brochure, I came up with the idea of including reverse thinking on the cover, so that it would encourage more people to read it. Inside the brochure, I included significant statistics about waste management in Malta and wrote down a question in the sub-title to make people reflect and think before throwing something away. Next, I started to create the design of the flyers. The flyers include some facts regarding waste and information graphics.

TYPOG R A P H Y When it came to font style, I picked Futura for all the designs because, not only is it one of my favourite font styles, but it also went well with the style and theme. This font also gives a geometric approach and it is clean and legible, something which I was looking for in a font. I used different font weights, but focused mainly on “bold as to create more hierarchy and to create emphasis on certain words.

COLOUR SCHEME

T

he colour-scheme that I used was mainly based on shades of green and blue. White was often used for some of the text as well. I decided to focus on different shades of green because the colour green often symbolizes nature and the environment. The colours that I used are cold and vibrant .

The style that I used for all of the designs is quite modern and minimal. I tried to keep my designs as simple as possible so that the message would be clear, legible and straight forward. The aim of the final outcome was to bring more attention to the issue of Waste Management, to raise awareness when it comes to waste disposal and to encourage more people to recycle and sort waste. I am quite happy with the final outcome, as I think I did a pretty good job with expressing the

message through the use of typography. As an improvement, I could have used only 3 colours throughout so that the works would have been more consistent.
