PORTFOLIO Đặng Anh Tuấn
Hi,
My name is Tuan. I’m Vietnamese and currently living in Ho Chi Minh City. I’m at the beginning point on the journey of exploring architecture and becoming a true architect. I’m always willing to learn and strive for better designs to help the team progress.
This portfolio is a selection of elements from various projects I was dedicated to. They show my observations, the references and the perception of my expedition, above all, they feed my work on architecture.

DI LINH HOUSE / LAM DONG PROVINCE
Individual House For A Monk / Built 2022
Di Linh House is my first professional project as an architect. The house is built for a monk, who left the pagoda from Da Lat City and moved to Di Linh town, on top of the mountain for gardening and meditation practice. The project’s main idea is to build a simple house harmonized with the surrounding context by using local materials such as wood, bricks, stones and basalt red soil of the highlands. The design aims to make the house blend with nature when choosing the red soil for the walls, the color of the soil helps the house is a part of the land. The sample of the red soil wall is experimented by an expert from a laboratory in Ho Chi Minh City.
The laborers for the building are K’Ho people, a popular ethnic group in the southern central highlands. They don’t have much experience in construction but the owner was willing to hire them and gave them an opportunity to learn a new skill for living. The skillful woodworkers are from Nha Trang City, the city that is within a 5 hours drive from Di Linh. It was a pleasure working with the woodworkers and learning from them on every detail of the house.
Di Linh House is an interesting project with many aspects to learn from including the special position, the materials, the client and the people involved in the project.

EARTH SCHOOL / KAFOUNTINE, SENEGAL (2022)
Competition Project - Third Round
Kafountine region has a tropical wet and dry or savanna climate. Even though Kafountine’s population is around 17,000 inhabitants, there is only one secondary school in the town and the current school lacks essential facilities for 1000 students, although the infrastructure doesn’t meet the appropriate conditions to accommodate more than 600. The new school is proposed to improve the quality of education in the area for over 400 students. Based on the trees location datas provided by the NGO Kakolum, the design team determined the radius of trees to shape the area for construction. The frame system is arranged in a ring shape to help collect the rainwater during the rainy season (from June to October) and create a boundary for the inside and the outside of the school in the immense surrounding context. The building is built with rammed earth bricks and local wooden frames, which is appropriate for the main goal of sustainability and environmental awareness of the NGO Kakolum.

THE TREE
We are interested in the existing trees and want to preserve them as much as possible. The design aims to determine the radius of trees to shape the area for construction, to avoid destroying the trees’ roots systems. Defining the boundaries of the green area also helps to shape the form and basic framework of the construction.
MULTIPLE FUNCTION
A covered courtyard will be a multi-purpose space, it also helps connect classrooms from different positions on the site and other functional rooms of the school. The open courtyard with existing greenery and water collection is also a part of the connection as well as a place for students’ outdoor activities.
THE LOOP
The classrooms and other functional rooms are arranged around the open courtyard to create a feeling of friendliness and close connection. In an immense surrounding context without an end, the design team wanted to envision an end, a complete space.
MODULE
The basic frame system connecting the areas will be built first and the classroom areas connected to that framework will be constructed in the next stages. We wanted to create a basic framework, an open and scalable fabric over time.

CRAFTSMANSHIP POTTERY STUDIO / HO CHI MINH CITY
Rearrangement Project
Craftsmanship Studio is a small pottery studio, located in District 5, HCM City. The studio was placed in a room of a typical tube house in urban Vietnam, with some basic living facilities. This mini space is operating pottery classes from handcraft to using electric wheels for people who love handicrafts and want to try some new experiences. The most essential need of the studio is adding a new shelf for customers’ products because of the overloading of the old shelves.
By considering the existing state of the room, asking about the needs of the owners, the activities of the class and the budget for renovation, which leads me to consider carefully what is the most important thing I should do in the project. When the room is full of furniture and it also has many customers during the day, there is nothing much to do but consider a rearrangement of some different layouts. My job was to open a new vision for the owners about the opportunities the room would be.
One thing I can learn from this project is a design is not always having a lot of things inside, but a small change or in this case the rearrangement of the layout is more essential.

The 1st option plan (selected option) was designed to prioritize to ensure enough space for the activities of the class while adding a new shelf for products.
The 2nd option plan was designed to increase the space for shelves, which leads to comfort space for the other activities of the class being reduced as a result.

Renovation and Expansion of General Science Library of Ho Chi Minh City
26 The location of the library on District One, Ho Chi Minh City
RENOVATION AND EXPANSION OF GENERAL SCIENCE LIBRARY / HCMC Graduation Project
The
Science Library of Ho
Minh City is not only one of the largest buildings in Ho Chi Minh city but also the most outstanding example of Vietnamese modernist architecture. For the need to serve more readers in the context of increasing students in the city in the future, the design’s main goals are to expand the new library inside the site and renovate the old one without damaging the modernist architecture icon of the city. With the limited building density and floor area ratio of an intervention project, the design aims to renovate the existing programs of the old library, while building a new library on the back of the site.
The approach is based on the concept of ‘the unity’ with the old and the new work as the only library on the site, not two individual objects. The old library represents the tradition and the new library represents the modern in the 21st century. Two libraries stand together as a cultural icon of the 300 years of Saigon. Even though the current library is an iconic modernist building of the city, it is not recognized officially as an architectural heritage by the city’s authority. Therefore, the design is considered carefully how to connect the two buildings without damaging the architectural and historical values of the current library while making them work well as the only library.
The facade of the new library is a lesson from the historical library when it works as a brise-soleil in effectively blocking the direct sun into the interior while creating a modern simple appearance for the new building. The design also considers bringing the greenery to the courtyard to help connect the two buildings as well as a similar design with the current green garden from the front of the old library to keep consistency on the landscape master plan.

This project is a part of the first-year projects of the architecture school UAH. The design aimed to renovate a small house or small space which helps students initially understand the concept of ideas in architecture. By considering and measuring the house and the site, the design team realized some disadvantages of the old small house in the large site with surrounding vegetables. The small house was in a bad condition and a quadrant of the house was dark and musty than the rest of the house.
The main idea was to cut half of a house that was attached to the big house including the quadrant and create half as a veranda on the other side. The living space was arranged in half the rest of the house. The design’s goal is to bring a fresh appearance to the house with more natural light and improve the quality of living.
